Hello!  I've got a full schedule coming up in May... but right now I especially want to call attention to this *RSVP Required* house concert and workshop event I am hosting on Thursday, May 10th.  Irina Rivkin sang for us here in Atco, NJ once before and it really was a great show.  Please come out for this relaxed evening with an incredible talent.

Dear Friends,

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to all those who came out to the Live Devotion CD release party on Friday night.  It really was "Mantra-Pop" -- I'd say that both club and ashram favorites were duly represented on the dance floor.  :-)   Drummer Karttikeya and guitarist Dave Ellenbogen came by to jam & represent, we all shared a nice mix of singing and mingling, and Integral Yoga of Princeton really was a great venue for the event.  I hope all of you who picked up the CD are enjoying.  Thanks again.

All the shows in April are important ones to keep the momentum going-- please come out to these NJ and Philly gigs!

But first, there's this...

What does independently defiant, post-punk, spiritual new wave, quirky mantra-art-pop, edgily introspective musical poetry sound like?

"Her smooth delivery flows through, and I expect her to pop up on all sorts of interesting projects delivering wonderful post-modern soul to the masses."
San Francisco Spectrum

"She draws from rock, punk, New Wave, and folk, but a spiritual awakening brought South Asian chant into her musical vocabulary as well… sometimes merging her melodies with the mantras that have become her passion."
 – Princeton Packet

"…one of the Garden State's finest singer-songwriters whose spiritual pop is a solid mix of Joni Mitchell, Joan Armatrading, and The Beatles."
– Courier News

If Robin Renée were to start a religion all her own, it might well hold Groupie Consciousness as its central tenet. She chases after the God/dess within with a reverence and fervor not unlike her passion for the music that moves her most- acts as disparate as Elvis Costello, Krishna Das, James Taylor, Gary Wilson, and Devo. Those in the know are realizing that Renée is worthy of just as much hot pursuit. Oh, and that religion? There'd also be lots of yoga, a strong belief in cartoon physics, a little sexiness, and zero dogma.Such is the musical and magical world of Robin Renée. Her accessible tunes with a spiritual twist have forged her personal genre--Mantra-Pop! The seeds of her diverse influences can be uncovered therein, as well as a longtime focus on Eastern and eclectic mysticism, the mystery that cuts to the core of this powerful singer and wordsmith. At a live show today you might catch a solo acoustic set, a collaboration, or pure kirtan- a form of Hindu devotional chanting in Sanskrit, with which she finds deep resonance. Live Devotion - brand new and soon to be released is Renée's first recording dedicated wholly to sacred chant. Borne of one inspired recording session in October 2006, the seven long tracks evoke peace, passion, and the presence of Universal Love. With the sexy, rock feel of "Jai Ma" to the traditional "Sita Ram" to the fun, multi-part "Om Shanti Krishna," Live Devotion is a fresh take on an ancient tradition.Renée's previous offering, All Six Senses, is the real-life chronicle of one caught in the act of cosmic transformation. Themes of love, seeking, and celebration emerge through a medium of edgy rock, accomplished singer/songwriter lyricism, pop hooks, and the sonic impact of chant. All Six Senses was produced by Scott Mathews, who has worked with artists as fabulous as George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle and many more. Two of its tracks, "First Sight" and "Thursday Morning Afterglow" won Honorable Mentions in the 11th International Billboard Songwriting Contest. All Six Senses follows In Progress, Renée's full-length CD debut (2000). It follows In Progress, which was applauded in much alternative press across the U.S. She has often credited the sight of David Bowie in a dress with opening her eyes to transformation and expression. It was no doubt an inspiration, but Renée's real drive comes from within. She has battled through the wearying grip of depression, has been enveloped in the bliss of spiritual ecstasy, and lives to tell the tales. She is not afraid to listen to what the voices in her head tell her: Live for your truth, keep it real, and make music that matters.

Kirtan-O- Rama with Robin Renée

Kirtan is a form of Indian call-and-response devotional singing quickly gaining popularity in the West.  We sing mantras (sound vibrations) in the ancient, sacred language of Sanskrit.  The repetition of these mantras brings one to deep stillness, bliss, and to a profound sense of oneness with All.   Feel free to bring drums, percussion, and musical instruments to join the joyful noise! Robin Renée is a creative intuitive with over 15 years experience as a performing songwriter, healer, and meditation practitioner.  She leads spirit-based writing workshops and chanting events and has shared the stage with Krishna Das, the West’s best-loved kirtan singer.  As a freelance journalist, her work has appeared in Curve Magazine, PanGaia, and many other publications.  Her most recent alt pop CD, produced by Scott Mathews (who has worked with George Harrison, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, and many more), is All Six Senses.

You can listen to a brief interview on "Lazlo's Den" @ BlowUpRadio.com tomorrow, Thursday, March 29th at 8pm.  It was recorded today, and I talk a bit about the making of Live Devotion and the intermingling of chant with songwriting.  It was an easy-going conversation; hope you can tune in.

Menage a Music proudly announces the release of Live Devotion— the first CD by Robin Renée wholly devoted to sacred chant.  The follow-up to the well-received All Six Senses, Live Devotion heralds the full-lotus expression of Renée’s own genre, Mantra-Pop.

Borne of one inspired recording session in October 2006, the disc features seven long tracks that evoke peace, passion, and the presence of Universal Love. With the sexy, rock feel of "Jai Ma" to the time-honored "Sita Ram" to the fun, multi-part "Om Shanti Krishna," Live Devotion is a fresh take on the ancient practice of kirtan, a call-and-response style of chanting from the Hindu tradition.  Most of the songs are sung in easy-to-follow Sanskrit, with some English lyrics thrown in for good measure.

The alt-folk rocker shows her roots on this self-produced effort with acoustic guitar, electric bass (Dave Dreiwitz), and Western melodies.  She ventures into exotic instrumentation with the Indian-influenced harmonium, tabla (Ed Feldman), and tampura (David Ellenbogen), and with various percussion including the African udu drum (Karttikeya).  Vocalists Kate Evans and Amée add beautiful and skillful harmonies and response vocals to the mix.

An awakening moment about five years ago turned Renée’s already mystical gaze eastward.  The new recording was foreshadowed by mantra-referencing songs like “I’m Coming Down” and “Holy River” from the 2002 release All Six Senses, which was produced by the world-renowned Scott Mathews, who has worked with artists including George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle and many more.  Renée first met the emergence of chant in her creative process with an element of surprise, then with a sense of balance.

“I’ve always been a deeply spiritual person, but I kept it somewhat muted and cryptic in the lyrics.  It’s exciting to put it out there so freely now- It feels like a natural integration,” she said.

Always complex and intriguing, Robin Renée is a singer/songwriter, a freelance writer, an activist, and a general free spirit.  Her live shows run the gamut from rock to kirtan; recent performance venues include Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, the largest retreat center for yoga and holistic living in the U.S. in Lenox, Massachusetts and Rock Out! at Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania for International Women’s Day.  Her growing audience can expect more relevant, edgy songwriting, tranquil calls to God/dess, and all the smart pop to be found in between.

For more information on Robin Renée and Live Devotion, visit www.robinrenee.com and listen to tracks at www.myspace.com/robinrenee.  Media may contact menage98@... or 856-767-8998 for review copies and interviews.

Hello everyone & Happy New Year!  I am pleased to report that all is going well with the birth process for the new CD!  It is called "Live Devotion," and was recorded in October.  It will be my first CD of devotional chant music & I have lots of people to thank for giving me the encouragement to document this part of my musical landscape.  You can listen to demo mixes of two of the tracks at

BTW, if you've got a MySpace page of your own, hit me up for a meaningful MySpace friendship while you're there.  :-)

"Live Devotion" came through the mastering process with pretty much with flying colors yesterday, & I don't anticipate too many changes, so... PRE-ORDERS are being taken officially as of this moment.  Please spread the word!  I know quite a few of you have been anxious for such an announcement, and your support will help get the music out even quicker.  All the info is on the site:

Thanks in advance!  I'll let you know when the actual release date shows up, and stay tuned for info on a CD release party.

If you are in the Central Jersey area and have a noontime lunch break, I hope you'll come out to my upcoming acoustic show at Rutgers U.  The Red Lion Cafe hosts shows by Rutgers alum, students, and staff on Tuesday afternoons & it's always nice to see folks out to listen at this kind of unusual gig.  Joining me will be the most awesome Kevin McDevitt on percussion, first time we've worked together since The Robin Renee Band circa '04.

Hello, my friend!

I had a great musical and mystical experience *finally* recording the forthcoming mostly kirtan CD at Loho Studios in NYC last Tuesday.  I love the rough mix results and can't wait to finish mixing and mastering.  It was my first real experience with recording mostly live... I think it's really the only way to capture the energy of this kind of music and outpouring.  Working with some old friends was comforting and enjoyable (excellent, intuitive bassist Dave Dreiwitz and the lovely and talented singer/songwriter Kate Evans).  There was Ed Feldman on tabla, David Ellenbogen on guitar, and Amee Kurtz shared vocals with Kate.  Karttikeya, with whom I've played many a kirtan gig, :-)joined in on percussion.  They were all fab!  Greg DiGesu, another musician from my New Brunswick, NJ days of old will help out on post-production.  I will keep you posted and share it all with you ASAP.

Hey!  I finally did it!!!

Yes, folks, a picture of me--along with a few close friends-- appears in this week's National Enquirer-- on the stands NOW, LOL.  No, it's not for my music or my wildly noteworthy love life (ha)... it's for attending a Cuddle Party (www.cuddleparty.com) in New York City.  It's such a hoot to be in the Enquirer... my little tiny piece of trash pop culture.  :-)  You can barely see me, but if you do check it out, the story "Latest Dating Craze: Cuddle Parties!" is on page 18 (September 18, 2006 edition).  I'm at the top of the big photo snuggling with my friends Reid, Marcia, and others in a cozy formation.

Cuddle Party is actually a really beautiful trend and it's a good thing it is getting coverage so far & wide.  I'm glad to have occasion to mention it on this day when so many have terrorism on their minds.  And hey, now I can read the cover story and find out the truth about why Tom and Katie are SLEEPING IN SEPARATE BEDROOMS!  :-)

Ahem... in other rr news... I have formed a band for my kirtan recording project, which will most likely hit the studio in early October.  I will indeed be scheduling more live shows, but for now, here's one to put on the calendar.  It's been a long time since I've had the opportunity to do some poetry performance along with the music:

Hello, my friends! If you've got spring fever as badly as I do at

Please come out to Rockwood Music Hall, next Saturday, May 27th!!

I am very excited about my first full performance at Rockwood Music
Hall in New York City next weekend. Thanks to all of you who have
already told me you plan on coming out to the show! I was there to
host an Outmusic Open Mic back in March, & I really love this
classy, intimate listening space with hip, NYC energy. This is a
stage I'd love to return to, so your support would be awesome.

If you haven't been out to anything I've done at Princeton Center
for Yoga and Health, you haven't seen me with drummer/percussionist
Karttikeya, who'll be joining me at Rockwood. We have been working
up a fun & interesting Mantra-Pop set, so please join us at 6pm
SHARP on Saturday, May 27th.

Here is a bit more about the Exciting The Writer! workshop this weekend -- I do hope you join me for this 3-hour tour--not to a deserted island, but inward to touch your creative source  :-)

Exciting the Writer!

With performing songwriter, poet, and freelance journalist Robin Renée

Saturday, March 4th   1-4pm   $50

Connecting to the freely-flowing Universal Energy all around us is a profound and immediate way to open to the creative Source.  This 3-hour non-judgmental experience will take you on a journey through movement, silent meditation, music, and chant as portals to the awakening writer within.  There’s always something new to discover, whether you are a beginner, a professional, a slam poet, or a closet novelist.

Robin Renée is a creative intuitive with over 15 years experience as a writer, performing songwriter,

healer, and meditation practitioner.  As a poet, essayist, and freelance journalist, her work has appeared

in PanGaia, Elmore Magazine, Songwriter’s Market, Curve Magazine, That Takes Ovaries! - Bold Females and their Brazen Acts (Random House), The New York Quarterly, Blessed Bi Spirit: Bisexual People of Faith (Continuum Press), and many other publications.  Her current CD, produced by Scott Mathews (who has worked with George Harrison, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, and many more), is All Six Senses.

**There are lots of changes and updates over at RobinRenee.com.  If you explore "Media Kit," you'll find a couple of new interviews, and in the not-too-distant future I might get bold enough to post some of my totally untrained visual artwork.  Yep, I've been bitten by another art bug.  I may have no clue at all in the visual arts, but I sure am having fun.  :-)  Do check out the updated site & let me know what you think!
