Hi Greg,
Interesting to hear you talking about Pirana - the Shud used to do quite a
few gigs with these guys - especially mentioning Tony (Hamilton) and the
jazz-rock fusion aspect - when I saw Tony a couple of years ago, even though
he wasn't doing a lot of 'live' playing, he sure has kept up with and delved
into many of the modern guitar techniques we have seen emerge over the last
10 -20 years or so, especially the understanding and implementation of the
modal side of things - no small feat to navigate one's way around this
area - so his interest in all things musical is still evolving, and that can
be a bit of inspiration for us all in these changing times.
Cheers,
Tim Gaze

Also, a thank you to Duncan Kimball who went out of his way to make sure Jim
was OK and got home the other night after the Blues Doctors gig. On yer.

Tim,
Good grief! Fancy meeting you here after all these years! I'm glad
there are people still out there who remember Pirana (like me, you
probably remember most of them as far back as The Nomads}. Actually,
I'm not at all amazed that Tony Hamilton has kept abreast of
technique
developments. I remember him as an incredibly eager, fast and
dextrous
player.
From the correspondence in this room, I see you're still making a
great and powerful noise. Good on you. Next time I'm in Oz, I'll make
it a point to drop in on a gig.
Greg.

I can assure you that is true. With Tim and the Jim Conway up front, the
Blues Doctors reap some righteous riffs, let me tell you. A pleasure to
behold!

BTW - I must also regale the list (pay heed David Kent) with the news that,
instead of Tim's regular bass-man Chris Bailey at the Blues Doctors' gig
last Friday night, the bassist was none other than Tim's old mate from
Kahvas Jute, the redoubtable Bob Daisley. Talk about a pleasant surprise!

BTW did anyone catch the Bob Marley special last Saturday on SBS? This week
it's an Iggy Pop retrospective.

Oh and don't forget - the Masters Apprentices doco is SUPPOSED to go to air
this Friday, but it's not listed in the ABC program guide. I will try to
find out what's happening ASAP. The Masters' site still says 5/5/2000, but
it hasn't been updated since mid-Feb, so it's anybody's guess.

Cheers all

Hey folx

Nice to see a bit of "pick-up" in the discussions
here. Some points:

1) Congrats Dave Kimball on your Saints website.
Haven't fully explored it yet but it's looking pretty
good.

Incidentally, a friend lent me a CD called "Earth
Music", in which a number of Aussie artistes cover
songs by other Aussies. So you get Ross Wilson doing
"The World's Got Everything In It" by Beasts of
Bourbon, Dave Steel doing INXS' "Don't Change", and so
on. But! It's got Ed Kuepper doing The Loved Ones'
"Sad Dark Eyes" and Hunters & cOllectors doing "Know
Your Product". And Chris Bailey (the Saints one) does
a number but I forget what it is. Well worth seeking
out - or email me privately for a CD-R thereof...

2) Speaking of Chrisses Bailey... Dunks (or Tim): is
the Chris Bailey who plays bass for The Blues Doctors
the ex-Angel/gangGAJANG guy?

3) Pirana: if you read my (admittedly skimpy)profile
on the band in MILESAGO, you'll note I take pains to
point out that the band presented a far wider musical
pallette than the obvious Santana comparisons of the
day. They did indeed embrace some BS&T/Chicago
influences, not to mention a very funky pop
sensibility as evidenced by their singles (eg "Here It
Comes Again"). I recorded the band in the early 70s,
it's a good recording except that they were mixing to
front-of-house in stereo, and my line out from the
desk was only mono. So in some songs, where vocals &
guitars are panned mercilessly across the stereo
picture, I lose some of the signal.

4) Speaking of my tapes, I gave David Kent a handful
of reel-to-reel tapes to play around with and tweak,
with a view to making some private CD-Rs. So far he's
trying out a variety of Spectrum/Murtceps and Daddy
Cool recordings I made; then I guess he'll tackle
aforementioned Pirana and one I really wanna hear
again after all these years, The Shud, including Tim
Gaze (laterday lineup with flute etc). I'll let you
know how these turn out, and maybe we here in R&R
Scars can set up a swap club to share these artefacts.

**THIS IS A NON-PROFIT ENTERPRISE** If anybody has a
problem with the above, let's discuss, because I don't
wanna tread on any toes!

Er, not much more to say just now, except, let me
recommend a marvellous read: "Dear Boy - The Life Of
Keith Moon". A rivetting biography on one of my
all-time heroes. Thoroughly researched and insightful
beyond the Who milieu.

Also (I know there's at least three fans on this
list): Look out for the new XTC album, "Wasp Star".
Due for release in Oz on 22/5 and in the US on 23/5.
It kicks major arse (doesn't it Dunks?)

Joe Camilleri does a splendid version of "Gypsy Queen"

I'll bring in the disc tomorrow and list the tracks

Well, I'm all for this! However, I'm not certain of the legal
ramifications. Are we/Milesago likely to get sued by people over this?
Does anyone know of the history of doing these kinds of things?
Personally, I think it'd be great and am willing to share my meagre
bootlegs with people.

Paul,
I received a copy of that a few years ago, just after it was
recorded.
Nice job, with Chris Stockley faking Kerryn's mandolin part and Brod
Smith copping Chris Blanchflower's harp.
Joe has a lasting affection for the song. When I was in Melbourne in
Sept., I looked him up at an acoustic gig -- as in no amplification
whatever, not even a PA -- he was doing in a banquet hall in St.
Kilda, because I heard he had produced the Adam Harvey "new country"
(Jeez, what an obnoxious marketing concoction that was!) album that
also contained a version of GQ. Harvey had a No.1 country hit with it
last year (lots of airplay, actual sales: 12).
So, over the last decade, I credit Joe with having kept the song
alive, and with generating a steady trickle of royalties for Kerryn
and me. I'm grateful to him. Lovely bloke.
Greg.

Hi all,
I phoned the ABC in Adelaide today and was told that the Masters

fact not due to be aired anytime in the next 8 weeks.
Does anyone have any more info??

The repeated reshceduling of "Radio" doesn't surprise me in the least, Lynn,
but it sure pisses me off.

I have a good mate who works at ABC Gore Hill; he is making enquiries for me
as we speak, so I'll know something for sure in the next few days.

Which reminds me - I forgot to pass on some other regrettable TV news.
According to my friend (and as Keith Glass hinted some time back) the ABC's
proposed "History Of Australian Rock" series has been shelved, probably for
good, and is not likely to be either completed OR screened, ever.

According to my informant, the production was shut down after it ran gravely
over budget and behind schedule, and was nowhere near completion - largely
because (to paraphrase him) those involved basically didn't have their shit
together.

(pause while author beats head on table)

I mentioned the series when talking to Mick Fettes of Madder Lake, some time
ago; Mick said that he had talked to the ABC people last year, but was left
in little doubt that Madder Lake would not be interviewed or included in any
major way.

A bloody shame.

Hi All,

I heard from Ed Nimmervcoll early last year that production was stalled
basically because the people producing it had no direction.

Basically it was being run from Sydney and involved Clinton Walker.

According to Ed, it was being run out of Sydney, and I had the impression
it was Sydneycentric.

He wasn't involved and no one had talked to him about the project.

At that point he was frustrated by what he heard about it, and was going
to ring them and try to get involved.

Other than that I know nothing, and have heard nothing else

David

Hi Rockers,

Anyone else get pinged by the "Love Bug" virus? I got a couple of messages
from a member of another list, and merely chuckled - I own a Mac.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a good weekend. I sure did.

Keith, it was great to see you again, albeit far too briefly, and many many
thanks for the loan of the wonderful "Approximately Panther" video. We'll
have that beer SOON, I promise! Also glad to hear that the "History Of
Australian Rock" project might still have legs. (Do they need a production
assistant? I'm VERY available, and I work cheap.)

I caught up with Paul Culnane and David Kent in Canberra over the weekend.
As Paul alluded to last week, David has been working on (or should that be
working over?) some of Paul's old live tapes. Hope I'm not jumping the gun
here Paul (?!) but while I was there, David arrived with a great surprise
package of two CD-Rs which he has cut from the tapes. Included was a rare
Spectrum/Murtceps gig which Paul recorded in Canberra, ca. 1971 (with
permission, of course!) and the unexpected bonus of a long-forgotten tape
(from radio, I assume) of the Hoadleys Battle Of The Sounds from the same
year! Rickapoodly and a fandoogly!

David Kent has very kindly given me a draft copy of an article he is writing
about GO-SET magazine, which he is hoping to have published in an English
journal later this year. I'll be putting that up on the site as soon as the
electronic version arrives, and many thanks to David for allowing us to
preview it on MILESAGO.

In TV-Land ... Needless to say, the Masters doco did not go to air last
Friday. Latest news is as follows, from the Masters website:

      Latest News

      Updated 29/4/00

ABC Television has re-scheduled the screening of the documentary
'Turn Up Your Video'. The new date for broadcast is Friday, 23rd
June at 10.30pm. A long-form version (98 minutes) will be
available for purchase in ABC Shops. It features complete film
clips and some rare footage that has never been broadcast along
with recent interviews with the Jim, Doug, Glenn and more. It's a
fascinating look at one of the great Australian bands and a rare
insight into the fledgling Australian music industry.

(I'll believe it when I see it.)

Other than commending you to watch/listen to Roy & HG's inimitable calling
the first State of Origin match - not much to report. I haven't checked the
cable programs this week, but the only major musical item on free-to-air
this week is:

SBS, Sunday, 7.30 : a British documentary about our mega-successful
Aussie ABBA cover band, Bjorn Again, which is followed - for those with a
strong stomach - by this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

By the way, I don't know if it's avaiable yet, but I read last week that
Renee Geyer has written a tell-all memoir, entitled (rather aptly, it seems)
"Confessions Of A Difficult Woman". Look forward to reading that one, and
great to see some of Australia's "rock chicks" getting into print as well.

Yes folks, we're celebrating here at MILESAGO (albeit in a fairly
small way).

Last weekend the site passed the 1000-hit mark, and as of today we've
had 1045 hits since 1 November '99. Which is not bad really,
considering that we're not yet registered with the major search
engines (this week's chore).

Thanks to everyone who has logged into the site, and got us this far.

Hi all,
I am trying to do some research on `Strings Unlimited',
John Farnham was lead vocal in 1966.
The other members were: Stewart Male, lead guitar, Barry Roy, second
guitar, Mick Foenander, organ and Peter Foggie, drums.
I am wondering does anyone know where I could contact any of the
above people.
I don't know where to start….hope someone can help

Hi folks

A few new tidbits for youse all:

- My interview with marvellous Mick Fettes, of Madder Lake, is finally
finished (hurrah!) and is now up on the site. Just follow the "Interviews"
link on the main frames page. I'm pleased with it, and Mick's happy with it
too, which is even better. (He has some interesting things to say about our
beloved Godinski.) Many thanks to Mick for sharing his memories with us
(with hopefully more to come from Brendan Mason and co. soon!).

- I've beefed up the page on the WHO/SMALL FACES tour with an extract from
the recent bio of Keith Moon (thanks Paul!). It gives a good overview of the
main events of the tour. (Just hope they don't sue me!) I recently spotted a
small book about the tour, called "A Fortnight Of Furore" which goes into it
in great detail, and has exclusive interviews, etc. I'd love to buy it, but
balked at the pricetag - $40 for an A4 softcover booklet! Yoicks!

- Greg Quill has sent me some more fascinating memories and observations
about his career. I should have a revised version of the Country Radio page
up this week. Stay tuned.

- The long-awaited Masters Apprentices documentary was reviewed in the SMH
TV Guide today, and it's now available on video for $24.95

Sadly, very little in the way of music on free-to-air this week ... unless
you're a Ricky Martin fan.

Cheers!

James Brown Accused Of Sexual Harassment

                     May 22, 2000, 10:25 am PT

A former employee of James Brown filed a $1 million sexual harassment
lawsuit in California Superior Court Friday (May 19), accusing the
Godfather of Soul of a slew of sexual harassment charges.

Lisa Ross Agbalaya, who was President of West Coast Operations of The New
James Brown Enterprises from April 1993 to Febuary of this year, alleges
Brown boasts to his employees that he has "bull testicles," smokes marijuana
in the office, and demands sex from his female employees.

The lawsuit alleges the following specific examples of inappropriate
conduct on the part of Brown: "In November 1999, only a short time after
James Brown had surgery to treat his prostate cancer, Agbalaya attended a
dinner party with Brown and defendant's employees. While eating dinner,
Brown told Agbalaya that the government gave him 'bull testicles' so he
could come 'harder and stronger than ever.'

"During a business trip," continues the suit, "Brown, who was dressed in
sweatpants with no shirt and who had been smoking marijuana, approached
Agbalaya. Brown presented Agbalaya with a pair of zebra
print underwear and demanded that she wear them while he massaged her with
oil telling her, 'I want to rub you down.' When Agbalaya rejected Brown's
demand, Brown told Agbalaya that that he just wanted to
make her 'feel good.' Brown also repeatedly attempted to improperly touch
Agbalaya by hugging her and holding her around her waist. Agbalaya attempted
to discourage Brown's advances but could not leave the premises where there
were guard dogs and an electronic fence."

Shortly after that alleged incident, Agbalaya claims Brown attempted to make
her sign a disclaimer which said she would never sue Brown for any claim.
The lawsuit also claims Brown told Agbalaya she was "built like a stallion,
just right for riding"; that "the only way for a woman to be successful is
to sleep with her boss"; and that "if anything went wrong with her
relationship with her husband, he would marry her and take care of her
kids."

Upon complaining to her superiors about Brown's alleged numerous sexual
advances, Agbalaya claims she was told that was "simply how James Brown
was." From that point on, according to the suit, Brown began reneging and
rejecting several commitments booked and/or orchestrated by Agbalaya,
thereby paving the way for her firing.

Agbalaya is suing Brown, The New James Brown Enterprises, and James Brown
West for sexual harassment, hostile work environment, sex
discrimination, wrongful termination in violation of public
policy, retaliation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and
negligent infliction of emotional distress.

The lawsuit opens with the following: "It appears that 'Sex Machine' is more
than simply a title of one of James Brown's many hit records; it would also
appear to be a description for James Brown the man."

Hi folks,

Just a short note (thank you very much, Matt Finish) to let you know that
the transcription of John Broughton's radio interview with GREG QUILL is now
up on the site. Just follow the Interviews link on the main menu and you'll
find it. I hope you enjoy it - John did a great job and it's a great read
IMHO - and many thanks to him for letting us put it up on MILESAGO.

To digress: the new XTC album "Wasp Star (Apple Venus Vol. 2)" has just been
released locally and comes HIGHLY recommended. It's REALLY REALLY good.

While I was at Redeye picking that up, I sifted through their Oz music racks
and found some nifty Vicious Sloth reissues - Melissa's "Midnight
Trampoline" and Galadriel's self-titled album! Yum.

Also spotted an interesting EMI France 2CD compilation of Axiom and
Mississippi tracks, under the banner "LRB - The Early Days" (or something
like that). Looks like a combo of tracks from Mississippi and the two Axiom
albums, but not sure how complete it is. Had all the usual suspects like
'Kings Of The World' and 'Little Ray of Sunshine' but lots of others too.
Unfortunately it was $45 and I had already spent my allowance. Bummer.

EXCELLENT bit of news just to hand: Mick Fettes has kindly put me in touch
with bandmates Brendan Mason and Kerry McKenna, and I'll be interrogating
them soon. (I bet they can't wait!) hahah. BUT - I'm really excited to
relate Mick and Brendan have confirmed the existence of a more-or-less
complete demo of their fabled "Brave New World" project!! This was, of
course, the concept work they developed during '74 with David ("Journey to
the Centre of the Earth") Measham, which never came to fruition. Equally
exciting is today's news from Mick that there may well be some surviving
tapes of BNW material which they cut in Perth in 1974 with the ABC! More on
this soon!

Finally - Mr Glass, I recently picked that Canetaod compilation with the
18CQ tracks, and I have to agree with you that they still sound pretty damn
good. It's really interesting to compare the 18CQ and Cam-Pact versions of
'Drawing Room', and I'm intruiged by "Distant Relative" (which I now realise
is where some of the music on "Approximately Panther" comes from). What IS
that one about?

Have a good weekend!

Hi folks,

A few items for you:

- MILESAGO registered 1300 hits as of today!

- I had a great chat with Kerry McKenna from Madder Lake last Friday, adding
to the archive of information we're collecting about the group. I'll be
posting that to the site as soon as possible. One fascinating item that
Kerry passed on: when he and Brendan Mason were playing in San Sebastian in
the late 60s (before Mick Fettes etc joined and they changed the name), they
did quite a lot of work around Melbourne as a backing band for solo singers
like Ronnie Burns and Russell Morris. According to Kerry, San Sebastian was
Russell's backing group the first time he ever played "The Real Thing" live
on stage. How about that?!

- "The Jim Conway Blues", the recent documentary about Jim's life and music,
is screening on SBS this Friday at 8:30pm. Don't miss it! (Seems SBS have
picked up the baton that ABC have dropped re: the broadcast of music
documentaries etc.)

- The "Turn Up Your Radio" saga continues ... according to the Masters'
website, the screening date has been rescheduled AGAIN! Now it will
apparently screen on 23 June at 10:30pm. [How appropriate - JJJ are playing
Public Enemy's "Don't Believe The Hype" as I write.]

- I had a brief but VERY interesting talk with Warren Barnett, Festival's
chief archivist, last week. He seems like a delightful chap, I must say.
Naturally I congratulated him on the excellent work he's been doing with
Festival's reissue series.

Warren tells me that there are more in the pipeline, and that as Festival's
50th anniversary approaches there will a wideranging series of reissues from
the Spin, Go!!, Infinity and Mushroom and Du Monde labels. He's also doing a
lot of work with Vicious Sloth, restoring and reissuing albums through their
label, like the Melissa and Galadriel LPs I mentioned previously. Warren got
my mouth watering even more by revealing that Volume II of the excellent "So
You Wanna Be A Rock'n'Roll Star" compilation is in the works. Cooool! (If
you don't have this already - just get it! 3CD set for about $4O, loaded
with stacks of classic 60s and 70s singles, and many very rare tracks.)

The only sad note was his revelation that the reissue program has been
undertaken in the face of some considerable opposition from certain sections
of the company, who feel that FMG's resources could be better directed
towards promoting "artists" like Britney Spears .... *sigh* ... le plus ça
change ...

- On a related subject - a little bird tells me that we can expect a name
change for the Festival-Mushroom Group in the near future.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable week,

Dunks

Hey folks. It's a little quiet out there, so I thought I banter.
While out catching "Ghost Dog" at the flicks last night, I saw the
preview for "The filth and the fury" documentary about the Sex Pistols.
It looked interesting at the least. Hopefully it will have a little more
substance than "Westway to the world", although the latter was quite
enjoyable. Being a full-length feature, it might cover a little more
ground.
For those that haven't seen "Ghost dog", it's not bad at all. Very good
soundtrack. Highlight of the movie for me was this exchange, by two
mobsters who'll not see sixty again: "His name is Ghsot Dog." "Ghost
Dog? What, like some kind of gangsta rapper? They always call themselves
names like that. Snoop Doggy Dogg, Method Man. My favourite was Flava
Flav from Public Enemy, with that big clock?" He then breaks into Public
Enemy's 'Cold Lampin'. Jim Jarmusch is a legend.
On that note, I managed to find a copy of Alex Cox's "Straight to
hell", which features Jim along with Joe Strummer, the Pogues, Courtney
Love, Elvis Costello, etc. Despite it's incredibly bad reputation, I
found not only enjoyable, but bloody smart and highly satirical.

Onto Aussie stuff, Ed Kuepper's new album is out in a few, and I've
managed to secure an interview with him for the Saints site, which
should be good. He's touring in a week or two as well, so look out for
him.
Also managed to pick up Nick Cave's latest, a collection of love songs
interspersed with an essay on songwriting. Quite interesting. He'll
never get past his obsession with Kylie Minogue, evidently.

Anywa, that's all from me. Catch you all later.

Hi folks!

A relatively quiet week this week, although there are some special treats in
store (more on that next week).

Our friend John Broughton recently interviewed Mick Conway (Captain Matchbox
Whoopee Band, Conway Bros, National Junk Band, etc) and we hope to
transcribe for you that in the near future.

The Masters Apprentices special was pretty good, although I thought it spent
a little too much time on the reunions and not nearly enough on the Mick
Bower era '65-67. (Maybe that was an artefact of it having to be trimmed
down to 50 mins for TV?) Nevertheless the archival footage and the rare
promo clips were terrific -- seeing the film clip for "Because I Love You"
in colour for the first time was amazing. Hopefully the video version has
the full versions of all the clips.

Major music events on TV this week:

- set yer videos for the new Jimi Hendrix special which screens on SBS on
Saturday night at 8:40pm. The show focuses on the period in late '69 when
the Experience broke up and Hendrix put together the short-lived but utterly
glorious Band Of Gypsys, with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox. The show includes
interviews with Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles, and
previously unseen film footage of the fabled New Year concerts at the
Fillmore East, at which the legendary Band Of Gypsys live album was
recorded.

- for Foxtel subscribers, their music outlet CHANNEL V have aquired the
rights to the BBC's "Classic Albums" series; the Fleetwood Mac "Rumours"
episode screens in the "PM" slot this Friday night at 7:30. Also, Foxtel's
ARENA channel are currently screening the superb BBC's superb documentary
series "Dancing In The Street" every Tuesday night at 9:30pm.

---------------

A final, urgent note of warning, which I exhort you to pass on: if you
receive an email from an unknown sender with a subject line such as "Funny"
or "Joke", or which has text that says "The male and female life cycles"

DO *NOT* OPEN IT -- DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY!!

This is a new version of the 'I Love You' virus which today attacked and
closed down the entire TAFE/DET email network (where I work). Watch out - if
opened it *will* infect your computer. It has caused a fatal hard-drive
crash for at least one of my colleagues here at TAFE, causing the
irreparable loss of all the files she had on her PC.

BEWARE!!

Duncan

Hi from me. I'm a new member who joined up after searching for "Masters
Apprentices" at Egroups in the wake of the ABC special.

I'm from Adelaide (Masters Territory) and have been into this era of
music since the era itself despite being a mere (?) 40 years old.
Definite advantages to having brothers who were teenagers in the late
60s.

I bought the video on Saturday and yes it does include the complete
videos although "Elevator Driver" has a voicever in the middle.

The clip for "I'm Your Satisfier" is, uh, 'interesting' to say the
least. ;-))

The video seems badly edited though. The interviews kind of jump around
from topic to topic like they're assembled in the wrong order or
something. There's a bit in the middle too where the soundtrack and
video and slightly out of sync.

Am I imagining things or was the Hoodoo Gurus version of "Turn Up Your
Radio" actually limper than the original? Seeing the old clip of it
reminded me of just intense this track was back in the days when (as
Glenn A Baker said) there wasn't a whole lot of kiss arse rock'n'roll
on the radio. Does anyone else think that TUYR might have actually
predicted the rise a little later of the likes of Slade or maybe Suzi
Quatro, some of whose stuff is similar in style?

Perhaps not coincidentally, a free street paper here last week did a
cover story on original Masters drummer Brian Vaughton. I'll transcribe
the article and post it. He no longer runs the Kings Head Hotel - he
runs a chicken shop in Hutt Street and yes, the "from drum sticks to
drumsticks" pun is present and correct.

On a similar note, I overheard someone in a record store here saying he
knew Mick Bower and apparently Bower has never been consulted about any
Masters reissues that have ever appeared. I can only hope he gets some
royalties at least.

That's enough from me for now. I'd be interested in hearing other
comments on the Masters special.

Steve

Unusual artworks, for sure. Very 'Clockwork Orange'! Some London gallery I
guess?

I haven't seen the longform video but, yes, I did feel that it could have
been better assembled than it was. The presentation was a bit cheesy -- on a
scale of 1-10 (with Dancing In The Street as a 10), I'd give it a 6, maybe a
7. I also thought the continuity was a bit disjointed. It really leaped over
the early years in an embarrassing rush.

>Am I imagining things or was the Hoodoo Gurus version of "Turn Up >Your
>Radio" actually limper than the original?

Well I don't begrudge them doing it -- Im sure they had fun, and it IS their
song, of course -- but I'm reminded of the motto of the Russian Space
Agency: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

>Seeing the old clip of it reminded me of just how intense this track >was

Good call! No question at all in my mind. I think I actually wrote something
similar in the Masters page on MILESAGO -- that TUYR and also '5:10 Man' are
definite glam rock precursors, in my book.

>Perhaps not coincidentally, a free street paper here last week did a

Groan!! But thanks -- I'd LOVE to get a copy of that for the website please
Steve.

>On a similar note, I overheard someone in a record store here saying >he

Hopefully he gets his royalties (although plenty of people never have -- ask
Keith Glass or Tim Gaze) but I agree that Mick Bower was very conspicuous by
his abscence. I would LOVE to interview him!! I wondered if perhaps that
period is a bad memory for him -- after all he did have a pretty serious
breakdown in '67 -- but it seems churlish that they didn't even speak to
him, or Rick Morrison, or indeed any of the other 65-69 members except
Brian. To be fair, Jim DOES give them their due in his book, so maybe it was
the producer's/director's fault?

I also thought it would have been good to talk to people who were there and
actually knew them back then (e.g Doc Neeson, Brian Cadd, Farnham, Howard
Gable, Stan Rofe, Molly) and surely even just one or two grabs from some of
their actual fans would have been a nice touch? It was just kind of ...
predictable: the usual suspects trotted out to pontificate -- Baker (LOSE
that stupid hat, Glenn), Ian McFarlane -- the stock footage, the interviews
etc etc. The only major suprises were the film clips themselves.

Don't get me wrong -- it's GREAT that they've done it, but it just struck me
as a bit pedestrian. When you consider the kind of multimedia facilities
available now there is/was real potential to do something a lot more
creative.

Any comments?

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts Steve, and I hope you enjoy the MILESAGO
site and the list. Look forward to hearing more from you soon!

Hi everyone,

Who's going to the GST party on Saturday. My plan is to be there.

Just on the Masters Apprentices program.

I did like it, but I must say that critically, I agree they spent too much
time on the reunion bits. But the other thing that really got me was the
ranting and raving of Glen A Baker. Why did they have to wste so much
time cutting to him. They cut to him 4 times, and in those bits her said
nothing of relevance or importance. Everything for him, is with respect
to himself. He said nothing that added to the value of the program. They
would have been better cutting to other musicians from the period, or at
least Ed Nimmervoll or some other journalists who wrote about them at the
time. I did get the impression that the program was Sydneycentric. The
focus on the Adelaide scene they came from was not even properly
addressed.

My other comment is that they neglected to fabulous Nickelodeon" album,
which was amongst the first live albums recorded in Australia. They also
neglected to mention tha later line ups of the band with Peter Tilbrook
(I think that's his name). A full doco of the band would have covered
this. They didn't really discuss the Hoadley Battle of the Bands
competition.

The film clips were good to watch. I was particularly interested in their
view of England when they got there the first time.

I hope the 98 minute video is actually better, but I cannot imagine that
it will have any different perspectives than what has already been put
forward in this. Did you notice how they cut the songs down opening and
closings with the middle bits all missing.

I think its great that a program has been made about the band, but I wish
they had gone into more depth. I expect more for 8 cents a day, plus GST
(after Saturday). Why don't they use real music historians/sociologists
when they put these programs together instead of media wannabees.

I think the Vaughton footage on the show dates back to the 80s reunion
era. I remember he and Keays being interviewed on a current afairs show
outside the Kings Head at that time and I'm sure that's what was used
in the special. Vaughton looks quite a bit older now.

The new Vaughton article mentions that he hasn't touched Keays' book
and has problems with Jim's recollection of events as expressed in
interviews over the years.

Dear Dunks- & co- and all did you know that channel V have a whole shitload
of hardly ever see XtC footage including the docco done as a part of the
release of O&L as well as a lot of the clips post Look Look --- my daughter
found them on the Channel V voting site ---Hmm whaddaya reckon all you
chalkhillsians etc

on a different note I was a little disappointed with the Masters special I
would have liked a bit more footage of their performances less backslapping
talk but it was enjoyable -the full version should be heaps better

Hey folks!

Good to see everyone is still alive. Will I get eaten if I mention I
didn't catch the MA special? And though I didn't catch the program, I
agree with David regarding Glen A Baker in general.

I got a two hour chat out of King Edmund himself today, all of which
will be thrown onto the page sometime this week. Ugh, much text. Once
again I contact someone who is reputedly rude and nasty and they turn
out to be helpful. I'm beginning to think there are no rude and nasties
left. The staff at Hot seem to think I should write a book on the
Saints. I think they're crazy. Edmund is interested in joining the list
however, so I'll pass the address onto him and etcetera. For those
interested, his new album is out and is very good. If you can catch him
on tour, do so. Very enjoyable! He also mentioned he never got his free
CD for that peice in the Missing Links album. ;)

Firstly I reckon if you didn't vote for GST then you shouldn't have to pay
it! Secondly I haven't seen the Master doc yet as I was unable to be in front
of a TV but, much as I like Glenn personally - he just doesn't know anything
first hand about this period & I'm not even so sure about Nimmervol and
neither are humble enough to admit it or do careful research which would make
them the experts they portend to be. More when I've seen it. K
