Wow! Ya'll missed a good one. Without a doubt the best Sara show I have
ever heard. Songs by Frank Zappa, John Denver, The Partridge Family (TWO of
'em!!!), John Lennon, Streisand, any Manny Others. She came VERY close to
delivering the '70's show I had mentioned before, with a medley of songs
that she used to sing when she was just starting out. I had my doubts about
the strings, but I was dead wrong. This show was something special.

BTW, the pumpkin on the table really works. Got to meet the very nice
Signor Turnage after the show, and I got a kiss on the cheek from Punky
while the Will Taylor quartet (they have a brand new name, which escapes me
at the moment) played a song. Plus, Kristen officially deemed my license
plates "Cool!".

Happy Fourth of July, ya'll!!!

Hi all!

>Wow! Ya'll missed a good one. Without a doubt the best Sara show I have
>ever heard.

Boy howdy!

I was in Houston visiting a friend for the 4th and it turns out he lives
about 2 blocks from the Mucky Duck. After checking the pub menu on the MD's
web site, my friend and I decided to skip the 8:00 show and eat at Joe's
Crab Shack (where they sell disposable toothbrushes in the men's bathroom).

I told my friend ahead of time that Sara was in a parade in Austin that
morning and was doing two shows that evening so she would be really tired by
the time we got around to watching her. "So you're saying she won't be very
good tonight?"
"No, I'm saying that you're going to be in for the show of your life!"

The opening band was called 'Strings Attached' (formerly the Will Taylor
Quartet) and the opening song was very good, except for one part where they
paused in the middle of the song, and everyone began to clap, not realizing
that the song was not finished.

Then Sara came to the stage to sing with 'Strings Attached'.

The song list is as follows (more or less):

-It's All Right, It's Ok

-Sister and Sam (the strings did this really cool thing on the chicken's
peck line)

Sara's string broke. She complained about her 'bad string karma' that
evening. The various members of 'Strings...' made jokes about burning
classical instruments. Kirsten DeWitt joined everyone on the stage.

-Joy

At this point, Sara saw me from the stage, smiled and said 'Hey GaMookie!'
My friend asked me why she calls me 'Kabuki'.

-Coolness by Mistake

-Satin Sheets for Alice

Sara broke into an improvisational Spanish-sounding hot latin number. I
could not understand any of the lyrics, but it was excellent! This would
prove to be the first of many improvisations over the course of the show.

-A Sting song I did not recognize (my friend says the name is 'Tears From a
Star')

-Edward (mixed in with 'Someday My Prince will Come')

Lance/Edward came to the stage, they sing together for one song.

-Take Me With You

-Comets Over Costa Rica

She introduced the band members. 'Strings Attached' breaks into a rendition
of 'Skylife' by David Balachrishna (sp?)

Sara told a Donny Osmond cupcake story which I missed because I had to go to
the bathroom.

-Sing along of 'Cum by ya', 'He's got the whole world in his hands', and
'Take me Home, Country Roads'

-Come on, Get Happy

-We are Each Other's Angels

-Everything's Red

(encore)

-I Wish... (a new song, and Sara did not know all the words)

A big medly of songs, about half of which I recognized

-Dreamboat Annie/Crazy on You (? - I assume it is a 'Heart' song)/Happy
Together/Heart of Glass/Orange Blossom Special (this was in response to an
audience request for 'Cotton-Eyed Joe')/Er es Tu (? - a Spanish song I did
not recognize)/Another song I did not recognize (sample line: "look at me,
I'm just like you")/Another song I did not recognize (sample line: "I saw my
reflection in snow-covered hills")

-Kirsten deWitt sang 'Eidleweiss'

-A John Denver song I did not recognize (sample line: "Joy was just a thing
he was raised on/Love was just a way to live and die")

Sara did a presidential acceptance speech in which she promised if elected
president, she would name her first son 'Mucky' after the Mucky Duck.

-Another song I did not recognize, this time sung in a high-pitched,
inarticulate, and squeaky voice. It sounded like she was singing 'Chuck in
Love' but I only understood about one word out of ten.

-A Barbara Streisand impersonation singing a song I did not recognize, but I
tihnk the name was 'One Love' (sample line: "Love that is said by two, I've
found you")

-I Think I Love You

'Strings Attached' played Frank Zappa's 'Peaches and Regalia'

-Yesterday

-A snippit of 'Maniac' from Flashdance

-A snippit of 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart' by the Bee Gees

-Another song I did not know (sample line: "How I wish you were here/We're
two lost souls in a little fish bowl/I wish you were here")

-Happy Xmas (War is Over)

-Last Night Was a Big Rain

By this point, Sara was near-delirious from exhaustion, and the show ended.

>BTW, the pumpkin on the table really works. Got to meet the very nice
>Signor Turnage after the show.

And I got to meet the incredibly pleasant Mr. Rich. No kisses for me,
though, although Sara asked me where my girlfriend was. I guess my face told
her that I was currently single because she immediately apologized. I told
her that I was going to the movies next week with a certain lady and I was
hoping that she would soon become a special lady, and that seemed to satisfy
Sara. She told me next week's show in Dallas would be great and I should
come. I told her I was already there.

Then I went to my friends futon and promptly lapsed into sleep.

>Happy Fourth of July, ya'll!!!

Very much the same wishes here!

Take care,

-RT

Thanks for the info. Sounded like a great show. I have no clue about
Sara's song list except the one song sounded like a Stevie Nicks
song from the lyrics. It could have been "Landslide" If you see my
reflection in the snow covered hills , the landslide will bring it
down. I think it is about changes. I think maybe that other
Streisand tune sounded like Evergreen.. accordng to the lyrics. You
are pretty good to remember the lyrics. ..I already know what you all
think about country music people, but I am going to Columbus Ohio
with my friends to see Kathy Mattea at an outdoor show with the
symphony. I mainly go now to see my friends, and talk to the guitar
player Bill Cooley. However, i enjoy the symphony with its string
arrangements on a few of her tunes.

"How I wish you were here/We're
two lost souls in a little fish bowl/I wish you were here")

Robert, this sounds like "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, from the album
of the same name. Must have been interesting hearing Sara do Pink.

While the rest of you were basking at the MD with Sara, I did manage to take
in some good music here in Southern New Mexico for a change. The Bus Boys
played a free (city sponsored) concert on the 4th with War and a blues
singer named Otis Taylor. I have been waiting for 20 years to see the Bus
Boys. Glad to see they reformed and are attempting a come-back. They
sounded GREAT! Unfortunately, there was a small crowd and only one other
person (besides me) seemed to know any of the songs. By the end of the
show, the audience was really getting into the Boys.

Hope all had a safe 4th.

entire musical genre. There are some worthwhile CW acts out there. (I just

What an incredible show it must have been! How could one person sing that
many songs...?

My 8-year-old daughter absolutely loves "Country Roads", and she was
facinated by Sara's childhood recording of "Grandma's Feather Bed" on
"Misfits". Any ideas whether she'd like a Sara Hickman concert? She's
pretty grown-up for her age, so I think she can handle the occasional
off-color remark (considering what she reports goes on at school...)

Did she give this Partridge Family ditty the sort of "twist" that she gave
to "I Think I Love You"?

Even though I don't think I'll have the available filthy lucre, when and
where is this week's Dallas show?

I see kids at Sara concerts from time to time. I think the only thing you
might want to worry about is if Dave Little opens for her.

No, it was pretty straight forward, although I think she forgot the words

Taste of Dallas at the West End. Sara will be playing Sunday evening at
7:30p, on the Citistage. Little Jack Melody will play on the main stage at
6p, and I recommend that show.

Take care!

Hey, RT
I actually have a clue where you guys are talking about regarding
that Dallas show. ...I do not know if the fellows care too much about
Dan Fogelberg, as I do, but I am soooo jealous of anyone who

the heart throb of my childhood, even though I never knew what he
looked like, except from old Album covers, until like 1985. I
hope those who can, will go to that show to see Sara. Did you
guys know Fogelberg had a bad accident, tearing his tendon in a

Yes, guys, I'm still around, just haven't really had to much to add to all
the great descriptiveness from the Mucky Duck show--someday, somehow, I will
get there!!
Everyone should enjoy the Taste of Dallas--is there really as much
food there as it sounds?
And is there any news yet on the release of Newborn?

I've been looking into some of the other artists that I've gotten hooked up
with lately and actually ran across the Skip Ewing site that I didn't know
existed. I know there is this animosity between the Nashville sound and the
Texas artists--but really, I find good in both. Sometimes I might mention
things about the Nashville people that I like that I know must annoy some ot
ya'll--but I guess you will just have to (haha) deal with it!
I really truly still love and enjoy Sara--Valentine's 2000 I will
even try to find something pumpkinish to wear--yes, come hell or high water I
will be there!!
Gamookie---you must have been thrilled when Sara acknowleged you from
the stage!! It must be a really great feeling to be on a sort of human-like
level with her--as with all of you "charter-member" friends. Consider
yourselves blessed.
I guess I really just need another Sara fixx to get me back to the
level I was a while back---one of the disadvantages to being planted here in
Florida where NOBODY ever comes--except--YES--next Friday is my Ann and Nancy
Wilson concert and I've waited for that forever! They are coming out with a
new acoustic CD-- I've followed them thru their Heart days as well as the
Lovemonger years--- I know they'll be playing in Ft Worth in August--
Well, just wanted to pop in and say hey--- HEY

Well its funny to finally de-lurk on this list and post about another
band, but I have to say that it is good news that the Bus Boys are back
and playing again. I saw them the first time around, (eeek, almost 20
years ago). They put on a great show then and I'll be on the lookout
for them now.

Hello,

I have been lurking for a while, and enjoying your posts. The following is a
post I just made to Sara's American Online Board.

I have good reason to pop on. I got to hear something last week, that was
REALLY FANTASTIC.

You know I am a big fan of Sara's, so I know you expect me to say nice
things, but I am trying to be very objective.

Having said that, here goes.

I heard "Spiritual Appliances" in it's early form last week. I have loved
each of Sara's CDs. "Equal Scary People" is the first one I heard and it is
the one that made me a big fan. In my opinion, each collection of songs has
shown a little different side of her talents, without going too far from the
qualities that made me a fan in the first place.

If I were to compare it to any one CD, it would be "Equal Scary People." All
of the songs are fresh and uniquely Sara. It has that "something" that has
made her work notable.

Among the songs we've been waiting to hear on CD are: "(Everthing's) Red,"
"Standing Ground," "I'm Not Going Anywhere,"Moment Of Grace," and "Kerosene."

"Edward" is one of the standouts of her new material. And there are a few
songs I am not sure if she wrote, but each are great.

In short, I am excited about this record. I feel lucky to have gotten a
preview, but it's really worth the wait. If you have any questions, that I
may not have covered, feel free to ask.

Golly you are going to see Ann and Nancy Wilson!!! You may want to
direct them to WV. Do you have the Nancy Wilson McCabe's CD?
Skip Ewing is an Excellent songwriter. He reminds me of alot of
people like Radney Foster and Kim Richey and Kevin Welch and Steve
Earl. They do not fit pop country radio themselves, but everyone elso
sings their songs. Kim Richey has co-written with Angelo, which may
be the same Angelo with whom Sara has co-written? Denise

CurtNick,
Will this CD be available in the Border's Stores? In West By God
Virginia they are having the Grand opening today of our first Border's ,
just right up the road from me.
I have ordered Equally Scary People after the advice from this list.
What type of instrumentation will be found on the new CD, for those
of us who are not as familar with ESP? Sorry for sounding like some
interviewer.

Howdy All,
I too have been lurking on the sidelines, enjoying the stories and chats on
Sara and wanted to a little Sara news to everyone. The current bi monthly issue
of "Performing Songwriter" features our friend SARALOO in a Martin Guitar Ad on
the back cover! It is a lovely photo taken by Todd Oldham.
The magazine is usually available in Borders and Barnes & Noble in the
Northeast. However their websight is www.performingsongwriter.com to order
direct. It is a terrific magazine for fans of good music, as well as performimg
songwriters. They did a short feature on Sara in back issue #34 (an earlier
issue featureing Sara is sold out)that featureed numerous Texas
singer-songwriters.
So when you buy your Martin, let 'em know you bought it because of the
magical sounds you heard Sara obtain from their guitars.
Best,
Joe Dougherty

Joe,
Thanks for the info on the magazine--do you have any idea of the $$ for a
years sub? I checked out the site and without getting too deep into the
ordering section--couldn't find anything relating to the cost. I'm always
looking for new "rags" to read--I've kept up my daughters subscription to
Spin after she left for school and still get Rolling Stone, too.
Denise, I will definately let you know all about my show on
Friday--no, I haven't heard that CD--I'm going with $$ in hand to get the new
CD there and hoping against hope that I'll make the meet-n-greet list--the
venue here only allows a certain select few that honor. If not, I know for a
fact that when they do the show in FT Worth at the Caravan that an autograph
will definately be mine! ( from my Plano guy of course)!
I have rewatched some of the SaraLoo videos that I was blessed to
received by some certain angel and I think the juices are again
flowing---just need new music! LALALALA...........

Newstand cost for Performing Songwriter is 4.95 .Subscription --25.95
/yr 8 issues. Two years=40.95 . Call 1800-833-7664. I like this
magazine as it cover the singer-songwriters and Indie people. Back
issues are $8.00. Supposedly the publisher, Lydia Hutchinson started
it with just her savings and help from friends like Amy Kurland who
owns the Bluebird in Nashville. It was a shoe-string operation, from
what I 've read. Now it seems oodles of people have been in it,
Eleanor McEvoy had an ad in it.
Hey, the Martin ad tells of Sara's decision to either buy the guitar
or fix up "Poor old Martha" . I can only imagine that the van
probably had some character?

Hi All, Just got home from seeing Sara at the Taste of Dallas. She was
Rockin!!!! She played a lot of songs from her new CD Spiritual Appliances. I
can't wait for that CD. I heard its great, didn't you hear that Curtis. ;o) She
had everyone with her, Kristin on vocals, Glen on base, & Paul on Drums and she
picked up a new guy on guitar. I can't remember his name but he did a great
job. Weather was good not to hot & clear skies.

I always enjoy seeing Sara. I Don't know how she plays the guitar the way she
does but WOW!! Maybe one day.

Happy Summer to All

Love,
Chris

I am sitting here writing this when guess who comes on the Radio. KERA (Public
station in Dallas) played Simply. Thank you KERA for knowing what good music is.

Denise,

I am sure you will be able to get the new CD at Borders when it comes out.
About the instrumentation, it more of a question of what is not on the CD.
Overall I would call it guitar oriented with lots of Sara's acoustic and some
rocking electric guitar work. There are also songs with strings, brass,
fiddle, hand claps, piano, a Hammond B5 organ, a sitar and a diggeredoo (I
have no idea how to spell that, but it's the low toned Australian instrument.)

Suzanne,

All I'll say about how I got to hear it is that I live in Austin, and I know
some people who know some people who can be bribed with food. I also begged
a little, well actually a lot.

Hi everyone! I'm going to add to Chris' message a little.

>Hi All, Just got home from seeing Sara at the Taste of Dallas.
>She was Rockin!!!!

Yes, indeedy! Sara was dressed in a bright floral number with black tights.
Kirsten was in a little black dress. There were men, but I did not notice
them.

>She had everyone with her, Kristin on vocals, Glen on base, & Paul on Drums
>and she picked up a new guy on guitar. I can't remember his >name but he
>did a great job.

Andy Timmons. And Sara kept saying that she hired him an hour before
starting the show. He did a very admirable job.

Here is what I have scribbled down as her setlist:

-This Way (there may have been songs before this - we arrived at the stage a
little late because the call of the funnel cake proved to be too great)

This song would mark the beginning of what was to be an evening of
microphone problems for Sara. During the song, the sound monitor on the
stage went out. After finishing, Sara remarked that 'for a while there
[during the song] we were just singing on God'.

I understand that the sound system was designed more for a loud rock concert
(which Sara admirably delivered) than a folk performance, however, the
vocals were so loud that they were often distorted just enough to make the
words unintelligible. Because Sara is such a lyrically strong musician, this
was particularly frustrating (for me) on the songs I did not know. This is
not really a complaint, just an observation.

Sara then went into

-Two Kinds of Laughter

During this song, Sara's mike went out. She stopped the song, saying "We
don't want to suck, and I think we were suckin' for a while there. I came
all the way down here from Alaska and I don't want to disappoint you." After
a few seconds, they started the song again.

-Two Kinds of Laughter (reprise)

-500X (The Train Song)

At the beginning of the instrumental jam, the DART rail cars ran behind the
stage. This was a happy coincidence, but I don't think it could have been
planned better.

-Persuit of Happiness

-Optimistic Fool

Sara used this song to whip the crowd into a frenzy, encouraging all of the
'mad' people to come up on stage and let everyone else know how mad they
were and how they were going to change the world. Sara improvised a rap, and
then ended the song.

- a new song that sounded good, although I could not discern any lyrics.
Sara whistled on this one. It was melodic.

- another new song that I liked, yet could not discern the lyrics. I think
it had the words "Look at what I found" in it.

-Comets Over Costa Rica

-another new song I liked, but did not recognize. I think some of the lyrics
were "Words burn like fantasy, and this salad seems undone." I could be
wrong.

-another new song I've heard Sara perform before, although I have no idea
what the title is. Sample lyrics are "I greet each day like this with a
kiss." It was a toe-tappin' experience.

Sara announced that she was only the opening act and the Eagles were going
to be on stage any minute. The band broke into a one verse rendition of

-You Can't Hide Your Lying Eyes

-Tiger in a Teacup Town

-Everything's Red

Lilly came to the stage on Lance's shoulders and joined Sara in singing.
I've seen Sara's first grade picture, and Lilly looks just like it.

-We Are Each Other's Angels

By then it was over and everyone started walking over to the DART light rail
station. Sara was busy 'doing mommy things' and couldn't stick around for
very long after the show, but I still got one wave and one hug. Sara also
seemed really excited about the upcoming Uncle Calvin's concert, so I think
that one will be fun as well.

Take care!

Hey Group,

Boy am I jealous. My wife and I hauled the kids over to the West End to
see the show and got our bottoms all settled in for the show. Only problem
- my kids love Sara but my kids have a little trouble with 110 dB sound
systems. Go figure.

After Optimistic Fool, I got "that look" from my wife. To all married men
out there, you understand "that look" to mean - "its time to go, lets go
now before I get irate, I let you be a little kid for a while, but its time
to go, come on honey don't push it". Amazing look.

I must concur with the crummy sound issues brought up earlier. It was like
a really bad year at Kerrville. I don't think I will ever really
understand how hard it could be to have approximately 20 other bands on the
same stage over the previous three days and still manage to screw up a
mixing/engineering board. Go figure.

It was nice to see Chris there (she recognized me from my parrot earring),
but I don't know Robert by sight yet. We will have to meet sometime.

All the best to the group as I am off to work.

Mr. T.S.

Hey ya!

>Only problem - my kids love Sara but my kids have a little trouble with 110

And Optimistic Fool was really loud with a lot of screaming in it.

>
>After Optimistic Fool, I got "that look" from my wife.

I was fortunate enough to be with a lady friend who liked Sara. The other
two ladies in our group wanted to leave early, but our energy outweighed
their apathy.

>I must concur with the crummy sound issues brought up earlier.

Something I forgot to mention was with all of the stages going at the same
time, it was impossible for Sara to have any 'quiet' moments. There was a
moment where she wanted to get quiet on 'We Are Each Other's Angels' and all
I could hear was the other band just rockin' away.

>It was nice to see Chris there (she recognized me from my parrot
>earring),but I don't know Robert by sight yet. We will have to meet
>sometime.

Uncle Calvin's maybe? I wish I still had my long hair and beard because that
would be my most distinctive characteristic. Sadly, I look like a yuppie
now. Hm. If you are at a Sara Hickman concert and see someone who is about
6' 3" and hanging around in the back of the crowd (so as not to block
anyone) it will probably be me. The height will probably the best way to
find me. Either that, or I should start wearing parrot earrings as well.

Take care!

I was deperately trying to impress.
