What is SWARALAYAM?

In Tamil, a South Indian language, Swara means Musical Note, Alayam means House, and Layam means Rhythm. So Swaralayam is a house for the musical notes and/or a combination of melody and rhythm, which constitutes music.

SWARALAYAM ARTS FORUM

Swaralayam Arts Forum founded in June 1996 as a Texas Non-Profit Organization, is serving the educational needs of the American Carnatic Music (South Indian Classical) community.  This is done with the best quality teachers who are also accomplished world-class performers, composers and musicologists.  Currently we have two great World Class teachers in Vidwan Vittal Ramamurthy (of the Lalgudi tradition and a fifth generation direct musical descendant of Saint Thyagaraja),Vidushi Rajarajeshway Bhat & Kala Koumudi Shruti Iyer providing year-round teaching. These artistes also give concerts and lecture-demonstrations regularly.

CARNATIC MUSIC

Carnatic Music, the Classical Music of South India dates back to 4000 BC. The seven notes to an octave with its 12-pitch chromatic scale is India's contribution to World Music.

ACTIVITIES: Teaching Carnatic Music, Devotional Bhajans and Light Classical (Beginners to Advanced - Children to Adults), Lecture-demonstrations, Concerts, Annual Student Group participations, Arangetrams (in Music)
