OK, I just a couple of weeks ago spent a week at my son's band camp.
Alpharetta High Band spent one hot and sweaty week at Rock Eagle near
Lake Oconee in North Georgia. Hot, but very awesome. My son is in
his second year in the band. He is entering 10th grade and I got a
chance to see how a higher grade feels about a lower grade (even
though I did this years ago, it all seemed new.) Go to
http://newbrew.smugmug.com/Alpharetta%20High%20Band to see all the
band galleries since last year. Man, I love this stuff. And guess
what, Mike Mitchell is now my 5th grader's teacher at Creekview
Elementary (Alpharetta, GA.) If you haven't guessed, I'm the AHS
photographer. I'm so damn glad I'm working on another startup here in
Atlanta. Sure, I'm living off of savings. But, I get to be at
football games and at my 10 year old's band concerts.
Now, I've been married for over 20 years and love to get together with
my in-laws, my family and friends (including my Sunday School class).
So, why don't we (the band) get together? Do we all hate Jax that
much? Sure, my home there (900 Sq Ft) doesn't compare to here (6,000
Sq Ft). My cars are better (just traded my Porsche for a BMW and I
don't even drive my second car, a GMC Yukon XL and not ever my wife's
mini van). My toys are better (watches, boats and more.) And yes,
Alpharetta High blows Sandalwood out of the water. But, damn, I miss
SHS band. We had great uniforms, great music. GREAT MUSICIANS. And
we didn't have no stinkin' band camp. We had SUMMER BAND. The whole
summer. Talk about rugged.
I guess I could just wait until my 30th reunion in 3 years. But, I
want to spend time with band folks. So, what can we do to make this
happen? Please respond with your thoughts. If you don't have kids
going through this and need something to inspire you, go to your local
high school game this fall. If that doesn't get you worked up, then
you're, well, OLD. And even for you, the cure is a great get together
to make you FEEL young.
Write me. steve.youngblood@...
I went out to the saints76.com site that Randy Stackhouse had
mentioned in his post. This is the site for the class of '76 reunion
taking place later this month. The link to the history of the school
was really neat. Go read it:
http://saints76.com/yesterday's_school_of_the_future.htm. I didn't
realize that St. Johns Bluff Road wasn't paved until year 3 (the year
I started there in 7th grade for '73 - '74). How many remember St.
Johns Bluff as a dirt road? Or, how many remember that not only was
the area a swamp but also a mine? Before the school was built, some
sort of mining operation had left a large area of sand dunes just as
what used to be found where Regency Square was built.
Enjoy the history.
Hello. I do remember your name. Going to Sandalwood for both junior
and senior high, I was able to see graduates from '74 until my my year
in '79.
Yes, I selfishly picked years that worked for me ('79) and my brother
('81). I even didn't include my sister's year ('86). BUT, please
jump in and use this group area to get folks interested. I'd like to
get folks talking to create interest in a get together.
Thanks, Steve

Hum.. I saw a link to this site on the saints76.com site.
I was the drum major in 1976. Sounds like it is a little earlier
timeframe than this site.
But I figured I would just say hi!
Very cool that you are letting people know where we
are and how we are doing. Neat to see too that you
put the websites online too.

Hello! Just wanted to get everone excited. Here is my son's high school band.
Alpharetta,
GA High: http://www.alpharettaband.org/index.html. As you might guess, we live
in
Alpharetta, GA (known in metro Atlanta, as "Afluenza", I'll let you translate.)
Mike Mitchell's
high school is just around the corner, in unincorporated North Fulton County,
but really also
in Afluenza. Here is his band's site: http://www.northviewbands.com/. They
show "Duluth"
as their address. BUT, they are in Fulton county, not Gwinnet. You'd have to
be here to
understand. Wasn't it nice in Jacksonville when there was Duval and other
meaningless
outlying counties (guess they aren't so unpopulated anymore.)
Hey, seeing my kids go through band makes me remember that band was my club back
then.
I loved it. I may have done the whole frat house thing at UF. But, nothing was
as good as
band. Let's get the word out that there are a few of us who'd like to get
together, while we
still have some hair (and still something close to our original hair color.)
Drop me a line when you can. We're planning our summer vacation. We've dropped
the
Hawaii bit so we can be in Florida. It'd be great to be in the Jax area seeing
everyone.
Steve
Lisa, great to hear from you. Please let all you know that we'd like
to get together. I left Florida 20 years ago and don't see that many
people from home here in Atlanta. But, we do have a link on the
Sandalwood High site. Got to hope others would mind a little bit of home.

Hi Ho Marching Saints! I spoke with Georgiana over the weekend and
she told me about the effort to pull together a band reunion. That
would be so fun! Could we please have disco music and dancing?
I am a teacher at UCF these days. I teach radio-tv things. My
husband Tim is a news photog at WESH-TV. We have adopted Tim's nephew
Evan. He is 18 and is in high school.
My lil' sister Ginny (Marching Saint 82-84 I think) still lives in
Jax. She sees Rusty Matzen's mom sometimes and is in touch with Terri
Tanner, an orchestra alum.
Wouldn't it be funny if we all brought our instruments and tried to
play the school song?
Well, that's all for now. Good luck and keep me posted.
Thanks Georgiana. I remember at our last class reunion she was living in
Raleigh, North Carolina.

Hi everyone. Gee, this feels funny. . . after all this time to be
communicating with you and seeing your faces in my mind, as if
yesterday.
I'm not in touch with anyone really. . .but I believe I know where
Lisa Mills is. I will call her this evening and let her know about
this group.
thank you O : )
Georgiana
Groups members, lets get the word out. I attended an "end of marching season
party" this
evening. Wow, it was fun (kids and parents.) I know we were as big (if not
bigger) than this
group. Reach out to your former band friends know we'd like to see them here
(and in Jax
next year).
Steve
Greg, yes, we'd like to meet in Jacksonville. The beach and home in one
neat package! Luckily we've got lots of time to get it together and get
schedules sorted.
Ideas welcome.

Greg, it's great to have you. Please let others know we are here. I've been
away from
Florida for 20 years and have seen only a few people from home here in Atlanta.
Cheers,
Steve

playing violin thru jr. and sr. high. But I wisened up and crossed
over by playing sousaphone in marching band and string bass in the

Hey Guys,
Hope many of you can participate. Look forward to seeing all of
the "old people" from the "good ole days."
Keep in touch. Steve Youngblood is heading this and is the go to
