Hi all- Last night's show at The Grape Street Pub was a blast!  It was really energizing and lots of fun to be on stage with the band.  It is another kind of magic to dance in the whole musical arrangement... and the four of us sure make up a cool and funny cast of characters!  Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who came out to support us.  I'll keep you posted on more full band gigs coming up soon.  I can't wait for more of you to hear us.

I enjoy all the modes in which I perform- As you know, chanting- not so much performance, but sharing the experience of opening the heart is a true, centering passion.  The stripped-down acoustic performances are nice because there is the opportunity to connect with and convey the song close to the bones, as it was written.

WE DID IT!!!  The Robin Renée Band took 1st Place in the March 14th Eliminatory Round
at the Emergenza Festival!!    I can't say enough about how great it was to see so many people out at the show.  Thanks to all of you- we couldn't have made such an impact without your energy.

The band will perform in the Semi-Finals in May at North By Northwest in Philadelphia.  Stay tuned for more info!

I just wanted to let you know about a schedule change for today (sorry for the short notice), and some upcoming music and chant.

First, due to a death in my spiritual family, I will not be at Suzin Green's kirtan tonight in Princeton.
The times Suzin, drummer Dan Johnson, & I got together to chant over the last couple of weeks have been really wonderful.  I hope as many of you as can will attend this beautiful gathering on the Spring Equinox.

"I'm Coming Down" will be the featured 'Song of the Day' tomorrow, 3/21, at UKSounds.com.  However, they are calling the song "I'm Coming Home!"  (Hopefully they'll correct it by tomorrow, but I won't worry about it.)

'Song of the Day' showcases music to all the members of UKSounds.com, USASounds.com and OZSounds.com  as well as all their additional daily visitors.  The song will be available for free download for a 24 hour period only to subscribing members.

She organized the original vocal ensemble, Making Waves, around a song she had written supporting the struggle of community radio station KPFA. Her gutsy originals journey into the personal and political, with occasional travels into Russian and Spanish language lyrics.

Steph Furness is the founder of Aviatrix Productions, a record label/artist community/distro/pr engine based in New Hope, PA, on which she currently has two recordings. Steph sings candidly of her life experiences and welcomes others to relate their own. She has opened for nationally-renowned artists such as slam poet Alix Olson and Wishing Chair, and received a “Your Vote Your Choice†award in 2002 for her song, “Build it Up†from her debut CD, “aviatrixâ€. Steph has been singing in front of audiences since age 6 and claims voice as her first instrument. Her guitar and songwriting styles are ever-evolving, and have grown to include blues, rock and punk. Outmusic is a network of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered musicians and supporters. Performers, composers, lyricists, producers, recording artists, activists, promoters, press/media and even non-musicians who believe in LGBT music have joined Outmusic over the years. Outmusic began over a decade ago when a group of musicians met in an East Village apartment to share music and experiences. This became the open mics, which are still held monthly in New York. Since its founding, Outmusic has participated in the community in many ways. Some years the organization sponsored festivals, other years there have been compilation CDs or special events. Of course, through it all there have always been the open mics, where new and seasoned musicians still come together with goals not unlike the original sessions: to share music and experiences in a safe and welcoming space. Outmusic members are involved in festivals, concerts and other events. They also collaborate on projects and offer a valuable peer support system. Anyone can become a member of Outmusic. Robin Renée is a performing songwriter and a widely published freelance writer.  Her latest CD is All Six Senses.  She leads chanting events (vocals, guitar, harmonium, and percussion) throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and is the founder of Kirtan-o-Rama! -an online community of those interested in attending and/or creating gatherings for kirtan chanting and other similar spiritual practices.   She seeks to merge mantra and the mystical experience in all her work.

Karttikeya is a musician of many instruments and a composer in many styles.  He plays drums in the band Sea Monkey and keyboards in Dr. Keya.  In kirtan, Karttikeya plays the South Indian Naal drum and various percussion.  After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Karttikeya immersed himself in Hindu sadhana, living and studying for 12 years at the feet of Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami.  Karttikeya endeavors to blend the best of East and West in all of his projects.

Hey everyone!  First of all, a big thanks goes out to everyone who came out to support the band in March, and then again last Friday night for our Emergenza festival shows.  We really did have such a blast.  After last weekend's show at North By Northwest, we won't be moving on to the next round, but you helped us have a great showing with lots of enthusiasm.  The overwhelming theme of the night seemed to be death metal, so there were a few puzzled faces in the crowd during our glam-influenced mantra-pop set.  All the better to entertain and confuse you with!  LOL  Thanks again everyone, for all your encouragement.

Musical Magic is WOVEN in July for Celebrated Women Artists

The world can look a little daunting today for the average independent musician.
No one is quite sure how most of us will receive or purchase our music in the
not-too-distant future-Will we buy CDs or share computer files?  More difficult
still for many is the homogenous sound of radio where less-than-confrontational
pop rules the day.  The women of WOVEN (Women of Vision Entertainment Network)
carry the torch of the relevant and determined singer-songwriter with power,
integrity, and great talent.  Three of the organization's best known and loved
performers-Catherine Moon, Robin Renée, and Chrisie Santoni will grace The
Unitarian Society of New Brunswick with an intimate acoustic show on July 31st
at 7pm.

The music of Catherine Moon veers from ethereal dreaminess to hard-edged soul. 
With a vocal delivery that's powerfully expressive and often shades into the
spiritual, she sings her vision of a just and sustainable world.  Robin Renée
dubs her assertive and soulful material "Mantra-pop," as the sonic impact of
Indian devotional chant weaves through her passionate medium of edgy rock,
lyricism, and accessibility.  Her latest CD, produced by the world-renowned
Scott Mathews, is "All Six Senses."  Chrisie Santoni's clear-as-a-bell voice
reveals the deeply personal as it wraps itself around songs of heartache,
confusion, and love. She was the Grand Prize winner of the Unisong International
Songwriting Contest and received First Place in the John Lennon Songwriting
Contest earlier this year.

WOVEN, an emerging organization for women musicians, is a network for New Jersey
regional and local artists to work together for greater career impact.  The work
of the women, each in her own way, is marked by a deep interest in affecting
positive impact on the greater community.  In April, WOVEN co-sponsored "Jammin'
With Jody," an all ages kid jam with Jody Joseph and the Average Joes, Patty
Blee, Chrisie Santoni, and Kathy Phillips.  The show was a benefit for the
Jersey Jams Fund, a United Way music education program.  As WOVEN evolves, other
benefits and community-centered events will be on the horizon for these rising
stars.

"Kirtan-o-Rama!" Indian Chanting Finds Home in NJ Rock Performers' Hearts (and at Princeton Center for Yoga and Health)

India may seem a world away for many American performers, but its music and spirituality have great influence for two New Jersey artists, Robin Renée and Karttikeya.  With a diverse collective background in rock, jazz, classical, punk, new wave, folk, and more, the two come together with the common bond of kirtan- a form of Indian devotional chanting that is enjoying a recent surge in popularity in the U.S.  Robin Renée and Karttikeya lead "Kirtan-o-Rama!" regularly at Princeton Center for Yoga & Health (PCYH) in Skillman, NJ.  The next dates will be Saturday, July 17th and Saturday, August 21st at 7:30pm.

"Kirtan came to me both by way of a powerful life transformation and as a complete surprise," says Renée, who considers her life enriched after a spiritual awakening two and a half years ago.  A longtime NJ-based performing songwriter, Renée gained notice as a solo artist and with former bands Spy Gods and The Loved Ones.  She continues to perform her original songs, sometimes merging her melodies with the mantras that have become her passion.  She calls the combination "Mantra-pop."  She has lead chanting events (vocals, guitar, harmonium, and percussion) throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and has shared the stage with Krishna Das, the West's best-loved kirtan singer.  Her current rock-oriented CD, "All Six Senses," was produced by Scott Mathews, who has worked with George Harrison, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, and many more.   

Musican and composer Karttikeya defines his work through its use of many instruments and styles.  He is currently known as both the drummer in the band Sea Monkey and the keyboardist for Dr. Keya.  In kirtan, Karttikeya plays the South Indian Naal drum and he is innovative with various percussion instruments and found objects (his old fashion watering can sounds great!).  After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Karttikeya immersed himself in Hindu practice, living and studying for 12 years at the feet of Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami in Hawaii.

Kirtan utilizes the Divine Names from the Hindu tradition, though it can be enjoyed by people of all faiths and all walks of life.  Its easy call-and-response repetition makes learning a few words in the ancient, sacred language of Sanskrit accessible and fun.  Many experience deep stillness, bliss, and a profound sense of oneness with All.  It is soulful and peace-evoking, yet energetic and rousing.  Feel free to bring drums, percussion, and musical instruments to join the joyful noise!

Hello!  I hope this message full of stuff to see, hear, & do finds you well.  I am well these days- balanced and in the mood to write.  I was feeling a bit artistically blocked for a while, and thankfully, that seems to have left as mysteriously as it came on.  I think it is a very complex formula that governs these things. 

I have been bouncing off walls happy over the last few days, still basking in the afterglow of seeing my favorite band in Central Park... DEVO!  Equally fun was to have had the opportunity to do a brief phone interview with Jerry Casale in advance of the show for The Courier News, for whom I write often these days.  I know, I know... "Cling To You" doesn't exactly sound like it's heavily influenced by "Whip It."  :-)  Maybe the influence is more cultural than sonic; I love the alternative worlds created by my favorite artists, no matter how disparate some of them may be.

1) **Special Announcement**

Some of you already know this; it is time to make it official.  The Robin Renée band as it has appeared over the last year is no longer.  Bassist Evan Danziger has left to pursue his own creative works, and Cyndee Lee Rule is busy playing space rock violin for several artists this summer and is hoping for more of the same.  Due to health issues, drummer Kevin McDevitt has needed to take time away.  Thankfully, he is recuperating well, but will need some rest and relaxation away from the kit.  I am doing fine, quite busy with planning upcoming shows, writing journalistically and creatively, and envisioning what the next incarnation of musicians will be about.  I am optimistic, and definitely pleased that this band ran its course and devolved relatively painlessly.  So unless otherwise noted, shows will be me flyin' solo.  So we'll see what's next... Anyone know a good tabla player?!  :-)

Kleve, Germany-based label, Low-Budget-Studio.com will include "Thursday Morning Afterglow" on its upcoming MAP (Musicians Against Pop) Sampler.  The CD will be pressed at the end of August.  The new label is "specialized in the Heart / Vibe / Passion & Soul of the Sixties and Seventies and will... distribute MUSIC, handmade and full of passion!"
