Find a jam anywhere in the country: http://www.folkjam.org/
This site is amazing for those of us for whom music is our main social
activity.
It is new, and was developed in Kansas City by some great guys that
I've met at jams, so there's a lot of data around the 64111 zip code,
so try there if you don't find anything in your locality and you want
to see what the site does.
I've kept a copy of a Sing Out! article called "Social Music" from
2002 I think. I agree about how fabulous it is to make music rather
than consume music. The article goes on to bemoan how few people have
a chance to make music with others but as you can see, in my area
there are many opportunities. Have times changed, or am I really
lucky to live where I do?
Maybe Sing Out! could do an article on the phenomenon.
My friends who moved to Phoenix found, if anything, more social music
happening there. I can't wait till people start filling in the jams
in their areas.
