Richard X,<br>Don, John, Ron, and Rico plus Neal
and a few others say hi. Your name and a few songs
keep coming up. Email me. You haven't seen me since
the studio work in Orange NJ. I've added Tibetan
Temple Bowls to the musical mix. Better than a
synthesizer.<br>Thank you <br>Neal

I forget.... I believe it is slated for late
summer, early fall; I could definitely be wrong though. I
have, however, had the infinite pleasure of visiting
with the Heymans last month and hearing a couple of
tracks from it -- excellent, excellent stuff! Sounds
like yet another winner!!! (but who can be surprised
about that?)<br><br>ross

JANUARY 21 @ THE BOTTOM LINE<br>THE BEAT GOES ON
PRESENTS VOLUME 6: NUGGETS<br>HOSTED BY LENNY KAYE (AS
LINK CROMWELL)<br>"IT'S A NUGGET IF YOU DUG
IT"<br><br>In 1972 Sire Records released a two-record set of
garage classics compiled by Lenny Kaye. That record was
the blueprint for the future and a key to the past.
The songs were chosen by Lenny as a tribute to all
the sixties garage bands across America. Most of the
groups on the original record were lucky if they had a
hit single and/or an album released. Many of their
records were promptly placed in cut-out bins and lost to
the annals of time.<br><br>Or so we
thought...<br><br>Collectors started to discover these lost gems.
Rediscovering artists like The Magicians, Chocolate Watchband,
The Seeds, Shadows of Night, Electric Prunes and The

of the groups were<br>one-hit wonders enjoying their
"15 minutes of fame." Perhaps they were on Tom Hanks'
mind when he wrote and directed "That Thing You
Do."<br><br>In 1998 Rhino Records released a four CD box set
that included the original album and enhanced the set
with other lost gems of the era. THE BEAT<br>GOES ON

he helped to create. The artists will be backed by
an all star band including Andy York, Tony Shanahan,
Rich Pagano, Kris Woolsey and musical director Andy

I hope you all ordered a copy (or 2 or 3) of
Richard's video compilation. Nancy and other talented folks
did a great job of providing some historical
(hysterical?) clips of RXH in performance over the last few
decades (yikes!), as well as some behind-the-scenes
shots. It's all held together by - what else? - that
wonderful RXH music. I was most thrilled to hear "Vacation"
for the 1st time, and nearly as ecstatic to hear
"Hoosiers" as well. Order a copy today if you haven't
already, and if you have - what do you think of
"X-posures"?

The Heymans and Peter Noone have a long-standing
relationship - Peter recorded a few demos of RXH songs some
years back (most notably, "Hoosier"). Here's a recent
e-mail exchange between Nancy and Peter. Nancy
wrote:<br><br>Hi Peter,<br><br>"Mrs. Brown" is playing on the

nothing ever<br>sounds as fresh as it does minutes after
it's recorded.<br><br>What else is new with you? When

Hi John, thanks for the "welcome", and sorry i
haven't been able to get back here for so long, work has
been hectic (i am only online at work). The interview
was great, finally got to read it just today. It's
very cool that you have taken the time and trouble to
create this forum for Richard's fans, hats off to ye! I
am going to email you all of the shots that i have
had scanned (about 1/4 of all that i took) from the

8. What influence does your compassion for
animals have on your artistry?<br>RXH: I think my love of
animals has made me a more sensitive and compassionate
(and sometimes flea-ridden) person which hopefully
seeps into my music (minus the fleas).<br>ITCHY

acquisition of some home studio equipment, you've moved from
the engineer's "Living Room" to your own, at least
for some basic<br>tracks. How has the experience of
recording at home been for you?<br>RXH: I've discovered I
sing much better (and looser) in my underwear, which I
couldn't do in a normal studio. Also, my wife likes to
engineer<br>topless, which I find quite agreeable (and
stimulating).<br>BRIEFS-CLAD MUSICIAN RECORDS SHORT SONGS; WIFE KEEPS ABREAST

many of the various "Tribute to..."-type shows in the
NY area - the British Invasion, the Monkees, and
others. Do you enjoy these kinds of performances? Are you
a<br>part of them because of your love of the artists'
music, or because of the opportunity for exposure to a
broader audience, or both?<br>RXH: Truthfully, it's
because I was asked to do them. That's all it takes. I've
done four 60's music shows at the Bottom Line called
"The Beat<br>Goes On" series. Two were British
Invasion, one was the American Response, and the last was a
recreation of the "Hullabaloo" show. I've also done Joe

Fez.<br>"SEE ME AT THE FEZ," SEZ HEYMAN<br><br>11. Are you
drumming at all as part of your live gigs?<br>RXH: I

drummer Kurt would have to<br>learn the guitar
part.<br>HEYMAN TO FANS - "BEAT IT", WHILE DRUMMER

of changes have you seen in the city, in overall
quality of life as well as the music<br>scene?<br>RXH: I
notice that everyone seems to be getting older every
day. There's a small core of friends and acquaintances
who have some terrific bands<br>as well as albums --
the Rooks, George Usher, the Grip Weeds, Dave Rave,
Green Rooftops, Mannix.<br>ROCKER PROVIDES LITERAL

disappointing.<br>GAIN, LOSS OF PUBLISHING DEAL LEAVES HEYMAN FEELING

Here's the transcript (in 2 parts) of the
questions from various "Living Room" members and RXH's
responses. In keeping with Richard's light-hearted replies
to some of the questions, we've added a few,
fictitious, distorted headlines the tabloids might concoct if
they were to excerpt from the interview. Thanks to our
contributing Living Room'ers, as well as Richard and Nancy,
for their time and efforts.<br><br><br>1. What can
you tell us about the new CD?<br>RXH: The album will
be called "Basic Glee". I recorded 24 drum tracks at
a 24-track studio for 24 hours here in New York.
The rest of the<br>performances (vocals, guitars,
bass, etc.) are being recorded in our living room
(Nancy's and mine) along with our sixteen cats dozing
off<br>except when I hit a real high note. Then we will pick 14
songs to be mixed back at the 24-hour track
studio.<br>STIMULANT-ADDICTED MUSICIAN DISTURBS ANIMALS' SLEEP TO RECORD NEW
CD<br><br>2. Is there any thematic thread to the new songs, as
there was for the songs appearing on
"Cornerstone"?<br>RXH: Not in the songs themselves, but more in the
production. I'm trying to keep it really basic. A couple of
guitars (OK, four or five), bass, drums and vocals.
There'll be no string sections, horn arrangements or any
fancy adornment, just yer basic rock combo.<br>HEYMAN
TO SESSION PLAYERS - "DROP DEAD!"<br><br>3. Have
there been any major influences on your work since
rock's heyday in the 60's, or is that a function of
those influences existing while you were coming of age
as a musician?<br>RXH: I've stopped listening to the
radio completely for the last several years. I haven't
bought a new album in years either, which
doesn't<br>exactly answer your question, but...hey, the 60's weren't
that great -- the Beatles were OK, but they were no
Boyz II Men or N'Sync.<br>ROCKER ADMITS TO OBSESSION

you at all measure your success in any "commercial"
terms; i.e., units sold, air play, etc.? If not, how do
you determine your level of<br>achievement - if you
are concerned with that at all?<br>RXH: The increment
of my i.e. units sold, airplay, etc. is so small
that can't be measured. There is no measuring device
that can calculate such infinitessimal amounts. My
level of achievement can only be gauged by how many
records I've put out. So far it's three. When I have
twelve, I'll feel pretty good.<br>"IT'S SO SMALL YOU
CAN'T SEE IT", ADMITS R.X. HEYMAN"<br><br>5. "Hey Man!"
was your major label release, and we fans consider it
to be a terrific album. But the experience of being
signed to Sire did not turn out as you might have hoped
it would (I imagine).<br>Did that experience sour
you on involvement with the majors, or are you still
hoping for the right kind of "big" break?<br>RXH: That
experience soured me on my involvement with the majors and I
am not still hoping for the right kind of "big
break". Of course, if somebody asks...<br>SOURED ON
MAJORS, HEYMAN TELLS LABELS TO "PUCK-ER OFF"<br><br>6.
Did you grow up thinking you wanted to BE your
musical idols, or that you could be BETTER than your
idols?<br>RXH: I didn?t grow up wanting to be my idols but I
thought it would be very cool if I could arrange for the
Beatles to attend one of my junior high school parties.
It didn't happen.<br>"BEATLES STIFFED MY PROM,"
SNIFFS MUSICIAN<br><br>7. Is there any sort of method to
your approach to songwriting? Do you hum, strum,
pluck, bang - in any particular order?<br>RXH: I can't
believe it! Have you been spying on me? That's exactly my
method and in that order, too. Actually, there is no
method. It just<br>happens. Sometimes a melody and some
words may pop into my head or I might hear a song in a
dream. More likely I'll be playing guitar or<br>piano
and stumble onto some chord progression that triggers
a melody. Short of thievery, whatever works is fine
with me.<br>PARANOID ROCKER ACCUSES FAN OF SPYING ON

Hello all fellow RXH fans, glad to be amongst
yous! My "story" began about five-six years ago when i
was dredging some bargain bins (a favorite
passtime)for any good deals, and ran into "Hey Man!" for
$7.99. I kind of looked real hard at it, as i wasn't at
all familiar with Richard at that point. I guess from
the colorful and clever cover concept, coupled with
Richard's fashion statement, convinced me enough that at
$7.99 it was worth seeing if this guy was at all "pop"
or something altogether different. So, i went home
with that and a few other purchases, perhaps a bit
skeptical about what i would end up hearing. Well, any of
you can probably imagine the shock and JOY as the
opening track "Falling Away" kicked in - i was floored!
But i was even more floored as the disc played on, in
disbelief that so many pop gems would be crammed onto one
title, and moreso that this was a name i had never heard
before! Well i cherished that cd (and still do!), and
dutifully informed the few folks i am in touch with who
also love well-crafted pop (one of those people is a
die-hard fan to this day). It was not quite a year or
perhaps even two later, when i was once again dredging
the bargain bins (same chain store, different
location)and my jaw fell as i flipped through the $6.99's and
$7.99's all of a sudden running into one with a rather
distinctive $.99 price sticker on it! And, it was, of course,
Living Room. I'll tell you, that was one of the longest
20-minute rides i have ever taken to get home, SO anxious
to hear this earlier effort (i still had no concrete
idea as to how many titles Richard had recorded and
released at that point). Well, needless to say i was
pretty much as impressed as i had been upon hearing "Hey
Man!", and to this day that $.99 purchase only falls
ahead of the $7.99 for "Hey Man!" as the best rock'n
roll dollars (value for the money) that i have ever
spent! Well, as you may note, i am not blessed with a
whole lotta brevity, at least not when it comes to
discussing things near and dear to my heart! So, when i post
my NEXT message, telling the story of finally
getting to see Richard and Nancy play in Boston last
August and meeting them, etc., if you are pressed for
time DON'T attempt to read it!!!<br>Also, i shot some
really nice 35mm color that night, and will be glad to
share the scanned shots with the Fan Club or with other
individual fans. Just email me if you are interested. Bye
for now!<br> Rick

Announcing a CONTEST! A bona-fide ACTIVITY
associated with this fan club - some of you thought this day
would never come. Well, pick<br>yourself up off the
floor and read on:<br><br>Here's YOUR CHANCE to
INTERVIEW the one and only RICHARD X. HEYMAN! <br><br>Ask
him the questions all America - nay, the World - has
been waiting breathlessly to learn the answers
to:<br>(Sample questions)<br>- "When's yer new CD comin' out,
Richard?"<br>- "Richard, which summer or summers did you spend
up at Greenwood Lake?"<br>- "Hey Richard - I can
play an E7 on my guitar; wanna hear me?"<br>(Again,
these are only sample questions; you are in no way
obligated, or even encouraged, to ask any of these except
maybe the first one)<br><br>Here's how it's going to
work (I think):<br><br>1. Submit a list of questions
YOU would want to ask RXH, if you had the chance to
interview him, to:<br><br>
virtual_questions@...<br><br>no later than 11:59 P.M., Eastern Daylight
Time,
7/4. This gives you time to watch the fireworks and
then send in your questions.<br><br>2. Assume you've
got 30 minutes to plumb the depths of his soul, etc.
In other words, maybe 10 or 15 questions, and you
might not get a<br>chance to ask them all before
Richard has to leave in his limo for a 1-on-1 with Larry
King.<br><br>3. An independent panel of judge(s) will review the
questions and select a winner, using criteria which are too
arcane and unformulated to reveal here.<br><br>4.
Include an e-mail contact address with your entry (if you
prefer to be contacted at an e-mail other than the one
your entry is submitted from, please list that address

at 11:58 P.M. on the 4th and send<br>in your entry
at 11:59 - but you MUST be a member in order for
your entry to qualify. Therefore, you MUST include the
Yahoo ID under which you joined this club.<br><br>6.
Once the judge(s) have a chance to review all entries
received by the deadline, the winner will be notified via
return e-mail. The winner MUST agree to the following
terms and conditions:<br>- Richard will CALL THE WINNER
to conduct the interview, at a telephone number the
winner provides, at a date and time convenient for both,
but mostly for him. International entries we might
have to work out a slightly different system.<br>- The
winner has 30 minutes to fire away. Any time required

Am i the only one who can't access the video? There seems to be a problem with
the path and/or filename.... Is this a problem on my end, or should OnlineTV be
alerted?

review from a friend who will remain anonymous
(I'm the one who won the bet).
Ray<br><br>************************************************<br><br>I lost a bet
at the NY Pop Circus last Saturday
night (evens/odds -- should have gone for "odd") as to
who was going to dish this out to the Digest.
<br><br>This year's Pop Circus was a fine night of energetic
jangly guitar pop as performed by the Kennedys,
Gripweeds, George Usher, Richard X. Heymann, and the
Spongetones.<br><br>Some of you may remember Jennie writing last week
about Kiva, the Python Lady's, scheduled appearance at
the Circus and how Jennie's anacondaphobia convinced
the organizers to nix the reptile. <br><br>But Kiva,
it seems, had more tricks up her proverbial sleeve
than a mere snake.<br><br>Shortly after the Kennedys
set, Kiva took to the dance floor, dressed a la Salome
minus five of the seven veils, accompanied by
appropriate <br>snake-charming music, and pythonless. She
broke several glasses on the floor. She walked on the
shards. Spreading even more glass onto the floor <br>(we
suspected this last batch was safety glass), she proceeded
to undulate her way onto the shards until she was
completely prone, the audience wincing as she
writhed.<br><br>Now, ordinarily, this would be enough to satisfy an
audience that, frankly, was not at the Merc to see actual
circus acts. But Kiva is no ordinary diva. She continued
to wiggle around on glass while a black-clad,
Soho-type male assistant draped her abdomen with a wisp of
chiffon (what this fabric square was supposed to protect
remains a mystery). Upon her chiffon-swathed stomach he
placed a concrete cinderblock.<br><br>Mr. Assistant took
a sledgehammer and, looking as though he planned to
knock the bell right off the amusement park game,
smashed into the cinderblock. And voila. The undamaged
block slid off Kiva's chiffon tummy with a resounding
clunk. (Kiva must have an abdomen of iron.)<br><br>Back
went the cinderblock. Mr. Assistant, looking a tad
frustrated, heaved the hammer, and thwack -- broken
cinderblock. (By this point the dance floor was fairly strewn
with glass and concrete bits, and we were placing
wagers as to whether bits of Kiva would shortly be
intermingled.)<br><br>But no. Kiva arose intact, albeit a mite crumbly with
concrete dust. <br><br>Fairly impressive stuff, this. The
Gripweeds played a terrific set, and after they departed
the stage, we were treated to "Kiva, The
Sequel."<br><br>Still sans snake, the lady reclaimed the dance floor,
this time dressed head to toe in skin tight black
leather and what appeared to be electrical tape.
Industrial strength boots. Black safety goggles. Bob Vila
meets Barbarella. <br><br>The front of her outfit is
covered from neckline to crotch in something shiny and
metallic. She's carrying a ferocious-looking piece of
battery-operated equipment. Over the strains of a clubhouse
technoid beat, Kiva revs her <br>engine, so to speak, and
begins to run this contraption up and down the front of
her body with such a spectacular, and far-reaching,
burst of sparks that we in the side banquettes made
nervous note of the fire exits. <br><br>It took a moment
to realize what she was doing and what she was doing
it with....<br><br>Kiva's was performing an
over-the-top erotic act of simulated self-gratification with
an orbital sander! <br><br>Could it be that Kiva,
forced to improvise for the python, mistook Home Depot
for The Pink Pussycat? And whatever does she do with
the snake? In any event, she'd be a big hit at the
next Black & Decker convention.<br><br>Usher and Co.,
Richard X., and the Spongetones rose to the occasion and
ensured that the evening didn't lapse into anticlimax,
and we who smoke lit cigarettes as Kiva departed the
floor, presumably headed for a cold shower. <br><br>What
do you think are the odds that at least several
members of the audience spent part of Sunday eyeing the
contents of their basement workbenches in an entirely new
way?

XH is currently recording tracks for his next
release. Among the songs he is considering for inclusion
on the new CD is one entitled "Back To The
Fairground" - and here are the lyrics!:<br><br>BACK TO THE

had known Richard's name from seeing it in
various magazines and whatnot, but never heard his music.
While working at a local radio station early last year,
I came across a copy of 'Cornerstone' and basically
fell in love with it; it was all I could play for
several months. Later that year the "RXH trio" came to
Philadelphia, and I made it a point to go see them. Considering
the hype the event was getting in some of the local
press, the concert was very poorly attended (maybe five
people were there... I guess these things happen on a
rainy Saturday night). Nevertheless, it did give me the
opportunity to talk with Richard and Nancy after the show.
Since then I've corresponded with Nancy on a fairly
regular basis and had the pleasure of spending an
afternoon with them on a recent visit to New York City.
(They've come back to Philadephia on one other occasion,
with only slightly better attendance... get with it,
Philly!!)I've been very pleased to find such good music coming
from people so friendly and approachable. I only wish
I can get into New York more often to see them play
as often as they do. I'm also pleased to be part of
the club!
