Dear all,

Information is just about ready for the launch of the program for the 39th Summer Institute of Church Music and the 2008 Spring “Summersong” Newsletter…

…but first, I know many of you will be interested in the announcement below, from the Southern Ontario Chapter of the Hymn Society (an organization with which SICM is allied).

Subject: Southern Ontario Chapter Blast Email - Notification of Hymn Competition, Upcoming Events

Dear members and friends of SOCHS:

I am pleased to share two news items with you:

1. SOCHS Sponsors Hymn Competition

In honour of SOCHS’ 10th year anniversary, the SOCHS Executive has announced a hymn competition on the theme of “Singing God’s Song in a Strange Land”. Please check out all of the information about this exciting development on the SOCHS website at www.sochs.org. The deadline is June 2, 2008.

I encourage you to pass news about this competition to your friends and acquaintances.

2. Free Singing Workshop at Church of the Ascension, Don Mills – Monday, March 3, 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

Lynda Marshall at Church of the Ascension, Don Mills, 33 Overland Drive, Don Mills (416)-444-8881 has informed me of an “Improving Congregational Singing” workshop with Carolynne Godin, a noted music educator. If you have a large group coming from your church, please advise her in advance at lchantson@.... Lynda tells me that last year’s event was such a success that it is being repeated this year.

Lynda writes:

This workshop is geared for amateur singers in praise teams and choirs who have no formal training but everyone is welcome, for we can all do better in our worship.

We've asked Carolynne to cover four things in the 90 minutes:
How to breathe better in singing (abdominal breathing)

How to pronounce the words better (vowels and consonants)
How to project our voices better (decrease reliance on microphones)
Encourage us in our singing - she is really good at that!

There are other items of interest on the SOCHS website. I encourage you to check them out at your earliest convenience.

George Bell
