Sara Hickman eNewsLetter for August 16, 2002
---------------------------------------------

KITTYCATS!!

well, hello, there! whatcha snackin' on? if you aren't
snackin' on anything, and you happen to be in austin,
head on over to Ken's Doughnuts. I call it KEN'S ROCK
AND ROLL DOUGHNUTS, cuz they are the only ones worth
slappin' down any money over.

how are you? i've missed you. you look GREAT! honest!
have you been lifting weights? (well, you will be
after you eat those yummy doughnuts!) you know, i was
doing so well, getting trim and feeling fine, but then
i got a bit blue and started hittin' the comfort food.
but don't worry, i'll be back in my suede go-go boots
soon.
i'm going to start running again. running away, that
is, from anything snackalicious. i will be running
TOWARDS all things healthy. maybe we should all get
together and have a SARATHON to raise money for some
worthy cause!!!

so, here's where we left off last time we were
countin' down the top twenty musical moments...(by the
way, if there is a copy of all the emails i've sent
over the years, and if anyone feels like mailing them
my way, i will be happy to make that certain someone
a super sara fun kit full of stuff only FOR YOU from
ME. i want to put together a little funny book
complete with illustrations that will only be
available via this newsletter...)

so, where were we? ah, yes...we were at NUMBER 15!!!
hang on, amigos, this one is a WILD RIDE:
---
NUMBER 15 in the TOP TWENTY MUSICAL SARA HICKMAN
MOMENTS:

Symphony Square, Austin, Tx--1994.
I had just moved to Austin, and was trying to find my place in this
musical matrix. Performing on a lovely summer's eve,
I was sitting outside in a long, yellow chiffon dress,
plucking at my guitar, singing sweetly. Across from me
was a kind audience, responding with fervor and
enthusiasm. My only sadness was the fact that we were
seperated by a MOAT, complete with a running stream,
yet, thankfully, no gators. I felt like I was in
Biblical times, seated in this stone mini-ampitheatre,
the audience rising up above me on rock benches,
caressed by the gentle breezes and branches of the
swaying trees.

Suddenly, in the midst of song, my guitar stopped
working. It was completely dead. I finished singing
a capella, the spot light seemingly growning hotter, as
a friend whisked away my guitar to find another.
Alas, there was no other. Fearless, I launched into another song,
with only my voice to carry the night. As I attempted
to keep the energy level high, a giant helicopter appeared
out of no where, circling defiantly above my head in
this darkest of nights, whipping my mouth with my hair,
tormenting me with it's huge overpowering rotarized sound. I threw
my empty hands to my skirt, trying desperately not to
lose what I thought would be left of my dignity.

Ah, a lesser performer would have left the stage by
now, but not your friend and mine, Little Miss Sara.
Ooh, ooh, no. She would not give in! She had made a
commitment! She'd signed papers! People were expecting
more of the unexpected so she would give them what
they expected---more! What was a little wind and loud
noise and no guitar? Hadn't Daniel defeated the lions
with faith alone? Hadn't Sonny stood up to Cher?
Haven't some frogs somewhere in this madcap world made
it somewhere across some road?!

Thankfully, the friend returned with a new guitar, a
working guitar, a guitar that would bring comfort to
the dear girl. She sat back upon the white stool, her
valiant steed, and began what was to be her last song
for this unusual performance. But, once again, fate
was not finished twisting it's cruel tricks. It had to
throw in a pat from Mother Nature upon our dear one's
back...yes, it was time. THAT TIME. That time of the
month. As Sara sat on the stool (did I mention it was
white?), she realized, with horror, what was
happening. She realized she was on a white stool, in a
sheer yellow dress, alone, with no back up, no purse
from which to desperately peruse, no girlfriend to
ask for help, no ugly metal machine on the wall (which
wouldn't have helped..she had not a dime to her
name,) no sock upon her gentle ankle hiding an O.B.

She did what any self-respecting woman would do---She
decided to give the audience one more song.

But first, she would have her say. She said, and I
quote, for I was there: "Dear ones, whatever happens
in the next five minutes, remember that I gave my all
to you. That I love you. And I hope you will love me
in return...no matter what." The audience looked
amused, and Ms. Hickman sang a love song with all she
could muster from her breaking, embarrassed heart. She
could see the signs, she knew what was around the
emotional bend, and yet there was no going back. She
would have to arise from her steed, and bow, and hold
her head high. For there on the back of her dainty
dress was a stain the size of Mount Olympus, which she
was now going to have to climb the rest of her life in
nightmares! She grabbed her guitar as the last, aching
note escaped her ruby red lips, arose from
her seat, bowed ever-so-slowly, knowingly, trippingly,
shakingly...and began the long journey up the FLIGHT
OF STAIRS TO HER RIGHT. That's right...a very long,
straight flight of stairs, leading to a door that
seemed forever away. As our heroine walked calmly
(that was a big fat lie) to the 7,046 stairs (she
counted each one), she placed one foot in front of the
other, and walked up, up up and away to that door of
escape...but, horror of horrors, the door was LOCKED.
(I kid you not. LOCKED. LOCKED AND GLUED SHUT.
And barricaded with ropes, locks, bars...Or, at least that
is what it seemed like at the time.)

Now Ms. Hickman began to meekly knock upon the door,
as she heard the overall sound she had been waiting to hear:
the gasp of 300 people in shock. It seemed as if time
was frozen. Again, she knocked upon the door. Again,
she felt 600 eyes upon her back. Again, she found herself
silently cursing the moon, wishing she could howl like the she-wolf she
had become, but returning to reality, she began to
kick the door, growling, "Please, hello, LET ME IN!"

Finally, relief. The door opened, Sara fell inside,
begging the door to be shut behind her...and...she
landed into the arms of a local popular DJ. Mortified,
she ran to an empty green room only to find no where
to hide her bleeding, tormented soul. Until in walked
Mr. M, an Italian Bruce Springsteen fan and friend for
life, who delivered the days paper and told her to sit
upon it. He said it would be worth millions some day.
Ms. Hickman, through tears, found the humor of the
moment, and began to laugh. The full, rounded laugh of
someone who can't quite grasp what has just occurred,
but has somehow managed to find the joy in it all.

And there you have it. As I said when I first told a
much shorter version of this story to Performing
Songwriter ( in their "GIGS FROM HELL" section), I
could have done the Blues Circuit as "Bloody Waters."
I could have quit in disgrace that night, but I have
chosen to share the experience with you, my good
friends, because what is life but moving forward
through the peaks and valleys.

Sara:
Let me share with you my two favorite Sara music moments:
1. Summer 1993: Fatso's in Arlington. I was with a group of friends who were
setting me up with a young lady also attending the concert. Somewhere in the
middle, someone in the audience set off a mace canister, clearing out the room.
My friends decided to call it a night, leaving the lady and me alone. We went
back in to enjoy the rest of the show. You sang "I Think I Love You," changing
the words to "I Think You Maced Me." After the show, the girl and I went to Putt
Putt, we had our first kiss, and were together six months. (Not exactly happily
ever after, but not bad.)
Summer 2000: Waldorf School in Austin. My little girl hanging out with your
little girl, singing all the songs in a nice, small crowd of good folks. To my
daughter Hope, you are still just "Lily's Mommy." We had actually run into you
and Lily (and maybe your Dad) a couple of years earlier at Bombay Grill in
Austin. Lily chatted to Hope (it was before Hope was talking I think) and you
and Lily kind of danced around the restaurant. It was only later that I figured
out for sure that that was you. It had been a few years since I'd seen you.
I've been going to your shows now since the late 80s, and you have given me many
happy moments. Thank you.

Don't y'all think it would be kinda neat to make Sara our OWN "Sarabook"? We
could each do a page with pics, momentoes, personal sayings, fav. memories.
etc??? I could mail everyone a page for them to do......once completed, mail
back to me, I will put in a scrapbook and we could mail it to her!! Everyone
that does a 'page' could sign his / hers name on the bottom...you all know Sara
would love that!!!

Roger.....email and tell me if this is a good idea or not!!! And you too, Cris.
Just thought it might be *fun* for all of us!!!!!

One of my favortite Sara moments occured at a Pocekt Sandwich Theater
concert where she improvised a song about two tipsy audience members,
Kenneth and his brother Jimbo.

Typical lyrics:

"It's Kenneth and Jimbo...
Kenneth and Jimbo...
They've come to see the Sara Hickman show!
Kenneth and Jimbo...
Kenneth and Jimbo...
They've come to see the Sara Hickman show!"

There was one verse where she sang about Kenneth's shirt being unbuttoned
all the way down to the hairy mid-chest and she started laughing so hard she
couldn't finish it.

shows, including the infamous Sara Kiss onstage at the Blue Door that I could
provide. So Holly...are you going to coordinate this effort?

Sorry, Holly, I missed the "send it back to me" part of your previous message...

One of my favorite (recent) moments was in Hunt, TX, earlier this year. We had
a diverse group of folks from across the US, Canada and even Costa Rica. One
lady (Judy) from Canada had on a pair of glasses that were...unusual to say the
least. When Sara noticed Judy, she stopped and asked "Girl, what's up with
those glasses?!! It looks like you have them on upside down!" Of course, that
was followed with a chorus of laughter (we all had thought the same thing but
never dared mention it). Then Sara commented on Judy's shirt and asked what
kind of material it was, saying it looked like velvet but it was too hot to be
wearing velvet. Judy replied that the material was chenille to which Sara
commented "Oh, the poor woman's velvet!" which met with tons of laughter. So
Sara decided to re-name Judy "Chenille", saying she looked more like a Chenille
than a Judy, especially in those glasses. I think at that point, Sara
introduced "Woman Waiting to Happen" and sent it out to "Chenille". I saw
Judy/Chenille a couple of weeks ago in Kansas City. Everyone was still calling
her Chenille.

I think the best way is for me to mail everyone a page...or however many people
want. Then y'all can mail it back to me. I'll put it all together. I can make

everyone can see what it looks like completed!!

a super sara fun kit full of stuff only FOR YOU from
ME. i want to put together a little funny book
complete with illustrations that will only be
available via this newsletter...)

so, where were we? ah, yes...we were at NUMBER 15!!!
hang on, amigos, this one is a WILD RIDE:
---
NUMBER 15 in the TOP TWENTY MUSICAL SARA HICKMAN

Please count me in as someone to send pages to. I have a couple of
good stories, one involving a road trip to Wichita to see not only
Sara play, but Robin Macy (of DSC) with her band. Sara and Robin
played a couple of DSC tunes together, but that story will have to
wait for another message.

The one I wanted to tell here is one I've shared before, about a show
here in STL back in April of 2001. Here's a copy of an e-mail I sent
to a friend describing the night, 2 nights before my 40th birthday:

Hey, how are ya! Well, I have quite a story to tell if you have a
  minute...

OK, so Tuesday (the 10th) is my 40th birthday, so for a little
celebration we all went out to the Longhorn steakhouse, and then
cross the street to the Generations Nightclub to see Sara Hickman
play (the same place where we saw her last year). Amy, Lisa, Linda,
Ron, Stephen, Jill, Bill and Angie were all there. Some of them gave
me the standard black over-the-hill gag gifts while we were at the
restaurant. And, sneaky Lisa and Linda had made arrangements with
the nightclub manager to store away back in a refrigerator a platter
of german chocolate cupcakes. And of course, we pretty much drank
from 5:00 on. Sara put on a good show again, telling a lot of funny
stories and doing her songs like she always does - acoustic guitar
and a mike, that's it. But the best was near the end of the
show - after she had played for about an hour and a half, the bar
owner came up and gave her a little slip of paper. She said, "OK, I
have a request from someone. Jim Gilbert, where are you? Come on up
here!"
So, I played along, figuring one of my goofy friends asked her to
sing me happy birthday. That would have been cool enough. But when
I got up there, she said "Hey, I know you!", gave me one of her
trademarked SaraHugs, and decided to sing me happy birthday all
right, but first she said, "I forget - are you married? No? So
it's OK then" - and proceeded to sing happy birthday in the same
mannerism that Marilyn Monroe sang happy birthday to John F
Kennedy. - you know, all breathy and lovy-dovy- Happy
(sigh) birthday (deep sigh), dear, Jiiiim (breathy sigh) ...and she
let her hands do the walking! It was all I could do to stop laughing -
it was quite a riot! It seemed to last both forever and just one
second - if you know what I mean. It was sooo special! Later, Lisa
and Linda said, "we just asked her to sing happy birthday, we had no
idea she'd do it that way!" How hilarious...and somebody in the
crowd was taking pictures and he said he'd send me one of her singing
and grabbing all over me on the stage...
SO, needless to say, I won't forget that anytime soon!

Sad to say, I never heard from the guy who took pictures. So all I
have from that night is memories! I have a few pictures of me with a
very pregnant Sara in her 2000 show, a few months before she had
Iolana...I'd be glad to post those.

Oh my gosh that is the funniest story. I know how you feel about
pictures...sort of...she sang I Couldn't Help Myself for me at the last
Valentines show...of course I was snapping away so I could at least say "yep,
there she is! singing a song for me!" (she did say this is for Holly and a few
other things) and of course they didn't turn out....too far away!!

Those that want to participate in the SaraLoo scrapbook, don't forget to send me
your address to hclement@...

Hopefully we can have the whole thing finished in time for Christmas.

Hey, Jeff, try to persuade Sara into letting you record this show for those of
us who can't make it. Kind of a "Ready to Pop, Vol. 2" as it were. I'll be the
first to send my $$.

Thanks, Holly. That surprises me... If and when you decide to give it another
shot, let me know.

BTW: The printer is working again. I hope to finish that "project" this week
and get it in the mail to you.

Hello Everyone,

I like the scrapbook idea. I am sorry I have been slow to respond.

I also need some help. I have been offered the chance to review Faithful
Heart for an online magazine.

I would love to hear any input you may have about the CD. You may have
something to say I haven't thought of. I have a couple of weeks to put it
together, but a quick reply would help. Random thoughts are fine. I don't
intend to steal stuff from you, but as many different perspectives as
possible may help me put the CD in its best possible light.

Thanks in adavance.

Curtis

THE SCRAPBOOK IS NOW A GO. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SEND ADDRESSES SO I CAN MAIL
PAGES. I ONLY HAVE 3 ADDRESSES SO FAR.

'Happy In Your Love' (or whatever she calls it, don't have the cd in front of
me!!) is my very favorite. Such a sweet, cute, 'fun' song to share with someone
you love.

I am sure all of you got the 'saranote' about NO performances in 2003....I think
that will get the ball rolling in the scrapbook....and you can all always email
me stuff and I will do a page for you....please send jpeg pics, and any text in
pagemaker 6.5 or word.

Sara Hickman eNewsLetter for September 5, 2002
****************************************

hi, kitty cats...

here's a brief little newsletter from me to you...

i've been working on a series of paintings for an
exhibition in early november. if you would like to
receive a real invite in a real mailbox, just send
your address to: marla@... and you will
have one sent to you at home/work! just like the old
days. hooray!

the new martha stewart baby has arrived! yes, i am on
her first collection of baby music, entitled
"playtime"...included on the cd are: nickel creek, dan
zanes, jane siberry, elvis costello, keb mo, carly
simon and james taylor, sara hickman (hey! that's me!
on a cd with elvis and carly simon and james taylor!
cool!), luka bloom, nanci griffith and harry
belafonte! wow!

the first shipment of goods went over to romania. (you
may remember last fall i asked for items to be sent to
me so i could send them to a group of homes in romania
that help orphaned children.) well, i couldn't send
the stuff last year because of september 11 and
mailing restrictions. but, that has finally
changed...so the tanner romania mission is receiving
diapers, clothing, toys, diaper pins, bandaids, you
name it. if you would like to help out, feel free to
write to sandi tanner and visit their site at :

www.tannerromaniamission.ro

i'm still planning on going next summer. if you are
interested in volunteering (this would be a life
changing comittment), you can email sandi at:

volunteer.org.nz/romania/

to find out more.

they are in real need of cloth diapers and diaper pins
(they have no trash facility...they would have to burn
disposable diapers, thus they use cloth). if you'd
like to send some over, you can mail it OVERLAND (not
air mail...you'll find it is very expensive to mail
things to romania!) to the address on their site.

lastly, i taped out twelve feet of bubble wrap across
the kitchen floor so our two year old could run across
it. let me just say, if you are looking for fun, this
is a great past-time!

lots of love,
sara

Sara Hickman Super SECRET Special Edition! eNewsLetter
-September 3, 2002
------------------------------

This email is NOT from Sara, but from her lowly eMailingList WiseGuy and
Sara-SuperFan Holly Clement. Sara isn't even receiving this email, 'cause its
a BIG SECRET! <shhhhh!>> It's like an addendum to her eNewsLetter she just
sent.... however....

Really! It's a SECRET from Sara... so nobody tell her about it!
(you know who you are! ;o) )

Here's the deal...

Since Sara is planning on NOT having any shows in 2003, (Although just
between you and me, she's been approached for some charitable events for ne
xt year ALREADY!) Holly wants to create a SCRAPBOOK to give to Sara Hickman
as a present and she needs your help in creating it!

She wants as many as possible Sara fans to contribute at least ONE page
-front and back (more is okay, too).

This page can be anything that, well, can fit on a scrapbook page... like a
written story of meeting Sara... or what a particular song means to you...
pictures, set lists, old Sara ticket stubs... that kind of thing. Y'know..
scrapbooky stuff!

Holly will SEND YOU a page to decorate yourself, or you can SEND HER stuff
and she'll do the work composing YOUR page in the Sara Hickman Scrapbook.

Holly wants "to make this a ‘special’ book for Mizz Sara-- For her to know
that her fans have loved her through everything, and also….when she comes
BACK, we will still be here, waiting for her."

For more information contact Holly Clement at a special email address she
adopted just for this Scrapbook Project:

bookforsara@...
or:
HollyannClement@...

Here's some more info:
1. The scrapbook is a "Creative Memories" and the pages are 12"x12"
2. Holly needs your address by SEPTEMBER 15 so she can send y'all a page (or
more!) to decorate. NOW is a good time to send her an email (at:
bookforsara@... )
3. Deadline for completed pages is OCTOBER 15. The plan is for Holly to
present the Scrapbook to Sara at Sara and her father's Opening Night Art
exhibit (November 2) in Denison, Texas
4. Holly might need your mailing address (if she sends you a page) and you
will need HER mailing address -for all that scrapbooky stuff YOU'RE gonna
send her ;o)
5. And.. it's a SECRET! So, no telling! ;o)

TCU told me she is the last to play that day...i'll see if i can find the email.
i am guessing 4:30? i do know that it is at the frog fountain in front of the
student center. they also told me she is singing the national anthem at a
volleyball game there at 7:30 but that is all they said about that.

Hey, everyone!

I just got something that I thought might be of interest to some of you. I
found a copy of "Two Kinds of Laughter" that contained a second disc of three
radio edits; "Optimistic Fool" (4:37), "Take Whatever I Can Get" (4:14), and "I
Wear the Crown" (3:57). The really interesting thing (to me, anyway) is the
different lyric for "Optimistic Fool". The lyrics contain the line "...we
walked into a fired up future..." instead of the more "colorful" word that Sara
uses on the album version. Does anyone know the story on this?

Another thing: Does anyone know anything about Sara's performance in Phoenix on
November 23rd? It's part of a conference and I'm not sure if the public is
invited to the show or not. I e-mailed the conference host and have not
received a reply. I want to attend but Phoenix is 6 hours from here and I don't
want to make that drive and not be able to see her. If anyone has info, I'd
love to hear from them.

Thanks!

Roger

Roger,

You got a radio promotional copy of the CD. Cool for you! The record
company didn't think the more colorful version could get airplay, so they had
her edit the lyric.

I hope all is well with everyone.

Curtis
