NEWS ITEM # 2:

KULAK’S WOODSHED HEARING ZONING HEARING IS JUNE 9 AT 4:30 PM
.
Paul Kulak, impresario of the unique, nonprofit, ever-popular, and still
embattled acoustic music venue, says, "That’s where I have to go before
the City of LA. The hearing is in Van Nuys. The use / parking variance
permit the Woodshed was granted by the City of LA Zoning Administration
in March has been appealed by my neighbor. This hearing is open to the
public and I need all the support I can get. The room has a capacity for
150 people. The more people who turn out to support us the better our
chances of being able to keep the Woodshed open."
.
Here are the details:
Thursday June 9th at:
Marvin Braude Building
First Floor conference room
6262 Van Nuys Blvd.
Van Nuys (right next to the courthouse)
.
Paul continues, "The next door neighbor who is trying to get the Woodshed
closed down is going to be there with as many people from the community
that he can get to testify against us after misleading them and the City
of LA with very damaging false information. He is accusing the Woodshed
of being a danger for the neighborhood and is requesting we be closed
down immediately. Some of the things he is saying is that the Woodshed
has caused him to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars of income because
of ‘excessive Woodshed noise’ and that we are causing terrible parking
problems for residents and businesses near the Woodshed, and that we are
drinking beer and throwing the bottles outside their property, urinating
on their buildings, vandalizing property and on and on, and on."
.
Patrons of Kulak’s Woodshed are often subjected to that same neighbor’s
industrial-strength stereo, blasting through the Woodshed’s wall. While
he always cites "excessive noise" from the gentle stains of guitars,
fiddles, mandolins and the Woodshed’s own borrowed piano, he frequently
counter-programs the live shows with recorded heavy metal, acid rock,
rap, or whatever he can find that will penetrate the wall. It’s not much
different than a cat moaning outside your window, yet he’s the one
claiming the Woodshed’s "noise level" prevents him from working.
.
The "parking issue" is another skillful manipulation of the system to
create an issue where none should legitimately exist. The other
businesses in the neighborhood are closed two hours before Kulak’s
Woodshed opens for evening performances.
.
The trademark five-camera live webcast of every show at the Woodshed
continues, after briefly being discontinued when the bill went unpaid.
.
The whole thing has brought the Woodshed to the brink, and performances
there are now limited to Friday and Saturday nights, with a Sunday
evening workshop and the famous open mic on Mondays. Fewer nights means
less revenue, from patrons and webcast viewers alike.
.
Clearly, it’s been a war of attrition. So far, Kulak’s loyal troops have
hung on, recruiting more as the struggle continues. Paul Kulak closes his
latest plea for attendance at this city hearing, "I'm depending on your
continued support to help me win this thing and keep the Woodshed open. I
hope to see you there."

.
Often compared to John Denver and Jim Croce, Talbot's been described in
regional media as 'Tahoe's Jimmy Buffett' due to the festive feel of his
songs and shows. He's also been voted *Lake Tahoe Best Local Musician*
for two consecutive years in a row by area entertainment weekly Lake
Tahoe Action.

Talbot has opened for The Beach Boys, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and for
Harry Chapin's daughter Jen Chapin. He's had national airplay on Radio
Disney, The All Star Radio Network, Sirius, and XM Satellite Radio. Last

Next weekend, his song, 'OH MY!' will debut nationally on the Dr. Demento

.
A fine weekly series that provides a good midweek evening out. Featured
artists this week:
.
Amy Kuney, singer/songwriter/recording artist, is a 19 year-old
Wunderkind with a depth of experience well beyond her tender years. It’s
her first time at the MSSS. Born in Tulsa Oklahoma to an American
missionary family, Amy spent the formative years of her adolescence, from
age 13-18, in Honduras, Central America.
.
"Amy’s music," says MSSS Host Garret Swayne, "is informed by the humanity
and inhumanity she encountered in that strife-torn region. With songs
that combine her youthful innocence with a somber maturity some writers
twice her age many never achieve, Amy came to the attention of veteran
producers Peter Barker and Mandi Martin. They signed her to an artist
development deal as well as a publishing deal with Centinela Music."
.
Barker and Martin are currently producing Amy's debut CD, due out this
summer. Her new website is up, but many pages are still under
construction. Nevertheless, it is worth checking out:
http://www.amykuney.com.
.
Alfred Johnson has traveled and played all over the world, including
France, England, Brazil, even as far as New Zealand. That explains much
about the different perspectives that have inspired so many of his
lyrics. In the Southern California roots music community, he's an eminent
and well-loved figure, having played live around LA, particularly in
Venice Beach for more than 20 years.
.
"The bluesy, energetic style he brings to the piano is a wonderful
compliment to his voice. From the New Orleans sound of ‘Pounza Proof,’ to
soft, lyric-driven ballads like ‘Love du Jour,’ to the tongue-in-cheek
‘Due:The W2’ and ‘Love's In The Lead,’ you will find yourself looking at
everyday occurrences in a whole new way," says MSSS host Garret Swayne.
He continues, "Alfred will mesmerize you, yet at the same time move you
to laugh at all the funny little peculiarities of life."
.
As a writer for other artists, Alfred was a collaborator with Grammy
Award-winner Rickie Lee Jones on her platinum-selling debut CD which
spawned the hit "Chuck E's In Love." As a performer, Garret says, "Alfred
is utterly charming. He loves the stage; he loves his audience; and his
greatest wish is to one day finish the CD he is currently working on."
.
Open Mike:
.
The MSSS Open Mike follows the Featured Acts a little after 9:00. See
Garret Swayne to sign-up.
