No need for a babysitter, kids under ten get in free. EMTs do as well.
The league has expanded, adding two new home teams which will face off
for the first time this Saturday night. They're keeping the team names
quiet until the bout, but let's just say they're kind of "old Vegas"
vs "new Vegas." I suspect I'd know which team you'd be rooting for.
New skaters include Kelvikta the Blade from the Swing Shift Side Show
(she swallows swords AND was a speed skater!), Maybelline from the
Denver Roller Dolls, HeatherFace from the Mid-Iowa Rollers and Lali
Pop from the Bay City Bombers and San Diego Firebirds. Aside from them
and our vets, keep an eye out for Black Belt Betty. I have never seen
someone learn to skate derby that well so quickly.
6:30 Tailgate party and car show, hosted by the Knuckledraggers. I've
seen it also posted a time or two as 6:00 PM.
7:00 Doors open, get there early, get some good seats. If you sit up
front, you could wind up with a rollergirl in your lap. Unlike a
baseball game, you'll have to give her back.
8:00 Bout begins
Roller derby legend (and Vegas local) Frankie Macedo (L.A. T-Birds,
Team Canada and many other teams from the late 50s to the mid-80s)
will be singing a bit of Sinatra to warm up the crowd. Frankie's a
hella nice guy, and I have read he was one of the scoringest jammers
out there.
Babes in Sin will be performing some clothed-enough-for-kids-to-attend
burlesque at halftime.
As the grand finale, we'll have the Klash of the Kings. I kid you not,
some Elvis vs. Elvis action.
