Silver City's own up-and-coming 7-piece all-original reggae band Root Skankadelic will headline WNMU's Great Race festivities on Earth Day, this Saturday, April 22nd.  The free, all-ages celebration events will begin at 10am at Old James Stadium, the field across from the WNMU Fine Arts Center Theater (FACT) at the east end of College Street.  

Root Skankadelic will play from 4pm until 7:30 pm.

A dodgeball tournament between the Great Race teams will go until approx. 12pm.  A band from the university will be performing in the morning; WNMU has a softball doubleheader starting at 12pm; From 1.00pm-2.30pm the rock band Armsbound from Las Cruces will be performing at Old James Stadium;  the Pit Crew and Driver competition hosted by Multicultural Activities and Student Affairs will begin at 3pm and immediately following Roots Skankadelic will perform a free, all ages show (Traffic note: please park in the Student Memorial Building parking lot as the upper lots will be reserved in the evening for an event at the FACT put on by the Mimbres Regional Art Council).

Dan Ryen, student government senator in his final year at WNMU says:  "I have always tried to be an active interface between the university and the Silver City community.  Music is something that really brings people together, and that's why we are producing this free all-ages show featuring Root Skankadelic.  Music and cultural events like this will help bridge the gap bertween the community and the college.  A lot of community members know about Great Race but don't really participate or join in the week-long festivities.  This is an opportunity to give back and thank the entire community for their continued support.  By providing a positive festive experience, we wish to show the community that we love what they do for us and invite everyone to share in the Great Race tradition." 

Ryen adds, "Regardless of what people may think about WNMU's place or past reputation in the region, just know that the many individuals and organizations at WNMU are dedicated to building a positive foundation with which to create a complete and undivided community in Silver City. "

A spokesperson for Root Skankadelic issued this statement, "Considering the increased requests we get to play outside Silver City, this is a great local event for us to play for the second year in a row.  Last year, the students decided to hold the party off campus, and I think everyone agrees that we rocked the house.  We all had a jammin' good time for sure!  This year plans to be even better with the full cooperation of the university, students and the community.  We love being part of the love vibe that connects all the different groups."

Hey Skanka-fans!  Thanks for your patience while we have taken a break
from performing publicly to enter the studio for our first produced
CD.  We've been steady at it for a while, and should only have a few
more recorded-live sessions until the real mixing fun begins...

Let me tell you right now that what we have recorded sounds really
good.  If you like us live, then you'll love this CD!  Joe Victor is
doing a superb job producing us from his Mimbres studio.  An advance
thanks to Joe for all his hard work and expert input.  First-class
roots all the way..... Gang of Hair Productions... such a nice ring.

Look to hear something more concrete around the first of January. Until
then, just keep sending friends to download bootlegs off our site:
http://www.rootskankadelic.com  .  This is gonna be a good product to
sell and promotion (festivals, tours, all that stuff...)

TGIF….  Hello Live Music Fans!  Root Skankadelic is hosting a New Vibe
Revolution Party this Saturday @ the Buffalo Bar Dancehall on Bullard Street in
historic downtown Silver City.

This is a 21& Over show.
Cover charge is $5.
Doors open at 8pm, we will start playing at 9:42 pm.

We need as many folks at this show as possible.  After a strong run of 5 shows
in the past 6 weeks, Root Skankadelic will NOT perform in public again until
late December.  This is your last time to see us this Fall!

After this Buffalo show, we will go underground again to prepare for the much
anticipated New Year’s Eve show….  and studio recording starts in earnest nxt
week…. Stay tuned to this list for more details as things develop.

Thanks in advance for your kind and generous support.  And, of course, if you
want off this list just let me know.

Hello Reggae Fans!  First of all, monumental thanks goes out to all who joined us at the Wildwood Hot Springs show last weekend.  It was a huge success by all measures… we will surely do it again and again as long as folks continue to support live reggae music and are willing to drive into the fabulous Gila Wilderness to get it.  What a wonderful day-and-a-half it was for the band.  I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as we did.  Please let the list know what the best parts were for any of you who care to share…..

 

Now for the inside scoop on our nxt show….  Root Skankadelic is playing for the first time in Las Cruces this Friday Sept. 23rd @ El Patio in Old Mesilla.  We are doing a muti-band, 2-day “risky music” showcase called Psychedelithon that you can read more about at this web link:

September 17, 2005 - Root Skankadelic will team up for a special concert performance with the Funk Farmers at the Wildwood Retreat and Hot Springs. Enjoy an evening of music and dance and then stay the night at the resort's camping area and hot springs. Cover for admission to the concert area is $8, tickets are being sold in advance, any that might be remaining will be sold at the door. By special arrangement, Wildwood Retreat and Hot Springs is offering access to their hot springs and camping area for only $5. ROOT SKANKADELIC TO PERFORM AT PENNY PARK

 

WHEN:  SATURDAY, SEPT 3, 7:00 PM

            Roots Skankadelic, a local reggae band, will perform a community concert to help kick off the 2005 Penny Park Membership Drive this Saturday, September 3.  The band has been performing at venues around Silver City for the past year, and looks forward to playing for an all-ages audience.

            “We look forward to playing outdoors and seeing families and friends dance with one another,” states Josh White, bassist for the band.  “We are also happy to contribute to the continued use and growth of the facilities at the park.”

            This summer has been full of music at Penny Park.  Bands such as Compas, Captain Cactus, Socket, Your Sister Cheryl, and Ripcor have all played over the summer.  “It is great to see the amphitheater getting used by all of these musicians, and even better to see so much of our community enjoying the shows,” comments Charlotte Griffin, a member of the Park’s board of directors.

            In addition to being a fun community event, the concert also marks the beginning of Penny Park’s annual Membership Drive.  The park was built on small donations that added up—to over $400,000 in 1998-99 to build the park’s original infrastructure.  “Penny Park’s operating budget continues to be financed chiefly through donations from the community, and if everyone who uses the park gives a bit (memberships range from $25 for an individual to $1000 and up) then we will be able to continue to keep the park trash free, weed free, seal the wood each season, organize events for the community to enjoy, and build new infrastructure,” explains coordinator Mattie Johnson.  “Many people who are moving here or who have recently had children don’t realize that this park is privately owned and operated for public use.  In order to keep it safe, fun, and beautiful we all have to do our part.”

            Admission to the Root Skankadelic concert is $3/individual, $10/family, or free with a new or renewed membership to the park for 2005.   For more information on membership, the concert, or about Penny Park, please call the park office at 534-0261 or Toy Town at 388-1677.

Good morning Friends of Root Skankadelic.  Wow, we sure didn’t know that yesterday’s rainbow party was gonna be like that!  Fantastic all-ages event for the four of us to play…

 

Thanks to all who came out to see us for the city’s Flag Day celebration downtown.  Daniel, Roland, Yasha and I happily performed about 5 songs and jammed out a bit w/ our tribal-vibe stuff.  Drums, claves, beat-box, chant… you know, the usual…  Looked like folks were into it… and we had a ton of fun playing for the fine, fine folks of Silver City as we all played in the water under a double-circle man-made rainbow.  Such an enjoyable time for kids young and old and in-between.  I see why Fred likes to return to Silver to share his gift w/ all of us. 

 

And a big thanks to Fred for inviting us to do this w/ him.  He’s done this event all over the world, and we are pleased as punch to become associated w/ such a wonderful statement of love, compassion and humanity for all the earth’s people.  As Fred said more than once, “the rainbow is the world’s flag that cant be owned by any one country”.  Word to tha’ motha’ on that, Fred.

Hello Music Fans!  Just to let you know, Root Skankadelic has just agreed to play a free all-ages show tomorrow afternoon in beautiful downtown Silver City.  The city is doing a rainbow-maker party for Flag Day.  Check out www.rainbowmaker.us to see what it’s all about.  They’re expecting quite a large crowd for the festivities.  Starting around 4 pm, ends before dark….. of course.  I was told to look for announcements in the Sun-News today and on the radio today and tomorrow.

 

We are honoring a last-minute “step in for the other folks” request from the party-givers, so we couldn’t schedule to have the entire 8-person group… It will be more of a skeleton-crew, mildly choreographed jam session than anything….  It will be a good chance to see us in semi-experimentation mode….  We love playing from the soul no matter what the circumstance….

 

And thanks to all who showed up at the Drifter on Saturday.  It was a definite success by all measures.  We love how you support us and we intend to keep spreading the love and good vibes as long as you’ll show up and share in the energy exchange…

Hello live music fans! Just writing to let you know so you can let everybody else know that Roots Skankadelic, Southwest New Mexico's favorite reggae dance band, will perform at the Drifter this Saturday, June 11th. Doors open at 8pm.  $5 cover.  We are anxious to play some PHAT new tunes and see new faces come along with the regulars. 

 

Look for flyers around town and in this week's Mexican food deliveries....

 

And thank to those reggae fans who came out to see us at the Mainstreet Street Dance in the Morning Star parking lot.  There were a lot of folks there dancing and wailing about.  Just what we like to see… dancin’ in the street is good for all of us…. Very healing Ive heard….

 

Tell all your homies and homettes to come to the show and visit our yahoo web site to sign up for this email list.  As you already might know, we have photos of the band there and you can leave messages for the members.  Soon we’ll have song samples that you can download.  We’ll let you know what’s up, when.  All over the Southwest, the word is now out that Roots Skankadelic is the hot reggae dance band.  Folks calling from Bisbee, Terlingua, El Paso, ABQ, Tucson, Phoenix and all the places much closer like Demming and Las Cruces….  But we still love our local Silver City / Gila / Cliff / Mimbres folks the best… always will.  You guys rock!!  And we wanna play some seriously funky music for you this Saturday.

 

Bring a friend.  Bring ten friends.  Let some brotha’s (us) know how you feel about ‘em…!  We feel all the love and we need it in the house on Saturday night….  Not planning on playing in public again for another 6 weeks or so…..

 

Let us know if you have questions.  Have you heard that we actually play Swaggae music, our funked-out version of Southwest reggae… get it?  SWA-gae, one of the band said “Southwest With Attitude” reggae… I kinda like that…. Swaggae.  What do you think?  No matter what we call it, we are definitely creating a new and different reggae sound…. For sure!

 

Saturday is gonna be fun.  This is all a lot of fun and we owe it to our fans who support us so well.
