The SICM faculty for 2007 is headlined by two of Canada's prominent young
university faculty, McGill University's Jonathan Oldengarm and the
University of Guelph's Marta McCarthy. Laureate of several international
competitions and graduate of Wilfrid Laurier and McGill University and the
Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart where he studied with Ludgar Lohman,
Jonathan Oldengarm is Associate Organist to the Church of St. Andrew and St.
Paul, Montréal, and Acting Chair of the organ and church music area of
McGill's Schulich School of Music. Marta McCarthy holds degrees in piano
and choral conducting from the University of Toronto and a Masters in Choral
Conducting from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey: she has
directed choirs and taught musicianship at the University of Guelph and
other institutions for over ten years.
In addition to daily streamed classes in organ and choral work special
sessions will be provided by returning faculty Andrew Donaldson (Rehearse -
Worship??); Bev Foster (piano); vocal technique (Lenard Whiting); musicians'
health (Barbara Paull), and a panel on writing, arranging and publishing
church music (panel discussion). Students will rehearse a present a pubic
choral concert conducted by Dr. McCarthy and enjoy a gala organ concert
performance by Dr. Oldengarm, while spending a stimulating and re-energising
week in the company of great faculty and great friends and colleagues.
Anthem reading sessions and a retail store will be provided by Music Plus of
Kitchener, Ontario.
Tuition for the week is $245 for registrations received AFTER May 1st, or
$195 if registered BEFORE May 1st. Daily tuition is $80, and onsite
accommodations and meals are available for the entire week, or daily.
Founded in 1970 by Dr. Stanley L. Osborne and directed by him until 1975 and
Dr. Kenneth Inkster until 2004, the Summer Institute is Canada's
non-denominational study and retreat week for musicians at all levels
focused on the central disciplines of the organist/choir director and
applying them and other church musical arts to a changing world. As well as
professional study and contact with great teachers and colleagues, the week
provides to students at all levels the discipline of daily chapel worship,
and a chaplaincy addressing the unique challenges and needs of the church
musical life. SICM is a registered Charitable Organisation committed to
supporting congregations in Canada and their musicians who seek vigorous,
imaginative and spiritually rich church music at the highest possible
standard.
