The Mandela gig I was disapointed as I had hoped SM would have performed more of
their own stuff, this was a year they didn't tour. whilst I didn't mind Little
Steven coming on I felt he should have done this is during his own slot & maybe
dragged SM out instead..

To be honest after Sm I don't really remember much of that day as I think I got
completely hammered & cannot remember very much of Stevie Wonder's set at
all.... What a muppet I was doh!!!!

Still at least I don't recall much of Whitney Houston's set either, every cloud
and all that lol....

saw it appropriate that the composer of that song should feature at such a
momentous event.

well. Certainly didn't hold back in terms of the politics, unlike so many of the
acts on the day, who just saw it as a 'birthday party' occasion.

of with the mixing up of the NGD segment. Some songs reqorked & others as there
original state. I would have preferred them all to have been in their original
state

Hi All

All SM gigs are the best gigs aren't they???

So many memories to choose from for so many different reasons.

Milton Keynes 86, The Longest day, first ever gig right at the front for opener
Waterfront, was to be a defining moment in my life where I wanted that feeling
to last forever, the ground shaking under all the energy the crowd made, the
stage vibrating from the this massive wall of sound, easily one of my top 10
greatest moments of my life.

Albert Hall 2002 both shows for playing Chelsea Girl & Life In A Day, songs I
never never expected the band to perform in front of me. Both nights musically
where probably the best I had ever seen the band play & what a setlist each
night too. Very special nights.

Manchester Apollo again 2002, possibly my favourite SM tour, but hung around
backstage to meet the band & JK came out headed straight towards me & said "Hey
this guy had a great time tonight!!!" maybe because I was swinging my flag
around my head all through the gig. Anyhow the moment got to much for me & I
couldn't get any words out of my mouth, I was dumbfoundedly starstruck for the
only time in my life & I have met a lot of pop / rock stars. JK headed towards
some japanese girls & my moment was lost :-(

Finally have to mention Nottingham Rock City 2006, when this gig was anounced I
really really did think this was the end for SM, playing such a bunch of small
intimate venues. Rock City is a 2000 standing capacity venue & well known for as
part of the indie toilet circuit I managed to get right near the front where I
managed to video most of the gig. Seeing Out The Angel being a particular
highlight.

Finally a very special mention for the Sheffield Arena gig 2008 where I finally
managed to get a press pass & photographed my favourite band in the press pit in
front of 10,000 people. Not my favourite gig in the world but career wise, after
Glastonbury one of my career highlights!! !

1.  Beacon Theatre, NYC - Sparkle in the Rain Tour - 1984

An incredibly intimate feeling for a venue that packed in 1,550 concertgoers.



2.  Madison Square Garden, NYC - Opening for The Pretenders.

Quite possibly the last time anyone got a chance to see Simple Minds as the
"opening act."  A real treat.



3.  Radio City Music Hall - Once Upon A Time Tour - 1985

Great lighting, phenomenal sound, and had that re-worked version of "Speed Your
Love to Me."

couldn't really hear of find any negative of half-heartened comment
related to the band's performance. Jim's voice, although a little bit
weakened by a flu, was still sufficient. He communicated with the
crowd, bullsh***ing a lot, and the crowd liked it :-) The rest of the
band was also great. People were of course mostly high on Don't You,
Alive and Kicking, New Gold Dream, Ghostdancing. Eddie walked miles
around the stage, in one moment some girl threw a bra on him. Charlie,
mostly moving around his pedals but smiling all the time and sounding
uniquely and ingeniously. The other two were of course a little bit
behind the scene, but producing superb rhythm and sounds.

Hi,

I have been to some concerts in the past.
The best SM by far was the Werchter show in Belgium somewhere in the 89's.
There was an atmosphere as something devine was hanging all over the crowd.
Lou Reed came next on the festival, but we left.
Wanted to capture the feeling of the moment and it worked  !!!!
I also was in the Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam, when The Silencers were
the support act.
There must be more of you who went to these shows ???

All SM gigs are the best gigs aren't they???

So many memories to choose from for so many different reasons.

Milton Keynes 86, The Longest day, first ever gig right at the front for opener
Waterfront, was to be a defining moment in my life where I wanted that feeling
to last forever, the ground shaking under all the energy the crowd made, the
stage vibrating from the this massive wall of sound, easily one of my top 10
greatest moments of my life.

Albert Hall 2002 both shows for playing Chelsea Girl & Life In A Day, songs I
never never expected the band to perform in front of me. Both nights musically
where probably the best I had ever seen the band play & what a setlist each
night too. Very special nights.

Manchester Apollo again 2002, possibly my favourite SM tour, but hung around
backstage to meet the band & JK came out headed straight towards me & said "Hey
this guy had a great time tonight!!!" maybe because I was swinging my flag
around my head all through the gig. Anyhow the moment got to much for me & I
couldn't get any words out of my mouth, I was dumbfoundedly starstruck for the
only time in my life & I have met a lot of pop / rock stars. JK headed towards
some japanese girls & my moment was lost :-(

Finally have to mention Nottingham Rock City 2006, when this gig was anounced I
really really did think this was the end for SM, playing such a bunch of small
intimate venues. Rock City is a 2000 standing capacity venue & well known for as
part of the indie toilet circuit I managed to get right near the front where I
managed to video most of the gig. Seeing Out The Angel being a particular
highlight.

Finally a very special mention for the Sheffield Arena gig 2008 where I finally
managed to get a press pass & photographed my favourite band in the press pit in
front of 10,000 people. Not my favourite gig in the world but career wise, after
Glastonbury one of my career highlights!!!

It's always interesting to read where people have seen Simple Minds, etc...

I started paying attention to Simple Minds when I was 11 years old... around the
time of the Breakfast Club. Yet, I was into heavier rock and didn't start buying
their music until I got a hold of a tape, while in the Dominican Republic as a
Mormon missionary (you're not encouraged to listen to much while you're on a
mission but music was too big a part of my personal fabric!). I got a greatest
hits collection. I was so busy after I went back to the US and lost track of any
new releases until I moved to the UK for my postgraduate education in 2003 - I
was a fan before, but in the UK I became a devout follower.

I first got tickets to see them in Glasgow that year - but missed the train. So
I got tickets to see them in Manchester a few weeks later, then in Newcastle.
Since then I have seen them at Blickling Hall twice, at Wembley, at Princess
Street in Edinburgh (just below the Castle), Edinburgh Castle, Glasgow, Belfast
(Simple Minds in Belfast is QUITE an experience - amazing), etc. I have missed
one show I had tickets for: the Proms in Belgium - I never had enough to
actually travel from the US, where I was at the time; and once at the Produced
by Trevor Horn concert in 2004: Simple Minds cancelled due to illness. That's 11
times. Now I split my time between the US and the UK and have tickets to see
them in Newcastle in a couple of weeks. My wife and I plan to go to Belfast too
- so, so far 11 times - by the end of the year between 12 and 13.

I have been to over 300 concerts in my lifetime, including Live 8, Concert for
Diana - some big ones. Simple Minds is by far one of the best bands live. Well
the best, in my view, since Pink Floyd no longer tours and is unlikely to since
the passing of Richard Wright. Journey, is another band in that live performance
league.

It's disappointing that the US is so enamored with cheap Reality TV produced
artists - and calling them artists is a stretch. How Simple Minds doesn't have a
HUGE market or how record labels in the US haven't caught on is beyond me.
There's no doubt in my mind Simple Minds will have a truly global and
international resurgence soon - one that spans the American market again. I'm
just glad current management wised up and they are selling recordings of the
shows right after the shows!

I really hope the band gets feedback from this from time-to-time: one of the
band's best sets was the one on the 2003 tour. The set list I just saw now is
GREAT - the one from Vienna a few nights ago? Book of Brilliant Things and One
Step Closer should always be on the set list - plus some of the tracks they
haven't even touched in years. I know some fans didn't like Neapolis but I
personally think it was one of their best albums and it'd be great if they
played War Babies now and then. In any case, let's hope they stick to this set
for a while!

My local pub when I worked in Glasgow was the Doune Castle in Shawlands. I
remember the night a band called Johnny & the Self Abusers played the downstairs
club in 1977. I went downstairs to have a listen and lasted 30 seconds before I
went back up to my mates in the restaurant. They were dreadfull, I was not
really into punk at that time.
Fast forward a year and I was going out with a trainee journalist and she
dragged me to The Mars Bar in St Enoch Square in Glasgow to see this new band
Simple Minds. Although I thought they were not bad, I never held out much hope
for them to be a success. There were just so many good bands in Glasgow at that
time.
I was not until I heard I Travel & Celebrate did I actually realise what a great
band they are.
I love it when people ask these sort of questions. It is interesting to hear
when people got turned on to Simple Minds. I does not matter how long you have
been a fan. Whether you have been a fan from the first album or only picked up
on the band from Black and White or Grafitti Soul, what matters is that you are
part of something special. Simple Minds are, in my humble opinion one of the
best bands in the world. It is always a great occaision to see them live.
Sometimes you get a great performance, sometimes you don't...... thats life!
Looking forward to Glasgow next month, hopefully meet some like minded fans
there.
Before some of my mates on this list ask..... yes I have been drinking!!!! !

  City Channel in Dublin last night showed a 30min prog called "Behind the

OMD, they showed about 20mins of The Minds live from this year / last year and
10mins of old OMD vids...
it was to promote the up coming Dublin Gig in the O2 on Dec 9th .....

For those of you in Ireland keep an eye as this might be repeated !!!

Actually Dave you miss read my gig January 14th 1985 was my 50th show, inc all 8
nights in a row at Hammersmith Odeon, and seeing the FA Cup Final on the final
night, afternoon at Wembley with my uncle a Watford fan, they lost 2-0. My first
was infact 19th April 1979 supporting Magazine, whom at the time were my fave
band, and just been to see a few times this year again.

Since then I have seen them at Blickling Hall twice, at Wembley, at Princess
Street in Edinburgh (just below the Castle), Edinburgh Castle, Glasgow, Belfast
(Simple Minds in Belfast is QUITE an experience - amazing), etc. I have missed
one show I had tickets for: the Proms in Belgium - I never had enough to
actually travel from the US, where I was at the time; and once at the Produced
by Trevor Horn concert in 2004: Simple Minds cancelled due to illness. That's 11
times. Now I split my time between the US and the UK and have tickets to see
them in Newcastle in a couple of weeks. My wife and I plan to go to Belfast too
- so, so far 11 times - by the end of the year between 12 and 13.

There's no doubt in my mind Simple Minds will have a truly global and
international resurgence soon - one that spans the American market again. I'm
just glad current management wised up and they are selling recordings of the
shows right after the shows!
