Heya,
My friend and I are considering the possibilities of
starting a club night in Central London dealing exclusively
with Shibuya-Kei/Tokyo Pop (call-it-what-you-will) music.
It would be for both fans of SK music in London and any
Japanese people in London who would like go to a club night
devoted to it.
But first I need to engage in a little research.
Could anyone, really anyone who has an opinion on this
mail me on ( mzui@... ) here are a few of the
questions that are rattling about in my head.
Would anyone come?
Where is the best place to advertise?
What are those killer SK tracks that everyone would love to
hear in a club?
Are there any potential DJ's in London for an SK night?
Thanks in advance,
Mzui.
hello zaum,
is another high exit still available?

B-17: A Mini-Epic (The Wacky Adventures of a 17-Year-Old Sex Slave) is
a bizarre, energetic neo-fairy-tale full of beautiful images and
sounds. A young American girl's response to Shibuya culture and the
current political situation.

Sarah and Yumi are top-secret sex slaves for a high-ranking government
official. They spend their days in a bizarre play-pen/torture
chamber/slave-labor station, where they produce pro-war polo shirts by
hand and live in constant fear. Yumi, having lived in the cell the
longest, is almost completely brainwashed and paralyzed, but Sarah
still possesses enough spunk to try to escape. Her impulsive scheme is
thwarted by a few terrifying obstacles, but in the end, her inner
courage comes through to save the day!
Nick, this is all great stuff, thanks very much for your last two
postings, I'm a little snowed under at work this week, I'll reply
in earnest in a couple of days time.
Loving both the Tomoe cds, still awating the arrival of the Childisc
material.

p.s. do you know much about Nagisa Cosmetic? I've been listening
the that cd loads over the past day or two.
p.p.s. my e-bay-ing continues apace, just got a copy of Takako
Minekawa's 'Cloudy Cloud Calculator' for a tenner, new and sealed.

Sure I do ;-)
She got signed to Ki/oon, a Sony label that specializes in mixtures
of pop and techno, when she was 16. She initially worked with Takkyu
Ishino from Denki Groove as producer and only wrote a small amount of
her material herself. The album "Super Model" and a bunch of singles
came from that era. One of the singles became an end theme to the
popular anime "Kodocha"
She was a favorite guest of "Hey x3 Music Champ" as I guess she could
be both be teased by and tease back at the hosts. TV got interested
in her so she started co-starring as a regular actress in a bunch of
mostly TV productions, usually as the main character's eccentric
friend and she also became a TV talent - you know appearing as
yourself on regular TV programs. She still does that .
The next big musical thing was "Megaphone Speaks" where she began
producing and partly writing more material, though she does other's
songs too. Some well known acts worked on songs with her, Yasuharu
Konishi, Shonen Knife's Naoko, Jun Matsue of the Spoozys and Buffalo
Daughter. Buffalo Daughter also did a super neat Giorgio Moroder-
style remix that only appeared on 12".
Right before she was 20 I guess her contract ended with Sony and she
went to Warner where they seem to have set up a new label Dream
Machine with her as I think the debut artist. "Dream and Machine" was
her 20th birthday album (well it's actually either a really long EP
or a slightly short album). Along with Buffalo Daughter and Shonen
Knife again she's joined by Jitterin’ Jin and Sean and Yuka from Cibo
Matto. She followed that with a good remix album with a new (not
manic) bossa nova song produced by Sugizo. I guess in 2000 she might
have gotten overworked. She was producing a friend Wakame (Yoshino)
and designing all sorts of things including fashion besides the
music, touring and TV. She was studying design and fashion around
this time and still designs clothing that's for sale. And she made
her theatre debut too - and not only did the songs but designed all
the costumes for it.
Starting in 2001 until last year she released almost no music for
several years though she had lots of TV and radio hosting jobs. She
formed ZuTTo, a duet with Eiko Matsumoto in 2004 - which is more down
to earth. They got a fair amount of press for drastically lowering
the price of their single and selling out all the copies real fast.
(though it was repressed and can still be bought) They are tied in
with Marusan a soup company and appear on their commercials and get
their live shows sponsored. In 2005 she formed a performance group,
PANIKARAQS, which includes Yuka Honda and Steve Eto (Pugs, Demi Semi
Quaver) and a dancer, Chikage. They've just played live. No releases.
Lately she's working with techno composer Kagami and they did the
closing song for the 6th season of "Konjiki no Gashbell" (Zach Bell).
Still these days she does a lot TV talento stuff when not starring on
stage. She was a regular on a kids show- so you can hear her sing
other people's kids songs on several tie in albums. http://
www.yymonster.tv/
Regarding musical theater she just wrapped up a big reprise tour of
Japan in the role she was born to play
http://pippi.macoron.jp/
(though someone european wrote the musical, if you know the popular
children's book and late 1960s movie character I'm sure you'll get
what I mean)
. She's about to co-star in a play called "Jail Breakers" where some
guys in prison put on a rock show in order to break out of prison I
think. http://www.g2produce.com/other/jail/ I think she only
collaborated on the content of her debut play, not on the numerous
fairly big production plays she's been in since.
She went to France a couple times recently. She only did mini shows
and I guess is trying to see how she's received there.
Really all her stuff is good though I'm sure you can run into singles
that are either too sweet or too manic when you want the other -
which I guess is her main pitfall.
Here's her official Japanese site
http://www.takeitag.co.jp/tomoe/
which unfortunately uses double byte sub-directories for assets so is
really hit and miss as to it working on completely non-Japanese
machines. I think she's sort of doing the site herself using some
sort of sitebuilder program that's not very international savy. Sadly
last year she had a two full length unreleased songs on her site that
I guess her management or the domain's webmaster told her to remove
(if you wonder why there is a speaker icon on her homepage there used
to be background tracks).

The CD itself is like Ł9.50 in Japan and the trick is to find
someone who sells it and uses EMS rather than something super
expensive like FedEx or UPS to ship. Or I guess you could buy
several CDs to spread out expensive shipping. Trouble is it's on a
smaller label (Vroom), though it is being distributed to some extent.
I see Amazon.co.jp has it. I like them but now they use more
expensive shipping. HMV.co.jp has super expensive shipping but their
site is available english.

I think the Plastics started the pico thing. Unlike YMO they didn't
use game sounds, just sort of twee sounding drum machines but they
are probably the biggest influence aside from old games on many of
the younger bands today in any of those styles.

Well actually there was just a little gap around 2000-2002 when they
were really out of print but given the mass of used copies out there
(including early 90s low priced American remasters) and fairly recent
low priced reissues of their core catalog by Sony EU and Sony Canada
they are many times easier to find than other Japanese bands. p.
For what it's worth, YMO divides into two categories, the core stuff
that originally came out and that the band had a say on. Then in the
early 90s their former label went nuts creating all sorts of remixes
and live CDs often with one track that was "rare". A lot of that
stuff is rare but it's frequently based on leftovers, though some is
interesting. Anyway the main point is their original releases can be
found without paying silly prices. p.s. there's a yahoogroup
YMOrare with 900 or something members with the main focus on trading
rare YMO sort of related tracks
The other YMO era bands were Moonriders, who are very warm and
nostalgic for 40-ish year old Japanese people though aren't as
hightech or unusual as the other bands I'll mention. Anyway they were
very key players on the scene.
There's Ippu-do. I never really got into them though many fans of the
British band Japan are into their connection with that band.
Guitarist Masami Tsuchiya sometimes does interesting solo work.
Hikashu, which predates YMO though far less mainstream were very
electronic in their early years. Very unknown to the filesharing
crowd though these days Makagami the lead singer is in John Zorn's
circle of avant live performance oriented musicians. Around 1980 they
were very Technopop/New Wave though not so much in later years.
P-Model were first produced by Sakuma from the Plastics. They tended
to have a more hard sound and I'd say that along with early
"hardcore" Devo are the basis of the sound of Polysics. They reformed
for most of the 90s with a superb technopop sound. 2004 saw a oneshot
version of the band, Kaku-P-Model, that was fast and hard sounding
again. I really love their 90s material though their first album is a
classic.

Well Denki Geoove have been around over 15 years. I think "Flash
Papa" (their first major label album) through "Dragon" are fantastic
and not much like dance music. That's like 1991-1994.
p.s. Tomoe Shinohara's first one, "Super Model" is Denki Groove
members and their friends backing her

It's often great to explore the *label* websites of any smaller
labels artists that you like are on. Obviously smaller labels tend to
have several bands with a somewhat similar appeal
Well if you get into Takemura (Chilldisc - p.s. Nobukazu is his first
name) there is certainly a huge catalog of releases to explore.
Lots of people like Capsule for a recent take on Shibuya-kei
Anyone know if Cuppie Rumne are still active?

fun retro style
Noriko Tujiko has quite a following for her avant pop songs.
Halcali are loads of fun.

oh, many used, often out of print Japanese pop CDs for sale here:
http://technopop.gemm.com/
Hey Bryan,
Thanks, I've listened to the Maher Shalal CD (Blues Du Jour)
It's not bad, I think it'll need a few more listens! Especially
the tracks where they are stumbling around barely able to play.
The Kasumasa CD is fantastic, really beautiful and elegant with
amazing processed vocal sounds and samples. I haven't heard the
first two though, I had a look and can't see anywhere obvious
where I could purchase them, if you know anywhere that stocks
them please let me know.
I got my two Tomoe Shinohara CDs yesterday, (Megaphone Speaks/
Dream & Machine) I had a listen to the former this morning and
it sounds really good on first listen, quite spacey and odd with
some pretty interesting chord sequences going on too.
Does anyone know anything about her?
I spied a copy of Cartoom! by Plus Tech Squeeze Box in HMV
yesterday, they want Ł27, it is a Japanese import with Obi
and all that but I'm really torn becuase I want the album on

Hi There,
I am a newbie to the list, I'm also a newcomer to shibuya-kei
music
and also to pico pop/nano pop/city pop and what other variations
that
may exist.
I first became aware of this kind of music I guess through The
Yellow
Magic Orchestra, whom I love very much but until recently their
CDs
have been hard to get hold of. After a bit of scouting around on
the
internet I found some postings relating some recommendations of
Japanese Music and I started downloading and exploring it.
Yes, I'm ashamed to say I have downloaded a lot of the music but
I
am buying a lot of it too and intend to replace all my MP3's
with CDs,
It's just very difficult getting hold of some of the material on
CD.
I'm finding E-Bay is pretty great so far for finding the right
cd's and I've been
buying some stuff purely on spec, which is quite exciting
because 90%
of what I've heard, I like.
Here is a list of what I've discovered so far:
Plus Tech Squeeze Box
Fantastic Plastic Machine
McDonald Duck Eclair
Takako Minekawa
Akiko Yano
Yoshinori Sunahara
Advantage Lucy
Nagisa Cosmetic
Aki Tsuyuko
Asa Chang & Junray
Buffalo Daughter
Cibo Matto
Cornelius
Hi Posi
Sushi Compilation 4004
Kahimi Karie
Migu
Polysics
Pizzicato 5
Shina Ringo
YMCK
Yukari Fresh
That's maybe a bit of a mixed bag, but I've been checking this
stuff out with no frame of reference, which is great fun!
My favourites are probably Plus Tech, Yukari Fresh, T. Minekawa
Akiko Yano, Y. Sunahara, Cornelius, Advantage Lucy. But I really
like all the rest, the only name I keep seeing that I didn't
like when
I heard was Denki Groove, it sounds a little too like commercial
dance
music to me, oh yea, Supercar were disappointing as well.
I have cd's coming to me in the post from Maher Shalal Hash Baz,
2 from Tomoe
Shinohara, Nobukazu/Assembler (and a seperate Childisc
compilation) none
of which I've heard, but I'm really looking forward to.
If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know, you can
see what my
tastes run to from the above list I guess.
Thanks in advance,
Crawford...
p.s. listening to the new Kasumasa Hashimoto cd which is lovely.

I've been noticing that lately quite a few bands are making songs
with video game style sounds.
YCMK comes to mind right away.
http://www.ymck.net/discography/index.html
I would guess the first use would have to be Yellow Magic Orchestra's
self-titled album (1978)
I'm curious about examples in pop songs that came in between YMO and
recent Nintendo/8-bit style tracks. In other words I'm -not- looking
for names of albums *of* game soundtracks (like "Konami Sound
Museum") but artists making songs using game sounds in their songs.
So far I know of Haruomi Hosono's "Video Game Music" (which is more
or less actual game music), his "Super Xevious" EP (which isn't just
game music). I've also been sent info about Makoto Highland Band's
1979 single "Dancin'" (p.s. Makoto Yano was a prolific producer
married to Akiko Yano in the 1970s)
Anyone try anything like this in the 90s? I guess it's a little
tricky because for instance Famicom music was more or less the
quality of "cheaper" regular synthesizers. Then again if someone were
to bother using game sounds they would probably retain some sort of
game-like feeling to the track.
From the 90s all I can think of is former YMO member Yukihiro
Takahashi's productions of "Cine Techno- Love" and "Cine Techo -
Yukihiro" - they are more or less game style cover versions of
classic movie themes, not new songs with game sounds.
Also does anyone know what the first releases of recent bands were?

I'm so sorry you felt you were being chastised and then embarrassed.
That wasn't the intent at all.
I certainly don't run this group or have any complaints objection to
what you have mentioned in your intro. I assumed that you were
possibly interested in more info. I'm sorry if the info or the way it
was presented was contrary to useful.
I just thought I could help with my limited experience of spending
way too much time hunting for stuff in Japanese record shops and
trying to figure out the various scenes and relations between bands.
I guess the reward is, once I realized I should have done some other
things besides shopping for CDs, that I had clues to other
interesting bands that had a sound that relates to what I already
like. Sometimes though one might find that an artist is on a small
indie label or sublabel of a major. Often one finds great stuff that
you've never heard of on the label's site unless it's some huge label
with every kind of music.

Thank you for enlightening me...I didn't realise on my first post I
would be chastised for not pigeon holing the right bands in the right
genres.
Maybe you should set an entrance exam to this group...save people the
embarrasment.
