This is my first post - please accept my apologies if this is not new or useful
information.
I have a version of the "Barging into the presence of god" demo tape that is
slightly different to the one pictured on the palesaints.co.uk website:
- it only has 3 tracks: The Sight Of You, She Rides The Waves, Colours and
Shapes. The track listing is on bits of paper stuck on the inlay so I guess they
were initially printed with the original track listing then had the new list
stuck on.
- it has a different cover, black background with the image taking up about
half the front.
It was sent to my Uncle's recording studio/record label - they didn't end up
working with him and he passed the tape on to me as he thought I would like it.
I have put some photos on http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w7/d_n_clegg/pale_saints/
happy for them to be downloaded and put up on palesaints.co.uk if they are of
sufficient interest. I can supply higher res versions (and one without the
address/phone number blurred out) if required.
Sorry again if this is old news - if it is of interest I could convert them to
MP3 if people wanted to see if the 3 versions on here were different from the
version on the other demo tape (although the date of recording is the same so
they are probably the same versions)
As for mp3 copies, I'd surely love to hear it. So if it's not too much
extra work, that would be cool.
Just curious:
What was your uncle's studio/label...?
Bye,
Stefan

I have put the MP3s in the Files section of the group's page.
Probably not great sound quality as I had to drop the bitrate down to
get the filesize below yahoo's limit (and also because the only
working cassette player I had isn't that great...)
Track #2 (She Rides The Waves) is just silent noise, though...
The basic sound of Sight Of You is pretty similar to what ended up on
the official Barging... EP later.
I think I remember reading somewhere (on the EP cover?) that they took
the demo and reworked it somewhat, does anyone remember?
Too lazy to go downstairs and fetch the record cover now... ;-)
Bye,
Stefan

Ah, sorry about that - first time using audacity - the source project
file also appears blank, sorry about that, not sure what I did! Glad
the others are OK though. Sorry I've recently got rid of all my vinyl
so can't check the record covers.

I just did, the cover says:
"SIGHT OF YOU and SHE RIDES THE WAVES originally produced and recorded
at Woodhouse Studios, Leeds, by Richard Formby and Mike Stout, Nov-Dec
1988"
So the studio and date match (though not the engineer's name...), and
so I guess this demo (or at least some backing tracks of it) could be
the base of the EP version.
Would have to do a direct A/B comparison to be sure, but have to get
my daughter to bed now. ;-)
this is from memory, but I'm almost certain it was the same recordings, just remixed a bit.
Incidentally, Richard Formby ended up playing guitar with the Pale Saints a few times when Ashley Horner left the band, back around 1988 - I've got some photos when he was with them, when they played York on my site!
Actually, I could just drop Graeme or Ian an email, as that would tell us once and for all... but from memory I'm certain they're the same recordings, unlike, say, Lush, whose demo they sent to 4AD sounded completely different to what ended up on Scar!

Yeah, though I think Gil Norton also added some overdubs at Blackwing
in London. And maybe the vocals were worked on there, too.
But the demo definitely has the same "feel".
Boy, what a great EP that was. I still remember how I first heard it
on a late night Northern Germany radio program (Alan Bangs was the
host and usually played cool new stuff from England).
