My copy arrived in the mail this week. It's very smooth with a subtle
edge. I can see why Mr Pugh says it's not quite blues and not quite
jazz. It has that in between vibe that's outside, yet strangely
familiar. Some tracks more than others. Sketch #16 (track 7) crept
up on me. I was 30 seconds into it before I realized it was "Living
Proof". It's that kind of sound. It's so familiar to your ear if
you've listen to the last 4 or more RCB CD's, yet at the same time,
something entirely new. The title "Backgrounds For A Soulful Life" is
a very appropriate title. It's been my background music while working
this week.
If you've seen Jim play with the band before you already know how much
sound he can get out of the Hammond B3. Some times I have to loop a
section of the songs to hear it again. You swear someone's playing a
base at times. But it's just Jim and and its just good.
I'd encourage any RCB fan who's heard Jim play live to head over to
the site and listen to the samples there. If you like what you hear,
pick yourself up a copy.
The Silhouette logo of Jim at the B3 on the back of the CD cover is
awesome, by the way. It'd make a great print to hang or wallpaper for
a computer desktop.
I'm off to make myself another 3-olive vodka martini and give it
another listen.
