This, my friends, could be interesting.
Conan needs ratings.
Neil et al - would like Prairie-Wind sales...

The larger TV showcase of course is Leno, which Sampedro has
connections with.....yet Neil's gonna' show up on Conan 4 times this
week? Lettermans' had the 'hipper' band for 20 years
now..........snubbed?

What's he gonna do?

I predict 6 songs in the 4 days...........

"In the year 2000"...........

a pump organ version of When God Made Me-w/-EmmyLou

a "big band" version of The Last Time I saw Elvis

a Crazy Horse version of "Cortez" which runs overtime into "Dr.
Phil"s time............Dr. Phil comes onstage and replaces Ralph on
drums........Oprah comes onstage and grabs Miracas..........

Somewhere in America.....a lady with blue hair screems!

On Thursday, Conan introduces Neil.....out walks Zeke
Young.......bumps up to a mic and says "If you follow every dream
you might get lost"

The cast of "Lost" enters the stage, dressed in Gospel
Robes.....with those 'numbers' etched at the seams.

They join Neil as he begins singing "Only Love can break your Heart".

By Friday, all of America will be drooling for what next 'whacky-
moment' this Conan-Young fusion will trimulpantly end with.

Neil comes out, sits in the chair........talks about organic
gardening and bio-diesel..........Rush Limbaugh enters from stage
left, calls Neil a leftist-pinko-liberal........Neil grins, doesn't
say a word.

Now we dolly back............
Now we fade to black.........

This is my first post here so I suppose I should tell you a little
about myself. Well, I'm 16 years old and from Sweden. I discoverad The
true greatness of Neil Young 1˝ year ago when a friend of mine thought
a shold have a listen to that old guy. Now, after listening to the
studio albums many many times I've been starting to collecting
bootlegs. Therefore I got some questions to you. How reliable is the
sugarmountain setlist archive? For example does the bootleg "speakin
out" (1973-11-3)contain Cowgirl in the sand as the 14th track? Or is
it just 13 tracks like my version of the show (very importent
questions to me :) )?
     I've got a version of 1973-3-11 that's 20 tracks. But the
s.g.archive says they only played 15 tracks that night (sounds
reasonable with Are you ready... as a closer). So where are the other
five tracks from (on the way home, here we are in the years, after the
goldrush, out on the weekend and Harvest)?
Last question, which year are the bootleg "Forever singing" from?
I've searched for all these questions on the net but I just can't seem
to find anything. Please help me or tell me if I'm just being annoying.

Johan, Sweden
PS. sorry for my english.

However, I think as long as you're in the first 20
rows that you'll do just fine.>>

If what one is journeying toward, in a temporal sense,
is merely the greatest concert-going experience
available in the history of civilization, what you are
saying is 100% true. However, as Sister Toni was
testifying, it is possible to go beyond these earthly
limitations and quite literally emerge through the
wall into a subsequent and higher
spiritual/emotional/universe-energy Sphere.

The one time I was front-dead-center, leaning over the
front of the stage with my fingertips extending toward
the face of Old Black, there were moments when Neil
lunged forward and there was no more than a foot
between the ends of my fingers and his fingers on the
strings...Neil Young does not play Old Black, but the
other way around, as we all Know, and I later
testified:

"I reached out towards Old Black each time Neil lunged
at me with it, and I made all kindsa magical
fluttering motions with my fingers as he assaulted
that old weapon... There was a moment near the end
when the music was completely taking over--one of
those magical moments when Neil Young does not appear
to be in charge anymore--as though this song were a
mighty windstorm, and it was blowing Neil around the
stage, as though some power were shaking out from Old
Black, and shaking Neil, and shaking the air, and then
I felt my outstretched fingers being moved
independently in the air by this power!...It was one
of the most amazing experiences I have ever had at a
concert. I fully now know that Neil has tapped into
Unseen Powers because I FELT THEM. They are real and
Neil has the power to conduct into them."

Many music afficionados, including all professional
music critics whom I've ever read, fallaciously
believe that Neil Young is an entertainer, or a pop
star, or a rock legend, or a musician or a singer or
some such nonsense. Some even maintain that He is a
mortal man. However, those of us who have been there
at the Front Row Front Portal to the Further Infinity
have recognized that the Entity known as "Neil" is
nothing more or less than The Godhead Materialized
Before Our Sacred Startled Vision.

True, Neil is quite impressive, in an earthly way,
from the 20th row. Neil is also very impressive
off-stage, when he is a few feet from the viewer,
walking to or from his bus, walking across a hotel
lobby, etc. He is extremely tall, and yet seems even
taller in person. His head is enormous, looking more
than genius-sized, and certainly larger than a
human/mortal head would look. This effect is enhanced
by His massive and holy bald spot, from which long
straight hair cascades like sacred strings of fungus
growing from a Godly Melon.

Neil's physical Impressiveness, however, while quite
capable of causing Rusties and other mortals to stop
in their tracks and be unable to breathe, does nothing
to prepare a person for standing two feet in front of
Neil as He transforms into Godhead and becomes Lord of
All Universes as He channels Eternal Space/Time/Love
through what is conventionally regarded as a, oh I
dunno, it doesn't matter, a black-painted 1953 Gibson
Les Paul or whatever It is, as It is actually akin to
the Israelite Ark of the Covenant (Arc!), a
transmitting device that turns Neil into God as It
relays the reality of reality until there is no other
Reality.

These are very real metaphysical issues, and not to be
trifled with in a Ticketmaster Golden Circle Auction.

Yes, 20th Row is nice. It is very pleasant from a
sensory/hedonistic perspective. But Sacred Front Row
Center is not located in the venue. It is on the
Other Side of the Door. The side that is occupied by
Godhead/Neil, Creator and Destroyer.

Datta. Dayadhvam. Damyata. Shantih. Shantih.
Shantih.

I'm not interested in seeing a concert. I'm
interested in Neil pulling me through the Universal
Membrane so that I can dwell on the Other Side with
Him.

<applause>

Despite the (possible) hyperbole, this really isn't too far from the
truth of how I feel about attending shows by my favourite artists.
I too want to be pulled through that curtain. I've always had a
mistrust of anyone who thought music was about 'entertainment' - for
me it's much more spiritual than that. I think of 'entertainment'
as being glitsy, safe, shallow opium for the masses. The music of
Neil Young, The Waterboys, The Who (and whoever else I'm in musical
love with on any given day) is food for my soul!

Amen, brother Bob.

Hi, Johan, and welcome to the list!

As I recall, Speakin' Out *does* contain CITS as the 14th track. I
know the other popular boot of this gig (Rock'n'Roll Will Never Die)
doesn't include Cowgirl.

Sugar Mountain has the Manchester gig as *14* tracks ending with
Cowgirl, which is correct. I was there. But I missed the last couple
of songs...

Well, I beg to differ. Granted you are correct that being closer to a

seeing neil from the FOURTH row was definitely a different experience.

i was doing it.

it was NOTHING like seeing neil from the 104th row. nothing at all.

see my post from two years ago about watching greendale the first time

LOW is Geffen's record he picked the producer and the players and Neil let
the producer do it his way. Neil was quoted in interviews he did not like
the record and felt it was not his. Geffen promoted the record like no
other, TTN was played on rock stations once an hour for a week it was number
one on the billboard rock charts for 3 weeks. Neil said he did not even know
some of the players but if you like drums there on LOW.

I hear ya, sweet Toni. I had the extreme privilege of
being front row center for 3 songs during the opener for
the Friends And Relatives tour in Virginia Beach on
8-8-2000, thanks to a generous friend who traded
temporarily for my 7th row seat and let me sit next to her
husband for a bit. The difference between the 7th row and
the front row transcends description. It was not 7 times
better; it was more like 7 to the 7th power better. It was
like there was no audience; Neil was performing for me and
I was part of the music.

I very luckily pulled from TM a front row seat for the
2-29-2004 Greendale show. Never have I had such an intense
and visceral concert experience. Hunks of wood from
Ralph's drum sticks flying, sweat everywhere, Neil's
intense expressions, the stage actors, and no audience but
me. I was literally in Greendale that evening. Nothing in
my concert life (I've seen over 50 Neil shows) compares
with that front row experience.

Congratulations my friend and now our current esteemed ROTM, Kathy Bliss,
one of a great triumvirate of Rusted Kathys (all of whom, btw, have been
crowned ROTM! And one of whom, took the crown off of MY head, but hey,
that's a whole other story. I'm over it. Really. I am. ... sniff)

I have had the wonderful opportunity to get to know Kathy Bliss better this
past month as we stalked ... ooops ... sorry .... attended a couple of very
memorable Steve Earle events together, and then of course IRF.

Kathy works very hard for IRF, but at every uttered "thank you" or
"congratulations" was quick to point out that it is Chuck the Fireman who
does so much of the behind-the-scenes work at IRF (thanks Chuck!). Kathy is
reluctant to accept kudos and credit for what she does naturally.

Kathy is one of those folks who makes Rust a great place. She is warm, she

Kathy Bliss is it. She's the real thing.

Where to start with no time... let's ramble... out of my office til
Friday due to water damage, so grabbing any office I can... crazy...
Kevin Chong's book signing was a joy, many rusties present, lots of
fun... finished the book on the plane ride home, and thoroughly enjoyed
it... its like talking to a friend, many shared experiences, etc., I
really felt like I could have written the book... yet, once I reflected
on the reader friendly aspects and accessibility of the book, I also
realized it is very skillfully written, and alas, I could not have
written it (even with my skillful self delusion ability - I am only a
few weeks away from having vivid memories of this years game 5 that I
attended!!! - will let you baseball fans know what happened as soon as
the memories set themselves in concrete!!)... but it's ok that I
couldn't have written it, as vicariously (and sometimes actually) living
it is just as good... highly recommended... Jim, I hope someday I get to
ride in that VW microbus of yours :-)... IRF, what everyone says is
true, seeing old friends, making a few new ones each year, is by far the
highlight of the weekend, even better than the concert itself many
years... the talent of everyone that steps up to the microphones Friday
night is thrilling to see... I snuck out about 11:30 or so, and wish I
could have stayed, but travel, etc, were catching up with me... someday
those Seattle area rusties will have to teach me how to stay up late
into the morning... the niece tells me Widespread Panic did Vampire
Blues on Halloween night in Vegas (I guess due to non-use I was bounced
from the rust group by Yahoo temporarily, so my apologies if this has
been stated a few dozen times)... they also covered Cortez last year on
Halloween, so the niece is theorizing covering Neil on Halloween is now
a WP tradition... and finally, looked for other rusties at the Chet
Helms concert, but didn't see any, altho I know a few talked of going...
what a thrill for me... having read so much of the history, to walk into
the park, find the concert, see Blue Cheer (probably only one original
member, I don't know, but wasn't letting any details ruin my time),
Country Joe (only one song, that's when I walked in), Kantner and
friends, Dino Valenti and Quicksilver Gold, and others was quite a
thrill for me... deeply disappointed I was too late to see the
Charlatans... but still, a great vibe for me... and met members of The
Rock Poster Society (or TRPS, or trips), so that was fun for me (I
think even they realize how stupid I am to give them $25 every year when
I cant attend a single function - but I get a cool shirt out of it!!)...
the anti Bush vibe was thick too, as the vendors had hysterical buttons,
bumper stickers, etc... I think even a Bush supporter would have enjoyed
it on some level, maybe not... and so cool to have great food options as
a vegetarian at a concert (and everywhere in SF)... anyway, cant say
enough about the free concert, very enjoyable... wore my More Barn
shirt, and some people enjoyed that much... oh, and the hippie behind me
who said to the guy by him "Yeah man, saw the bridge concert yesterday -
Neil Young was there.... And some other people... Neil Young was
there... he headlined it... and some other people... it was in Berkeley"
other guy: and its today too right?... hippie: "no, man, it was
yesterday in Berkeley, its in Berkeley every year... Neil Young was
there... and some other people" - this was repeated quite a few times,
with the coolest pause each time before "and some other people"...
anyway, I got involved in the conversation later... the hippie concluded
he saw someone else at Berkeley, sounded like it was a long time ago
tho... too funny, but we all 3 had a great conversation and a great
time... ok, that's enough (or I guess too much!!) for now... Lou, more
to the picture...

Subject: "Elroy's show" free offer: Bonnaroo 2003 Neil Young DVD
KMcVeigh05@...

To honor the memory of the recently deceased Elroy, I'm offering 10
free copies of the Bonnaroo 2003 DVD of Neil's performance with Crazy Horse.
(See a photo of Elroy at
http://home.comcast.net/~kmcveigh05/music.html . He's on the right.)
This originally was a dual-layer disc (half of the second layer was
empty), and it's been converted to a regular, single-layer Fuji Taiyo-Yuden
DVD+R disc. I can see no drop in quality. My experience has been that
dual-layer DVDs are overpriced and temperamental. The music is from an
excellent soundboard source, and most of the video was shot from the giant
screen at the concert, so it's pretty close to a pro-shot DVD. In other
words, it's really good.
I'll send them out to the first four real-timers and the first six
digesters. Important: If you're a digester, put the digest number of this
message in the subject line. I'll reply only to the winners. If you don't
hear back from me, you didn't make it in time. No extra trade deals at this
time.
If you have a DVD burner and can offer this back to the Rust List,
that would be great. If not, just enjoy it.
I'm very sad to see Elroy go, but I feel lucky to have spent 13 years
and three months with this incredible guy.

Congratulations my friend and now our current esteemed ROTM, Kathy
Bliss, one of a great triumvirate of Rusted Kathys (all of whom, btw,
have been crowned ROTM! And one of whom, took the crown off of MY
head, but hey, that's a whole other story. I'm over it. Really. I
am. ... sniff) <snip>
Kathy is reluctant to accept kudos and credit for what she does
naturally.
Kathy is one of those folks who makes Rust a great place. She is
warm, she is kind, she worships at the alter of Neil, she is real.
Forget about Coke, Kathy Bliss is it. She's the real thing.

Even though I'm in the Pepsi Generation, I'll echo Karen's remarks.
Congratulations, Kathy! We know you're a great, deserving ROTM.

Dino passed away in 1994. Believe you probably saw Dino's son, whose name I
believe is Joli. I envy you seeing all those great musicians, even if there was
only one original Blue Cheer member in that lineup! Glad you had such a
memorable weekend, thanks for a great post!!!

Best regards,

I used to have a bookmark to a site telling the postage costs for mailing
specific numbers of CDRs. I guess it was on my old computer, because I can't
find it now. Does anyone have the link?

SSIA. I'll still take six digesters, although as I write this the digest
hasn't moved yet. Be sure to put the digest number in the subject line.
