. . . who's going and where is everyone staying at? I'll be at the Embassy

Ticketbastard but no dice.

I just saw New Monsoon a couple weeks ago at a festival in Florida. I'm
kicking myself for taking so long to finally appreciate their music. They
are doing a show 12/16 at the Fais Do Do with Underground Orchestra and
Moonshine Still. Hope to see some of you freaks there!
Peace and Panic,

Missed you Matt, Ryan and the rest of the SD crew. But, I had a blast in
Vegas no doubt! From the second Jimmy stepped on to stage in New York, I
knew this was a good match. Jimmy is on fire and this fall tour brought us
so many treats. I can't wait for NYE and then Langerado (will have to make
the Spring Break trip over to the right coast for that line up). Anyone else
making it out to Hotlanta?

Subject: [SoCalPanic] Whats up my panic freaks?
Hey Everyone! Its been way too quiet on this list lately and now that Panic
is back with a VENGEANCE its high time we get some more action on this list.
Personally, I thought Vegas were my two favorite panic shows since Mikey
passed (with Missoula last summer a close third) and I am so damn excited to
have Jimmy Herring on board. Yes he noodles a bit, but Ill be damned if he
hasnt learned the entire Panic catalogue in just one short tour and the boys
are sounding better than they have in a LOOOONG time. Loved hearing Airplane
come back and Morning Dew was just heavenly.
It was great getting to hang out with Mr. Boyle as well! We all need to make
an effort to get together more than once or twice a year.
Anyone make it to Austin? 11/4 is a pretty smokin show...would loved to have
been there.
Enough WOB for now, but I'm going to leave you with this, very, very funny
post that was on the panicfreaks board today...its a couple years old but I
think you all will appreciate it.
how to be a true panic fan...
________________________________________
While it is true anyone can be a fan of widespread panic, only the truly
unoriginal and most sheep-like of men and women can elevate themselves to
the status of super fan or true fan, as it will be referred to through the
rest of this little diatribe. There are a number of things that make one a
true fan of wsp, none is more important than the rest, the true fan learns
to balance all attributes, and exhibit each and everyone when they enter
into a discussion about or relating to wsp. The following is a detailed list
of things to remember when talking about wsp, if you manage to follow this
list then you will surely be considered by all you meet to be a true wsp
fan.
1. The terminology:
*acceptable terms for widespread panic: these of course vary by region and
time, but any of these is acceptable, The spread, Panic, or the boys .
Unacceptable terms: Spread , The panic , WP or WSP the use of letters is
restricted solely to writing, writing wsp is okay but saying it is a dead
give away that you are either a newbie or a tool
*acceptable terms for wsp concerts, here there is only one option, concerts
are shows, any other word is not cool
*band members names: john bell= jb
dave schools = schools
Todd nance = todd
Domingo Ortiz = sunny
John Herman = jojo
George McConnell= Gmac
Michael Houser= Mikey
2. The scene: While panic attracts a hippy scene as a true panic fan it is
your duty to hate hippies, try coming up with demeaning terms for them like
Wookie, but never take credit for inventing them, because if the term sucks
hell you didn't make it up. Also speak derogatorily of the scene at any and
all opportunities, because you aren't there for the scene, which by the way
is getting worse every tour because of all the lot/tour rats and wookies.
3. Drugs: true panic fans do drugs but don't buy drugs in the lot, because
drugs in the lot are bad, you have your own dealer, and you bring your own
drugs to the lot, it is important to remember that true fans do drugs, but
not so many that they start acting like a hippy and most importantly they
don't do so many drugs that they cant remember what sucked about a show.
4. Beer: it has to be expensive and micro brewed if possible, when talking
to other true panic fans remember your favorite beer is fat tire, this is
the only great beer out there, it is okay on occasion to say Siera Nevada or
sweetwater are your favorites, but if someone else mentions fat tire always
nod in agreement that fat tire is in fact superior.
5. Hating Other bands: True panic fans only like panic, but they have to be
well versed in other bands so as not to see uninformed, so here is list of
bands that suck, and more importantly why they suck, simply use this chart
when talking about other bands and people will think wow this guy is pretty
smart and definitely a true panic fan
*String Cheese Incident- they are gay, noodle around, and are soft
*Dave Matthews Band- used to be cool, but have since sold out and are now
horrible musicians
*moe.- these guys had potential, back when they were on further, now all
they do is noodle, always mention that they play a mere 6 songs a set
*Phish- first and foremost mock their lyrics, but then mock ther fans, too
many wookies.
6. Liking Other bands; as a true panic fan you must admit to likeing other
bands, but only certain bands and they most either be closely related to
panic or the dead, or a new band that no one but you has heard of
*Government Mule: schools plays with them
*Phil and Friends- warren plays with them who is in govt mule whom schools
plays with, also lesh was in the dead, this makes phil and friends a solid
choice for a second favorite band, but if you claim to have second favorite
band make sure to clarify that they are no where near as cool as panic
*Grateful Dead- this is an easy one because everyone who likes panic and
wants to be a true fan HAS to like the dead
Karl Denson/Dirty Dozen Brass Band/Robert Randolph/Blodkin/Vic
Chesnutt/Jerry Joseph- these bands play with panic a lot so you should like
them, you must like the first three, and the last to it is okay to dislike,
but the dislike cant be as adiment as your dislike for the bands true panic
fans hate
7.Gmac- true panic fans can either hate or love Gmac, but they cant be
apathetic on this issue, if you hate gmac you have to constantly say that
gmac is a b rate player and it should have been Jimmy Hearing or Sam Holt,
gmac lovers have to talk about how gmac fits in with the band, and needs
time, in either situation you have to honestly believe your opinion towards
the band actually matters.
8. Randall Bramblet- true fans are glad he is no longer playing with the
band, but always take the time to say how cool it was of him to step up and
help the boys out
9. Sources - true fans always have a source close to the band so that they
can be the first to start a rumor, even if you don't have a source pretend
like you do and just confirm the rumors other people have said their source
told them. Not having a source is as uncool as liking the string cheese
incident.
10. What Sucked about a show - this is a tricky topic not to be ventured
into by the new true fan, saying a song sucked or a show sucked before
anyone else is dangerous, because other true panic fans may disagree, and a
show only sucks when a lot of true fans say it does. Saying certain songs
sucked is a much easier route, to determine if a song sucks use this simple
formula, the first 3 times a song is played it can't suck because seeing a
song played for the first, second, or third time is cool, after that the
song sucks until it has been in the rotation for at least 2 years, only
exception to this rule is cover songs, that is unless the cover song is on
the most recent album. An example 'Sometimes', this song sucks, even though
it is a cover it sucks because it hasn't been in the rotation long enough
and most importantly it was on the new album. This brings us to the second
rule, songs on the newest album suck, and will continue to suck until the
next album is put out at
which point those songs suck, occasionally a song on the new album wont
suck, but it is okay to say it does, such as Big Woolly Mammoth. Third, some
songs will always suck due to overplay, such as All Time Low, and One Arm
Steve. Songs that were played before 1996 can not suck, because they are old
school. If a show contains many songs that suck you may consider the show to
suck, but be careful because even one rare original or cover can make a show
a classic, also consider the venue, shows at traditional panic venues like
oak mountain or UNO Lakefront Arena can not suck.
11. Shows that are Incredible. Saying any show was incredible is also
dangerous because it may appear as though you are neither discerning nor
cynical . That show was the greatest show I have ever seen should never
under any circumstances be said, because great shows are determined by the
masses, not by individuals. Again it is safer to stick with songs, so here
are some basic rules, all covers are good, Steve Winwood and Warren Zevin
covers are AWESOME, and the rarer the cover the better, here it is important
to remember that true fans memorize every stat on the everyday companion,
and if you don't know what that is you will never be a true fan, any cover
in medium to heavy rotation is good but never great, example ride me high.
Original songs can rarely be great unless they have been played over 500
times, example: space wrangler. Overall the true panic knows that only one
or two songs per show can be great, so don't say that more than 2 songs were
great.
12. Number of Shows you have seen; Never reveal how many shows you have
actually seen unless it is over 100, and if forced to always frame you
number in a small time period, for instance, "I have caught 29 panic shows
in the last 9 months" while you have only seen 29 shows you saw them in a
small window and the person you are talking to may be lead to believe you
have seen more than 29 shows.
13. Why you go to shows; for the music, no other reason, if you are there
for any other reason you may come off as less than a true fan
14. Show trading/show collection; in order to be a true fan you must posses
a huge collection of panic shows, and you must listen to nothing but panic
shows, then when talking about panic try to reference as many shows you have
on disc as humanly possible
15. Talking to other fans; always assume your panic shlong is bigger until
the other person/people prove to you they are also true panic fans, and know
that while there can be smaller panic fans than you there can be no bigger
fans, just equals because you reside at the top of the plateau of panic fans
as a true fans
Follow these steps and you will soon be the envy of every panic fan you
know.

talk about how gmac fits in with the band, and needs time, in either situation
you have to honestly believe your opinion towards the band actually matters.
8. Randall Bramblet- true fans are glad he is no longer playing with the band,
but always take the time to say how cool it was of him to step up and help the
boys out
9. Sources - true fans always have a source close to the band so that they can
be the first to start a rumor, even if you don’t have a source pretend like you
do and just confirm the rumors other people have said their source told them.
Not having a source is as uncool as liking the string cheese incident.
10. What Sucked about a show - this is a tricky topic not to be ventured into by
the new true fan, saying a song sucked or a show sucked before anyone else is
dangerous, because other true panic fans may disagree, and a show only sucks
when a lot of true fans say it does. Saying certain songs sucked is a much
easier route, to determine if a song sucks use this simple formula, the first 3
times a song is played it can’t suck because seeing a song played for the first,
second, or third time is cool, after that the song sucks until it has been in
the rotation for at least 2 years, only exception to this rule is cover songs,
that is unless the cover song is on the most recent album. An example
‘Sometimes’, this song sucks, even though it is a cover it sucks because it
hasn’t been in the rotation long enough and most importantly it was on the new
album. This brings us to the second rule, songs on the newest album suck, and
will continue to suck until the next album is put out at
which point those songs suck, occasionally a song on the new album wont suck,
but it is okay to say it does, such as Big Woolly Mammoth. Third, some songs
will always suck due to overplay, such as All Time Low, and One Arm Steve. Songs
that were played before 1996 can not suck, because they are old school. If a
show contains many songs that suck you may consider the show to suck, but be
careful because even one rare original or cover can make a show a classic, also
consider the venue, shows at traditional panic venues like oak mountain or UNO
Lakefront Arena can not suck.
11. Shows that are Incredible. Saying any show was incredible is also dangerous
because it may appear as though you are neither discerning nor cynical . That
show was the greatest show I have ever seen should never under any circumstances
be said, because great shows are determined by the masses, not by individuals.
Again it is safer to stick with songs, so here are some basic rules, all covers
are good, Steve Winwood and Warren Zevin covers are AWESOME, and the rarer the
cover the better, here it is important to remember that true fans memorize every
stat on the everyday companion, and if you don’t know what that is you will
never be a true fan, any cover in medium to heavy rotation is good but never
great, example ride me high. Original songs can rarely be great unless they have
been played over 500 times, example: space wrangler. Overall the true panic
knows that only one or two songs per show can be great, so don’t say that more
than 2 songs were great.
12. Number of Shows you have seen; Never reveal how many shows you have actually
seen unless it is over 100, and if forced to always frame you number in a small
time period, for instance, “I have caught 29 panic shows in the last 9 months”
while you have only seen 29 shows you saw them in a small window and the person
you are talking to may be lead to believe you have seen more than 29 shows.
13. Why you go to shows; for the music, no other reason, if you are there for
any other reason you may come off as less than a true fan
14. Show trading/show collection; in order to be a true fan you must posses a
huge collection of panic shows, and you must listen to nothing but panic shows,
then when talking about panic try to reference as many shows you have on disc as
humanly possible
15. Talking to other fans; always assume your panic shlong is bigger until the
other person/people prove to you they are also true panic fans, and know that
while there can be smaller panic fans than you there can be no bigger fans, just
equals because you reside at the top of the plateau of panic fans as a true fans
Follow these steps and you will soon be the envy of every panic fan you know.

how to be a true panic fan...
________________________________________
While it is true anyone can be a fan of widespread panic, only the truly
unoriginal and most sheep-like of men and women can elevate themselves to the
status of super fan or true fan, as it will be referred to through the rest of
this little diatribe. There are a number of things that make one a true fan of
wsp, none is more important than the rest, the true fan learns to balance all
attributes, and exhibit each and everyone when they enter into a discussion
about or relating to wsp. The following is a detailed list of things to remember
when talking about wsp, if you manage to follow this list then you will surely
be considered by all you meet to be a true wsp fan.
1. The terminology:
*acceptable terms for widespread panic: these of course vary by region and
time, but any of these is acceptable, The spread, Panic, or the boys .
Unacceptable terms: Spread , The panic , WP or WSP the use of letters is
restricted solely to writing, writing wsp is okay but saying it is a dead give
away that you are either a newbie or a tool
*acceptable terms for wsp concerts, here there is only one option, concerts are
shows, any other word is not cool
*band members names: john bell= jb
dave schools = schools
Todd nance = todd
Domingo Ortiz = sunny
John Herman = jojo
George McConnell= Gmac
Michael Houser= Mikey
2. The scene: While panic attracts a hippy scene as a true panic fan it is your
duty to hate hippies, try coming up with demeaning terms for them like Wookie,
but never take credit for inventing them, because if the term sucks hell you
didn’t make it up. Also speak derogatorily of the scene at any and all
opportunities, because you aren’t there for the scene, which by the way is
getting worse every tour because of all the lot/tour rats and wookies.
3. Drugs: true panic fans do drugs but don’t buy drugs in the lot, because
drugs in the lot are bad, you have your own dealer, and you bring your own drugs
to the lot, it is important to remember that true fans do drugs, but not so many
that they start acting like a hippy and most importantly they don’t do so many
drugs that they cant remember what sucked about a show.
4. Beer: it has to be expensive and micro brewed if possible, when talking to
other true panic fans remember your favorite beer is fat tire, this is the only
great beer out there, it is okay on occasion to say Siera Nevada or sweetwater
are your favorites, but if someone else mentions fat tire always nod in
agreement that fat tire is in fact superior.
5. Hating Other bands: True panic fans only like panic, but they have to be
well versed in other bands so as not to see uninformed, so here is list of bands
that suck, and more importantly why they suck, simply use this chart when
talking about other bands and people will think wow this guy is pretty smart and
definitely a true panic fan
*String Cheese Incident- they are gay, noodle around, and are soft
*Dave Matthews Band- used to be cool, but have since sold out and are now
horrible musicians
*moe.- these guys had potential, back when they were on further, now all they
do is noodle, always mention that they play a mere 6 songs a set
*Phish- first and foremost mock their lyrics, but then mock ther fans, too many
wookies.
6. Liking Other bands; as a true panic fan you must admit to likeing other
bands, but only certain bands and they most either be closely related to panic
or the dead, or a new band that no one but you has heard of
*Government Mule: schools plays with them
*Phil and Friends- warren plays with them who is in govt mule whom schools
plays with, also lesh was in the dead, this makes phil and friends a solid
choice for a second favorite band, but if you claim to have second favorite band
make sure to clarify that they are no where near as cool as panic
*Grateful Dead- this is an easy one because everyone who likes panic and wants
to be a true fan HAS to like the dead
Karl Denson/Dirty Dozen Brass Band/Robert Randolph/Blodkin/Vic Chesnutt/Jerry
Joseph- these bands play with panic a lot so you should like them, you must like
the first three, and the last to it is okay to dislike, but the dislike cant be
as adiment as your dislike for the bands true panic fans hate
7.Gmac- true panic fans can either hate or love Gmac, but they cant be
apathetic on this issue, if you hate gmac you have to constantly say that gmac
is a b rate player and it should have been Jimmy Hearing or Sam Holt, gmac
lovers have to talk about how gmac fits in with the band, and needs time, in
either situation you have to honestly believe your opinion towards the band

Aside from the mention that Jimmy Herring is the man
and I am amzaed at how well he is fitting...there is
not much panic content. More of a shameless plug for a
My Morning Jacket listening party in SD.
Unless, anyone will by at the Cinci>Columbus shows, in
which case, drop a email off-line.
I will be having a listening party for My Morning
Jacket's new Double Live album, Okonokos. It is Oct
27th, from 7-9 at 710 Beach Club (formally Blind
Melons). A little happy hour to start the weekend
before everyone heads to Vegas and beyond!
It was supposed to be a pre-release party, but
scheduling will not allow it.
I will have stickers to give away, as well as some
live shows I have.
There will be no cover for this.
Come on down and enjoy the fun!

This past weekend at Radio City Music Hall was absolutely amazing. Many knew
Jimmy Herring would be good but who knew he would be that good?! My QUICK
review . . .
My highlights from the weekend include. . . .
Rebirtha, Arleen (hot, hot, hot) and Chest Fever (!!!!) and the You Got
Yours (my first!)second set opener from the first night. . . . .
Am I allowed to say the WHOLE Friday night show just floored me, I found
myself fanning my face after the massive Fishwater, jumping up and down when
Col. Bruce came out - loving every second of Time is Free, hugging my
friends for ALG, TPOT & Jack are two of my favorites, JB rapping it up
during Diner and, of course, getting down to closer Love Tractor. . . .
On Saturday . . .Walkin' was appropriate for the amount we did in NYC, love
my Ribs & Whiskey, can deny SBDB, absolutely loved the
Greta>Driving>Drums>Guilded Splinters>Driving Song (there were so many
people up on drums - I think Sonny went backstage to take a break! :-)), the
encore was very nice (I used to be a bigger fan of None of Us Are Free but
this song has started to wear on me).
Jimmy looked so statuesque on stage, playing so effortlessly, the way the
light lit up his white hair and skin he looked like some type of angel or
saint. JB give him a real nice introduction on Saturday night. I don't
recall exactly what was said but it was a "welcome" and everyone went wild
for JH. I cannot wait for my next shows - Vegoose, Baby, Vegoose!
1st night was foreplay
2nd night was "the" night, left you screaming for more
3rd night just left you feeling SATISFIED!
P.S. Where was my Busted Big?
Peace and Panic,
Carrie

the Wonder Theatre of the World when it opened on October 26, 1921.
The Chicago Theatre was the first large, lavish movie palace in
America and was the prototype for all others. This beautiful movie palace was
constructed for $4 million by theatre owners Barney and Abe Balaban and Sam and
Morris Katz and designed by Cornelius and George Rapp. It was the flagship of
the Balaban and Katz theatre chain.
Built in French Baroque style, The Chicago Theatre houses 3600 seats, and is
seven stories high, more than one half of a city block wide, and nearly as
long...

WOW. everything here got an A to A++ in my book... this show knocked my
socks off...
the Jams, the dualing guitars, the energy..... all of the above was a huge
burst of color... Second SET,First SET - to start off.... we all
were JAMMIN!! after the mellow fri show, this was just what the physician
ordered.... MMMMMM..
highlights were the Sleeping man-Dirty..., the time zones. funk to the max..
Trouble was beautiful........... maggot brain into floozy was a great way to
end it... lots of power... it kept getting dirtier....
SECOND ..MACHINE>BARSTOOLS OPENER....(are you kidding me??) I had never seen
this before... we were in store for a heater!! (though, the sound didnt come
on until Barstools ..so it was quite a stange sensation... kind of like bottling

rev it up for the finale- [interesting to see another sox color for the first
time....I had only in the past seen the Red color and even though Chi-town beat
the Tigers, the crowd didnt seem too into the game... it was a weird vibe there,
but Im glad to have experienced the 'new' Comiskey Park. Pretty Cool.]

we knew we were in trouble at the first notes of Pusherman. (Thank you
Curtis). --because we had gotten Trouble the night before, we also knew we were
in good shape...--
Schools was on fire the whole night..... starting the shag fest early in
Hatfield.... ... just like old times....they were all hot tonight..... Sam and
John filled in everything you had been longing to hear.. the JB Rap...calling
for Hatfiield's Momma.to bring us cold beer too... Jojo makes me dance
again...... Todd and Sonny... solid as a Rock...
Transitions were perfect. bringing you up, then letting you rest your bones a
bit, then kicking your face in, then doing it all over again....
Panic always knows when to throw a song in for reflection, when to break up
the Boogy madness of the Dirty South.
perfect example being This part of town into One Kind Favor..... then ending
the first set with From the Cradle... (my favoritest New Song.... especially
with Sam....) and then the first of the aqua songs... From New Orleans...
..whew! what a first set.....
Second set killed us right from the catalyst... they all had on their speed
shoes... (I mean, Come ON...Goodpeople, Driving Song > Disco > Don't Be Denied >
Surprise Valley > Jam > Driving Song > Impossible > Drums > Arleen > Papa's Home
> Space Wrangler, Tennessee Before Daylight > Chilly Water )
what are they trying to say here....?
<We are the good people your friends told you all about........One touch of
nature digs your whole world again>
Craziest Driving Sandwich ever......and THEN Impossibe through Wrangler was just
rediculous....... Tennessee Before Daylight to honor Samwich's gusto.......(so
Polite, boys.....) and then to cool ya'all down, the latter of the H2O songs...
Of Course Chilly...... (sorry bout all that water taper folk......)
Then, an 'End of the Show' into 'Last Dance'... (oh, yeah right.. woke up on
a Monday Morning...... of course...) fitting.
MAN, these guys are good... most were silent on the way out until we hit the
main lobby, from where the cheering seemed like it never ceased. the energy
level was crazy. we just got spanked, and damn it was satisfying.... quite
possibly the BEST setlist I have ever seen.... it was incredible.......
With these shows, I got reminded of what we have been missing. Widespread
Panic as a band, In my Opinion, has been chugging along these past few years,
trying to find themselves among themselves, and not really getting there....The
Essence was still alive, but it was being performed in a different way with
G-Mac. George is a fantastic guitar player in his own right, and thank goodness
he stepped up to help us through, but he just didnt have the touch that the
Panic needs.
on a side note, Im not too happy either of how the severing of the ties went
down, but sometimes, it happens, and you have to make the best of a negative
situation. The ending of this book with Sam and John as co-contributers was
something of an impromptu effort that just clicked like it should. It was in
essence, Awesome. Good Luck George, wherever you may land. Thank YOU.
...And now we are faced with the Jimmy Herring Era. <JHE> welcome to the
third skin. Welcome to another learning curve. Yes, we will be embarking on
another (semi) diffucult time, per say... but I feel that the learning curve
depends on the musician. Though Jimmy has never defined himself as the LEAD in
a band, lucking in the semi-shadows more as a support system, he has a keen
understanding of how to use space, which George did not. He knows when to hold
back, and knows when to accent those playing around him, and he knows when to
accent HIMSELF....much like Mikey did..... Mikey could play the background and
play the foreground at the same moment. He knew when to accent the Pocket, and
knew when to accent the Solo. His style of Layering Space and Sound and Volume
is what we have been missing for a few months.
So.... I am excited to see where this chapter leads. I am excited to have
Widespread Panic to look foreward to again.
in Conclusion, though Michael Houser's loss brought on very, very few
positives, one of them is that (besides the fact that it weeded out alot of the
wooks and folks who were in it more for the party than the essence of Music )
his loss helped each musician step up to the plate to fill the void Houser Left.
They are so on top of their game right now, it makes me shiver. Bring on the
Fall..
may you live long and lucky.
(and may we get a night-train sandwich in this mug??)
Mad LOVE,
Regards-and-peace

...I too was at the M.S.G. shows in 03'Jimmy, and I
think you should give a good listen to both nights in
their entirety and hear how George was a lot more good
than bad overall-Not to mention he was still "brand

George's work on "Night of Joy" w/D.D.B.B where he
nails "Use me up","Bust it big","Rebirtha"...and a

damn curs-ed selective memory!!!

One more piece of advice to Jimmy. If the Dirty Dozen are onstage next you, and
the boys are ripping thru "Guilded" or "Superstition" and the Dozen are priming
their horns, ready to blow it big, do not, and I repeat DO NOT STEP IN FRONT OF
THEM AND TAKE A BIG "ROCKSTAR" GUITAR SOLO! To those who were at Halloween in
Madison Sq. garden a few years back you know what i'm referencing. Thanks for
the hard work george, but move over and let Jimmy take over! cheers. huzie

I agree....and I echo you Bruce,
the falling of George is both bittersweet, as well as a relief. I applaud
George's nature for stepping up to the plate, and helping the boys through a
time when no one else would.
however, it was not the lifeblood that once was, and that cannot be debated.
nuff said.
I am F-in excited to see where this leads!!!!!!!!! Bring on the
Herring!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, in essence it is. This will provide fodder for
all the WSP experts to debate for days and days. I

tickets to shows and buy cds and dvds like I have been
doing all along. Hope to see y'all in the fall-
