July 5, 2006: Aaron Tan awarded first prize in 19th Biennial Osborne Organ Competition

When the distinguished jury returned to the sanctuary of St. George's Memorial Anglican Church in Oshawa from an unusually long period of deliberation after a thrilling and intriguing presentation from three of Canada’s finest young organists, Osborne Organ Competition Co-ordinator Dr. Mark Toews announced that University of Toronto engineering student Aaron Tan went home with the First Prize portion of the Florence and Stanley Osborne Scholarship in Church Music, $1500.  The Scholarship is awarded to Canada’s finest young organists in support of their church musical studies by means of a biennial organ competition in even-numbered years by Canada’s Summer Institute of Church Music.  Montrealer and current doctoral candidate at New York’s Julliard School of Music Isabelle Demers was awarded the Scholarship’s second prize, $750.

AARON TAN received his ARCT (Associateship) in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada at the age of 12. He then went on to earn his LTCL (Licentiate) diploma in Piano Performance from Trinity College of Music (London, England) when fourteen. At fifteen years old, he successfully completed his FTCL (Fellowship) diploma, also from Trinity College. In January 2004, he completed his ARCT diploma in Violin Performance.  Aaron performs regularly in the Greater Toronto Area, and has also given concerts in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.  In 2004, he began classical organ studies with Dr. John Tuttle, and has so far been a recipient of the Barwell Piano Student Scholarship a winner of the Toronto Competition for Young Organists, and a student of the Organ Academy at Stratford Summer Music, where he studied with James Edward Goettsche, official organist to the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter, in 2005.  Aaron, who currently serves as organist and choirmaster at Church of the Ascension (Anglican) in Toronto, is twenty years old, and has recently completed his third year of the Engineering Science Program at the University of Toronto.

From an impressive field of semifinal applicants four finalists were chosen (by means of  recorded performances) by a jury convened by Competition Co-ordinator Mark Toews, and including Dr. Toews, Thomas Fitches and Janet Macfarlane Peaker.  Toronto University of Toronto music student Konrad Harley also qualified, and competed as a finalist in the competition.  One other finalist selected to advance to the final withdrew in May.

The jury of the Final Round of the 19th Biennial competition was chaired by Paul Halley (English-born, Canadian educated and American resident grammy-award winning composer and former Organist of  New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine), and two other distinguished Canadian musicians, Douglas Bodle (Organist and Director of Music at Toronto’s St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and organ and vocal instructor at the Faculty of Music of the University of Toronto), and Elaine Broughton (prolific teacher, conductor and church musician, and Royal Conservatory of Music national examiner).

The prizes of the Osborne Organ Competition were endowed in 1972 by Dr. and Mrs. Stanley Osborne in support of young organists studying organ and church music at an advanced level.  It alternates in even-numbered years with a similar  competition sponsored by the Royal Canadian College of Organists in odd-numbered years, and it differs from its sister competition principally in its devotion to the art of leading congregational singing from the organ.  In addition to a single required selection by J.S. Bach (in 2006 the Leipzig Chorale Fantasia, “Komm Heiliger Geist, Herr Gott” BWV 651, and a Canadian work of the competitor’s choice, each competitor leads the audience in the singing of a hymn (in 2006 “My Soul is Filled with Joy” to the tune ‘Deer Park’).  The jury weighs the strengths of the finalists’ performances and reaches a decision on how (and whether) to award the prizes, and in certain cases, how to apportion the available prize money to recognise the achievements of the finalists.

The Osborne Organ Competition Fund of Canada’s Summer Institute of Church Music has recently been opened to receive donations from those wishing to support the extraordinary young people for whom it was created.  For more information on making a tax-deductible donation to the Osborne Organ Competition Fund, visit the Osborne pages of www.sicm.ca, the online home of Canada’s Summer Institute of Church Music or call (416) 356-3138.

May 4, 2006, Whitby, Ontario, Canada
--------------------------------------------------------
Canada's Summer Institute of Church Music announces the advancement of four finalists to the final round of its 19th Biennial Osborne Organ Competition.

The jury of prominent Toronto organists unconnected with the competitors (Dr. Mark Toews, Thomas Fitches and Janet Macfarlane Peaker) evaluated numbered cassette and CD recordings from several excellent applicants before reaching its decision on the final four, who will compete for recognition and scholarship awards in the Final Round Competition at 8:00pm on Wednesday July 5th at St. George’s Anglican Church in Oshawa during the 37th Session of Canada’s Summer Institute of Church Music (July 2-7, 2006).  Public admission to the final round of the Competition is free of charge, but donations to the Osborne Competition Fund will be warmly welcomed.

The jury awarding over $2000 in prizes will be chaired by SICM's visiting Organ Instructor, Paul Halley.

The finalists for the 19th Competition are:

Isabelle Demers (Montreal, QC)
Konrad Harley (Thornhill, ON)
Michael Oldaker (London, ON)
Aaron Tan (Toronto, ON)

The Florence and Stanley Osborne Scholarship in Church Music, established in 1972, is named for Dr. & Mrs. Stanley L. Osborne, the founding Director and ‘first lady’ of the Summer Institute of Church Music.  With the proceeds from Dr. Osborne’s popular commentary on the 1971 joint Hymn Book of the United Church of Canada and Anglican Church of Canada (If Such Holy Song (Whitby, 1976)), the couple endowed a scholarship in Church Music to be awarded by an organ competition stressing the skills of repertoire performance and hymn playing.  The Osborne Organ Competition is held biennially in even-numbered years: funds awarded support advanced study in organ and/or church music.  It is a fully blind competition: the jury chaired by the Institute’s visiting organ Instructor has no knowledge of the identity of, and no connection to, the competitors.  The past prizewinners of the competition are some of the finest performers Canada has ever produced.  Its jurors include the foremost organ performers, teachers and church musicians from throughout North America.

The Osborne Competition is currently seeking the support of donors committed to the future of organ performance and church music after the vision of Dr. & Mrs. Osborne.

For more information about the Osborne Organ Competition and Canada’s Summer Institute of Church Music visit www.sicm.ca or call (416) 356-3138.

Hello all...

Ian Sadler, our much-loved and well-reviewed visiting organ scholar at the
2005 Institute, has advised me of a multimedia program he and his wife,
soprano Catharine Sadler, have prepared in observance of the 250th
anniversary of Mozart's birth.

It looks to me like a great program, and perhaps just as importantly, a
great deal for the presenting church, concert society or other group feeling
this concept fits with their year's activity.

Please feel free to contact Ian directly (at sadlermus@...) about
this opportunity, and/or to forward this message to your colleagues who
might be interested in presenting the program.

SICM 2006, featuring Paul Halley and hosting the 19th biennial Osborne Organ
Competition, is now pretty much confimred... Stand by for our impending
website launch and news release.

Best always,

The Summer Institute of Church Music has awarded the Florence and Stanley Osborne Scholarship in Church Music by means of an Organ Competition biennially since 1972: its laureates are the finest young performers Canada has ever produced and it has disbursed thousands of dollars worth of support to students pursuing advanced study in Church Music.

Entrants must be Canadian citizens under the age of 30 on January 1st 2006, and must never have been awarded first prize in any previous Osborne Organ Competition.  An semi-final taped round will narrow entrants to a short list of two or three, who will compete in the final round on Wednesday July 5th at St. George's Anglican Church in Oshawa, Ontario during the Institute's 37th Session.

First Prize is $1500 and second is $750: these prizes will be awarded at the discretion of a jury chaired by SICM's visiting Organ Scholar, Paul Halley. Beginning with this Session the Competition Co-ordinator is Dr. Mark Toews, Director of Music at Lawrence Park Community Church in Toronto and former President of the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

The 2006 brochure is attached.  NOTE THAT THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF THE APPLICATION FORM AND OTHER MATERIALS FOR THE SEMI-FINAL ROUND HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO APRIL 15 DUE TO A PRINTING DELAY.

Visit www.sicm.ca and follow the Osborne link for full details on repertoire and other requirements, as well as the history of the competition, and most of its past winners and jury chairs.

Best wishes for 2006 to all. Memories of the 2005 SICM still replay in
my mind giving me a continued yearning for a repeat of such a
wonderful week of music study. I wonder whether the event will be
again repeated in the Summer of 2006. My own schedule is getting
booked up, and I fear that I will not be able to attend if the
2006-SICM is in the first week of July.
In any event, perhaps early publicity will again yield a full
complement of attendees. Last year was just GREAT!! I had heard about
it in the RCCO newsletter.

Dear all,

My apologies for the intrusion, and please don't hesitate to tell me if you would rather not have received this notice - I am trying to attract a diverse selection of experience to an aspect of my graduate project on Musical Genre, and thought it might interest you anyway.

This Wednesday November 9, 2005, at 9 o'clock AM EST a weekly 30-minute broadcast called "GENRE IMPLOSION" I'm producing and hosting on CFMU 93.3 FM (Hamilton, Ontario Canada, a Community Radio Station run by the McMaster University Student Union).  Since the vast majority of recipients of this note live outside the CFMU listening area, you can find the broadcast live at 9 o'clock on Wednesdays (LIVE - not recorded: for copyright reasons there is no download or podcast link) at www.cfmu.mcmaster.ca.  The show is a presentation of diverse musical material, properties and ideas that cross lines of genre distinction - so be ready to listen to a fair amount of music you don't know... but to consider what you already know (and may even like) about it.

Whether you're able to tune in or not, pay a visit to the project website at www.genreimplosion.ca - while still under construction as my thesis project unfolds it is a collecting point for various bits of my research on Musical Genre in postmodern times, and the ideas I am putting forward in the project.  There is a short online survey I'd love as much response to as possible - it is a very unscientific attempt to track people's experience of the Musical Genre system (or phenomenon or construction), which is so semantically, politically and economically central to our musical world.

Thanks for your time!

C, E-flat, and G go into a bar. The bartender says: "Sorry, but we don't serve minors." So the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open fifth between them. After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and the G is out flat. An F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.

D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying, "Excuse me. I'll just be a second." Then an A comes into the bar, but the bartender is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor.

Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and exclaims, "Get out now. You're the seventh minor I've found in this bar tonight."

The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back to the bar the next night in a 3-piece suit with nicely shined shoes. The bartender (who used to have a nice corporate job until his company downsized) says, "You're looking sharp tonight, come on in! This could be a major development."

This proves to be the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and everything else, and stands there au natural.

Eventually, the C sobers up, and realizes in horror that he's under a rest. The C is brought to trial, is found guilty of contributing to the diminution of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of DS without Coda at an upscale correctional facility. On appeal, however, the C is found innocent of any wrongdoing, even accidental, and that all accusations to the contrary are bassless.

The bartender decides, however, that since he's only had tenor so patrons, and the soprano in the bathroom, everything has become all too much treble; he needs a rest, and closes the bar.

Dear Friends,

The first Chapel Service of the Summer Institute of Church Music's 2005 Session will be dedicated to the memory of our former Registrar, the late Ernest-R. Tetreault, who passed away last fall.  Some of you in the Whitby area and not attending the Institute this year, or not attending that particular day, may wish to join us.

We are delighted to be welcoming at that time Joan Tetreault from Ottawa, former SICM Director Dr. Kenneth Inkster from Alliston, and as guest organist, longtime friend and clinician of SICM, Dr. Fred Graham from Toronto.  SICM's 2005 Chaplain The Rev. Canon Tim Elliott will officiate.

The service begins at 8:30am on Monday July 4th, 2005 in the Chapel of Trafalgar Castle School, 401 Reynolds Street (3 blocks east of Highway 12/Brock Street on Gilbert).  A time of visiting and refreshments will follow in the School Dining Hall.

Whitby, Ontario:
NANCY TELFER joins the faculty of the Summer Institute of Church Music's 36th session,
3-8 July 2005

The Board of Governors of the Summer Institute of Church Music is delighted to welcome back to SICM Ontario composer, pianist and choral musician Nancy Telfer.

Nancy Telfer is a Canadian composer who has been a choral clinician and guest conductor for many provincial, national, and state organizations throughout Canada and the United States. For many years she has presented workshops on vocal production to both choral conductors and singers. Since 1979 Telfer has composed over 260 works for soloists, chamber ensembles, orchestra, bands, pianists, and choirs, most of which are published in Canada and the United States. Her music ranges from beginning to virtuoso levels and she has been commissioned to compose music for many fine performers. She believes that all music should delight the ears, capture the imagination of the mind, and feed the soul.

Telfer will lead choral clinics supplementary to the main Institute choral sessions, and so joins organ instructor Ian Sadler, choral instructor Ann Cooper Gay, Chaplain The Rev. Canon Tim Elliott, Institute Director Christopher Dawes and workshop leaders Andrew Donaldson, Bev Foster, Michael O'Connor and Judy Pringle in comprising the Institute's largest ever faculty.  For complete information on the SICM 2005 program and faculty, visit the SICM web site at www.sicm.ca and follow the "2005" menu button.

The Summer Institute of Church Music was founded by Canadian minister and musician Dr. Stanley L. Osborne in 1970, while he was principal of the Ontario Ladies College (now Trafalgar Castle School).  For 35 years it has brought Canadian church musicians together with the finest organists, choral directors and thinkers in the North American field of church music, and looks forward to its upcoming 36th session at Trafalgar Castle School in Whitby, July 3rd to 8th 2005.

Hello, all!

Linda Pace's mailing of the SICM brochure took place on the last weekend in April, and as I have now returned from overseas, the registrations have already become flowing in.

So, of course, have the returned envelopes (only 18 in about 500, a very good rate considering the list covers many years of SICM registrants), so I am taking advantage of the networks of the Board of Directors and the membership of the new SICM e-mail list to see whether you can help

If you could help me can find out the loction (or other status like deceased or no longer interested) of any of the following (listed with their last known location), I would be very grateful:
