You're just more than welcome, Lady Ma'am -- I've always been a considerable
oddity (oh, a GOOD thing) and sometimes I appear to be a dinosaur, but my
feeling of community is not out of date or "old-fashioned;" it's just that so
many people are involved in entertainment today there are quite a few
"communities." I AM old-fashioned, perhaps, in that I still think of us ALL as
one community. Sure, I've been known to tick traditionalists off by embracing
the new breed and I often tick off the newcomers (Hugh X. Lewis calls 'em "the
carpetbaggers") when I defend the traditionalists, but, hey, I'm older than many
in both "camps" and have no plans to go anywhere anytime soon. I have never
been on a corporate payroll in the music business (my magazine work was all
free-lance and self-employed contract work), so my only loyalties are to the
music and the good folks who are doing whatever they do the best they can. BTW,
I know one guy who STILL dislikes a positive review I gave the Pointer Sisters.
Hey, it was a great show -- what should I have done, criticize 'em 'cause they
didn't have any Kitty Wells or Loretta Lynn songs? I don't think so.
That brings up an important point that relates to where Linda and I are at
this particular point (my first CD is just out and she's a work in progress):
We are all complicated people with various facets to our personalities, but
performers need to find the DOMINANT "me" and develop it, as I saw just today on
the Just Plain Folks list, to where we are always the most interesting person in
the room when we're on stage. How we go about achieving that is a combination
of appearance, demeanor, music, attitude ... everything. I never had really
thought about that specific reference, but we do often say of the great acts,
"You know when they walk in the room." Good stuff to grow on.
There's always a chair with your name on it at Uncle Willam's Place
