. . . and they are free and easy to join. I joined Music BC just for
the heck of it, but I still can't vote on WCMA. Maybe it takes time to
update theit member list. I'll try again tomorrow.

If you are a member of one of the organizations shown on this page, you
can vote in the WCMA awards.

Cheers,
Chris Green.
My mistake...Romi doesn't hook up with Gurf & Sam in Italy...but she
does in Texas just before Christmas.
Their "cluster" show in Cobalt at the Great Northern Picnic back in
August was one of the best shows I've ever seen by anyone, anywhere.

This is from Romi. If you're on her email list, you already got it,
but for those who didn't, you should know:
"I have been nominated for Outstanding Roots Recording and Songwriter
of The Year for my latest album Sweet Somethin Steady by The Western
Canadian Music Awards! I am pretty honoured due to the stiff
competition in both categories.
There is online voting at www.westerncanadianmusicawards.ca and I sure
would appreciate the votes.
Thanks so much.

Hi all --
I posted in the "Files" section here (with Romi's permission, of
course) a recording from the KNON live broadcast of a new song of
Romi's, called "Just Like The Rest."
On that show, she also did "Sweet Something Steady," and Graham
Wilkinson and John Evans each did 2 songs. The between song patter is
fun as well. I recorded the whole show, but due to a faulty wireless
connection, there are quite a few gaps and other flaws that make it
hard to listen to. Diedre, the show's DJ, said she recorded it, and
I'll bet she will share if anyone cares to contact her through the
station.
Enjoy.

That song is available for listening here (link to Romi's site):

My guess (and it's only a guess) is it is Joanne on lead and Romi on
harmony vocals on that song. Apparently the Off the Wagon album is
still available, as well. Go to Merch on Romi's site.
This is apparently Joanne's current project (or one of them, anyway):

Hi,
I was listening to Canada's CBC radio's "Definetly not the Opera" show
many years ago and heard the song "Don't Love A Lot" by "Off the Wagon".
(I hope they got their SOCAN cheque in the mail!)
I really like the lyrics and sound of the song: the voice(s) were
amazing.
Was that Joanne on the lead vocals or Romi?
I was able to read Joanne Rodriguez profile and her gig at University
of Manitoba Radio at the following link.
http://www.themanitoban.com/2001-2002/1017/arts_4.shtml
What I would like to know is what is Joanne up to these days? Any
performances / websites?
Will Joanne and Romi collaborate any time soon?
Thanks
"Don't love a lot, but I love hard"
Hi all. I am new to this group, but not new to Romi's music. I have
even met a few of you. By way of introduction, my name is Mark, I live
in NYC, and I am a musicholic. (Oops, wrong group.)
In case you had not caught this on her schedule, Romi has a live radio
show this Wednesday, July 11, 4 pm (central time)from KNON, Dallas,
with John Evans and Graham Wilkinson. The good news for us non-Texans
is it streams. Go here and follow the links to the live broadcast.
http://www.knon.org/
Speaking of Graham, I had the pleasure of seeing him in NYC last week.
Nice show with a bunch of his NYC musician friends, playing a lot of
Aaron Wilkinson's music.

seen him all over Texas, you've seen him in Cleveland and Toronto and

Yeah I'll be there...can't hardly believe it... the excitement's enough

to write into this thing.
Romi will be back in Toronto and area in early March for a couple

But you don't have to wait that long...Brock Zeman and Dan Walsh will
make their triumphant return to Woodstock on Saturday, January 27th,

You can see the Quality Inn from the 401, use the Norwich Ave North
exit.
I just heard Angeline on Stewart McClean's Vinyl Cafe on the CBC radio.
What a kick...sounded great even in mono. Sturat mentioned she was
nominated in the songwriter category of the Canadian Folk Music awards
and when it was over he said "if you liked that you can catch her at a
show in alberta or if not there somewhere else, Romi did over 200 live
shows in the last year."
Hey they're kicking her out of the 'Peg again and she's doing some
shows with a bunch of Fred Friendly Friends so check her out if you
get the chance.

Romi Mayes that is.
From The Record.com (Waterloo, ON)
(Nov 9, 2006)
FRED EAGLESMITH MILLY'S CAFE (A MAJOR LABEL)
After releasing a series of acclaimed albums on American labels,
Fred Eaglesmith is back on his own label with Milly's Cafe.
Recorded at the shack in Port Dover, where he hangs his hat when he
isn't on the road, the album features musical sidekicks Willie P.
Bennett, Dan Walsh, Roger Marin and Scott Merritt, among others.
Nobody writes sad and lonesome better than Eaglesmith. Kansas is so
sad, so lonely, so tender, it defies analysis. "It's always Kansas
where I always break down. . . that's where I fall apart," he
laments.
Eaglesmith digs deep into the dark corners of the heart. If his
words don't break your heart, his voice will. Rocky, a poignant
elegy to an old cowboy worthy of Guy Clark, leaves a lump in your
throat. Milly's Cafe is available at sawdust@...
DAN WALSH DIESEL & SMOKES (BUSTED FLAT RECORDS)
Excuse Dan Walsh if his acoustic debut sounds like a Fred Eaglesmith
song. Walsh was a member of Eaglesmith's Flying Squirrels for a
number of years. He's also accompanied Willie P. Bennett and is
touring with Winnipeg alt-country diva Romi Mayes.
Closer to home, he co-produced Kitchener singer/songwriter Lynn
Jackson's sophomore release, which makes his first outing on Busted
Flat Records all the more meaningful.
Diesel & Dust features eight atmospheric instrumentals composed by
Walsh, who plays guitar, lap steel, dobro, piano, organ, bass, drums.
Three of the tracks are solo, with the remainder in a band setting.
The album spans acoustic blues, alt-country, folk, folk-rock and
bluegrass. Walsh's talents as a multi-instrumentalist are well known
in Canadian roots music circles, so the surprise comes with his
genre-bending compositions.
ROMI MAYES SWEET SOMETHIN' STEADY (INDIE)
Look out Kathleen Edwards. There's a hot, new, alt-country chick on
the block and she has the goods.
Winnipeg's Romi Mayes' first full-length album is produced by
legendary alt-country artist Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Mary
Gauthier, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Slaid Cleaves). It features 11
brooding, non-nonsense, romantic dirges written or co-written by
Mayes. Such titles as Desperately, The Other Dame and Smoke More
Than I Drink convey a sense of the album's songs. With a voice that
can cut wrists, Mayes is joined by Chris Carmichael, Scott Nolan and
Dan Walsh, in addition to Morlix. Mayes is attracting a strong local
following. She was a hit at Hillside a couple of years ago and she
raised eyebrows at The Boathouse more recently. Expect Sweet
Somethin' Steady to make annual roots music award lists.
My house in Woodstock on Fri. Sept. 29, 2006 at 8 p.m. Cost will be 15
dollars a person, bring your own refreshments and a snack to share.
Due to the small venue I will have to limit it to 30 people so email
me at skumm at rogers dot com to reserve yourself a space and request
directions if needed.
Brock will be backed up by our favourite dobro player. This is a
chance to see one of the country's best young songwriters in an
intimate setting. If you've ever had the chance to see or hear Brock
play you know what I mean...if you haven't you should remedy that next
Friday night.
I caught Romi, Dan and Chris at the Factory Grind in Perth ON, the
second time I've caught her show and again I was blown away. Her
solid writing and playing, so tastefully texturized by Dan and Chris
provided an acoustic sound so often desired and so often missed, but
not here. It was nice to see local Dawson Willsey sit in on stand up
bass so effectively....nice touch.
While there I picked up the new disc and haven't been able to put it
down since. Looking at the credits, I could see why. Not only are
Dan and Chris backing but it was produced and performed on by Gurf
Morlix whose work with Lucinda Williams, Ray Wylie Hubbard, etc. has
pleasingly bent my ear many a time...
Looking forward to hearing you folk again, and again, and again ....

Here are some pictures from the house concert George (Skumm) Douglas put on

This Thursday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. in my Mom's backyard at 816
Grosvenor Street in Woodstock. Opening set by Texas Joe Gee making
his Canadian debut as a solo act (a lot of you will remember his
stellar guitar picking with Audrey Auld Mezera at last summer's
southern picnic). This would be an excellent time to pick up his new
CD: Gee Joe, while he still has copies with him.
Headlining is Romi Mayes who will be celebrating her brand new release
Sweet Something Steady and will be accompanied by Dan Walsh and Chris
Carmicheal. Dan will have his new CD: Diesel and Smokes along with
him for sale. Chris is an amazing guitarist from Winnipeg who has
worked with Romi (and tons of other 'Peggers) for a number of years
and I personally am really looking forward to hear the three of them
play together. Romi's disc was produced by Austin producer wunderkind
Gurf Morlix (Ray Wylie Hubbard, Slaid Cleaves, Mary Gauthier) who will
be playing the Northern Picnic this weekend and was one of my faves at
last years southern picnic and in Bellows this past June.
It promises to be a once in a lifetime show in a gorgeous setting on
a warm Southern Ontario August night.
See ya there.
Joe Gee opens for Romi Mayes with Chris Carmicheal and Dan Walsh.
15 dollars (all proceeds to artists) bring lawn chairs and
refreshments, and probably some spare cash for Dan's Romi's and Joes
CD's.
It's in my mother's backyard in Woodstock, write to skumm at
rogers.com for a map and directions, ther'll be lots of familiar
Fredhead faces there as well as the best music going in a gorgeous
setting on a warm summer night. It's not going to rain but on the
miniscule chance that it does we've been offered an alternate venue at
the Mosaic Restaurant which is next to the Via Rail staion on Victoria
and Henry streets in town. Chef Jed and I and the Pursers were
plotting to start a regular dinner concert series at the aforementined
restaurant... look for more music in Woodstock soon and come on out
Thursday August 10th for the show of a lifetime!
There's a poster for the show in the photo section of this group,
print it out or e-mail it to your friends.
Hey everyone
My new record is now available here:
http://www.baritonedan.com/music.html
This is an album of instrumental music featuring some great
musicians from around North America. Stop by and have a listen to
some of the clips.
Romi and I are leaving tomorrow for a 6 week jaunt thru western
Canada and Ontario. Romi's new album should be available by July
28th if not before.
Hope to see some of you out on the road......
Thanx
Dan
