Sara Hickman eNewsLetter April 1, 2001
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So, it's April Fool's Day, a perfect time for A note from Sara. But here's
where the tomfoolery comes in - Sara isn't writing this newsletter! Oh no!
Yepper, this is a newsletter from Sara's Mailing List WiseGuy. Seems that
Sara phoned me and is a bit sicky-pooh right now, so she is taking some
down-time to build her strength for her mini tour.

Oh, you lucky people, Sara is coming to a town near you! Don't forget to make
plans to see Miz Hickman this time around, because she is so excited about
some things happening to her. First off, she is in an article by Bruce Kluger
(page 87) in the recent (April 16, 2001 edition) US Weekly (Julia
Roberts/"Oscar Fashion" cover, not a Tom Cruise cover as previously believed
- see what happens when a favorite wins an Academy Award!!) and secondly,
BigKids Video wants to make a half-hour video of her children's-related
album, "Toddler" .. and lastly, Sara won the Texas Lottery!!! Well, okay,
that last bit about the lottery was a big fat April Fooley, but the previous
stuff is true and makes Sara all giddy with happiness... which means that her
upcoming shows ought to be a sensation!

Here's Sara's schedule for the next few weeks:
---------------
Mon. April 2, 2001 Ann Arbor, MI
Sara at The Ark--TOMORROW!!!!
---------------
Wed. April 4, 2001 Appleton, WI
Sara goes to the land o' cheese & goodness to play at the Appleton Public
Library. Maybe check out a few books, too!
---------------
Thur. April 5, 2001 Chicago, IL
Schuba's -the best lil' place in the Windy City!
---------------
Fri. April 6, 2001 Troy, MI
Listening Room at Kensington Church
---------------
Sat. April 7, 2001 Indianapolis, IN
The Rehearsal Studios, Rehearsal Studio Productions Inc
---------------
Sun. April 8, 2001 St. Louis, MO
Generations Nightclub
---------------
Sat. April 22, 2001 Ft. Worth, TX
Ft. Worth Main Street Festival
---------------

So get a babysitter, bring all of your friends an co-workers and make plans
to give Sara a big.. ummm...
AnnArborAppletonChicagoTroyIndianapolisSt.LouisFt.Worth welcome!

Hey, how about ...the first person to get Sara to sing "The Kayaking Song" in
one of her out-of-town concerts will get a Toddler Video (out later this
year???Early next year???) from me! You're on your honor here, so I'm relying
on your and Sara's word! You can reach me in care of this e-mail address:

Hi all,

I just got home from the Sara show here in St. Louis, and wanted
to get it all down before I forgot. (There is one part I will NEVER
forget, however).

The opening singer was Barbara Kessler, who did a fine job
singing and playing her acoustic. She got the crowd singing, and she
said that she had just reached the ultimate in coolness - one of her
songs has been played on "Car Talk" on NPR.

Sara played without any backup, just her and her guitar. As best
I can recollect, the songs she played were:

Shadowboxing
Happy In Your Love
She told a great story about missing her hubby while out on the
road, dedicated it to him.

500x (The Train Song)
Once again, it's always great to hear this song, as well as the
story about doing yoga in a warehouse apartment across from the train
yard...

Look at it this way
Not sure why, but she dedicated this to "all the pissheads" who
can just try to ruin your outlook on things...

Simply
As always, beautiful. I think this is the first time I've seen
her play this one live.

Woman Waiting To Happen
     Her 'Helen Reddy' song...

Moment Of Grace

Too Fast

I Wear The Crown
If these last 2 songs don't get you laughing, nothing will! She
got the guys and girls to sing separate "I wear the crown" choruses...

Happy Birthday To Me
Ahem, that is, me. Yes, my friends requested Sara to bring me
up on stage and sing Happy Birthday (I turn 40 in 2 days). So, she
did. In the manner that Marilyn Monroe sang it to President Kennedy -
you know, "Happy (sigh) Birthday (deep sigh) Dear (sigh) Ji-im". I
won't forget that one anytime soon!

Standing Ground
Someone in the audience requested this - and Sara said, you know,
nobody ever asks for that one! She seemed very pleased to get this
request.

Everything's Red

It's Alright

So since I got brought up and sung to, my perspective is kind of
skewed - I'll not forget this one. It would have been nice to have
Kristin DeWitt there too, but don't get me wrong - I'm not
complaining at all. As always Sara's voice was in fine form, and she
was playing excellent guitar - especially considering that she was
playing with a cut on her finger...as she said, let me just say right
now, "ooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww".

She said this was the last night of her mini-tour. If anyone is
anywhere near St. Louis, the Generations Nightclub she plays at is
quite nice - seats maybe 80 to 100 people, sound is good, it's a neat
place. It's attached to a Holiday Inn, so that's convenient. (NO,
it's not a "Johnny and the Lounge Lizards play the Holiday Inn" bar!)

Anyway, I hope you all get a chance to go out and see her next
time she gets on the road. She is almost sold out of One Flower To
The Left - I think she said there are only 500, and the last ones she
had in St. L. were #425 and 426. So act now! ;)

are! Sara just seems to do that to us!

As for myself, I'm waiting to see her at the Wildflower festival here.

And if Brave Combo is on the same stage right after Sara, maybe people will
get lucky and they'll do a few songs together.
Sara sat in with Brave Combo at a fundraising show last fall in
Dallas for A.R.T.S. for People, and it was a wonderful blend.

Just a short email from the Annoying MailingList Wiseguy...

Sara is finally back in Texas from a glorious, almost 2-week tour promoting
her songs, especially her new personal cd release, "Toddler."

Then it hit her... she didn't have the traditional "cd release party" for
"Toddler" at all!

So, to make up for that, this coming Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 1:00pm, at
the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum in Austin, Texas, Sara will finally
celebrate her release of "Toddler" with a cd release show! Yippee!

Here's the info:
where: Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum
605 Robert E. Lee Road (near Zilker Park, off Barton Springs Road)
Austin, TX
Date: Saturday, April 21, 2001 <--yikes! THIS weekend!
Time: 1pm

So come one, come all! And be sure to bring your toddlers! ;o)

Hello, Kitty Cats!

This is Sara trying to catch up with each of you! How have you been? How was
your Easter/Passover/Spring Holiday? I was fortunate to actually meet the
REAL Easter Bunny this year. He's about 6' 2'', and he was fuzzy with white
fur. I gave him a giant carrot and he handed me a basket of goodies for the
girls. Wow. He's a mysterious dude!

So much is going on, my head has been in a bit of a whirl! Thanks for your
patience!
-----
First, thanks to everyone on my recent 8 day tour up in Illinois, Wisconsin,
Michigan, Missouri and Indiana. To all the volunteers who helped out, your
support means more than I can say.
And to my angelic friend, Amiti, who took eight days off from work and drove
the whole tour with me. We had a blast and saw some beautiful sights. Here
are some highlights:

* In Wisconsin, there is a restaurant called SCHREINERS and you simply MUST
go to one and try their cinnamon rolls. FORGET ANY OTHER CINNAMON ROLLS you
have ever eaten. THESE ARE THE REAL DEAL. And all the waitstaff wear
matching, crisp uniforms and say "Thank You". LOVE THAT!

* I am going to invest in a bumpersticker that reads OH, BOY! TROY! because
that is how I feel about The Kensington Church in Troy, Michigan. I have been
performing for 30 years, and let me say I felt such great love, respect and
joy performing at this venue---a 1200 seat church with full production
facilities---think of a mixture of Austin City Limits meets Carnegie Hall.
Just fantastic!

* The Public Library in Appleton, Wisconsin was also nothing short of pure
pleasure! The soundman was awesome, the audience was enthusiastic, and we
were all sitting in a basement! Plus, we could be as noisy as we wanted AND
we were in a library! Unbelievable! Thanks to Elizabeth Eisen for bringing me
to lovely Appleton...and it turns out Elizabeth was my baby sitter back when
I was three and living in Dekalb, IL!!! Plus, the Paper Valley Hotel in
downtown Appleton ROCKS!!! It has a GIANT pool, work out facility (which,
yes, I used!) and a yummy sauna.

* Indianapolis---after getting lost for three hours and finally locating the
facility, THE REHEARSAL STUDIOS, I was delighted to discover that George
would be running sound. He was the sound man on the Dan Fogelberg tour, so I
was definately ready to go up on stage and sing sing sing!
Thanks, George, for making me sound like I had a band! And Barbara Kessler
opened and she is stellar...if you have never heard her, check her out.

* Generations in St. Louis was super, and I sang a special birthday song to
Jim...I pretended I was Marilyn Monroe, so just let your imaginations run
wild with that one.

* The ARK in Ann Arbor and the Schuba's show were fun, too, I just don't have
any weird stories to share on these shows.. except that I got to see Tom and
Jeri and Tracey and Laura, and that was a treasure.
---------
I missed my kids and my husband terribly, and I was very glad to land safely
back in Austin. Although, I must admit, now I miss the blue Ford Explorer I
was driving...wow, what a car. (This is not a paid Ford endorsement, I'd just
never driven a SUV before. Now I understand the charisma!)

Ok...enough Sara babble! Here's what's coming up:
-------
This week I'm honored to be recording "Listen to the Radio", a Nanci Griffith
song, for her upcoming compilation CD to help raise funds to remove land
mines. I'll let you know more in the future about when it will be released.
Sounds like there are going to be all kinds of groovy artists on the
disc...from Hootie & the Blowfish to Bruce Springstein (whoa!) to little ol
me.

The New Ulm Art Festival (New Ulm, TX) will be this weekend, April 28...I'll
be singing on the baseball diamond again this year...I usually play around
7...and I always start with the National Anthem...plaaaaay ball!

May 4...Lily B Elementary, Arlington, TX...performing for the children
May 5...The Open Door, Arlington, TX
May 7....Grammies in the School...Austin, TX...1-5 pm, I'll be on the panel
talking about the
          music industry/performing...
May 13...Mothers' Milk Bank Concert, Waterloo Park, Austin, TX...12-8
pm...free outdoor
concert to benefit the Milk Bank...with Brave Combo, Kelly Willis,
me, Eddie Coker
Foamy, and Rue La La. THIS IS REALLY FUN, come if you can and
celebrate your
          mom!
May 17...Dallas, TX...All Good Cafe, 2934 Main St., 214-742-5362 (this is a

thought I better put all the scoop)
May 18...Richardson, TX...Wildflower Show
May 19...I'll be painting a mural at the Dallas YMCA
May 20...Dallas, TX...Club Dada, 214-744-dada...I'll be doing a children's

In the fall, I will be coming to Colorado, Michigan, Maryland and returning
to the Wolftrap in DC! We're also hoping to do Mountain Stage Radio...

Lastly, if anyone would like to volunteer to help with the Mothers' Milk Bank
Concert, we need volunteers. Please contact Sarah Emery at

Thanks for all you do, and look out...I'm gonna make a dance record called

Mario Tarradell's concise review of "Moments of Grace" in The Dallas
Morning News "what's in the changer?" section does a nice job -- within the
limits of the space -- of capturing part of the essence of the CD. Although
I, personally, would never call any of you obscure. You're all special to
me.
Mario wrote: "This compilation disc, a benefit for Dallas' A.R.T.S.
for People organization, serves as a strong introduction to modern-day
Texas singer-songwriters. The mood is folky and intimate; the lineup ranges
from known names such as Sara Hickman, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billy Joe Shaver
and Terri Hendrix to obscure acts such as Chris Davies, Jay Johnson and
Jeanie Perkins. There's nothing here you couldn't find on the artists' own
albums, but it's an affecting gathering of songs nonetheless."

CD review by Rebecca Lewis from the new issue of dallasmusic.com:

Moments of Grace is a compilation CD with songs from some old and new
friends of A.R.T.S for People, all of whom generously donated a track for
the benefit of Metroplex residents. A.R.T.S. (Artistic, Recreational,
Therapeutic Services) for People is a Dallas-based organization, founded in
1985, that reaches 60,000 children and adults each year with their special
blend of healing through the arts. The group does a lot of pro bono and
grant work, and proceeds from the sale of this CD help will raise more
money for their programs. Notably, Moments of Grace was recently the
featured CD on "90.1 at Night" on KERA radio.
Moments of Grace moves in stages. Tom Geddie, the Executive
Director of A.R.T.S. for People, describes the CD as having three 'acts.'
Act One is "The Premise, and then the Hard Times." The first time I
listened to the CD, I got stuck deep in the hard times with Rick Yost's
"New Orleans in the Rain." But there are two more acts, and "The First
Steps Toward Recovery" and "Action, and Rewards" held out the promise of
better luck ahead. They may call this CD a folk eclectic mix, but Act One
is pure blues.
Actually, it was just that one song that has the feel of the blues.
The first song, "Moment of Grace," by Sara Hickman is not that bluesy - it
is all folk; singer/songwriter at its best. Hickman has one of those
throaty voices that makes a soprano feel like a screeching bird. It is a
long song, too; it goes on for 7 minutes, but it doesn't feel that way.
Second on the CD is Chris Davies, with a completely different sound from
Hickman Her voice reminds me of someone, but I just can't put my finger on
who it is - it is so familiar and so unique all at the same time...
After you get past "New Orleans in the Rain," it is on to Ray Wylie
Hubbard, a local favorite, and the Last Train to Amsterdam. Lisa Markley is
up next with a "3-Legged Dog" and then Jay Johnson has a thirteen-minute
long change of pace. We have entered Act Two. The middle part of Johnson's
song is so quiet that you swear that it's two separate songs. On this other
side of the road is Tina Marzola with Separate Shores. I like Tina a lot
and she is extremely talented, but her performance is a lot more meaningful
live and in person.
Terri Hendrix is up next with "Moon on the Water" - this is one of
the best tracks of the thirteen on 'Moments of Grace.' It hardly leaves you
prepared for Kevin Deal, though, with his Christmas song, One Good Ride; it
just comes out of nowhere. Jeanie Perkins and her unique voice are "The
Artist," and the Ackermans are next with their special blend of appealing
down-home country sound, singing about Love and Good Karma. The CD
concludes with Annie Benjamin and Billy Joe Shaver, both of whom were too
much for my city ears. Shaver's song is only a minute ten seconds long,
though, hardly enough of a song to judge an artist by in all fairness.
A.R.T.S. for People is a unique program. Their therapists and
artists provide nearly 300 hours per month of interactive programs and
performances for audiences at Dallas-area healthcare facilities and
community agencies like schools, shelters, hospitals, and retirement homes.
It is their belief that the creative process helps individuals develop and
cope with difficult issues, as well as just helping people share their
feelings. Working in groups of 20-30, the therapists, artists, and
volunteers use music, drama, creative movement, fine art, dance, and
storytelling to make their clients feel free to interact with others and
express themselves freely.

To order this CD and help others, go to the A.R.T.S. for People web site at
http://www.artsforpeople.org or call 214-841-9200.

One of the best things about having a cd burner is you can
make "greatest hits" cd's for yer self from the artists existing
catalogue. I'd like to hear from you guys what you'd put on the 80
min cd. I'll keep my opinions to myself ...for now. I've been a

I got introduced to Sara through Domestic Science Club, so I'd want to
include one of the Sara tracks from the first DSC CD. I'm torn between the
wacky Kayaking, or the seductively subversive Sweet Tooth.

Other than that, though, I'd be pretty clueless. Most of the songs I and
the kids heard at Sara's great Fort Worth coffeehouse show (which I rudely
failed to report to this list -- shame on me!) were new to me. And wonderful!

I would also start with DSC--- either Hard Working Man or Kayaking and
definately Peaches and Cream. Then I would go thru all the others and pick and
chose---

But I also really like the kiddie things--- I find that after listening to
these that I actually am humming them to myself--- how weird is that!!

Did anyone make it to the Club DADA Kids show? I tried but had "family"
commitments out of town.

I used my cd burner to create 5 disks, with every Sara song in

Gene

Great idea! I've used my (non-pc, part of my stereo system) CD
burner to make a lot of cd compilations - especially of tunes that
I've seen her play live.
My favorite thing is to remember the songs she played at a show
and make a CD of those songs in that order. Of course that means
either writing down (or not drinking enough to lose the memorized
song list %-P) all of the songs during a set. The last 2 St. Louis
shows I've done this and it's a great way to remember the songs. And
I've brought 8-9 friends along to the shows, and a couple of them
have wanted copies of these.
There are a few missing things - like when she sang the Star
Spangled Banner one year, or when she sang Happy Birthday this year,
that I don't have, but they're pretty close nonetheless.
This is one reason it's great to have people post set lists on
this newsgroup!

One other thing that a stereo-based CD burner can do much easier
than a PC one is to make a CD from something that I only have on
cassette or video tape...this doesn't happen that often, but when it
does, it's very handy and surprising in terms of sound quality.
Better than I would have expected, and less "tape hiss" than what I
would have thought.

Another thing I've done is make "categories" of my
"Saraphanalia". You know, "Silly Fun Rock" - stuff like Kayaking,
Take Whatever I can get, Bowl Full Of Stars, things like that.
There's the "Acousticity" one highlighting the songs that she plays
extra-special acoustic guitar on - Train Song, Aurora, In The Fields,
etc. There's "Somber Sara" with the slower, more introspective
things like Shadowboxing, Song for My Father, Woman Waiting to
Happen, etc. Not to put these songs into a categorical box, but to
make CD's to fit whatever mood I'm wanting to embrace that day.

And finally, I've done the same kind of thing that Gene has done,
but especially for on the CD player on my boat. That way, I never
will lose an original-the only thing in the truck or the boat are
copies, so that if a) somebody gets slippery fingers on the water, or
b) the truck gets broken into (eep!) then I haven't lost anything
that's not replaceable (i.e. hard-to-find older CDs).

Thanks again for starting a great message thread.

I would have to agree. I would start with several off
the first DSC CD, you can't just pick one. Hard
Working Man or Sweet Tooth are right up there at the
top. Kayaking too, but it's been played to "burn
out," but I still like their sound effects! I guess
my all time favorites are "Eye of the Storm" from
Necessary Angels" and "Time of Inconvenience."
I've been a Sara fan since Shortstop, when I was
working at Elektra records and had the pleasure of
helping promote her, and then later on, meeting her in
person and working promoting her live shows. My
favorite shows were at Caravan of Dreams.
I have Spiritual Appliances but haven't got Newborn
yet. but after hearing some many positive comments,
I guess I"m going to have to add that to my collection
too!

I have done it! It's not a greatest hits compilation,
but more of a collection of tracks that are not on her
'regular' releases. My compilation CD looks like this:
  (can't remember the order)

"Salvadore" from the Wyndam Hill Legacy CD
"Hello This is Your Heart" from Elektra's Rubiat CD
"This Heart" from KGSR Vol 1
"Eye of the Storm" from KGSR Vol 2
"Valentines Day" from Healing Hearts 2
"Simply" from Mountain Stage Vol 2
(another song) from Mountain Stage Vol ??
"The Dakota" from Big League Babe Vol 2
   "Blue Eyes" from Arachnophobia soundtrack
"This Heart" from Colin Boyd's Juliet CD
(three tracks) from Broken Wings Can Fly
"Just One Race" from the Susan G. Komen Foundation CD
all of the tracks from the "Ready To Pop" cassette

   Fun Fun Fun!!!!

I've designed my CD as if we still had records with a Side one and a side two.
The rules were no more than 80 minutes of music. I didn't include DSC songs
because
in my mind, a Sara Hickman Greatest Hits would only include solo songs. (That's
just
my opinion.

Here we go..

Side One
Last Night was a big Rain 3:30:00
Life 4:02:00
Too Fast 3:56:00
Take Whatever I can Get 4:12:00
500X (The Train Song) 5:17:00
Eye of the Storm 6:15:00
If we Sent our Hearts over Now 4:57:00
Just one Race 3:46:00
Simply 3:03:00

Side Two
Reserved for the One I Love (Newborn) 3:01:00
I Wear the Crown 4:40:00
Edward 3:57:00
Room of One's Own 5:28:00
Take me With You 4:11:00
Place where the Garage Used to Stand 4:06:00
The Very Thing 4:38:00
This Heart (Newborn version) 4:50:00
We are each other's Angels (Newborn) 5:20:00

Total Time - 79:09:00

Last Night is one of my favorite songs and I wanted to start the collection off
with something energetic.
Life is another fast, peppy song to keep us moving. Too Fast has my favorite
Sara line in it (I'm responsible
for turning popsicles green) so it had to make the cut. Take whatever I can
get is also peppy and shows Sara's
sense of humor. Sara used to play the Train Song and then Eye of the storm
right after each other, the end of Train
would always blend to the beginning of Storm. I still think it's a kick ass way
to combine the songs so I've done that
here. Sent our Hearts show's Sara's socially aware side and it's a good song.
Just one Race is such an
inspirational song, my wife has it on a tape each time she's running a Marathon.
It had to go on this Cd.
I'd end the first side with Simply. I know many of you would end the CD with
that song but I think Angels is the
only way to end a Greatest Hits collection. So I compromised and had it finish
"side 1."

Side two starts out sort of quiet with reserved. There are many versions of the
song but I love Sara's vocals
and simple arrangement on this one. Crown shows Sara's sense of humor as well.
Edward is a wonderful love song.
Room of One's Own and Take me with you are what I call the "Grandparent's
songs." They both speak to me emotionally
and I always think of them together. After the two sad songs, I wanted to
lighten things up by going with the
Garage Song. When my son was little it was his favorite Sara song. Today he's
into Creed, Kidd Rock, etc but
he still has a place in his heart for Sara's music. The Very Thing is a great
love song and since Linda and I have
a soft spot in our heart for Sandy, this makes the cut. This Heart is another
great love song and I picked Newborn's version for the same reason as before.
And I'd end the CD with Angels. I love the way Sara sings this one and in my
opinion a great way to end the CD.

So what do you think?

Keep Hope Alive,

Jesse
