HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY, RUSS COLUMBO! 01/14/08 Russ Columbo (1908-1934) was the first of the popular Italian-American "crooners". In his day, his popularity nearly equaled that of his friend and rival, Bing Crosby. When he was killed by his best friend in a bizarre shooting accident on September 2,1934, he became one of Hollywood's "gone-too-soon" legends (i.e., James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Jean Harlow, et al.) whose true potential would never be realized.
