What can I say? This was my fourth show so far on this US/Euro tour, and it
was by far the best. Hands down.
From the first notes of From Hank To Hendrix, it was clear that this would
be a special night. Ambulance Blues was slow, silent, serene and special. It
seemed to go on for ever. Then I was expecting Sad Movies, but it turned out
to be Kansas! I was almost freaking out! Then on to a 'mandatory' AMNAM.
After he was done, I expected NOSTK, but it was Try! Woohoo! Another
freaking-out moment right there. This is where Bry requested Stringman. Neil
said how he would have to look it up on Google, and he doesn't like to do
songs that he doesn't know well. He went on to say that some songs go
together and played Harvest. After the song there was a LONG discussion
between Neil and somebody in the audience about the sound! The guy
complained that the 'amp' (or PA as Neil would say) was buzzing. They
apparently fixed it later and Neil appreciated that the guy had commented on
it. Then after Mellow My Mind he went to the piano again, and just started
playing Stringman. That was an awesome moment. He made one minor mistake,
but did great! I liked the HOG and Old Man, great version.
Even before the first song, there was a painting with "Too Far Gone" on
stage, but eventually never got used. He opened with The Loner, and it was a
"normal" set after that (if you can call it that!). He skipped The Believer,
and said "We'll do something we haven't done before.. Well.. We HAVE done it
before, you know." And he played a short, but rocking Powderfinger. Anthony
played piano on that one, that sounded perfect to me! Then on to a No Hidden
Path that seemed to last over 20 minutes, but the tapes will tell. Neil
ripped his fingernail again, just like the first Amsterdam show. He seemed
to be hurt but went on and on and on.. (and on).
Finally, Cinnamon Girl, and a cool RITFW, with Pegi on acoustic guitar, and
Anthony on a gold top Les Paul. Ben was on the hammond and moved to the
"Dove of Peace" synth later.
We were hoping for The Sultan, let's hope he saves it for Wednesday!
There's so much I have forgotten here.. Listen to the tape! (soon I guess)
