Despite my ongoing pessimism about this 'project' (see my last post at the
very end of Digest 4710) I actually do tend to agree with Steve from Kansas
when he says "I think something will happen sooner than later...."

I was listening to Sunset Cowboy for the first time in ages the other night
(you’re so right Jules) and it came to me with absolute clarity that one
day, in my lifetime, I will be sitting there with a DVD in my player
watching and listening to some of this vintage stuff with the fabulous
artwork all sprawled out open...

Then I watched the barn interview on the Harvest DVD-A and the JTTP VCD and
went up to bed both smiling at and cursing the man...

One day.

I am presently vining all ten discs + artwork over on Dylantree and I was
wondering if there is any interest here. Most folks have the complete set but
it would be a nice addition to any newbie's list. You only need a DVD ROM drive
and be able to handle Flac files (all ten discs and artwork on one DVD).
If interested or if you have any questions, contact off list.

And here are some more thoughts generated by my recent listening to Sunset
Cowboy for the first time in ages the other night (you're so right again
Jules)…..

Somewhere deep into the blistering guitar interplay on CITS, I got the
strong cold shivers up the spine and several things came into my mind all at
once:

1) The absolute clarity thing about the Archives one day (see previous
post…)

2) Don't crash the car Carl; I was driving at the time, yes I'd put it onto
a C90 cassette, no CD player in my car.

2) The recent posts on 4 Way Street
I always found the production of 4WS very thin, and realised that I much,
much, massively prefer the Neil/Danny guitar interplays on the Fillmore 70
tapes than I do the Neil/Stills duelling on 4WS's Southern Man. The former
sound like the wonderful chemistry of a musical piece evolving under
improvisation, the latter sounds like straightforward showmanship (the song
itself becomes kinda irrelevant).

3) I presume, without checking, that Danny never played Southern Man live
with Neil?
Were those March 70 Fillmore shows Danny’s last live performances with Neil
and the Horse?
Is Danny playing guitar on Southern Man on ATGR? I know it’s Nils on piano.
As I recall, the ATGR credits don't tell you who played what on each track?

.....oh s##t, I could've looked that last one up on the exhaustive
track-by-track discography of the Harverst DVD-A.

Curse the man and his many formats...

Carl S.

I think something important is being missed here.

If I recall, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere won some dubious award as the
worst sounding remixed cd of all time. I know personally the sound of the
opening licks on Down By The River and Cowgirl used to just send me like
nothing else, on LP - and that same feeling is not recalled on the cd
versions - so maybe there is wisdom in the man's pathology - maybe there's
magic in them there digibytes

Great, then I guess I don't have to fear a bigger Decade kind of thing. While
having about 30 tracks duplicated (those compiled for Decade) in my Neil
collection is no big deal, the very nature -and reported size- of the Archives
project makes me suspect the guy is expecting long-time fans to buy most of his
catalogue yet again (though they'd be getting 20% to 30% of 'new material' as a
reward). Funny how Neil doesn't seem to know the long-time fan already OWNS that
shit.

I can only hope the release of this single-CD greatest hits issue will disuade
him from including tons of the stuff we already have... which in some cases
would be duplicated now in their original albums, Decade, the Greatest Hits set
itself... and the Archives! But I'm not too optimistic. That's only 16 tracks he
used for the latest compilation. There's still piles of stuff to rip us off
with!

If you scratch 'long time fan' from the quoted statement, it does make sense,
though: aren't collectors those who will buy anything, regardless of what it is
and how many times -in slightly different package- they already own the thing?
But they like doing that. I don't. And I consider myself a fan, if not a
long-time one.

I really, really hope Neil reconsiders this because he'd make crap out of
something that could be absolutely mind-blowing. But judging from all the things
I've read he said about the project, the only aspect that has remained untouched
is his desire to mix familiar material with unreleased stuff.

Anyway, I hope it includes a bonus DVD with video footage of Neil himself
running with one of those bags with the "$" sign on them. At least it'll help me
laugh at myself.

Cheers,

Matias

I'm not too fussed about this, I think Brian sings it well enough.
What I miss is Carl's vocals - Carl always brought that certain
bittersweet fresh-as-a-mountain-stream yet oh-so-melancholic quality
to Brian's songs, always added another dimension. But I can't
quibble, because Smile '04 is so wonderfully done that I almost think
it's beyond criticism.

>It lives up to its billing, it lives up to the fantasy I had in my
>head when I started playing jigsaw puzzle with my bootlegs.

It absolutely leaves the fantasy I had dead in the water. For years
I heard some of these tracks as instrumentals, and I thought some of
it was just too scarey and too whacked. But when the top-line vocal
and melody is factored in, then it all makes sense and clicks into
place. They used to say that when Brian was making records that he'd
ask people to record parts that they thought were crazy, but they'd
do them anyway. When they heard the playback they were always
stunned to find that the part worked. Brian had known it would work
because he could hear it all in his head all the time. I was hearing
an incomplete version all these years and some of it didn't make
sense to me simply because it wasn't finished.

I really envy anyone hearing these songs for the first time. In a
way I wish I hadn't obsessed over the bootlegs for so many years -
because anyone hearing this stuff fresh is surely going to have a
pretty religious experience.

For sure. Though the main 'difference' to me from the bootleg stuff
is the same as the live shows - the hair-raising feeling that this is
a BAND playing this stuff. Not only that, a great band too. That fact
alone turns the music into one cohesive piece. RUN to the store and

Its October and time to finalize plans for
IRF/BSB...below is a repost of the OPL Jam
announcement from Couzin' Tim Jones.

Hello, Chuck.
This is the email address for any interested jam
participants to submit any questions / comments
regarding our upcoming event.

opljam04@...

'Brother Bob', entertainment coordinator for OPL,
has requested that we keep this on the down low, no
publicity. I advised him that there would be no other
announcements beside the website or list
announcement(s). Not much of a change from last year,
other than a few posters were tacked up at the landing
then, but not this year. They are concerned about
folks perceiving this a a Neil stealth thing, I
ASSUME.

As far as the crew itinerary for the day (Oct 21st, of
course), we will be arriving @ OPL in the early
afternoon for some relaxing. Load in will be at 5PM,
sound checks and a practice set will be at 'round 7PM.

I suggest sign ups to occur as folks arrive. At 9PM
the jam will begin. Set lengths will depend on the
number of sign ups. The soundboard will be placed near
the large screen, approx 15 ft. from stage front so I
can get this one recorded on my HD for 'posterity'.
I'll close by mentioning that the new entertainment
man, Bro Bob, is showing as much encouragement and
enthusiasm as any one preceding him. Rusties should be
proud of the reputation this event has brought forth
during the celebration.

This oughta be fun, Chuck!!

Talk later,
tj

Mmmm. Now that you mention it, I see it too...

Maybe the reason that Rog has never let us see the film of the Wall concerts
is his embarrasment over that moment when he dons a cloak and removes Rick
Wright's head with a light sabre?
Or was that bit dropped after the rehearsals?

I agree that Rog has been getting a 'bit of a shaft' around here lately.
But to be fair to the 'shafters', much as I like some of Rog's solo work a
great deal more than I can be bothered to care for the "Mr.Gilmour and
friends band" output post RW, I do think Rog has somewhat disappeared 'up
himself' of late. The Amused to Death album was spectacularly well
executed, but it's really rather tedious to get through, don't you think...?
Give me Obscured by Clouds or side 1 of Meddle anyday...

No, I don't believe Scott ever worked at WPLJ. He was at WABC in NY
in the early '60's and moved to WNEW-FM in '67 or so. He was at WNEW
up until that station hit the shitter a few years back. Most
recently he was at WAXQ (104.3).

Some choice Muni airchecks can be heard here:

Included are some fun Beatles and solo John Lennon snippets and a
short piece of a nice Grateful Dead interview (Scott & the boys
playing poker during the on-air interview). The famous 'Dog Day

Brian WIlson and his very large band did a top flight job with "Heroes &

Go and do a google search on Beach Boys Smile and learn a little
about its tortured history. It's the most famous (previously)

Morning all,
Posted on this subject awhile ago, but will re-hash it
here.
EKTIN was never "re-mixed" for cd release. The original cd transfer,
I would assume was taken from the master tapes by the record company.
Here's the story, the reason a lot of the early-mid 80's cd releases
sound so thin and trebly, was due to how they were pressed as vinyl
records. The original acetates used to press out the mass produced
albums, needed to be mixed a little higher since some of the high end
was lost in the pressing of the vinyl.
When cd came along, the record companies, instead of doing the more
expensive (but right thing)just dug the tapes out, and went straight
to cd with them, instead of re-mixing them, thus the thin, tinny
sound.
That's why now the rage among "catalog" artists (that does not
include you Ms. Love) is to re-mix these tapes, and re-release them
as "re-mastered" with a much fuller, warmer sound.
Of course, this sometimes leads to other issues, Ozzy stripped the
drums/bass off the original mix of his 1st solo album, because of a
royalty dispute with the original musicians.
Anyhow, as someone earlier posted, with Neil's greatest hits being
put out, its not a "this sucks I've already got all this material a
couple of times over" its going to be the sonic quality of the album
tracks from EKTIN, and ATG, that should be the big draw.
Of course the bonus DVD, with video of the original vinyl playing
while the "special mix" is being heard, will only add to the legend
of Neil being an eccentric mf'er.
Later skaters,

Alright,
For those who have not lost complete interest in Neil's
fidelity delivery problems or never understood them to begin with,
here's a primer. Anyone that can add feel free......

-"176" is what Neil has decided on dvd-a, these can be found on
Harvest, and the recently released "Missing 4" dvd-a. You can only
access this mix with a dvd-a player. I have not heard a "176" mix.

- "96" is also consided DTS which provided theater quality sound,
Harvest contains a DTS sound track (as well as a "176" mix), this mix
is accessible with a dvd player, and/or, a receiver that can decode
DTS. I have heard the "96" mix of Harvest, and it sounds remarkably
better than the original cd release. A lot more depth, and clarity,
imo, a pretty signifigant leap in sound quality, and what cd should
have been in the first place.

- "48" this is the new standard cd mix. This is what you got if you
bought any of the "re-mastered Missing 4" cds. This can be played on
any existing cd player. And yes, the sound quality beats any older
Neil cd release, hands down.

Now to finish up, anyone actually heard any of the dvd-a "176" mixes
(especially On the Beach) I'd really love to read what your
impression was. I know there was a review of it online, and the
reviewer actually stated that you would probably have to trade in the
recent "re-mastered" version, and get the "176" mix to hear OTB in
all its glory.....
Confused yet? well let me tell you about blu-ray dvd technology....
OOOOFA,

....I feel sorry for Brian Wilson, it seems to me that he's been taken advantage
of, subtly or deliberately, by hanger ons and other Beach boys, thru the years.
He's the only brother alive, kind of sad. Medicine has evolved to where his
mental problems seem to be treated better. It's rare to go back to a previous
work, especially for an older, troubled composer, and make it work, or add to it
positively but, from all I've read, he has succeeded and I wish him well.
Re: Neil....he has always had the rep of zagging thru projects and musicians,
maybe a little cold hearted, at least he didn't fall into the entourage and
blowing his money thing or just turning out product, like Brian.
