Hello Jazzbeaus61 and everyone,
I never saw Louis in person but I used to see him on television when I was a
young boy. He would be on a variety show occasionally and I would catch him.
Although I didn't know anything about jazz at the time, I had a sense and a
feeling that he was someone special. I always enjoyed his total performance.
As for sidemen, I too, cannot say who I like best, they were all excellent.
They would have to be to play with Louis. I like every piece I ever heard from
him and I have over 800, including what I think was his last commercial
recording. It was a reading of "The Night Before Christmas." It was done
sometime in 1971 and that is the year he died. I do lean towards his early work
with King Oliver and the Hot Five and Hot Seven. I sure would love to get more
of the Country & Western songs from his album. I have a few but, of course, I
want them all!

Louis' genuis spanned many decades. Ergo, he played in, or led, a
great number of groups and bands. In the groups, a lot of sidemen
came and went.
I'm curious what the members here feel about ....
1 - Which group did you like the best? 2 - Which sidemen were your
favorites?
For me, making a choice is difficult, can't single out any, but I
will say that I always liked some of the early stuff with King
Oliver's band and the KC Hot Seven.
I only got to see Louis peform in person once, at a club in LA in 1959
(ha,ha, that was before a long of members here were born). Danny
Barcellona was a new drummer with Louis then. Edmund Hall was in the
group (a quintet, I believe) but I don't remember the rest of the
players.
