Sara Hickman eNewsLetter January 8, 2002
--------------------------------------------------------
DIRECT FROM THE SUPER PAL UNIVERSE IT'S SARA HICKMAN!!!

Hello, Dear Ones!!!

Happiest of Years to you all...Let's hope it's a good one...without any
fears...Let me start the new year by saying:
Thank you to each and every one of you.
Thank you all for the love and support and enthusiasm you bring to my world
and my music.
Here is a hug. Oops, I hope I didn't squeeze you too tight. Next time I see
you at a show, redeem your cyber-hug for the real thing.

HERE'S SOME NEWS:
-----------------------------------------
I'm not sure what time it is here at Super Pal Headquarters, but I know it is
very, very late because everyone in the office is asleep, snoring away,
except for me. BUT I can not sleep because tonight was the last night of
recording my new album of LOVE SONGS!!! I am REALLY REALLY REALLY
FANTASTICALLY excited about sharing love with you...some of the songs are by
me, some are by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Crowded House, Joni Mitchell, Jennifer
Warrens, Nat King Cole...oh, yes, THIS IS THE ONE TO SHARE WITH your honey.
If you don't have a honey, buy this record and listen to it for one entire
week, every day(!) and at the end of the week you will be glowing from so
much Sara-love that you will attract that lover of your dreams.
I am not kidding.

This CD (I was going to call it "Faithful Heart," but now I think I will be
calling it "Songs to Love By") will be available on FEBRUARY 15 at the
Lakewood Theatre in Dallas, Tx...I'll be having my annual Valentine's Concert
there...and let me just say, please please come to this concert. Do I ever
beg? Hmm? No. But now I am begging. I am begging you to come to this show
because you will not be disappointed and you should spoil yourself in the
HUGE LOVE GOO that envelops every single soul at the show. Not only is the
theatre a vintage 1920's style Vaudevillian/Art Deco extravaganza, but the
sheer magic and depth of love at these shows is UNBELIEVABLE. Again, I am not
kidding.

Ok. So maybe you can't come to the show, but you need the love. You can order
the love cd from the Connextion.com - (
http://www.theconnextion.com/index.cfm?ArtistID=20&NoFrame=Yes)....
Those people do not fool around and they know how fragile hearts can be so
they will ship your love to you ASAP!!! Or you can buy it from me at shows in
the future....

Whew!
-----------
Now...I have something else to mention! On the re-release of the Domestic
Science CD (the first one we made), I inadvertently put that there were 8
songs on the cd liner notes but there are really 10!!!
Once again, being a young, fresh label, you benefit from my mistakes by
ending up with a collectible (well, a girl can dream, can't she?)
---------
Lastly...
Lastly, I have just finished filling all the CD orders that came in over the
holidays...and I realized I had forgotten to ask for help with S & H on
orders...in the future, would y'all mind sending $2 per CD for the S & H? I
have to keep the twelve kids and 5 cats in shoes. Plus, my hair is a mess.

Ok, sending more enthusiasm than I know what to do with...

From the Super Pal Universe Headquarters,
Your friend, and mine,
Sara Hickman

I know Sara is totally busy all the time, slaving away for we, her beloved
fans...

... but does anyone know how to find out if she might be interested in
having a benefit show for the Texas Green Party? The party is running 44
candidates in 43 Texas races, including Yours Truly, and since we don't
take corporate money, the party will need all the help it can get!

The Dallas County press release, which includes a list of statewide
candidates, can be found on the national Green Party site (second link or
so from the top, very cool!):

I seem to remember Sara performing this at a concert a few years ago. Did it

Robert, thanks for the heads-up. I was sent an attached file that
was supposed to have pix of Sara's recent concert in the Atlanta

The main thing to watch for is a filename that *looks* like a picture, but
isn't. For example:

sara.jpg is probably a picture, hopefully of Sara
sara.jpg.pif is an executable program, probably a virus!
sara.jpg.[anything] should be viewed with extreme suspicion, especially if
[anything] is .exe, .scr, .vbs...

Just remember, it's the characters after the *last* "dot" that determines
how Windows will treat the file -- as an innocuous image, or a deadly
executable.

Of course, Windows defaults to not showing extensions (that part after the
last "dot"), so that throws a wrench into the whole deal. You can change
this behavior, but it's a pain (let me know off-list if you want
hints). Thanks a lot, Mr. Gates...

... probably the best defense is to always send a note back to the sender,
saying "did you send this?"

I have a sad story. My One Flower to the Left CD (along with Newborn
and Toddler) is forever trapped in my 6 CD changer in my Toyota
Sienna van. This happened to my husband in his vehicle and the
dealership took out the changer, replaced it and never returned his
CD's. This has upset me so much I haven't even tried to bring my car
in to the dealership to have them fix it!

I can replace Newborn and Toddler. They are, in fact, on their way
to my home as I speak. But OFTTL was a one time deal and according
to Sara's website is sold out.

So, any ideas? How do I replace this CD? Does anyone have an extra
they are willing to sell?

And just why do we keep putting CD changers in our car when they keep
breaking on us?

Hi, Super Pals!

Just a bit of afternoon delight to all my friends...

A gentle reminder that I will be performing two shows at Rouse House this

And remember: you will be helping some beautiful creatures because all of the

The new cd, FAITHFUL HEART, is finished!!! It is at the pressing plant being
created RIGHT THIS MINUTE in time for my Valentine's show at the Lakewood
Theatre, Dallas, Tx on February 15... It will be available after February 11
at theconnextion.com, or at Waterloo records here in austin. Oh, and of
course, at my shows, silly me.
*******
I just received my BMI statement. This shows where my music has been played
around the world. Here's some examples:

"Bowl Full of Stars" has played on Cinemax, in Australia, and the United
Kingdom. This song is played a lot of the internet, too, and in the film
"Certain Guys"...

"I Couldn't Help Myself" still gets a lot of play radio, digital cable, the
internet, Muzak, in Canada, Great Britain, Australia, France and in some
movie theatres! Some of the other songs listed you may hear (if you hear one,
let me know cuz it just makes my DAY!!!) are: Aurora, Best of Times, Why
Don't You, Take Me With You (thank you NPR!!!), Don't Give Up, Edward,
Shadowboxing (it is in the film "Happy, Texas" but not on the soundtrack),
Two Kinds of Laughter, In the Fields, Joy, Very Thing, Time Will Tell, Woman
Waiting to Happen....the list goes on...I am always thankful when I get my
BMI statements because it makes me feel like my songs are living a life
beyond me...thank God!

Anyway, I thought you might find that interesting.
*******
Oh, for those of you who have asked...yes, I still have Christmas CDS...and,
yes, you can order them from me or theconnextion.com
*******
Here's some more dates a comin' up:

Thank you! I almost checked eBay, but I thought that no one could
possibly give up a Sara CD - especially one of only 500! I'll go
check it out.

When you find one, try what I do (assuming you have a computer & CD
writer or know someone who does...): I made CD copies of all my Sara
albums, put the songs in alphabetical order, and now I have "expendable'
CDs in my car. I have the Toyota 6-CD changer as well, which plays CD-Rs
wonderfully. I have 5 CDs jammed with Sara Songs, which leaves me 1 slot
free for lesser-quality music. :) I like to say that my car comes
standard with all the Sara options. ::grin::

Making and using backup CD copies is an excellent suggestion. I've
started doing this since my brother's truck got broken into a couple
of years ago, and they took all the CD's as well as the stereo
equipment. That opened my eyes to the fact that some cd's may only
be worth 15 or 20 cash dollars, but are absolutely irreplaceable,
whether they are out of print or a limited-release disc.

I've made copies for use in my truck, and on my boat. Nothing like
having an irreplaceable CD like One Flower To The Left, and dropping
it overboard!

Please check any incoming mail for this! I received a file today
called

HAMSTER.DOC.pif

Please do not run any .PIF files you receive - these are shortcuts to
run a program in "DOS mode". DELETE any message with an attachment.
If you use Outlook, don't just open the attachment. Save it to disk
and see what it says the file name is (sometimes the extra '.pif'
part doesn't show up when previewing the message).

This is such a great suggestion and such an obvious solution! I'm
calling the Toyota dealership this week - hopefully, they will be
able to free my CD's. In the meantime, I'm still on the look out for
OFTTL...if anyone sees it on Ebay will you holler?

Hi everyone!

It has been awhile since I’ve sent one of these emails to the group list
because… well, it has been awhile since I’ve been to a Sara Hickman concert.

So, here is the concert report from the Sara Hickman Valentine’s Day concert
on the day after Valentine’s Day at the Lakewood Theater. I walked in to
hear the “Domestic Science Club: Three Women” album being played as
background music, which was nice.

Dave Little was the opening act, and, even though I don’t think he is very
funny at all, my girlfriend laughed a lot at his jokes. So did a lot of
people in the audience. I guess my opinion is the minority opinion here. I
will say that, to his credit, he told fewer jokes and sang more songs this
go around. I think this is a great thing considering how his jokes have not
changed that much over the years. I like his songs more than his stand up
routine, especially a new one called “Damn Kids” which I thought was funny.

Anyway, the concert began with some off-stage piano music. Sara rose up out
from under the stage, riding the Lakewood’s pipe organ. She sang

-My Funny Valentine

in a very sultry way. I think she may have felt an urge to play an
instrument (or anything else besides just standing and singing) on the song,
because, especially towards the end, she started to dance and act a little
goofy. Add to it that “Casablanca” was being projected onto the Lakewood’s
movie screen and you get an idea of how things got towards the end.

Then she played:

-When I Fall In Love (off the new Faithful Heart album)

-Coolness by Mistake (solo)

She stopped in the middle of the song, realizing that she had started
without the band. She then restarted the song with the band.

-Coolness by Mistake (full band)

-Chelsea Morning (a Sara Hickman home video featuring (and shot by) her
family graced the Lakewood screen)

-It’s Only Natural (a Crowded House song) Lance danced around the stage,
prompting my girlfriend to say, “He’s goofy like you.” I have no idea what
she is talking about.

-Woman Waiting to Happen

-Last Man in the Water

-Faithful Heart (I really like this song – it is worth the whole album just
for this song)

-There is No Name for Love

-Take Me With You

-I Wear the Crown (“Some Like It Hot” played in the background on this song)

-Happy in Yout Love

-I Couldn’t Help Myself

-We Are Each Other’s Angels (Mary Poppins played in the background during
this song)

For the encore:

It’s All Right (she sang it all accapella and beautiful)

All in all, it was a great evening.

Take care,

-RT

Thanks for reminding me RT, that I needed to do a show report.

Dave Little did open and he didn't have much new material. My wife and I
always disagree about him. I think he's funny but he needs to understand
that Sara has a core audience and after you've opened for her a half dozen
times, the audience will know your show. Change it up, put a new spin on
it. That said, he wasn't bad.

Sara looked incredible. She looks like a Mom dressed up (with a strapless
dress complete with new bra) and it was a very good look for her. The
backing musicians were outstanding. Will Taylor had arranged some of the
songs and he was there with his "fiddle" and I didn't catch the name of the
Cello player.

The mix was very good, I was worried since we had tickets on the front row.
I like to be up front but sometimes the speakers give us a little too much
music.

The opening with the organ was very funny. Sara used to sing My Funny
Valentine (acappella)at a restaurant called Crackers on McKinny Avenue in
Dallas. I'm not a big fan of the song but Sara's version was powerful.

When I fall in Love is a classic and Sara's version brought some thing
original to it. It fits with the other songs well and compliments her
voice.

It was a very funny moment when Sara stopped singing during Coolness by
Mistake and realized the band wasn't playing.

the Sara home movies were very funny. It was strange that when the song
ended we had more clips to watch. Sara sort of narrated the movie till it
ended.

Lance joined her on "It's only Natural." He has really developed into a
strong singer. I joked with him and Kevin (Sara's ex roommate) that soon
they will be touring as a couple. Lance and Edward suggested like Captain
and Tenille. So I suppose we need to start a fund to buy Lance a Captain's
Hat :)

The next point in the show that stands out is the story behind Last Man in
the Water. After 9/11 the idea of someone sacrificing themselves for others
is even more powerful then normal.

I agree with Robert that Faithful Heart is a great song and one I will be
playing over and over.

My wife and I were both surprised that Sara sang, "Take me with you." It's
been a while since we'd heard the song and it was emotionally hard to hear.
My wife's Dad died two years ago and her Mom is now fighting Bone Marrow
Cancer. There is a good chance, she won't be here next year. I know that
Linda's Mom misses her husband (Linda's Dad) so much. It was an emotional
few moments. Luckily the next song always makes both of us smile...

-I Wear the Crown. Linda often says that in a house full of boys (My 13
year old son, our boy dog and me) she is treated like a Queen. She does
wear the crown!

When I heard the start of "I Couldn't Help Myself" I started smiling.
Sara doesn't perform her "hit" very often. I always think of Ron Chapman (a
local Dallas DJ who at the time was very popular, still is come to think of
it on the oldies station) said that Sara was going to be huge. It didn't
work out that way because like Robert Frost's Poem, Sara took the road less
traveled.

The always powerful, "We are each other's Angels" ended the show except for
Sara's wonderful "It's all Right" as a sort of lullaby to each of us.
Linda and I were honored that she took time to hug us both at the end of the
show.

So another great evening of Sara music. Look forward to reading other
people's thoughts....

Keep Hope Alive,

Jesse

(WiseGuy note:) Now how much would you pay for that eNewsLetter?.. But, wait,
there's more!!
Sara has to do a small retraction, it seems Sara jumped the gun about...
well, here's her second eNews...
Sara Hickman eNewsLetter February 19, 2002 part two!!
---------------------
hello, kitty cats!

this is sara stopping by (again) to say i have to retract something i said in
the last email only because i was too ENTHUSIASTIC!!!

concerning the free cd and half price books, we aren't sure how that is going
to be handled yet. so, please wait...feel free to take books in to half price
books, or you can wait for another update on the status of the cd...half
price books is only making a limited amount of them and it looks like most
will go for press releases, but they are trying to figure out something
special for sara fans... which will be cool.

i apologize for any confusion this has created. i misunderstood what the cds
were going to be used for...but let me make it clear that any books you
donate definately go to children in hospitals, and that has not changed...so
you will still be touching lives, and that is all that really matters!

thank you for your patience and understanding, and i will get back to you
with more info as soon as half price books lets me know the scoop!

love,
sara

What a pleasure to read those last entries ! Almost like it used to be. I
myself simply loved this show. Sara looked WONDERFUL !! BREASTS !!!!!! I
told her that all the weight she lost she shoved my way ;-(

Dave Little-- to me is always different. Not terribly funny--- but not all that
boring either. I'd like to see her chose someone else to open but if he's her
friend it's probably a gig for life??

I too loved the home movie clips playing behind Sara as she performed. What a
lovely family !

And my feeling of Faithful Heart is that of a hymn. The chord structure was so
similar-- it will become "One of those.." that I think of when I think of my
favorite Sara songs.

And seeing Sara on her knees singing "It's alright" always blows me away... she
can sing me to sleep anytime!

Another truly great Valentine show at the Lakewood.

Barbara
