Here's some details on the gig being held in Tunbridge Wells this FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13TH, which Unlabel have helped to organise and are co-promoting with Oxjam Kent; we fully endorse all of the acts playing.
It is a charity event to raise funds for Oxfam’s work around the world and it'd be great to see as many of you as possible.
The new Songs of My Lap album 'Black In Back' (un044) will also be released on this night, with a donation from record sales going to Oxfam so please do come and buy a copy on the night if you can.
Oxjam Kent presents...
An evening of shiny indie-pop niceness, with fairy lights, featuring…
Brighton based CLEARLAKE make a long-awaited return the The Forum. They formed in 1999 and are signed to Domino Records (home of Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand as well as many excellent underground indie acts). They have released three critically acclaimed albums: 'Lido' (2001), 'Cedars' (2003) and 'Amber' (2006), and have toured the world in their own right including sell-out shows in the UK and America, as well as supporting Pulp, playing for Scott Walker at his legendary Meltdown Festival and appearing on TV shows including Later With Jools Holland. They continue to impress audiences and gain fans with their uniquely British take on indie guitar music and have just released the new single 'It's Getting Light Outside'. They really are a wonderful band! http://www.myspace.com/clearlakenoise
MR. SOLO will be better known to some as 'The Vessel', being the lead singer and guitarist from the band David Devant and His Spirit Wife, who have recently released ‘The Lost World of David Devant’ album. Mr. Solo is the name of his new guitar pop project and his debut solo album 'All Will Be Revealed' on Outstanding Records is in the shops now and available on iTunes, with a new single 'Number One' also available now. http://www.myspace.com/mistersolo
STARS OF AVIATION are an eight piece French inspired lo-fi indie power-pop outfit, whose instruments range from accordion, trumpet and bassoon through traditional guitars and drums, to recorder. They are signed to Kitchen Records and recently released the single 'Marie et l'accordeon', which was described as 'a slice of escapist wonder'. http://www.myspace.com/starsofaviation
SONGS OF MY LAP is Tunbridge Wells based solo artist Alex Hancock, who has released three albums on Unlabel Records and was previously a member of several well-respected bands, including legendary underground outfit Unhome. He utilises guitar, piano and laptop electronics to beautiful effect. http://www.myspace.com/songsofmylapmusic
There will also be a raffle and auction held at this event featuring some rare and signed items from all of the artists performing alongside items donated by other local artists and music related shops.
This is all taking place at: The Forum, Fonthill, The Common, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 8YU.
Entrance Fee: £5. Doors: 8:00pm. First act on early!
Full event info, tracks by each band (including a new and exclusive track from Songs of My Lap) and info on other Oxjam events hapening in this area is all available at: http://www.myspace.com/oxjamkent
Oxjam is a UK-wide festival of music events in October; for more general information please visit: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/oxjam
This is the first Unlabel show for some months and there might not be another one for a while so do please make the effort to come down, it will be worth it...

I just wanted to let you know that s-m-a-s-h.net will automatically
display any posts you make on this public mailing list..
I have also opened up the group so that non-members can view its
messages and contents - ALTHOUGH you will still be able to hide your
email address simply by changing your profile settings on yahoo. (I
think it defaults to hide your email address, so you will have nothing
to worry about if you're worried about spammers).
Speaking of spams, I should let you know that all new member posts
need to be approved by me. Once I verify that you're human, I will
change your settings to "never moderate"... this is just to warn you
in case you just sign up and your messages aren't displayed right away.
Anyway, I have been banning a few spammers, so all is good, when it
comes down to it.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions as far as a free
messageboard that offers RSS and/or just suggestions about s-m-a-s-h.net.
Oh, also, it's come to my attention that some of you cannot download
the S*M*A*S*H demos. If this is the case, send me your email address
and I will email them to you. I can be reached at
sleeperster/a/gmail.com, please note /a/ should be replaced with @.
At The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Doors: 7:30pm.
POLMO POLPO is the main project of Toronto-based musician Sandro Perri. His first full length album 'Like Hearts Swelling' follows on from a series of self-released 12 inches on his own Audi Sensa label (re-issued on CD last year by Alien8 Recordings). Now part of the Constellation Records roster, this new album demonstrates, his ear for long-burn drones and submerged rhythms overlaid with instrumental sources (slide guitar, strings, accordion) and fits in perfectly with Constellation’s big stars, Godspeed You Black Emperor. Building on foundations of multi-layered full-spectrum drones and loops, the music of Polmo Polpo is distinguished by slide guitar motifs that are more naive pop pastoral than spaghetti western. More info and to listen: Polmo Polpo at Alien 8 and Polmo Polpo at Constellation Records.
MATRA returns to The Forum to play live in support of his new album 'Drome', released this week on Unlabel. Expect timeless electronic listening music from one of Kent's finest exponents of the genre. Due to studying commitments, Matra only gets to perform every now and again with rare live performances taking place just once or twice a year! More info and to listen: Matra on MySpace and Matra at Unlabel.
GARETH DICKSON is a solo artist utilising acoustic guitar with effects (analogue delay and reverb) and vocals from Glasgow, Scotland. Gareth has released the album 'Spruce Goose' (available now from Norman Records) and also 'The Amber Goose Dance' 9 track CD as part of Unlabel's series52 project. More info and to listen: Gareth Dickson on MySpace.
BLACK STATIC TRANSMISSION is a man from Margate who makes some stunning sounds with the use of a guitar and impressive looping and manipulation. More info and to listen: Black Static Transmission on MySpace.
Local folks please do your best to come and support this show - we are very lucky to have Polmo Polpo playing in Tunbridge Wells!
The long awaited 15 track debut CD album from Matra aka Jon Barnes. Clocking in at over an hour, it’s a beautiful collection of many different styles of electronic listening music, perfect for all seasons.
Once again pressed in a limited edition; this time the first edition is 200 copies in glossy photo artwork.
This album will be launched at the gig with Polmo Polpo (Constellation Records) on Friday 30th June at The Forum in Tunbridge Wells - see info on the left...
The brand new single from the new-look Cove, a joint release between Unlabel and Noisestar.
After a nine month sabbatical spent writing and recording with new bass guitarist Druid, the band have turned up the volume on the already lurching fury of their sound and return with a two track single as a taster to the eagerly anticipated second album due later in the year, which is currently being recorded with Tim Cedar (Part Chimp / Ligament / Penthouse).
un041 Sonar Nation - 'Dirty Hands and Wishes' CD mini album.
The latest installment from Sonar Nation, a six track CD mini album, their first in around ten years.
"This release is a revealing display of unbridled emotion, heaving and breaking with the force of storm driven waves. And yet also exposing the tenderness of a man pleading for salvation and grace with the humility of a spiritual awakening".
Another limited edition release for another classic Kent based band.
un038 SJ - 'Threnody For The Victims of Ignorance' CD album.
Paul Taylor and Kevin Tomkins return with a new five track album clocking in at over an hour. This release sits somewhere between the extreme electronics of the past, the freeform guitar work sometimes heard in Bodychoke and the more recent improvised material heard on their last Unlabel release ‘Between Silences’ (un033).
The new SJ sound is still evolving.
The first 200 copies are housed in a custom laminted card sleeve.
(Also released on 13th March 2006 is the solo album 'Inertia' by Kevin Tomkins under the name Melt in the Unlabel series52).
Hailing from West Yorkshire, the four men known as Eiger present a collection of eight intriguing tracks on double CD.
Comparisons to Botch, Isis, Pelican and Joeyfat “with the demented screams of a northern bingo caller” have been made. Unpredictable, and like nothing you are likely to hear anywhere else. The music is fast, heavy, slow, delicate, loud and quiet in pretty equal measures.
Packaged in a beautiful litho-printed gatefold sleeve on luxury art-card stock.
Also still available is the latest Unlabel double CD compilation:
un040 Various Artists - 'un40rmulated' 40 track double CD compilation.
Behold the shiny new compilation for 2005/’06 featuring 40 (yes, forty!) tracks from 40 artists that we like very much, spread over two CDs - over two and a half hours of music, including all the usual suspects and many new guests, like this:
Disc A Nub - 'Jeremiah'. Headquarters - '(I'm Down With) The Amputation'. Joeyfat - 'But My Legs Belong to Daddy'. Die Munch Machine - 'Anthem Of The Munch'. Belt Motel - 'Mr. Vengeance'. Don't know if you remember me (Alun [Welsh]) I did the sound for you after
Ivor quit. I did the gigs in Austria, Belgium (the dour festival) and the forum.
I've stumbled across this site and that you Salv and Rob are giging again, I'm
gutted that I missed the Brighton gig at the Pressure Point. Let me know (if you
read this obviously) about any gigs that you do near Brighton, I'd love to see
and listen to you all again (I'd love to do the sound, and I'd do it for free,
just
for the pleasure).
Ps Do you know where Dave is, and what he's doing now?

Unlabel present the 2006 Summertime Special – a summer evening show like no other...
S*M*A*S*H + JOEYFAT + THE BORED HOUSEWIVES + COLLIDES IN ARC + THE PINS
Special guests for the night are
S*M*A*S*H.If you're thinking 'who?' then they were one of the greatest bands of the '90s who arrived at completely the wrong time! They caused an uproar in the NME, Melody Maker and the like with front cover spreads, amazing gig reviews, Singles of the Week and more. They were an adrenaline fuelled mix of anger, energy, righteous indignation, politics, DIY punk empowerment and star jumps, all choreographed to some of the finest songs you’ll ever hear. They played hundreds of gigs to thousands of normally overlooked punters, produced fanzines, badges and fantastic cheap sloganeering T-shirts by the bucket load as well as appearing on Top of the Pops - they could have been one of the biggest bands of our time. They were virtually self-banned by their dogged refusal to play the game; S*M*A*S*H were far too real for a nation being spoon-fed Blur, Suede and Oasis. Well now they’re back, the
original line up, with a mix of classics and new songs. They last played here in 1994 – it really was one of the best and most chaotic gigs at The Forum ever! Listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/llyc or find out more here: http://www.s-m-a-s-h.net/
JOEYFAT return to The Forum for the first time this year (it could also be the last time this year as one of them is off to India for some considerable period so they thought they’d better play a home town show before he goes!). If you've seen Joeyfat before then you know what to expect – a very tall bloke fronting some of the most extraordinary sounds a band can make, always with added extras and surprises along the way – and if you haven’t witnessed their bizarre
take on post-hardcore then, well, you really should. They don’t really sound like anyone else. At all. Listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/unlabel or find out more here: http://www.unlabel.net/joeyfat.htm
Making their live debut are . THE BORED HOUSEWIVES, which is the brand new project from the boys previously known as Jason and the Astronauts. No-one knows what they will sound like but if they’re half as good as the Astronauts then they should be ace. Listen to them doing something else here:
http://www.myspace.com/jasonandtheastronauts
Opening the evening are two more local acts – solo artist.COLLIDES IN ARC and the up-and-coming band.THE PINS, who are a blend of female vocals, screams, electronics, distorted trebly guitars and odd drumming (both on Win! Win! Win! Records). Listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/collidesinarc and http://www.myspace.com/thepinsmusic
S*M*A*S*H will now headline with a decent length set and the evening should finish in good time for trains etc. for all those people coming from far away.
By the way folks, last week someone flew 7,000 miles to see S*M*A*S*H play in Brighton (seriously!) so come on people, make the effort and come down for what should be a fun night. We won't be doing another big show like this until Christmas!
Various Artists - 'un40rmulated' - 40 track 2xCD compilation. Cove - 'Threes' ltd. edition 7" single. Sonar Nation - 'Dirty Hands and Wishes' CD mini album. Eiger - 'Eiger' double CD EP. SJ - 'Threnody For The Victims of Ignorance' CD album. Jason and the Astronauts - Tonight I'm Gonna...' CD single.
Also series52 - a new album released every week in 2006.
