REVIEW:

BOULDER ACOUSTIC SOCIETY at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, October 21, 2009

- Getting Bolder by the Minute - by Joel Okida

+

The name Boulder Acoustic Society may sound like a monthly gathering of Colorado audio engineers, but, in fact, is the moniker of four lively musicians who come together on stages across the country to entertain many a sell-out audience.

+

Recently, in the intimate confines of Altadena’s Coffee Gallery Backstage, the band presented their multi-faceted music machine for an evening of spirited song and a few stories from the road.

+

With a sharp jab or subtle irony, they can get you grinning broadly to any number of rollicking up tempo numbers and then cut you off at the knees with a lament like accordion/keyboard player, Scott McCormick’s “Take My Hand.” From there, they take that lump out of your throat and boost you up with an inspired gospel hymn.

+

Drummer Scott Aller has the tough task of keeping the beat and adding the varied percussive elements on the vastly different range of tunes that the band generates. Aaron Keim juggles the guitar, uke, lap steel, banjo, alto horn and cornet when not posted behind his upright bass and singing. Few groups can cover as much ground instrumentally and material-wise, but BAS carries their own adventurous Americana songbook and gave energetic readings from that eclectic repertoire.

+

All songs are credited to the band as a whole on their recent recording, “Punchline,” but in concert each member gets a beam of the limelight. A song such as “Frog Pajama Waltz” allows ace fiddler Kailin Yong to show his bowing chops, while adding fire on any number of other tunes.

+

Not many bands can be everything to everybody, but BAS touches upon so many musical areas that if they did a show comprised of early music lullabies, bird calls of the Pacific Northwest, Paganini violin concertos and the Star Spangled Banner on ukulele, you would only be mildly surprised, but not shocked at all by how well they do it.

+

They are now on tour throughout the Southwest with a few shows in the eastern U.S. See them on the road if you’re traveling somewhere along their route. Learn more about this remarkable band at www.boulderacousticsociety.net

+

NEWS QUICKIES:

.

1) BE PART OF PASADENA’S LARGEST FOOD DRIVE this weekend at the “Fork in the Road,” where Pasadena Av divides from St. John and creates a triangle N of Bellfontaine (all just N of California Av, near Huntington Hospital).

+

On Sat & Sun, Nov 21 & 22, you can do a drive-by drop-off of food for Union Station Homeless Services, from 8 am to 4 pm, and “Put the Fork in Hunger,” as the event’s name says.

+

So, why did you read this in the Music Guide? Well, because the “Fork in the Road” – an 18 foot high fork sculpture, was recently dedicated as a guerilla art placement in honor of the 75th birthday of Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane. In addition to being honored with the fork, Bob just received the Folk Alliance FAR West Ambassador Award for all he does to support folk-Americana and acoustic artists. As he is wont to do, Bob is giving back to the community, once more, with Ken Marshall, the fork’s creator. And this time, everyone can help! More info? Call Philip Coombes at 626-644-3227 or email phil@...

.

2) KULAK’S WOODSHED CELEBRATES A DECADE and they launched a new website just in time to celebrate the unique venue’s 10th anniversary. You can find plenty there, at www.kulakswoodshed.com, including these highly relevant quotes: “I tend to harp on the fact that Music was NOT created as a vehicle to use in order to gain access to the Show Biz Aristocracy. Music was here a long time before BUSINESS came along, and it’s a-gonna be here long after it’s gone.” – Paul Kulak. He continues, “We celebrate the ESSENCE of what MUSIC is really all about, and the people who simply gotta do it, just - BECAUSE!!! I’m talkin’ about singer-songwriters and music lovers who wanna be around each other… folks who might strive for success in the music business, but also LOVE THE ART FORM, and appreciate its incredible HISTORY. Who knew it would become the wonderful community it is today? Just an idea that turned out cooler than anyone ever imagined.”

.

.

3) YOUR VOTE selects winners in the 2009 “INDEPENDENT SINGER SONGWRITERS ASSOCIATION (ISSA) SONG CONTEST.” See the list of nominees and hear song samples at http://issa-music.org/song_contest2009_nominees.htm. Winners in this year's contest are determined by online fan vote, which runs Wed, Nov 18 through Tue, Nov 25.

+

Nominees include DALE LaDUKE, a past “Tied to the Tracks” guest whose original song, “The Lone Ranger,” became a “Listener Favorite” on the radio show. That’s the song that’s now vying in the ISSA Folk Category.

+

In the Adult Contemporary Category is a song by SUSAN PICKING, whose music has been heard on “TttT.”

+

You can vote for your favorite nominees at

www.issa-music.org/voter_reg_songcontest.php

+

In parallel, the judging panel will review all nominee submissions to select the winner of the $2,000 grand prize and title of “ISSA Singer-Songwriter of the Year.” Winners from the Fan Vote and the Judging Panel will be announced Mon, Nov 30.

Greetings...surfacing from studio in support of fabulous women in music & Code Pink for Peace...

This Saturday Nov 21, a tremendous lineup of talented women come together in Los Angeles at HOME in Silver Lake, CA ~ honored to have been invited to perform with Matahari Music, thrilled to play the grand piano at HOME, and with all of the enchanting talent on hand plus the fierce & fabulous Tammy Tomahawk as an MC, this night is NOT to be missed...

Absinthe!  Accordions!  Activism!  Art!  American Gothic Extravagance!

I’ll be embracing my inner MUSE & may be attired as a fairy queen “glittering in gold & green” ~ see you there!

P.S. I also a have a brand new song to debut live ~ and it is delicious!  Come have a taste...

XOXO ~ Amy Clarke, MAAT Music, ScorpFaery Productions

P.P.S.  For an instrumental sampling of what I’ve been developing in studio for album ~

~ listen  here:  http://www.amyclarke.com/between111109.mp3

More to come!

“Incarnations of Matahari”
9pm, Saturday November 21st at the 1940’s style bar/restaurant “Home” <http://homesilverlake.com/>
2500 Riverside Dr. Los Angeles, CA 90039 (323)665-0211

A night of extraordinary female performers, carrying the torch of Matahari, artists of mystery, intrigue & passion... Live Music (vocals, piano, accordion, percussion etc.) International Surrealism, French Cabaret, and American Gothic, meet in a celebration of feminine artistic extravagance.

10% of all proceeds from the night’s events will be donated to “Code Pink <http://codepinkalert.org/> ” a women’s anti-war <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-war_movement>  group, with offices worldwide.

“Mata Hari Absinthe <http://absinthematahari.com/> ” debuts at “Home” in its myriad recipes expertly executed by the staff at “Home”.  Cocktail specials featured throughout the night.

The evening begins with a poetic reading on the amazing life story of “Mata Hari” composed and read by acclaimed Latina poetess, “Carmen Vega <http://lapoetacv.com> ” Accompanying her story is enchanting, world-renowned belly dancer, "Jenna <http://www.beyondbellydance.com/about.html> ".

Matahari Music artist, “Juliet Annerino <http://www.julietannerino.com/> ”, performs with musicians who appear on her new record, “Scenes from a Life on Fire”.  Recently returning from her Middle East tour, her nu-jazz/lounge/neo-soul has been heard from Paris to Amsterdam, New York to Cairo.

In keeping with the night’s theme of “Incarnations of Matahari”, two other popular female-fronted musical acts perform. Like a vision from a fairytale, the wistful and thought- provoking “Silver Phial <http://www.myspace.com/silverphial> ” plays “witch music for elves”, casting a 60’s style lounge, acoustic spell.  Soulful award-winning singer-pianist, “Amy Clarke <http://amyclarke.com> ” performs dramatic solo alt-pop & rock music with compelling lyrics of unusual depth, reflecting her classical, electronic & world influences.

Beautifully vibrant, feminine-themed paintings by fine artist Helena Rose <http://helenaroseart.com/>  will also be shown on this special night at “Home <http://www.homesilverlake.com/> ”.

Our MC is Hollywood's own mistress of comedy & improv, the multi-talented, accordion-wielding "Tammy Tomahawk <http://www.facebook.com/tammytomahawk> ".

Tickets for admission to “Incarnations of Matahari” are just $5 for advance purchase on line at MatahariMusic.net <http://incarnationsofmatahari.com/>  or $10 at the door. The first 25 guests to buy tickets will receive a free copy of Juliet Annerino’s new record, “Scenes from a Life on Fire”.

ABOUT THE SONGSALIVE! WORKSHOPS

Songsalive!, the non-profit organization supporting and promoting
songwriters and composers, holds workshops where songwriters gather to share
their songs, gain feedback and develop relationships within the songwriting
communities we have created around the world. The workshop includes an
in-the-round song critique session where writers present one song each -
either on tape, CD or live - and receive professional, constructive feedback
on your song by a music industry professional (Guest speakers from various
arenas of the music industry give their time to give feedback, educate and
provide opportunities and insight). Moderated by Paul Lawrence Moyer.
Details on our workshops www.songsalive.org/workshops.

The workshops are open to all songwriters and music composers of all levels
and music genres and you don't have to be a Songsalive! member to attend
(though preference is given to members and we encourage everyone to join
Songsalive! to maximize your opportunities with us). It is essential to
register your attendance in advance. Our workshops are a great way for local
songwriter members to meet each other, interact and collaborate, as well as
seek feedback and critique on their songs in a very supportive setting.

Our workshops are designed for songwriters and composers (from entry level
to professional) who have written songs, or are in the songwriting stage,
who want to further their craft, gain feedback on their music, and
potentially get their songs out to the world. However, we also have singers,
musicians, and non music types who attend as it's a great networking
opportunity (singers looking for songwriters, or musicians looking for
songs, as examples). The goals of the workshop are about 1) the SONG and
making it the best it can be 2) providing a community for our members to
gather, network, collaborate and learn. Read about Songsalive! and our
mission here http://www.songsalive...

ABOUT CONTACTING OUR GUEST SPEAKERS IN ADVANCE OR AFTER THE WORKSHOP

Our guest speakers give their time for free to come speak to you. They all
lead busy lives and are not all available to receive unsolicited
correspondence or communication. It is recommended to NOT contact the
speaker in advance, nor after the workshop, unless they personally want you
to. That is, come to our workshop, and if during the workshop they take an
interest in creating a relationship with you, then, and only then, should
you further communicate. It is bad practice to assume that since a speaker
has been our guest, and that you met them through Songsalive!, that they are
an open door for you to contact. Please use your best and courteous judgment
in making contact. Thank so much for your understanding.

Hello songwriters-network@....

Beginning November 1, 2009, our politicians in Sacramento have made a decision, without a say or a vote from the citizens of California, to take an additional 10 percent state tax withholdings in order to run the state – that’s equivalent to $20-$90 taken out of the average Californians paycheck every month!

I just signed a petition to say “No To Sacramento!” Join me in this crusade:

  • Step 1: Go to this website: www.NoToSacramento.com
  • Step 2: Sign the petition...
  • Step 3: Tell your friends, family and co-workers!

Let's do it!

The Guide’s extensive event listings and descriptions follow just TWO items:

.

1) NEWS QUICKIE, WITH A BIT OF CAJOLING TO GO AND ENJOY YOURSELF…

+

Bob Stane, renowned show biz impresario, was just honored by the Folk Alliance Region West (FAR West) as recipient of their annual Ambassador Award. He was just featured on the news broadcasts on FOUR L.A. television stations, and with a full page story in the Pasadena Star News and a similar amount of space in the L.A. Times. He was just in the Chicago Tribune.

+

Bob is, of course, the proprietor of the Coffee Gallery Backstage, in Altadena. That’s the venue that wins, every year, in FolkWorks, the recognition as the “Best Intimate Venue for Live Acoustic Music.”

+

But none of it is enough to keep his cozy little venue safe in the current economy, despite the fact that Bob books more “name” acoustic acts than any place else in the L.A. region. So, as he is wont to do, Bob is reverting to his comedic roots. He is circulating an appeal that reads, “Folks, now is the time to work The Coffee Gallery Backstage into your Entertainment Budget. The economy is hitting us all hard and, despite excellent shows we are having trouble filling our paltry 49 seats. I am not being an alarmist but we have to ask for your cooperation. We need to have you attend. Entertainment venues are dropping off the map. My previous business was begging on the street. I have this fine scruffy cat costume and I stand by the freeway with a sandbox in my paws and a sign on it that says, ‘Can't land on all fours.’ It's not dignified for a guy of my age. Don't make me go there again.”

+

Singer-songwriter and fiddle champ Stephanie Bettman replies, “No! We mustn't make Bob go back there again.” Having just come off the road, she adds, “Support your local independent music venues. They are struggling all over the country.” See you at the Coffee Gallery Backstage and some of the other delightful venues that work so hard to provide quality live music for all of us.

+

Supporting your local venue, your local artists, and your favorite touring artists won’t put you in the poor house. Because, ya know what? It’s CHEAPER to go out to an evening of live music than to go to a 90 minute movie in a multiplex shoebox theatre and buy popcorn and a soda. And music venues don’t subject you to 20 minutes of blaring ads and annoying images before the show. (Really and truly, live music is cheaper!)

.

=================

.

.

2) FRED STARNER MEMORIAL SERVICE is Sat, Nov 14, 3-6 pm, and open to his friends and fans and admiring public, at the Studio City Unitarian Church, 12355 Moorpark Av, Studio City 91604. Celebrate the life and music of “BANJO FRED” STARNER, Grand Duke of Hobo Minstrels, retired economics professor, singer-songwriter, past guest (multiple times) on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and well-known peace activist.

+

There will be music, stories, and the L.A. premiere screening of Fred's documentary film, "The Hobo’s Song: That's The Ticket, Roadhog," a fascinating look at today's hobos in America, still riding the rails, carrying on a way of life dating back to the 1930s and holding hobo gatherings and even music festivals. Fred did the film’s music, too. The film’s director, Bill McIntyre, will lead a post-screening discussion of the film.

+

For those who knew and appreciated Fred's gentle wisdom, wit, dedication to peace and his unique performance style - there was nobody who could play a folk song on a twelve string guitar or a banjo quite like Fred - his presence will be sorely missed.  A good man is gone. Come celebrate Fred's life. Note the time change from that indicated previously. Co-Sponsored by Neighbors for Peace & Justice and the Santa Monica Traditional Folk Music Club.
