JAY-Z COMES IN AT NO. 1 ON CHARTS, BUT BELOW PROJECTED MILLION SALES
Rapper JAY-Z's "Vol. 3...Life and Times of S. Carter" sold enough copies its
first week in stores to claim the No. 1 album spot on the SoundScan chart, but
the 426,000 sales figure falls short of the million mark Def Jam Records was
hoping for. Last week's No. 1, DMX's "And Then There Was X," fell to No. 2
with
398,000 copies, followed by Celine Dion's "All the Way: A Decade in Song"
(269,000), "Christina Aguilera" (233,000), Dr. Dre's "Dr. Dre 2001" (225,000),
2Pac+Outlawz's "Still I Rise" (216,000), "Now That's What I Call Music! 3"
(211,000), Santana's "Supernatural" (180,000), Mariah Carey's "Rainbow"
(166,000), and Korn's "Issues" (161,000).
PUFF DADDY PLEADS INNOCENT OF HANDGUN CHARGES BEFORE GRAND JURY
SEAN "PUFFY" COMBS denied charges of criminal possession of a handgun in his
grand jury testimony on Tuesday. JENNIFER LOPEZ, who was not charged, told
grand
jurors on Dec. 30 that she did not see Combs with a gun. Lopez also met
separately with prosecutors on Tuesday for further questioning related to the
recent shooting at Club New York.
PAUL McCARTNEY DONATES MILLIONS TO ANIMAL FRIENDLY CANCER RESEARCH
SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY has made a donation to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center in New York and Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson in the name of his late
wife, LINDA MCCARTNEY. The donation, made on the stipulation that the research
would not involve animal testing, is reportedly in excess of two million
dollars.
PHISH SCORE HIGHEST GROSSING YEAR-END GIG WITH FLORIDA SHOWS
Jam band PHISH topped "Amusement Business" magazine's list of the
highest-grossing New Year's Eve concerts, netting $11.6 million for their show
at the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation in Florida. Coming in second
were
the EAGLES, JACKSON BROWNE and LINDA RONSTADT at the Staples Center in Los
Angeles, with $6.2 million, followed by BILLY JOEL at Madison Square Garden in
New York with $4.4 million.

widow is being sued by a woman who claims to be the only child of the jazz
trumpeter. Jean Bryson Tomas, daughter of Constance Bryson, whom Gillespie had
an affair with, is seeking a court ruling that would make her co-owner of
copyrights to musical compositions, enabling her to receive royalties. . .
MATCHBOX 20's as-yet-untitled new album is set for a May 2 release. . .
MARILYN
MANSON will preview twenty-one watercolor paintings on the gallery section of

U.S.
MICHAEL STIPE will donate a signed black and white photograph he took to the
first annual Athens Mental Health online auction benefit sponsored by the
ArtAllDay.com Website. . . STONE TEMPLE PILOTS frontman SCOTT WEILAND was
transferred from the Biscaluz Treatment Center, where he has been serving a
one-year sentence, to the care of the Los Angeles Department of Health on Dec.
30. Weiland is scheduled to be released from prison on April 1 . . . The
VIOLENT
FEMMES will tour in support of their upcoming studio album, "Freak Magnet,"
due
out on Feb. 22. The tour begins in the States with three dates before the band
begins a European tour lasting until early April.
