http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSjoXy5V4kE  There's a comment from
"fuzzypige222" who is clearly not a fan. That's fine, but due to their tone, I
do plan to let them know how wrong they are. If anyone wants to join me, feel
free!

The single minded aspects seem to have caused Neil's friends a few problems...

I guess Neil thinks it pays to be strong.

He was bullied and had a tough time in his younger days...so it is maybe his
coping strategy (?)

Another rust trait....love hate relationship with politics?

And concern for Mother Earth.

Some sense of religion...in the broadest sense?

Bands used to work on 6 months on one song that is why they call them recording
artists. Bands like the Dan took years to make a record, they felt they owed-it
to the fans. In the seventys baby boomers started to make money, they bought
expensive hardware which meant they had disposable income to buy software for
their home and car that is why Framton and Boston sold 15 million records and
Pepper did not. No one had hardware when the Beatles came just dads hi-fi.

Even back then I thought the way records were being made in the 60's was

Hi all

David James and Inside Out are playing the legendary Ace Cafe in North London on
Saturday 21 May.

Those of you that came to the NYAS Convention last September will remember just
how good David and the band are.

For those of you that don't know:

The venue:

And for any petrol heads - there will be some very cool cars there too!

Be good to see some of you there.

Several points to make here:-

1) Very few bands ever spent 6 months on a track.

2) It's actually far more likely that a modern artist spends that long on a
track. Bands of the 60s could make an album in a couple of days. Bands of the
70s would usually spend 6 months on a whole album.

3) The longer a band spend on a track then the more likely that they lose the
spirit of the thing and overcook it. See recent REM records for proof.

4) The Dan were more obsessional than most bands and so were actually an
exception.

5) I actually doubt that they spent that long on a track to please their fans.
They did it because they were perfectionist nerds!

Fagan certainly was a perfecionist with Steely Dan - I recall reading that he
could pick out any musician's mistake in the studio even where they would think
they had played a piece very well. The recorded evidence when played back proved
Fagan correct.

But yes perfectionist nerds, but what great records they produced as such.

Good article in The Guuardian in the UK on The Monkees rise and fall with
particular reference to their cult movie 'Head' - and stuff such as the
following:

-- 'Hurt by (accurate) claims that they didn't play on their own records, the
band practised hard and went out on tour. Led by Nesmith, who told Dolenz the
process was like Pinocchio becoming a real little boy, they seized creative
control with their third album, Headquarters, and became bona fide rock stars.
They hung out with the Beatles and toured with Jimi Hendrix as support. During
one visit to Tork's Laurel Canyon mansion, singer Jackson Browne later recalled:
"Jimi Hendrix was up there jamming with Buddy Miles in the pool house, and
Peter's girlfriend was playing the drums, naked."

The Dan expected perfection and genius...to match their own ;-)

I'm sure many egos were bruised recording those albums. Elliot Randall seems
pretty philosophical about it. He recorded the great solo for Reelin in the
years without practice, to make it sound fresh. They used the 2nd take but he
prefers the 1st.

Seems a nice guy who lives mainly on London with a recording studio.

There is an easy option to join in, using a website. Scroll down to read
more. Better choice is using an IRC client (a chat program), available
for any platform for free - we're on EFNet, the channel ist #rusties

The chat starts Sunday 9 pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific/3 am CET (yes, that's
Monday morning in Central Europe). There'a also a more European
concentrated chat 5 hours earlier (10 pm Central European Time) in the
same room.

Further information about the rustie chat can be found here:
http://www.hyperrust.org/Rust/Chat.html

A more detailed description with pictures on how to install an IRC
client and join the chat with a Windows based system can be found here,
it should still work this way even if the newer version of mIRC looks a
little different:
http://www.thesongdog.de/rust/help/mirc.php

And now the easiest "newbie" option:
- go to http://www.efnet.org/
- chose a nickname on the left
- change "#webchat" into "#rusties"
- click the Login button
... and you should be connected with a web based interface :-)

See ya there!

Anyone using Vuze for their bit torrent client? I switched from uTorrent because
the latest version kept crashing my system. However, since I switched it seems
like uploading (once I become a seeder) is almost non-existent. My share rating
is suffering greatly even though I've been leaving torrents open for days at a
time. If I get a share ratio of .250 on a torrent, I'm doing well. Even when I
jump on a torrent right when it's posted it doesn't work well. It says it sets
everything up automatically and I can't quite figure out how to change things.
I'm not sure if it's the settings or my ISP (Comcast). If anyone is familiar
with Vuze and knows how I can adjust things, I'd appreciate some help. Off list
replies would be quite welcome.

Thanks,
Matt

"Some sense of religion...in the broadest sense?

Um Nick ! I had to think about that. I'm not religious. I think it's the cause
of all, world unrest more so than oil or money.

But then again my sister and brother in law are christian missionaries. I admire
their work. But I read Rust and listen to Neil more than they read the bible and
go to church!

So I guess in the very broadest sense perhaps but I think it's addiction.

Perhaps spirituality in some sense? Instead of 'religion'- which connotates some
sort of fixed belief, I think-

And addiction, either with or without the 'religion' part (I thought maybe you
meant that addiction can be in many forms-drugs, religion, music-) is a
definite- rusties all seem to 'get' the enjoyment/obsession factor in some way--
