So we saw some right ribald shows last year on the 30 Years Live shows, so what
has been your worst, or 'the' worst?

Hi All

All SM gigs are the best gigs aren't they???

So many memories to choose from for so many different reasons.

Milton Keynes 86, The Longest day, first ever gig right at the front for opener
Waterfront, was to be a defining moment in my life where I wanted that feeling
to last forever, the ground shaking under all the energy the crowd made, the
stage vibrating from the this massive wall of sound, easily one of my top 10
greatest moments of my life.

Albert Hall 2002 both shows for playing Chelsea Girl & Life In A Day, songs I
never never expected the band to perform in front of me. Both nights musically
where probably the best I had ever seen the band play & what a setlist each
night too. Very special nights.

Manchester Apollo again 2002, possibly my favourite SM tour, but hung around
backstage to meet the band & JK came out headed straight towards me & said "Hey
this guy had a great time tonight!!!" maybe because I was swinging my flag
around my head all through the gig. Anyhow the moment got to much for me & I
couldn't get any words out of my mouth, I was dumbfoundedly starstruck for the
only time in my life & I have met a lot of pop / rock stars. JK headed towards
some japanese girls & my moment was lost :-(

Finally have to mention Nottingham Rock City 2006, when this gig was anounced I
really really did think this was the end for SM, playing such a bunch of small
intimate venues. Rock City is a 2000 standing capacity venue & well known for as
part of the indie toilet circuit I managed to get right near the front where I
managed to video most of the gig. Seeing Out The Angel being a particular
highlight.

http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=GiaHWP915l0

http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=de0l5nI0l- g

Finally a very special mention for the Sheffield Arena gig 2008 where I finally
managed to get a press pass & photographed my favourite band in the press pit in
front of 10,000 people. Not my favourite gig in the world but career wise, after
Glastonbury one of my career highlights!! !

http://www.egigs. co.uk/index. php?p=1807& d=2008-12- 01

I was hoping to get to the Isle of Wright show this year but that couldn't
happen so hopefully they will play another english festival so I can finally
catch them at a festival.

I would like to add that I have seen the band more than the twice I have listed.
I will try and work out the concerts I have been to. It will be nowhere near the
numbers that some of you "superfans" have been to.

Hi All,
Well, the polling station has officially closed on this topic, but don't let

1. Beacon Theatre, NYC - Sparkle in the Rain Tour - 1984

An incredibly intimate feeling for a venue that packed in 1,550 concertgoers.

2. Madison Square Garden, NYC - Opening for The Pretenders.

Quite possibly the last time anyone got a chance to see Simple Minds as the
"opening act." A real treat.

3. Radio City Music Hall - Once Upon A Time Tour - 1985

Great lighting, phenomenal sound, and had that re-worked version of "Speed Your
Love to Me."

Excellent review and love to hear that eddie enjoyed a bra or two.
Maybe donna can get hers off in the UK !

The pics in the news links are great and to sell the gig out is great
for the people of split.

Great show. Receptive and altogether a very satisfied audience. I

Hi,

I have been to some concerts in the past.
The best SM by far was the Werchter show in Belgium somewhere in the 89's.
There was an atmosphere as something devine was hanging all over the crowd.
Lou Reed came next on the festival, but we left.
Wanted to capture the feeling of the moment and it worked !!!!
I also was in the Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam, when The Silencers were
the support act.
There must be more of you who went to these shows ???

All the best,
jimbo.

Seeing Out The Angel being a particular
highlight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiaHWP915l0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de0l5nI0l-g

Finally a very special mention for the Sheffield Arena gig 2008 where I finally
managed to get a press pass & photographed my favourite band in the press pit in
front of 10,000 people. Not my favourite gig in the world but career wise, after
Glastonbury one of my career highlights!!!

http://www.egigs.co.uk/index.php?p=1807&d=2008-12-01

I was hoping to get to the Isle of Wright show this year but that couldn't
happen so hopefully they will play another english festival so I can finally
catch them at a festival.

I don't want to write in this thread, as I only saw Simple Minds in like:

Barcelona, Palau Sant Jordi, Real Life Tour, summer 1991;
Barcelona, Palau Olímpic Vall d'Hebron, summer 1995;
Silla (València), Camp Municipal de Futbol, spring 2001;
Barcelona, Explanada Palau Sant Jordi, Alive and Kicking Tour, summer 2003;
Barcelona, Razzmatazz, Black and White Tour, winter 2006;
Edinburgh, Castle Explanade, The Day of the Flood July 2009 :)

And next, it will be Razzmatazz again next Tuesday. See: only 6 + 1
times. And you, guys, have seen them dozens of times. I'm blushing :)

Best,

Á.

Hi,My Best Simple Minds Gig has to be Newcastle City Hall
20/04/2002......I had tickets for the 2nd row,Which was amazing,But i managed
to squeeze in
to the front row and actually ended up standing next to the stage. When Jim
came on stage i was the only one who leaned forward and stretched out me
hand to him,And to my surprise Jim held onto my hand for about 30
seconds,Where i asked him "if he was alright" (Didn't know what else to
say...lol)
and Jim answered while looking at me "Yeah ! I'm doing OK" ........What a
Buzz Jim Kerr talking to me...............A Concert i'll never forget :)

As the 'how many times' question sparked some interesting replies it would be
great to hear views on the best gig you've seen !!
For me it changes regularly. My ranking:
1. Paris 1991
2. Glasgow SECC 1989
3. Zeebrugge 1997
4. Dublin 1995
5. Belfast 2008
6. Milton Keynes 1986
7. Mandela 1988
8. Loreley 1991
9. Amsterdam 2006
10. Birmingham NEC 1989

Counting down 2 weeks to Brussels. I've never been but remember 20 years ago
constantly playing Brussels bootlegs and the crowd and gig were always amazing.

Hello,

I did a count a few years back and realised that I had lost count after 43 gigs.
A respectable tally but sadly all UK or Europe - never got as far as Australia

And first...Leeds Roundhay Park - brings tears to my eyes just thinking about
it.

Hey Dave, Everyone,

It's always interesting to read where people have seen Simple Minds, etc...

I started paying attention to Simple Minds when I was 11 years old... around the
time of the Breakfast Club. Yet, I was into heavier rock and didn't start buying
their music until I got a hold of a tape, while in the Dominican Republic as a
Mormon missionary (you're not encouraged to listen to much while you're on a
mission but music was too big a part of my personal fabric!). I got a greatest
hits collection. I was so busy after I went back to the US and lost track of any
new releases until I moved to the UK for my postgraduate education in 2003 - I
was a fan before, but in the UK I became a devout follower.

I first got tickets to see them in Glasgow that year - but missed the train. So
I got tickets to see them in Manchester a few weeks later, then in Newcastle.
Since then I have seen them at Blickling Hall twice, at Wembley, at Princess
Street in Edinburgh (just below the Castle), Edinburgh Castle, Glasgow, Belfast
(Simple Minds in Belfast is QUITE an experience - amazing), etc. I have missed
one show I had tickets for: the Proms in Belgium - I never had enough to
actually travel from the US, where I was at the time; and once at the Produced
by Trevor Horn concert in 2004: Simple Minds cancelled due to illness. That's 11
times. Now I split my time between the US and the UK and have tickets to see
them in Newcastle in a couple of weeks. My wife and I plan to go to Belfast too
- so, so far 11 times - by the end of the year between 12 and 13.

I have been to over 300 concerts in my lifetime, including Live 8, Concert for
Diana - some big ones. Simple Minds is by far one of the best bands live. Well
the best, in my view, since Pink Floyd no longer tours and is unlikely to since
the passing of Richard Wright. Journey, is another band in that live performance
league.

It's disappointing that the US is so enamored with cheap Reality TV produced
artists - and calling them artists is a stretch. How Simple Minds doesn't have a
HUGE market or how record labels in the US haven't caught on is beyond me.
There's no doubt in my mind Simple Minds will have a truly global and
international resurgence soon - one that spans the American market again. I'm
just glad current management wised up and they are selling recordings of the
shows right after the shows!

I really hope the band gets feedback from this from time-to-time: one of the
band's best sets was the one on the 2003 tour. The set list I just saw now is
GREAT - the one from Vienna a few nights ago? Book of Brilliant Things and One
Step Closer should always be on the set list - plus some of the tracks they
haven't even touched in years. I know some fans didn't like Neapolis but I
personally think it was one of their best albums and it'd be great if they
played War Babies now and then. In any case, let's hope they stick to this set
for a while!

at Easter" is playing, Jim yells "Open up!" and the curtain pulls open. It was
brilliant.

Hi All

My local pub when I worked in Glasgow was the Doune Castle in Shawlands. I
remember the night a band called Johnny & the Self Abusers played the downstairs
club in 1977. I went downstairs to have a listen and lasted 30 seconds before I
went back up to my mates in the restaurant. They were dreadfull, I was not
really into punk at that time.
Fast forward a year and I was going out with a trainee journalist and she
dragged me to The Mars Bar in St Enoch Square in Glasgow to see this new band
Simple Minds. Although I thought they were not bad, I never held out much hope
for them to be a success. There were just so many good bands in Glasgow at that
time.
I was not until I heard I Travel & Celebrate did I actually realise what a great
band they are.
I love it when people ask these sort of questions. It is interesting to hear
when people got turned on to Simple Minds. I does not matter how long you have
been a fan. Whether you have been a fan from the first album or only picked up
on the band from Black and White or Grafitti Soul, what matters is that you are
part of something special. Simple Minds are, in my humble opinion one of the
best bands in the world. It is always a great occaision to see them live.
Sometimes you get a great performance, sometimes you don't...... thats life!
Looking forward to Glasgow next month, hopefully meet some like minded fans
there.
Before some of my mates on this list ask..... yes I have been drinking!!!! !

Keep rockin'

Ronnie.

Hi All,
With all this talk about the new gigs it came to me that the last time I saw
imple Minds was in July of 2004 at Guilfest, just outside of London.
The last time I counted up all the times I've seen them, the number came to
3. I'll never forget the first time I saw them, in May of 1984 at the

So I thought I might add a new thread, not to make Simple Minds fans
ompetitive with each other, but just for fun: How many times have you seen
imple Minds in concert, and when and where was the first time?
And if you've never seen them, then chime in with your name and whereabouts.
ho knows? Maybe they'll play in your locale someday.

Actually Dave you miss read my gig January 14th 1985 was my 50th show, inc all 8
nights in a row at Hammersmith Odeon, and seeing the FA Cup Final on the final
night, afternoon at Wembley with my uncle a Watford fan, they lost 2-0. My first
was infact 19th April 1979 supporting Magazine, whom at the time were my fave
band, and just been to see a few times this year again.

personally think it was one of their best albums and it'd be great if they
played War Babies now and then. In any case, let's hope they stick to this set
for a while!

Indeed was a great show, mind you the tour was brill, except the night I went to
Brum only to find it cancelled due to Jim losing his voice, mind it added a
whole host of extra shows which went to inc the 8 nights at Hammersmith, the
doorman knew by the end of the week, was so funny first night arriving at gig
with a suitcase with a camera and old tape recorder within- didn't even get
searched lol.

Even Silent Running were pretty good, even if the drummer broke his leg mid tour
too and still played. Only thing was Jim's banter with audience was pretty samey
each of those nights, except the final Saturday when he asked who'd been to all
8 not many it seemed lol

Hi Steve,

I'm in shock...someone else that was at the De Montfort Hall way back in '84!!!
I have to add that this gig, was in fact my first one ever, as someone just shy
of turning 14.

Amongst my recollections of the gig were of the crowd being really,
really boisterous, to the point where Jim, when he used to introduce & preface
some of the songs (as opposed to just saying what the next song is, as he does
now), demanded that crowd should "Be quiet!" & "Shut up!" on a number of
occasions.

"Waterfront" even contained lyrics from Norman Greenbaum's (& subsequently, Dr &
The Medics!) "Spirit in The Sky" - particularly relevant for me, since the
Greenbaum version was the UK no.1 single when I was born - selfishly, I think of
it as a dedication of sorts!

And whilst I love the 'slow' version of "New Gold Dream" from 'LITCOL', I will
never, ever forget the turbo-charged version they played at the De Mont, laced
with lyrics from Talking Heads' version of the Al Green song, "Take Me To The
River", & the Doors' "Light My Fire" (as was common throughout that tour).

Indeed, when Jim was singing the line "C'mon baby light my fire!", & then
repeated "Fire! Fire!", I remember it sounding more like a celebration of fire,
rather than something to fear!

Whilst the Minds have never let me down when I've seen them live, I'm convinced
Jim (& the rest of the band) were spurred on to new heights by the crowd that
night - there were times when Jim was just absorbed in the songs, prowling
around the stage & looking like he was taking numerous run-ups & threatening to
make that final glorious leap into the crowd, but perhaps thankfully for
himself, he never did.

Forbes particularly, was in a world of his own, bouncing up & down, & not
content with staying to the left of Jim - one second he would be next to Mel,
the next, having a joke with Charlie by his shoulder.

To say I walked out of the venue that night absolutely buzzing & ten feet tall,
would be an understatement.

Heady, heady days!

Cheers,

Ajay

I always sign everything with an 'X' lol, and you'd be throwing darts at my pic.
Ajay, I remember that night well as I was standing on the shoulders of two my
mates down the front, who promptly dropped me by the time Jim started singing
the first lines of 'Waterfront', much to the amusement to most of my trip I ran
from Corby that night.

Belfast (Simple Minds in Belfast is QUITE an experience - amazing), etc. I have
missed one show I had tickets for: the Proms in Belgium - I never had enough to
actually travel from the US, where I was at the time; and once at the Produced
by Trevor Horn concert in 2004: Simple Minds cancelled due to illness. That's 11
times. Now I split my time between the US and the UK and have tickets to see
them in Newcastle in a couple of weeks. My wife and I plan to go to Belfast too
- so, so far 11 times - by the end of the year between 12 and 13.

Well the best, in my view, since Pink Floyd no longer tours and is unlikely to
since the passing of Richard Wright. Journey, is another band in that live
performance league.

international resurgence soon - one that spans the American market again. I'm
just glad current management wised up and they are selling recordings of the
shows right after the shows!

Hi All,

Every morning from 9 a.m. until 10 a.mm. WNYC-FM here in New York broadcasts the
BBC Newshour. At exactly the halfway point WNYC-FM momentarily cuts away for
station identification and in the background it sounds like they're using one of
the mixes of "Hypnotised" as the background music.

This happens Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m. New York time, 2:30 p.m. in the
U.K.

Could anyone either verify or say "Close, but not cigar." on this background
music?

Well, here's one time when I can chime in with phenomenal personal experience;
it was when Simple Minds played Madison Square Garden on August 7th, 1984
because they were opening for The Pretenders!

I felt like the only person in Madison Square Garden who attended just for
Simple Minds. They ran out onstage and immediately began with "Up on the
Catwalk"!

So yes, it was a "secret tour" of sorts!

By the way, I believe that after the U.S. tour, the two groups played Europe
with The Pretenders opening for Simple Minds!
