I had the pleasure of seeing Richard and his band play
two very different venues this past Friday - what a
great day!
They started out at noon on our local AAA-format radio
station, WFPK. It was much earlier than they're used
to playing, but they rocked the studio as if it were
12 hours later! They played for an hour, with a short
break for a little question and answer period, and the
audience loved every minute of it! It was also
broadcast live on the radio as well as the internet so
I'm sure a lot of other people who weren't lucky
enough to be there in person got to enjoy it. I was
especially thrilled to hear a live version of "Local
Paper" with Kurt using the rim of his drums to make
the typewriter sounds that we hear on the CD - it was
absolutely fabulous! They played a little bit from
each album and ended with covers from the Who and the
Kinks.
Then several hours later they were at my husband's and
my house for the house concert. This was a more
stripped-down version of the band - Kurt had a smaller
hand-held drum (instead of the full kit that he'd
played at the radio station) and many different
percussion instruments, Nancy played her bass and
Richard switched between a couple different guitars
and his keyboard. They sat in our living room and
played for more than 2 hours to the crowd of about 40
people and everyone loved it! It was different from
their set earlier in the day, but their voices made up
for them not being plugged in - the harmonies were
just incredible! Again, they played from all of
Richard's albums and stuck in several fun covers too.
At one point Kurt passed around the different
percussion instruments and the audience played along
with the band - it was a blast!
By the time the band stopped playing at 11pm, I'm sure
they were exhausted by their long day but they didn't
act like it. I know everyone at the house and the
radio station has a new appreciation for Richard and
the band and can't wait for them to come back to
Louisville! I was very tempted to follow them for the
rest of the weekend, but that ended up not to be
possible. If anyone saw them in Cincinnati or Chicago
(or will be seeing them in Cleveland tonight), I'd
love to hear about those shows.
As JB said a couple weeks ago, I would highly
recommend having a house concert with Richard and the
band - it's an amazing experience! And if there's ever
one close to you, be sure to attend!

P.S. During both Louisville shows there was a crew
from the PBS show "Right on the Money" filming
Richard, plus they did an interview with Richard and
Nancy before the house concert. So in the next month
or two, be watching your PBS station schedules for
this show and the story on Richard!
