V-DAY COMES TO Long Island's Lesbian Community
In association with the V-Day 2002 Worldwide Campaign, the women of Long
Island's Lesbian Community are proud to present a benefit performance of
"THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES"
February 17, 2002, Long Island: V-Day (www.vday.org) is a worldwide movement
& a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise
money, and revitalize the spirit of existing organizations. Since its
inception, V-Day has used the arts as a vehicle for activism. V-Day has
provided motivation and opportunity for a sweeping, consolidated, worldwide
movement that is giving the issue of violence against women high visibility
and media attention. V-Day has helped shift the way people perceive their
roles in making the world a safe place for women and girls. V-Day for Long
Island's Lesbian Community is a local effort within the worldwide context of
V-Day’s 2002 Worldwide Campaign.
According to LILCI's spokesperson "It is our sincere hope that V-Day for
Long Island's Lesbian Community will raise the level of awareness of the
issue in our community, raise money in support of local programs dedicated
to stopping violence against women and raise the spirits of all who choose
to be part of this initiative." V-Day for Long Island's Lesbian Community is
planning to hold a benefit performance of "The Vagina Monologues" around
Valentine’s Day 2002. "We are thrilled to be one of over 200 cities around
the world participating in the V-Day Worldwide Campaign and are proud to be
a part of the V-Day global movement."
Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News
as "intelligent" and "courageous," the Obie award-winning play, "The Vagina
Monologues," which was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler, dives
into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried
in women’s experiences. Based on interviews with a diverse group of hundreds
of women - from a Long Island antiques dealer to a Bosnian refugee - "The
Vagina Monologues" brazenly explores questions often pondered, but seldom
asked: Do women like their vaginas? What do women call their vaginas? What
can you tell about a woman by the way she moans when she is aroused? Ms.
Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world - from
Zagreb, Croatia to Santa Barbara, from London to Seattle, from Jerusalem to
Oklahoma City.
As Eve performed the piece in these small towns and large cities all around
the world, she saw and heard firsthand the destructive personal, social,
political and economic consequences against women has for many nations. And
so in 1998, V-Day, the global movement was born.
V-Day proclaims Valentine’s Day as V-Day. When all women live no longer
fearing, then V-Day will be known as Victory Day.
On the heels of the highly successful and internationally-acclaimed V-Day
2001 at Madison Square Garden in New York City (which featured a performance
of "The Vagina Monologues" by 70 of the most notable women of stage and
screen) and the V-Day 2001 Worldwide Initiative, the ground-breaking play
will once again be performed at Forevergreen, 241 N Broome St, Lindenhurst,
NY as part of the V-Day 2002 Worldwide Campaign, on Wednesday, March 6, 2002
at 8p (doors at 6p). The performance is sponsored by LILCI, Forevergreen,
Shi Bar & Long Island Lesbian Online.
"The statistics speak for themselves," says LILCI spokesperson, "In the
United States, violence against women often does not consist of a single
incident; it is instead a continual state of victimization. ("Domestic and
Sexual Violence Data Collection," National Institute of Justice and Bureau
of Justice Statistics joint report, July 1996)" Not only do we need to
raise awareness of these statistics but more important, we need to stop it
now!"
