hellooo
I like introductions so I guess I should expand my first one.
   I'm from Chicago, I'm 17. I like Belle & Sebastian,Stuart Murdoch(heh),
Travis, and lately I've been getting into Francois Hardy. I also like old novels
and foreign films. Anyone seen Autmn Tale yet? was going to today but ran out of
time. And that's it basically.
By the way, Ooberman...what do they sound like and are they good?
  Bye,
  michelle

aimed at jennifer the oboe playing student in hull~ yeah shorely wall often
produces a teardrop or 2, especially "that" ending. ooberman are quite quite
special i think. blossoms falling is perfection. million suns is gorgeous.
when summer's gone is heartfelt and precious. if the ooberman album is half
as good as any of these songs i will be as happy as someone called 'larry'.
i like messy hair. hair is quite funny. i have short hair that is scruffy
and all over the place. i dont really like combs and stuff. that is all i
can think of. . . byebye . . from al

oh, now someone else has done the description thing i don't feel nearly so
awkward.well, here goes....
i'm a student from Hull called Jennifer (but sometimes Jenny) who likes music
and things such as that....my favourite bands are Belle and Seb, Mercury Rev ,
Flaming Lips, Mogwai, Ooberman, and am a come-lately fan of the Tindersticks.Jsu
a thought, does anyone else always cry at Shorely Wall..probably not, its just
me and my damn melancholy.......i don't have a seratonin smile (well only on
weekends) but i do have incredibly messy hair (it is a sunday morning
afterall)and thats about it....apart from the fact that a have a friend called
Isobel, and am exremely jealous, but its not too bad, cos theres always
Photojenny..tee hee.I think thats it now, oh by the way, i play recorder, oboe,
and a variety of novelty type instruments and i also play the guitar (very badly
mind you) i do sing a little, but only when the old larynx is up to it.now that
really is it.theres me....sorry about the lack of punctuation and/or grammar.

you know there are some websites that will allow you to type in the words
you want and spit out a number of phrases. if anyone comes up with anything
too great we'll either know that they are a genius or a cheater. not that i
would ever insinuate the later. bill...email me and tell me if jason ever
got my gentle waves cd unstuck from his cd player...i should be up there
next friday...is sinbad's serving felafils again? i know i should email him
seperate..but two birds with one stone. love sw

high. er..since introductions seem to be getting a bit trendy around these
parts i thought i'd jump on the bandwagon and say hello. im a lazy gett
(student) in london and i like quite a lot of music. radiohead, cocteau
twins, jeff buckley, massive attack, nick drake, john martyn, joy division,
the fall, stina nordenstam, pixies, david gray, ben&jason, ooberman, sid
vicious, hefner, damien jurado, my bloody valentine, wedding present, etc
etc etc. oh i cant wait for the ooberman album to come out- its gonna be
brill, i know it. and i havta get the new tindersticks one too, cos theyre
ace. umm..what else do u need to know? im not in any way twee, isobel is my
fav name for a girl, i have the memory of a goldfish, i have a serotonin
smile, i like filming things with my video camera, ive seen the blair witch
project, i am a very sleep ee head right now. okay, thankyou for listening.

yes, slightly scared new girl here, feverishly getting involved with everything
to do with Belle and Seb.erm.i am a studenty personage in England who likes,
well, anything remotely agreeable actually.have been reading all night, so my
eyes are hurting, and i really should learn to put a book down..but i won't..i
like lots of things, most too convoluted to go into in these short moments, but
they mostly involve music and recorders , record players and flip flops....oh,
and headscarves...and thats about it really, well for now anyway...

Hello everybody, so happy as i have just handed in an entry for amajor
design award and have a wee pile of new 7"s awaiting a visit to a record
player... Friends, carpet, Avvy tea and biscuits. Anyone know any good
dunking biscuits? as i have been unable to beat the Teddy Bear Biscuit and
just know there must be better..

Steven> did you end up hearing The Gentle Waves album? Interested to know
what you think now..

Heading out tonight to start organising a B & S meet up in melbourne..
Anyone been to one and have something to share? so curious about these meet
ups but as a friend would say "they sound like jolly good fun".

Bye bye..

i'm glad to see more and more people signing up for this list...i think it
will naturally start out a little slow until we get some nice reciprocal
topic where things can get bounced back and forth and all that. does anyone
out there have any news of any tours or what not? i really hoped that b and
s would play cmj in new york this year, but i guess not. the more i listen
to tigermilk the more i am being reeled in by it...especially "we rule the
school" what an amazing song..well they are all great..i have to admit my
first one or two listens i thought it was good, but that it didn't compare
to if you're feeling sinister...but now i'm not so sure. also...the girl
who is on the inside sleeve of the boy with the arab strap..is that isobel?
because i have a big crush. anywho...talk to me. tell me the heart of a

i totally agree with you. somehow i wish isobel developed her melodies
further. still, it's a fabulous "autumny" record. goes beautifully with avvy
tea and lemon-centred biscuits too... :)

that came across sounding incredibly twee, didn't it? then again, i was an

Oh, I forgot to include Beulah on my list of E6 bands
I've seen play. They were good too.

I just got one of the Lucksmiths albums, but haven't
given it a good listen yet. One of my favorite
Australian bands (though they broke up years ago) is
the Go-Betweens. I did see Grant McLennan and Robert
Forrester put on a great show a few months ago.
They're supposed to release new material soon.

On the topic of favorite B&S songs, here are my top 5
in order:

1. The State I Am In
2. Judy and the Dream of Horses
3. Fox in the Snow
4. If You're Feeling Sinister
5. We Rule the School

Cheers,
Allen

i was kind of disappointed to hear that one of you said the gentle waves
weren't all that great...i have been waiting to hear them...i actually
bought the cd (which is near sacrelige, vinyl is the way), but it got stuck
in my friends car cd player before it even played. so i'm still waiting on
it...i did think that the lyrics were kind of ummmm...simple, i guess
lacking the charm of the b&s lyrics, and also kind of rhymey in a forced
way..i dunno. still anxious to hear it. i agree with the earlier sentiment
that tigermilk is amazing, but i wouldn't go so far to say it's the best.
anyway...favorite songs? i'd like to know what song is the favorite of
all...i know, we all love them all...but which one is it that holds a little
more meaning or got you into the band. just curious if yours are the same as
mine. i think boy done wrong again is one for me...but simplethings is up
there too, hence the name. anyway...i'll stop rambling on now. anyone else
dying for the new red house painters full length, old ramon?

Hello,

I'm new to this list, not sure how many others are on here or much else, but
I'll try and find some time to catch up...As far as a brief intro goes- I'm
in my late 20s and live in the States- close to San Francisco, California. I
am incredibly fond of B&S and have been lucky enough to see them play
several times- they're wonderful...

Other musical interests include: Marc Almond, Beautiful South, Divine
Comedy, Gainsbourg, Momus, Scott Walker...mainly british and french music as
far as pop-type music is concerned.

Re: the Lucksmiths- I actually happened to see them play twice. They played
w/the Shoestrings in Detroit- and they put on a great show. I also saw them
play in Fribourg, Switzerland- they were opening for Belle & Sebastian
there. I have two of their CDs and they're both very good- they're really
good fellows as well.

Enough of my rambling-

I just heard the Neutral Milk Hotel Album and Tone Soul Evolution this past
weekend on a gorgeous little winter jaunt to the beach, I had heard bits and
pieces on the radio but not the albums. We are very lucky in melbourne to
have two very fine independent radio stations that allow dj's to play
whatever they want, its wonderful as you never hear this stuff on any other
station.
Neutral Milk Hotel would have to be one of my favourites in the E6 stable,
can't get over Holland1945, but then i'm still dizzy from The Gerbils
'Sunshine Soul'.Theres a rumour thet Beulah are coming all the way down to
Australia next year but you can't get your hopes up about that sort of
thing. Everybody always sais they're coming down here but never turn up.
Still awaiting Sloan after a year and a half!!!

Enough on E6 from me then.

Always curious to hear if the rest of the world have heard of Australian
bands. In particular The Lucksmiths...

I've seen only two of the E6 bands -- Apples In Stereo
and the Minders. Both were ok, though I prefer
hearing Apples In Stereo's albums over hearing them
live. On "Tone Soul Revolution", their strength is
their sweet, Beatles-like pop songs, but live, they
tend to like to rock out with the guitars turned up.
The E6 band I'd love to see live is Neutral Milk
Hotel, who's supposed to put on quite a show.

Cheers,

hello all,

Talking of the Belle and Sebastian side projects...I was given a copy of the
gentle waves album and although i didn't think it was anything
spectacularily mind blowing, it is rather an enjoyable listen. I was just
given as a sweet prezzie the weathershow 7" but like molly i can't listen to
it, not until my record player gets out of hospital. There is a looper song
about letters and meeting a girl, think it is called 'impossible things',
that is the most gorgeous song... haven't heard much else of theirs though.

Have any of you American people seen any of the Elephant Six bands play? One
of my dreams is to see The Olivia Tremor Control play live as I read they
put on quite a show. Cought part of their set for the Merge concert on the
internet but really couldn't hear it properly :(

Toodle ooo,

Kate

Hi, I'm Allen from San Francisco, California. Being
28, I'm probably the senior person on this list so
far. I've been listening to B&S since Sinister came
out and have been collecting their music eversince.
In April, I was fortunate enought to see them perform
at the Bowlie Festival in England. I don't think that
I've ever seen a more talented band than B&S.

Other music that I like include The Magnetic Fields,
Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliott Smith, Quasi, Red House
Painters, Bedhead, Yo La Tengo, Mojave 3, His Name Is
Alive, Hefner, Camera Obscura, Luna, Sleater-Kinney,
Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Liz Phair, the Jam, the
Smiths, etc.

Cheers,

Yay!
i was just out walking with my sister, i got paid
today and was in the mood to spend a little bit of
money, so we browsed through some record stores...
i didn't have much luck in the first one, but in the
second one (that has the b & s vinyl that i mentioned)
i was looking at the vinyl again, trying to decide
between "lazy painter jane" and "this is just a modern
rock song" and then i found Looper! it was put with
belle & sebastian and not on its own - which normally
would have annoyed me - but i was glad for it today
'cause i probably would have never thought to go
looking for it.
so that's the one i got - looper - up a tree.
too bad i won't be able to listen to it for about a
month - i don't have a record player right now :o(

yeah, you'll find that i ramble a lot...

~love & kisses~

* i also got some Madigan - check it out (also Bonfire
Madigan)

heya, my name's melissa, and i'm going to be 23 before all the millennium
paar-taays drive me completely potty. in a month's time, i'll be back in
europe -- in paris, to be exact, to do my phd in film studies -- but right
now, i'm stuck in singapore, which isn't the most exciting place...and
there's a dearth of decent record stores here: that, in itself, is enough
reason for me to miss good old Blighty tremendously (right down to the smog
and english rain). anyway...every single belle & sebastian song is the bee's
knees to me, but if i had to pick a favourite album, it'll have to be
_tigermilk_...which just got re-released, and anyone who hasn't heard it
really ought to pick this up. does b&s have a following in the US? maybe
we're luckier in the UK, but it could well be due to the c86/anorak-pop
culture of the past (still alive and kicking too!) does anyone else like the
solo projects of b&s' stuart (david) and isobel...called looper and the
gentle waves respectively? erhm...as for the other schtuff that i listen
to...off the top of my head: red house painters, low, idaho, lambchop, my
bloody valentine, east river pipe, bowery electric, labradford, godspeed you
black emperor, blur, mogwai, the magnetic fields, steve reich, françoise
hardy, the kinks, kronos quartet, mazzy star, etc. etc. etc. this could go
on forever. i guess i've yammered on for quite a bit, so c'est tout for now,
and toodles to all.

cheers,
-mel-

Umsy um...

Hello to you all. I'm Kate from Melbourne, Australia. I'm 20, studying
Design and love surrounding myself with gorgeous music. I heard of Belle and
Sebastian 2 years ago but it wasn't until last July that I heard all of 'If
you're Felling Sinister' and fell under their spell. Now they are on high
rotation in the Katie D lounge room disco along with anything from; wilco,
guided by voices, mogwai to pulp, the lucksmiths and the Tijuana brass. I
don't own a lot of records but i have fabulously sweet friends who lend me
all sorts of wonderful things from obscure bedroom pop to electronic beats
and beyond. No boundaries, if it's good it's good. I love dancing in my
lounge room, wearing cosey clothes and indulging my wandering habits
(particularily when there is laneways, record stores or a warm hand to hold
involved).

Cheerio then,

Kateee :)

brilliant idea!

hi! i'm molly... i live in Eugene, Oregon - originally
from the new england area... i'm 18 years old...
as of next month i'll be a college student - graphic
design at a community college (hopefully Boston next
year).
i've only been listening to belle & sebastian for
about a month, i only own 'boy with the arab
strap'...that'll change soon though... i just found
whole bunch of b & s vinyl at a local record store.
My favorite singer/musician is Rufus Wainwright (who
i'll be seeing in September in Santa Fe), and right
now i'm also COMPLETELY obsessed with Alan Wiley,
Davíd Garza, Ben Lee, Imperial Teen, Bjork, Bonfire
Madigan, any operas written by Verdi, ummm, oh, and
Elliott Smith - but i don't have any CDs yet.

and well, yeah, that's me...

~love & kisses~
Molly

well. there are six of us who are signed up for this list now. i hope it
grows and you can all think of yourselves as the groundwork of the list.
anyway...i am quite curious about each of you and your stories. so i thought
a few introductions were in order. my name is steven. i started this list
because i have really been getting into belle and sebastian as of late and i
wanted to talk to some other people who felt the same way i did. i guess i
could share some personal information. i am 26. right now i am living in a
hotel room in dallas texas. i just got a job as a pilot with american
airlines and i am here for training for about another month. after i am done
here i am going to live in nyc, which i am looking forward to. i also enjoy
the music of the red house painters, idaho, built to spill, elliot smith,
modest mouse, smiths/moz and lots more. let's see...i guess that's all i can
think of. so let's get the ball rolling and have anyone who wants to know
who anyone else is tell us your story. steven
