Let’s get one thing straight - Maria Dunn is not a singer-songwriter.
Yes, she’s a singer. And yes, she writes songs. But Maria belongs to a
tradition as old as time itself. Her songs tell stories about real events and
people. Like Woody Guthrie, she brings characters from the past and the present
to life in original music that pays homage to her Celtic roots and Canadian
upbringing.
Originally born in Scotland, Dunn's family moved to Ontario, Canada, when
she was still an infant, and then to Edmonton when she was 10. "I really
think that my music is a result of the influences I've experienced in my
life," she says. "Obviously the Celtic influence comes a bit from my
background, but I also grew up with my dad playing Johnny Cash and Lonnie
Donegan songs, and country blues stuff, so I think there was a Western
influence there as well."
We are pleased to have Maria Dunn return to the Phinney Neighborhood Center
stage for this Seattle Folklore Society concert.
