Nice late night report from Roel,
Was certainly a white hot show last night in Amsterdam. Neil took a while to
warm up but in the second half he really seemed to be enjoying himself!
The incident with the guy in the audience seemed to change the atmosphere - the
conversation went on for what seemed like a couple of miniutes; felt like it
could've gone the wrong way at one point but ultimately Neil was mellower from
then onward.
Certainly was ODD! something like the following:
I think it was after Harvest.
Neil obviously wanted Larry to come and take away the guitar he'd just played it
on. Then comes the voice from the balcony, "... something's humming and it
sounds like s##t."Neil turns around " ...you see that's why I tried to fix it",
crossly.
Definitely annoyed.
Neil continues, "...it was out of tune, but I didn't think it sounded like S##t
...".Tense moment.Neil continues the conversation with the balcony guy about
where it's coming from. "Your Amp" says the guy, "it's like a buzzing noise.
Bzzzzzz"."I don't have an Amp," says Neil, "it's a PA".Still tense.Just the guy
in the balcony and Neil looking towards equipment and the guy gesturing at where
the noise is and saying "I'm just trying to bring it to your attention"."... is
it ruined?" says Neil to house front.Another voice somewhere else confirms there
is a buzz."You see I can't hear that", says Neil. "We'll have our technical
people look at that. If the product is flawed. We strive for
perfection".Gestures to the desk and crossly up toward the balcony. It goes on a
while longer before the balcony guy and another few in the crowd shout that the
noise is gone now. "We just strive for perfection" repeats Neil. "..just want
it to be right". Sits down and plays ATGR.Odd.
There was another moment in the acoustic set:I think where Stringman was first
requested and Neil said he'd have to google it, didn't wanna play it wrong and
had one more chance to try it before he was out of Amsterdam."I'll have a think
about that", he said.Sits still on the chair, laid back. For a long time. Some
noise from the crowd ........ "I'm still thinking. This is what I look like when
I'm thinking ...."
A couple of times in the electric set Neil is heard to say to the band ".. let's
play something different" or "d'wanna play something different Ralph?"
"Play 'Helpless' Neil", shouts a voice."Naahh", he snarls.
Powderfinger was short and sweet but a real joy to hear out of the blue like
that.NHP was sublime. Just sublime. Some really primeval noises coming out of
old black. Cool mellow feedback ending. After the things I've posted about his
timekeeping recently I have to say that Ralph was solid.
Long drawn out ending to Cinnamon Girl.Outrageous RITFW with Anthony Crawford
and Peggy joining in and Neil really spitting out the words, juming up at the
mic at each line ... he REALLY means it ...
Great, great show.Great atmosphere. Some nice surprises and nice to see the man
enjoying himself.
Hope the good spirit continues.
I'll be very near the front on Wednesday night in AMS.Overwhelming urge to shout
out in a quiet moment "give us the bloody Archives Neil ya stubborn old
buzzard". Pretty sure I won't.
