Neil wrote and recorded about 100 songs from july 1963 to may 1972. The B.S. Box
Set ant The Archives Vol.1 released some 20 songs, previously unreleased.
In the die hard fans community there's been a great lot of talks and
speculations about a great amount of unreleased songs, stored in the Neil
vaults. I recall a David Briggs interview (circa 1989) speaking of 200 songs
recorded and mixed. In an another interview Neil promised a Decade II with 2-3
songs for every album and 397 unreleased songs.
So many...Actually there isn't a real evidence of the existence of hundreds of
unreleased songs. Neil himself, in these last years, has been more cautious
about this boast and it seems that his infamous Archives are getting
substantially a compilation of his released records, plus some rare songs. Joel
Bernstein, privately interviewed many years ago, didn't speak about a great
amount of unknown songs. During the years, detailed lists of recordings
sessions, precise Neil reports about the making of his records, have shown us a
lot of information. The thorough book Shakey has revealed other important
details. Neverthless ,Jimmy McDonaugh denied the existence of hundreds of
unreleased songs.
What's the truth? I guess that Neil, like many artists, has made many demo tapes
of his songs, home recordings, not destinated to a public release. So it's
possible that are not surfaced information yet about these unknown songs. On
the other hand, Neil is very jealous of his music and songs and he is used to
speak about his songs and record them again after many years.
Another guess it's that for unreleased songs, Neil and his men mean alternate
versions, different takes, live recordings shelved and so on...
In my humble opinion, I don't think that the unreleased songs exceed the amount
of a hundred songs. For sure, the next releases'll deny me and try the existence
of real, hidden treasures.
