Dear Friends,
Last week I chillin' at a party in the home of the wonderfully talented Kara
Langer (myspace.com/karalanger) and she asked me to join her for a writers'
night at the French Quarter Cafe on February 12!
That's next Tuesday, one week from today!
I'm quite an admirer of Kara's compositions, and I'm really looking
forward to have a chance to share the stage with her in my 'hood of
East Nashville!
Show starts at 8pm. Hope to see you there!
-Scott
P.S.- I don't know if there's a cover, but it may be $5.

Dear friends,
I've decided to cancel my show at EdgeHill Studios Cafe next Friday
night. I've been in an auto accident and life has been a bit more
difficult since then. I'm not "seriously" injured though, so don't
worry. But I don't feel I'll be ready to do a good/fun/entertaining
performance next week, so I plan to reschedule.
Thanks for your support!

Dear friends,
How's it goiiiiiin? Here's an advance notice that my next show
will be from 7 to 8pm on Friday October 26, at EdgeHill Studios Cafe
in Nashville (corner of EdgeHill & Villa). It'll be a band show, AND
my parents will be in town to celebrate my 35th birthday.
The last show we did at EdgeHill was a total blast and I'm happy to go
again. More details later. Mark your calendars!

Dear friends,
This Tuesday I'll be playing at the Family Wash in East Nashville for
"Short Sets with Cole Slivka". I'll be playing 6 songs starting
around 9pm. Other performers will play before and after me for this
FREE show.
Come on down and get one the FW's famous Shepherd's Pies!
Cheers,
Scott
Family Wash is on the corner of Porter & Greenwood in East Nashville.
From Gallatin Rd, go east on Eastland and bear right onto Porter
(after Scott St.). Then follow until the stop sign, look left! There
it is!
Dear friends,
I'll be playing as one of the featured singer-songwriters at The
Rutledge in Nashville this Tuesday at 8pm. The Rutledge is my
favorite listening venue in Nashville, and I'm excited about playing
there with some other great artists! And it's free! It would give
me great pleasure to share my songs with you. Hope you can make it.

Dear friends,
Drummer Kevin Gathright is in Nashville for Easter, so we're going to
play a 4-song set with bassist Steve Satre at BarCar* tonight, for
Amanda Williams' writers night show. I'm advising people to show up at
9pm, and we should go on between 9 and 10. It's so great to play with
the band! I know this is kind of short notice, but if you're able to
make it, it'll be super-cool. :-)
Cheers,
Scott
*BarCar is in Cummins Station in Nashville TN, on 10th St. just south
of Demonbreun. cf. www.thebarcar.com
Hey ev'body!
Hope you're staying warm, drippin' those pipes and what not.
So I haven't been playing much, because my day job has been very
demanding, but last night I got an offer to play a 1/2-hour set at
Radio Cafe tomorrow night. I'll be sharing with a few other folks,
including the very talented Katy Bowser! (She's the one who asked me
to play.) I'll also try to bring a drummer friend (maybe even Matthew
Burgess!).
Hope you can make it.
Radio Cafe is at the corner of 14th & Woodland in East Nashville.
They serve food, and there's no cover!
Best wishes,
Scott
P.S.- I do plan to play a full band gig the second weekend in April,
when drummer Kevin Gathright visits from Austin!

Dear friends,
I've already written you a length e-mail telling you not only about an
upcoming performance but about what's been going on with me since July
(and why I haven't responded to many e-mails), and..... it got lost. :-(
Which is interesting, because it included some content (or some
implied content) of a personal nature which I worried might be an
"over-share". So, I'll chalk that up to providence and proceed briefly:
I'm playing on Thursday at Cafe Coco (http://www.cafecoco.com/) at
8pm. It's only an open mic, but I've been so busy it's all I can manage.
Yes, most of you are in Central Texas, not Nashville. So, chalk this
up to "what's going on in Scott's life" kinda stuff since I haven't
written you in a while.
Basically I'm way-the-heck busy with my day job, usually swamped
and/or tired. Haven't done any mixing on the new album yet, also
because I need a little extra audio hardware to pull it off.
Been to a couple great shows and took some songwriting classes... all
described in that lost e-mail which... it's "the one that got away."
But I'm also "working though" some stuff... so basically, "busy" +
"tired" + "working through stuff" means that if I haven't gotten back
to you, it's not you, it's my problem, and i hope to remedy that... in
6 months. ;-)
I'll end with Steve Perry: "Be good to yourseeeeelf!"

Dear friends,
This Monday the band and I will play our last concert together in
Austin. (I'm moving to Nashville on Tuesday.)
We'll play from 11pm to midnight following Bob Schneider, at the Saxon
Pub! Please come out as this is not only the last chance to hear me
for a while, but it's one of the few chances the band & I have actually
had to play out for a while!
The cover is $5, or $8 if you want come earlier for Bob's show. (I
wish I could make the guest list 300 names long, but they won't let me.)
It'll be great to see you, rock for you, and say goodbye to you.
Parting is such sweet....

P.S.- Oh hey! I posted one of our newest recordings to the myspace
page: http://www.myspace.com/scotthawley
Check it out!

Dear friends,
This Monday I'll be playing at Mozart's (i.e. "Mozart's Coffee
Roasters, Lake Austin Blvd & Enfield Dr.). This will be one of my
last shows before moving to Nashville*. I'll be playing from about 9
to 11pm.
Hope to see you there!

Dear friends,
I'm writing to let you know about a few recordings of my work:
1. I'm featured on the latest edition of the "Austin Connection"
podcast! cf. www.austinconnection.net or search for Austin Connection
in iTunes under podcasts. The Austin Connection has featured many
excellent Austin-based singersongwriters including George Ensle, Karen
Mal, Steve Brooks, The Hudsons... The sound quality is amazing. I
had no idea, while sitting & chatting with Jeff Tveraas, that the
interview & songs (4 of 'em) would end up sounding so great. Oh, and
it's totally free!
2. Next week Kevin, Mark and I are going into the studio to record 5
(or so...) new songs! Please keep us in your thoughts & prayers.
I'll try to post a few rough mixes as they become available, but the
"fully mixed and mastered" version will not be out for several months.
3. I have a video of one of my showns with Kevin at Flipnotics,
recorded by Daniel Tucek (bassist for the inimitable One Bad Pig) and
am trying to process it into song-sized video files. Check the
website for updates.
Next gig: Friday, June 16. Venue TBA. Band gig!
Cheers,
Scott
P.S.- Going to Kerrville Folk Festival again tomorrow. If you're
there, say hi!

Dear friends,
I'm writing to tell you about a couple special shows tomorrow:
Tomorrow night will be my last performance at the Satellite Cafe*.
It's been a fun 8 months! I'm playing a quiet acoustic/instrumental
solo set from 8 to 9pm.
After that, I'll be playing a band gig during Reese Perkin's break
at Grafitti's**. Show starts at 10pm, so you're likely to see me,
drummer Kevin Gathright and bassist Mark Alexander around 11pm. I
*love* rocking out with these guys, and I hope you get a chance to
hear us before I hafta move!
Hope to see you,

Dear friends,
Our band gig scheduled for this Friday at Two Brothers Pizza in
Bastrop, sadly, ain' gon' happen. 2BP is moving to a new location,
and as such, they are close. :-( That's a bummer, because we had a
GREAT, ROCKIN' time there.
I'm still playing solo on May 13 from 8 to 9pm, at the Satellite Cafe.
Last time I actually did an instrumental show using my digital
looping unit! That was fun. (My Lowden guitar was in the shop, so I
was playin El Stratocaster, and felt the need to sup' it up somehow.)
This time around, I'll try to do both instrumental and songs, as usual.
The band boys (Kevin & Mark) and I had a great practice tonight.
We're getting ready to go into the studio to record 5 new songs (well,
5 or so). It's a blast. I'm actually planning not to release "the
full album" until December; I plan to take the tracks we record and
edit & mix them on my own at home in Nashville this fall, gleaning
what I can about CD-making and marketing from fellow Belmont
University folks all the while!
BUT! With that said, we'll have some band shows before I go. TBA. At
least some kind of going-away-concert. ...Gosh we're fun to listen to.
See, I recently realized: I'm not a folk singer. I'm just NOT. (You
probably new this already.) I try to be, but...recently it's just
become clear. (Saw the Bob Dylan documentary, didn't get into any folk
festivals,...and stuff.) And it's a bit sad; I'm actually grieving
over the non-folk-singer-ness going on. But hey, I like what I do, and
it seems you do to! So thanks! All this means I can actually have
more confidence, doing-what-I-do, and not trying to be something I'm
not. (Don't worry, I'm not ditching the acoustic guitar.)
Okay, so let me know how you're doing.
Cheerio,
Scott

Dear friends,
Got a little news-io for ya here:
Gigs!
------
I've got a new set of gigs playing with my band! The first of these
is this coming Sunday:
Apr 2, 2006, 5:30-8:30pm - Two Brothers Pizzeria, Bastrop TX.
It would be really great to see all y'all there! Well, not "all
y'all" 'cause you wouldn't fit, but anyway, since this is a new venue
for us it'd be cool to play for a bunch o' friends!
Also I'll do my usual solo gig Saturday of next week at the Satellite
Cafe:
Apr 8, 2006, 8-9pm - Flip's Satellite Cafe (7101 Hwy 71), Austin TX.
Moving to Nasvhille!
--------------------
...Wait, did I already tell you about this? ....I've told everybody I
know so it's hard to remember: I got a JOB for the fall, and it's
beyond my wildest dreams! I get to be a (Asst) Professor of Physics
in a non-boring town --- Nashville, in fact! --- *and* I get to teach
(& take classes for free & use the recording studios) at a
music-business-oriented university, and they even want me to teach
astrophysics, which is my area and which is not something you get to
teach at small schools! That's right, I'll be working at Belmont
University! Rock and roll!!!!! So, sadly, this means I'll have to
leave you kind folks in Central Texas, and will have to get used to
having country music piped in at public places, but hey, it's a
living. Oh, and (drummer) Kevin Gathright will be moving to Memphis,
so how cool is that???
Wishing you a happy...rainy day. :-)
Cheers,
Scott

So I was kind of spacing out, daydreaming, when I thought,
wouldn't it be great if I played the Satellite Cafe this Saturday?
Would that be cool or what?
And then, viola! It's on my gig calendar: Satellite Cafe, March 11,
8-9pm!!
And it's totally true, like in the real world! How cool is that?
So come on down for some melodic sounds, while U eat.
Cheers,
-Scott
P.S.-No cover, goooood fooood.

Dear friends,
This Saturday I'll be playing from 8 to 10pm at Genuine Joe Coffee on
Anderson lane (a bit east of Burnet). It's a neat little venue with
good acoustics.
Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
Gen-u-ine Joe!!!

Say there peeps! A ton of stuff has been happenin', and I'm moving
forward, and I wanted to let y'alls-types know about it!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Okay, first off: FREE SHOW this MONDAY at Artz Rib House. And it's
me, playing!
I'm playing the break set for Sara Elizabeth Campbell & the Banned.
She starts around 7:30, and I start around 8:30. Goooood food at
Artz. I went there last Monday JUST to get me some brisket (and hear
Andrew McKnight, who folk-rocks).
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Artist Development: In November & December, I had some "counseling
sessions" with Kari Estrin, who's a music-biz career consultant in
Nashville. It was very helpful as far as getting me over some of my
hangups and unproductive behaviors. Since then, I've been more
proactive about defining & pursuing my goals, and "connections" and
opportunities have been coming my way! I also had a couple important
meeting with singer-songwriter Alton Rex, who (for free!) dispensed
his wisdom on making a living, booking, forming professional
relationships, and more. He also nominated me for membership in....
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
I recently was "indicted" into the Austin Conspiracty of Performing
Songwriters! (http://www.austinconspiracy.com/) This is an
organization of professional, gigging musicians who help each other.
I've known most of these very experienced singer-songwriters for a few
years anyway, so it's cool to be counted worthy as one of them!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Also, I'm workin' on a new album! 10 new songs, count 'em.
Due out...mid-year, methinks.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
AAAAnnnnd! I'll probably have to leave Austin this fall, 'cause my
job at UT is ending and I'll need another job. Preferably in a town
that's not too boring. And guess what?!?!?!?!?!?! Next week I have a
job interview at Belmont University in NASHVILLE!!! Would that
totally folk-rock or WHAT?!!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Oh hey! Next month, from Feb 10 to 14, is the International Folk
Alliance, and it's HERE at the Hilton in Austin this year! I'll be
playing Saturday & Sunday, as well as a special Conspiracy showcase at
the Hideout on Congress the Wednesday before. More on that later.
Thus, I won't be playing at the Satellite Cafe on Feb 11; John Wilson
will be filling in for me.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Feb. 8th I'm playing a benefit show for Keep Austin Beautiful. More
on that later.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
I've got a MySpace page! http://www.myspace.com/scotthawley
I've got streaming versions of songs from my EP.
Check it out, and add me as your friend!
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
So, lot o' stuff, huh? Well, write me back and let me hear how
you're doing??
-Scott
Hey party people in the place to be,
This Saturday from 8 to 9pm I'll be playing some excellent music, at
the Satellite Cafe down south. It's in the shopping center with the
Albertson's at the 290-71 "Y" in Oak Hill. Free show!
Come awn daaiii-yowwwn!
-Scott
P.S.- Hey, I got listed in the Chronicle! Woo-hoo!

Dear friends,
I've been ill for about a week now, and today I find that I have no
voice to sing with. Thus I'd like to spare us all a little
embarassment, and will reschedule. If you're going to Artz Rib House
tonight, rest assured that there will be great music anyway!
Best wishes,
Scott

Dear friends,
I'll be playing from 7 to 10pm at Saradora's in Round Rock this
Wednesday. And I'm also playing at Artz Rib House next Monday during
Sara Elizabeth Campbell's break (ca. 8:15pm). It'll be great to see you!
Saturday I had a long phone conference with Kari Estrin, who's a
music-biz career consultant. We talked about some of my personal
hang-ups that keep me from advancing professionally, and came up with
a plan to get me "moving forward". I can tell you more about that later.
I also had a meeting Sunday with Corrie Box
(http://www.corriebox.com), a jazz cat (kitten?) who's
enthusiastically agreed to handle booking tasks for me! Yay Corrie!!
Many blessings to you this holiday season.

Dear friends,
I'm playing at the romantic Sattelite Cafe this Saturday from 8 to
9pm. No cover. Come on down! It's a bit south (at the Y in Oak Hill,
in the shopping center with the HEB), but it's worth it. Great food,
atmosphere....wait staff...
I've decided to start recording a new album, to be released "early
2006". So if you have any "faves" that you want me to be sure to
record (or re-record...), write me back. I'll also be meeting with
a "music career consultant lady" to get a better handle on where all
this is going!
Finally, I wrote a new song last week that I'm quite pleased with.
Since you guys are on the "inside track" by being on this e-mail list,
I'll share you a rough recording I made shortly after writing it:
http://www.scotthawley.com/sounds/Zeno.mp3
and the words...

See you Saturday!

If anyone is interested in selling a car:
I'm looking for a Toyota, Honda, Nissan or Subaru, 4-door or
hatchback, with around 100K miles, for $2000-$3000. Would be good a
bit o' trunk space for haulin' music gear, but I've also gotten by
with very small trunks in the past...
(I have only 8 more months of job security, so I'm not dropping any
major cash right now...)
P.S.- Oh! And if I can pay in unsold CDs, that would be PERFECT! ;-)
...I'm kidding.
Dear friends,
I hope you're doing well. The twin hurricanes, the start of school,
and other stuff make for an interesting month. I hope this e-mail
finds you in favorable circumstances, or at least with a favorable
disposition! ;-)
For me, my car's engine blew up coming back from the Kerrville
Wine & music festival, and a number of odd inconveniences have
been odd, however my relationships have been going well.
DISASTER RELIEF:
---------------
Currently, if you buy one of my CDs online, all the money will go to
the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.
SHOWS NEXT WEEK:
---------------
It's a pleasure to have a regular gig at the Satellite Cafe
(down at the Y-intersection of 71 & 290) --- the second
Saturday of every month, from 8 to 9pm.
Next weekend is also the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance conference
out at the Lakeway Inn and Resort. Currently I have two "showcase"
spots:
* Thursday, 11:50pm-12:10am in the HAAM showcase room 802
* Friday, 12:40am-1am in the "Performance Alley" showcase in
room...um..."TBA"!
Many of the SWRFA showcases are free (including mine), with some GREAT
singer-songwriters and friends of mine (yes, the two sets overlap
somewhat!) playing. So come on out! See www.swrfa.com for more info.
(If it says "Server error", just try again...)

JOURNAL:
-------
Last Thursday, the composer and guitar virtuoso Pierre Bensusan
played in Austin. (http://www.pierrebensusan.com) It was a truly
inspiring evening, and very special for me in particular. I had
the privilege of studying under Pierre at his house in France
in the spring of 2001. Seeing him again recalled to mind many of
the lessons about music-making that I learned and somewhat lost
touch with. The emphasis on "playing from the heart" of being
"totally fearless" was fully realized in Pierre' performance.
Furthermore, for myself in particular, it was great to interact
with Pierre again. Since he's an international bigshot, I figured
I'd have to jog his memory a bit. ("Remember me? Scott? I played
ball with your son in your yard?") Such was not the case. Not
only did he remember me --- he told the ENTIRE AUDIENCE a story
about me, about how I suggested an easier way to play one of his
songs. (Tune the second string up to a C.... but Pierre only
plays in DADGAD...) He then played a song I learned, but
differently from how I learned it, he would flash a funny smile
my way. He pretty much played the song "at" me...
The eye contact I had with Pierre during the night was great.
Sometimes his expression would be "Hey, watch what I can do!" or
"You're not expecting this!", and sometimes it was the expression
of a teacher, "Hey! Are you paying attention, my student?"
One Pierre anecdote: I went up to talk to him before the show,
but then I quickly got self-conscious because I didn't want to be
bugging him right before he went on. But Pierre said, "Oh no. I
want to be out here, with the people. The last thing I want to do
is be 'meditating' in my dressing room." And then he looked at me
and pointed a finger, saying, "The meditation occurs when I am
playing." I will remember that for the rest of my life...
Hope to see you soon.
Best wishes,
Scott

* Sept 10, 2005, 8-9pm - Flip's Sattelite Cafe (7101 Hwy 71), Austin TX.
This gig will be me playing "pretty instrumental improv" to cooing
couples.
* Sept 14, 2005, 9pm, Flipnotics Coffeespace, Austin, TX.
Kevin Gathright (drums) and I will dispense the rock.
Dear friends,
This has been an exciting time. Two weeks ago I got a chance to play
at the Mountain Stage NewSong Festival in Shepherdstown WV. I was
entered in the contest and I *also* got to use my beat box skills to
accompany another artist! I've been looking for an opportunity to be
"sideman", and as far as I know, there's plenty of untapped potential
for the "folk beat box" market...
Shepherdstown was great, and I got a chance to see many friends,
including (Austin's own!) Betty Soo, Erik Balkey, John William Davis,
Dalis Allen... and I got to attend a very helpful seminar on "Being
Worthy of Your Success" given by Tom Prasada-Rao and Cary Cooper.
Then last weekend I got to go to the Kerrville Wine & Music Festival!
Saw tons of friends, played a bunch --- even let my Lowden guitar
get passed around a song circle. It was therapeutic for me to let it
go, and it was great to hear my friends sound like a million bucks on
that wonderful instrument. (Got several compliments on axe, by the
way, for which I claim no responsibility.)
Then my car blew up!
Yea, coming back from Kerrville Saturday night, just outside of
Johnson City. My engine blew a seal...oh, long story. But it all
worked out okay, my friend Allen drove out to get us. Then I lost my
ID and my credit cards... ugh... Life is just now getting back to
normal.
Oh, plent of other interesting news to share, but I have to go. Hope
to see you soon!
Peace,
Scott
Dear friends,
My hands are largely recovered from the tendonitis I got a couple
weeks ago, so I'm going through with two gigs this weekend:
Tonight at Seattle's Best Coffee at 5th & Lamar, I'm playing from 7:30
to 9pm. No cover.
Saturday at Flip's Sattelite Cafe (which is down at the Y in Oak Hill,
in the corner of the shopping center with the HEB), I'll be playing
solo guitar instrumentals from 8 to 9pm. The Sattelite Cafe is a
great "date spot"!
Hope to see you,

Dear friends,
My left hand is really sore from a couple long gigs last week, and I'm
taking a break this week. Thus I won't be playing at Triumph tonight,
but I do plan to be at (new gig) Seattle's Best Coffee at 5th & Lamar
next Friday (Aug 19th) from 7:30pm to 9pm.
Best wishes,

Dear friends,
Today I got a call from my friend John Wilson, who asked if I could
"fill in" at Mozart's tonight! (Hmmm...let me think...)
I'll be playing from 8pm to 11pm. No cover.
(Mozart's is a great coffee shop with an expansive patio on the water,
at the end of Lake Austin Blvd, near Enfield Rd.)
It'd be great to see you!
Best wishes,
Scott
Dear friends,
Friday August 5 (tomorrow --- sorry for the late notice), I'm playing a FREE
show Round Rock, at Saradora's, from about 7:30 to 10pm. It'd be great to see
you there. Saradora's is neat, family-oriented yet eclectic coffee house that
serves food.
Hope to see you there!
Best wishes,
Scott
Hi, Shane Bartell (who's awesome, by the way, cf.
www.shanebartell.com) asked me to fill in this Saturday from 8 to 9pm
at Flip's Sattelite Cafe! It's located at 7101 Hwy. 71
West. See www.flipnotics.com for more info!
Also, we/I got invited back to "big Flipnotics" for a date in
September (the 14th). So that's great.
Have a great week!
