Hello, All; the new email address is not quite configured to my Outlook Express
system, but the new website is up and the April edition of thebridgeworks, our
newsletter, is accessible from both sites (the old site is slated to
self-destruct on or about April 20).
http://www.unclewillamsplace.com
Would love to have you visit -- everything is in place except the Art Page,
which will take a few more days; you can still get to it from the old site. If
you know someone who would like to be on our mostly-monthly list, let me know;
if you would rather not be on it, let me know. If you'd like to see the hard
paper edition of thebridgeworks, let me know -- it includes bonus reprint
material from my vast files; a thousand bylines in PERFORMANCE Magazine alone,
plus an estimated that many more accumulatively in other publications. It's
interesting to look back over those articles and columns and see what has
changed and what has not changed -- my first freelance assignments through Tandy
Rice were in April of 1966. From that point until November of 1994, I had
something in SOME publication at least monthly, including nineteen years and
seven months of weekly dispatches for PERFORMANCE.

Wow, it's been a hassle, actually since before Christmas, but we're well on the
way to Happy Days In Cyberspace; stay tuned. Meanwhile, the new issue is up on
the website. http://members.ispwest.com/billlittleton/
We get a lot of addresses for folks we don't know, so if you don't want to be on
our list, let us know. If all goes any vestige close to well, April will be
closer to being on time. More soon, Bill

Rustie Blue and her current single "Cloud Of Dust" debuts on R&R!
Rustie Blue has debuted on the R&R Chart! "Cloud of Dust" made its
first appearance at #64. "Cloud of Dust" was recently "picked" on
After Midnight With Blair Garner's Pick It or Flick It! Rustie also
debuts on the E.C.M.A. chart with Cloud Of Dust at #94 and currently
is #38 on the CHi hotdisc Chart!
http://www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/Charts.asp?
format=c1R&showtopn=500
"Cloud of Dust" is Rustie Blue's current single. Rustie
describes "Cloud of Dust" as being "reminiscent of a Johnny Cash
tune". The song was written by Tom Damphier and Judy Rodman, who
says that Rustie is "a singer who delivers with passion!" "Cloud of
Dust" can also be found on M-T-M #13 track 4, and Chi Hotdisc #82.
With music influences like Patsy Cline and Elvis, it's obvious why
Rustie Blue crosses so many barriers. No matter what Rustie sings,
her true blue country vocals are very much apparent! Her energetic
stage performance and charismatic personality makes Blue a
refreshing experience and somebody you won't forget!

You're welcome, Bobby; we were short on space this issue because of all the
response to the "characters" issue, but that's a good problem to have; it would
have been hard to do individual reviews of everybody at the MTM event, but I
wish I could have gotten a little more into detail. What a busy day that was!!!
Pretty much normal back in my PERFORMANCE Magazine days, but that's been a dozen

I resend, I won't include the Fan Forum. Folks can go to the link below or

What I REALLY Miss
About Country Music
by Bill Littleton
For those of us who grew up outside of Nashville, our greatest connectors to
country music, in addition to the music itself, were the regional performers
and, up in the '50s and on, local disc jockeys, who mostly worked at block
format stations. Most of these DJs were colorful characters -- we had Sheriff Ed
in Greenwood and Bashful Henry across the river; down state a bit was Uncle
Ugly; ole Claude Casey was down at Augusta, as was Peanut Faircloth for a while,
then up to Chattanooga. And those of us who hung around radio stations got to
meet record and publishing promo guys -- seriously, I knew who Curley Rhodes was
before I knew the name of his boss, Jim Denny. Of course, I knew their company,
Cedarwood -- hey, I read the credits in COUNTRY SONG ROUNDUP!
During our first year in Nashville, John Bailey and I stopped at Krispy Kreme on
the way home from a gig at the El Patio Club in Hickman County. "You know what I
love about Nashville?" he asked and immediately answered, "Everybody is a cat
unto himself."
Ah the characters. The people who built on little opportunities till they could
handle bigger opportunities, some even bigger and some seemingly stuck in some
sort of mystical limbo. But they were all part of the chemistry that had turned
Nashville into a veritable boomtown.
Jeanne Naujek recently did an interview with Buddy Killen for the TENNESSEAN
wherein he noted that he did all the stuff he did "because I didn't know I
couldn't do it." Not meaning to detract from Buddy, but that was the mindset of
the entire music community at the time of my arrival. We collectively didn't
know there was anything we couldn't do -- what the public would ultimately pay
for was anybody's guess, but a mantra of the day was "Hell, I don't know --
let's try it."
The term "character" often suggests eccentricity or humor -- yeah, we had Scoopy
Bruce Harper, Charlie Lamb, Captain Midnight, Ronnie Self, Billy Large, Cousin
Jody, and my pal, Vic McAlpin; you don't even have to know them for their names
to make you grin.
And some you probably do know: Grandpa Jones, Mel Tillis, Wayne "Fluffo" Walker,
Minnie Pearl, Ronni Stoneman, Harold Morrison, Harlan Howard, John Hartford, Mac
Wiseman ... John Denny, himself quite a low key character, tells me that a
recent Mac Wiseman birthday party turned into a Mel Tillis Story Fest --
"Everybody there had a Mel Tillis story."
Indeed, there are thousands of stories about hundreds of the veritable
characters who took their own shots at what they didn't know they couldn't do --
some won most of the time, some won ever so often, and some of us were just
danged happy to be here and see it all happen.
Uniqueness is fundamental to the human condition, right down to fingerprints and
DNA, yet a function of society seems to be homogenization. Country music as the
commercial entity it is emerged from a society of individuals, of stylists, of
characters, if you will. There were no hyphenated sub-genres when I was a kid
because being a hillbilly was being a hillbilly, which meant that Roy Acuff did
his thing and Eddy Arnold did his, while the areas between seethed with stylists
just as unique. As Tom Parker oozed from the carney world to country music, his
ethics and overall demeanor may have been questioned, but never his eccentricity
-- THAT was pretty commonplace.
And I really miss the characters ... Ben Smathers, T. Tommy Cutrer, Smiley
Wilson, Shel Silverstein, Doodle Owens ... ah, so many, both behind the
spotlight and in front of it. John Denny and I identified a group we call "low
key characters" -- Don Light, Marijohn Wilkin, Jeannie Seely, Bobby Bare, Cowboy
Jack Clement, Fred Foster, Tex Davis, all of whom are still with us, as are the
lingering effects of their uniqueness, their perceptions of their personal
gifts, their willingness to tackle what they didn't know. And their humor. The
humor brought us through the hard parts and provided beacons for others to
follow.
Here's the scary part, on the heels of the death of maybe the greatest character
of 'em all, Jimmy Martin: the conversation on this topic with John Denny came up
with ONE veritable latter day disciple of the old school of individualists --
Marty Stuart. Oh, there are a few characters around who do what they do, but
Marty is so good in so many areas that finding a slot for him is hard, which
generates problems in the corporate syndrome. He's done the big label thing and
now has his own operation underway. Charlie Daniels has gone that same route,
but Charlie is closer to our Old Geezers generation. Well, Marty came up through
the ranks with Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash, both of whom helped invent country
music stylism, so maybe he's part of "us," too.
Which means that the current slate of surviving characters are IT, when they're
gone, the only way you'll tell country music from rock or rap is, to borrow from
John Rich, when they tell us it's country. I don't find that prospect very
inviting. In all honesty, I don't expect such a scenario, because I have bigger
faith than that in the music, even though society is slanted against us. Some
young Moses will come along and lead us out of yet another wilderness;
meanwhile, Marty, we're behind you.v

There's nothing unusual about me running slow, so we'll just say that the May
issue of thebridgeworks is up on my website as per below. There is a news item
about a new message board Lonnie Ratliff and Gary Bradshaw have; we invite
sending an email to me to get the link, but the link stays live in email, so you
can just click on it right here:

Another update is that Mail Train bass player John Bailey is in Summit Medical
Center with a cardiac problem -- an arteriogram on Monday should clear up the
mystery, but prayers don't worry about mysteries. Jimmy Martin is also at
Summit, also in need of your prayers.
Hope you enjoy the new issue; if you don't know how you got on this list, I
probably don't either, but will gladly remove you on request. Keep them cards
and letters (aka email these days) coming in!!! Bill
