R.I.P. Warren Zevon   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #97 of 215 |
Dear Friends,

I have been dreading this day for over a year now. I've imagined what I
might say on the passing of Warren Zevon, and I honestly still don't know. I am
just trying to let the reality set in, and to let the thoughts flow, bit by
bit. This is a very sad day for me, to say the very least.

Warren passed away of cancer yesterday in Los Angeles. He has been a huge
influence on me- not that my songs necessarily sound like his at all, but he
inspired me at a young age to love music, to enjoy the unexpected, and to keep
on
writing. His humor also taught me how to lighten up and to not always take
the business of songwriting so seriously, a lesson I still struggle with
considerably! It is good to be reminded of the funny, bawdy songs I used to
write
years ago. Maybe you will hear that again one day.

Anyway, I had the amazing opportunity to meet Warren in 1994 and he became a
friend of mine. I am forever blessed by the rare and seemingly magical
opportunity it was to actually grow up, meet, and befriend a childhood idol.
Even
more wonderful, and sometimes difficult, was to slowly let go of the pedestal
on which we put our heroes, and to see him as a whole, real person with all the
foibles that humans have. He was brilliant, intense, sometimes wacky,
sometimes sweet, truly cynical, and definitely unique. What a trip to know him.
I
am glad that he enjoyed my music, too, and I will always remember him calling
me with lots of thoughts on the "In Progress" CD. To relate to an artist by
whom I have been so moved over the years on an artistic level like that was
really amazing.

I most importantly would like to say that if you have never fully experienced
the music of Warren Zevon, please do. His self-titled album from 1976 is a
bona fide classic. "Excitable Boy" from '78 has the song most people know, of
course, "Werewolves of London." That is a fun tune, but there is so much more
great stuff on that album - like "Accidentally Like a Martyr" and the
beautiful "Veracruz"- and beyond into his entire body of work through the years.
I
have always loved the "Sentimental Hygiene" and "Transverse City" albums.
Warren was able to be inspired and energetic enough to complete a CD called "The
Wind," over this last, difficult year which was just released on August 26th.
I am so glad that he was able to commit his struggles, loves, and goodbyes to
words and music for himself and for all of us who listen. He is truly a
songwriter's songwriter; many artists came out to be a part of this last album
including Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, and so many more.

Do please give him a listen when you can. The music lives. Requiescat in
pace, Warren.

With Love,
Robin Renée
