Hello,

I belong to this Yahoo group, and I'm sending this message because the
group is receiving spam messages. I own a couple of Yahoo groups myself,
and I'd like to tell you how I keep spammers out of my groups. I've
found this technique to be 100% effective.

The approach that has worked for me is this:
1. Let anyone join, no questions asked.
2. Set the group so that all new members are moderated.
3. When a new member posts for the first time, you will have to approve
the message. Then you do one of two things:
a. If the message is appropriate for the group, approve it and remove
the moderation from that member.
b. If the message is spam, delete it and ban the member, without any
notification. These people typically sign up for numerous groups, and
if you don't tell them they are banned they probably won't come back
and try to re-join using a different address for a long time.

In case you might have trouble finding the settings you need to change,
here's a quick tutorial. (I've found that finding some of the settings
in the the Yahoo groups management area isn't always easy.):

1. From the group homepage, click on "Management" at the bottom of the
menu.
2. On the management page in the "Group Settings" area, click on
"Membership".
3. Next to "Membership Type and Welcome Message", click on "edit".
4. If "membership type" isn't already set to "open", click on "open",
then click on "save changes".
5. Click on "Group settings->back to management".
6. Click on "Group settings->messages".
7. In the "Posting and Archives" section, click on "edit".
8. In "Posting options->Moderation", click on "New members".
9. Click on "save changes".

When a new member posts for the first time you will have to approve it
or reject it. Although you can do this by email, from instructions in
the "MODERATE" message you will receive, you will have to go to the
group webpage to unmoderate or ban the member, so you might as well go
there right away to approve or reject the message.

1. From the group homepage, click on "Messages->Pending".
2. Click on the subject line of the pending message.

3a. If the message is spam, after making note of the sender, click on
"Delete", NOT "Reject". (This is so the sender doesn't get a notice
that his message was rejected.)
4a. Click on "Members"
5a. Find the listing for the member. Do NOT check the box under "Remove
Member. Click on "edit membership" if you are in "expanded" view. If
you are in "simple" view, click on the "pencil" icon.
6a. At the bottom of the member's listing, click on "ban member".

3b. If the message is appropriate for the group, after making note of
the sender, click on "Approve".
4b. Click on "Members"
5b. Find the listing for the member. Click on "edit membership" if you
are in "expanded" view. If you are in "simple" view, click on the
"pencil" icon.
6b. At the bottom of the member's listing where it says:
"Posting Messages: Override: This member's posts are always
moderated" click on "edit".
7b. Under "Message posting privileges" click on "Use current group
message posting setting", then click on "Save Changes".

Some people have tried setting up their groups so that prospective new
members have to be approved. This can also work, but the problem with
this method is that it can be difficult to determine someone's
intentions by just asking them why they want to join, or even by asking
them to answer a few questions to demonstrate some knowledge of the
group's focus.

Regards,

John
