This is an excellent opportunity to refute the
erroneous charge that Rusties love everything Neil
does, and that we dump on people for not liking a
particular thing that Neil has done.
It's one thing to be an informed fan who understands a
lot about Neil's artistic approach but who doesn't
happen to care for Greendale. I think that's a
legitimate position to take.
It's quite another thing to be an ignorant HOGTT who
wants Neil to put on a Paul McCrapney show, and who
does not realize that Neil's perversity in front of an
audience dates back to the Kelvin High School
cafeteria. People who don't understand the most basic
historical facts about Neil Young's approach to His
audience can't be taken too seriously when they
complain.
I am a huge Neil fan. But I do not like everything He
has done. I think ER sucks and I think the Shocking
Pinks show was one of the worst concerts I've ever
been subjected to. There are plenty of intelligent,
well-informed Rusties right here who disagree with me
on that, and I have absolutely no problem with that.
They like ER and they enjoyed the Pinks shows.
Reasonable Rusties can disagree.
Another example: I have consciously tried to develop
both a taste and an artistic rationale for what I call
"Grunge Jazz Feedback," or GJF--those long
kite-trailings at the ends of certain songs, a mid-90s
experiment in Neil's development. Some Rusties don't
care for that "noise." Again, reasonable Rusties can
disagree.
In sum, being a Rust Fanatic does not mean that you
like everything He does, nor does it mean that you
will necessarily agree with other Rusties. The
hard-core fan is NOT attacking the HOGTT simply
because the HOGTT dislikes a given work. (That is the
false charge against the hard-core fan.) Rather, all
true fans should attack HOGTTs for no other reason
than the fact that HOGTTs are pathetic closed-minded
morons who understand nothing about Neil and who base
their ignorant spewings on prejudgment and some
variety of FNBS (False Neil Belief System).
I have not seen the Greendale stage production yet. I
have no idea what my reaction will be. I would not
criticize a fellow Rustie who has been to the show and
found it aesthetically wanting. But I am more than
happy to drive nails through the hands and feet of the
drunken punkers who hate Greendale merely because it
is not Southern Man. These are two different
critiques of Neil, one delivered in the context of
Neil Knowledge and the other delivered by those who
believe in Whores With No Name.
