1) NSAI Los Angeles/Pasadena Schedule

Thursday,  April 12,  7:30-10:30pm -Songwriter Lineup at Hallenbeck's Cahuenga General Store, 5510 N. Cahuenga Blvd., North HollywoodWith guest host Randall Kirby.   $10 admission.  Good food and beverages available.

Sunday, April 22, 6:00-9:00pm at Thurnher House - Group Song Evaluations.  Song evaluations are not only a great way to hone your songwriting skills, they also help to prepare your songs (and you) for the type of scrutiny they are likely to encounter in the real world of the music business. The workshops are also a good hang and a great way to meet potential co-writers. Beginning through advanced writers in all genres are welcome. Bring a song on CD, cassette, or to play live plus 10 copies of your typed lyric sheet.  Lyrics only can also be critiqued.   Free for NSAI members, $15 for non-members after two free trial meetings.
-----------------------
1a) Directions to Thurnher House

Thurnher House is located at the entrance to beautiful Lacy Park in San Marino.   The address is 1485 Virginia Road, two blocks north of Huntington Drive.  The best way to get there is to proceed along Huntington Drive as if you were heading toward Hill-Harbison House, the previous meeting place.  When you get to Virginia Rd, instead of heading South toward Hill-Harbison, go North.  After two blocks, Lacy Park will be on your left. Thurnher House is just beyond the entrance to Lacy Park.  You can park on the street or in the Thurnher House parking lot, the next driveway after the park entrance.

Mike + Ruthy bring new Woody Guthrie song to Kulak's Woodshed. Mike + Ruthy have been touring and recording together for over a decade. A timeless original folk and blues duo from Woodstock, NY, their fan-funded CD "Million to One" rose to the top 20 on the Americana charts in 2010. This spring they are excited to introduce THE NYC EP a collection of six compelling new songs which includes their newly re-crafted Woody Guthrie ballad "My New York City." In celebration of his upcoming 100th birthday, Woody’s daughter Nora asked Mike + Ruthy to finish one of his many un-recorded pieces. The Woodstock, NY couple who met and fell in love in New York City, immediately connected to the beautiful lyrics. “It seems like Woody wrote the words for a loved one, but now as we sing them it feels like a song to Woody himself,” says Ruthy, "It's a huge honor to sing this song."

Hello Ms. Carey

First I want to thank you for your CD, and the note. I am currently in Afghanistan as you can tell from the subjest of the email! I have been here for almost 6 months and thats just about our half way mark. It is my second time here. This time I am assigned to a unit out of Italy, Last tiem it was with the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, NC. I have been in the army for 6 years on the 1st of next month.

I am from Syracuse NY, I am 25 married and when I came out here my wife decided she wanted to be with family (can you blame her) so she moved in with her family also in Syracuse, NY. I just returned from my R&R. It was very nice to see all of the family again.

Things here are going well. I am a cook so I leave the base as little as possible. I am here to keep the morale of the soldiers up. I think all of us cooks do a good job of it. We serve very good food.

Again I want to say thank you for the CD and the note. I speak for everyone out here, it means a lot to us to get letters or anythign at all from people we dont know.

Thank you
Lucas Bouchard

Eileen -

I am currently in Afghanistan and received your CD in a care package from Operation Gratitude, an organization that assembles care packages for deployed soldiers. On the CD case was a nice, handwritten "thank you" note of appreciation and support.

Thanks for keeping American soldiers in mind. It comforts me that whatever popularity or unpopularity there may be in the US regarding the war, Americans are supportive of their soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen. Your thoughts and prayers are not unnoticed and are appreciated.

Take care and keep up with the music. I've attached a picture of our small unit that we took the day that we flew from Ramstein, Germany to Afghanistan.

Julia Farino
Listening to Julia Farino sing compelling jazz standards, you start to understand the woman behind the voice.  A British jazz singer, Julia remains true to the essence of the songs with her unadulterated vocals but reinvents them for the 21st century with her engaging and independent spirit.  Julia follows the tradition of Shirley Horn as a singer of "good songs in good taste".  Julia has been singing internationally for the past 20 years alongside her work as an actress in theatre, television and films.  From rock and pop vocals to jazz, classical and musical theatre, Julia has covered it all, even reaching No.2 in Japan on the Tower Records' Charts on an album of football songs!

 SHOWSTOPPER: Alissa Sanders
Alissa Sanders
Alissa Sanders
Alluring songstress Alissa Sanders ties worlds together with her eclectic, multilingual mix of jazz, samba, and bossa nova, linking two countries with profound, prolific musical traditions: Brazil and the United States. Born in Hollywood, California, Alissa took some of that hometown glamour with her to Brazil, where she lived for 13 years, studying music under mentors such as Neto Costa (vocal coach to Gilberto Gil and Ivete Sangalo), honing her vocal skills and perfecting the fusion of Brazilian rhythms with their American cousins like jazz and roots blues. Through a soft, intimate, enchanting sound that traverses borders, Alissa embodies the magical, musical place where culture, art, tradition, and spirit come together.
Currently splitting her time between SĂŁo Paulo and Los Angeles, Alissa considers Brazil to be her spiritual home, especially the country's musically-rich Northeast. It was also in Brazil where she recorded her first album, Beginning, in 2011, with jazz and Brazilian standards in English and Portuguese. SESC Theatre appearances, presentations at events in SĂŁo Paulo and Santa Catarina compliment her live performances at Barreto, famed piano bar at SĂŁo Paulo's luxurious Fasano Hotel, where she has sung for Coldplay's Chris Martin and socialite Paris Hilton.
With a voice reminiscent of a young Ella Fitzgerald and a cosmopolitan look and style all her own, Alissa has been featured on Brazil's Rede Globo television network-the world's fourth-largest-and has recorded in India with electro-ambient musicians Espiritualistas and in Los Angeles with pianist Ron Bishop. In 2012, she will be touring the tropical-jazz flavored "Beginning" in the United States with her band, an international group of top Brazilian jazz musicians: Michelangelo Pagnano (guitar), Marcos Romera (piano), Sidiel Viera (bass) and Rodrigo DigĂŁo Braz (drums/percussion).

 OPENING ARTIST: Monica Nicole

A singer/songwriter from the National's Capital, Monica-Nicole has been on a musical journey since the age of 5, when she fell in love with the sounds of her church as a member of the youth choir. I know my small contribution is helping to keep the doors open so artists can hone ther craft and have the opportunity to be heard around the world through the live webcast.

The art of woodshedding comes from when songwriters used to lock themselves in their woodsheds to write songs and get so good at the craft with no inturuptions. Today, Artists can hone their craft at Kulak's Woodshed with applause and feedback to help them find ther voice. If you havent signed up already, Please consider becoming a monthly sponsor. Every little bit helps. In honor of the recent St Patricks Day here is an Irish Blessing. "The very best of good luck to ya!"

-----------------------

"Kulak's Woodshed reminds me of those many precious things I wish I would have supported when they were still around."

Museletter for the week of 3/26 - 4/1/12

Hey Ya'll, It's Michelle in Louisiana. I feel very blessed and honored to be a part of something as special and unique as Kulaks Woodshed. It's a joy to give my time and energy to support and encourage such a worthy endeavor. It's all about the music. Songwriters and singers deserve an opportunity to be heard and the simple straight-forward approach often works best. Over the years, policies and procedures have changed and through honest trial and error, i think Paul has tried to hold on to the things that work best.

One of my most favorite assests of Kulak's is the live webcast. I would love to be right there in person but I'm 2000 miles away in Louisiana but thanks to the webcast, I can still see the shows and participate by email. I have tried watching other attempts at webcasting but Kulak's is the best quality and best interaction. I just want ask all of you: If you are not already giving monthly to please consider doing that. Kulak's Woodshed makes my life better and I know the friends and families of the artists who play there love being able to watch even from the ends of the earth. Have a great week everyone!

Also, you can purchase the awesome Kulak's Woodshed T-shirt for just $20 by emailing Paul at paulkulak@...

Monday Night- Singer/Songwriter Open Mic
Come on over at 7pm, sign up for the 1 song lottery and at 7:15 the host will pull the names from a basket one at a time. We usually have about 35 artists signing up so please perform a song that is 4 minutes or less so that all the artists signing up can perform by 10pm when we end the show. For a $20 donation you can request a DVD copy of your performance, which will be available for pick up the next Monday night after 7pm. You are welcome to use our acoustic guitar, baby grand piano and drum kit (with brushes). You can also sing to a track if you bring it in on a CD. Original songs are 95% of what artists do here but covers are fine as well. No amps please. We have all the audio gear and hook ups you'll need with multiple mics and cables.

Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 7:30pm MOSES AVALON
Moses is THE MAN that exposes the scams!
After Lester Chamber’s Facebook post, this is more timely than ever! With
5 platinum albums and years of experience producing music for Warner, and
BMG, Moses was startled to meet so many platinum & Grammy-winning artists
FLAT BROKE, because of bad dealings with record labels. He realized that
signing a major label deal could be the kiss of death if it was signed
without knowing what all that legal stuff means. Starting out to expose
the conspiracies and hidden agendas of the "major label mafia", he soon
discovered that it really wasn't ALL the fault of those in power, but
rather a HUGE lack of understanding from all concerned. From his
experience as a consultant, Moses has plenty of great new stories to
share, tons of fresh information you need to know, all delivered to you in
his unique and entertaining style...always something new, no matter how
often you check out his seminars and workshops! His book, MILLION DOLLAR
MISTAKES Interviews people who've worked with top artists, like Michael
Jackson, Christina Aguilera, The Beatles, Madonna and many, many more.
Valuable information for both new people entering the business and
veterans. Recently updated, "Confessions of a Record Producer" educates,
and illuminates through the use of real contracts and stories. Moses turns
the boring legal mumbo-jumbo into riveting illustrations that you WILL
remember when your turn comes to cut a deal. Moses' seminars are ALWAYS a
lotta fun, and you actually might learn something that'll save your
assets! FREE!
Bring your notepads demos & dreams, we're listening!

 "Eileen -

I am currently in Afghanistan and received your CD in a care package from Operation Gratitude, an organization that assembles care packages for deployed soldiers. On the CD case was a nice, handwritten "thank you" note of appreciation and support.

Thanks for keeping American soldiers in mind. It comforts me that whatever popularity or unpopularity there may be in the US regarding the war, Americans are supportive of their soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen. Your thoughts and prayers are not unnoticed and are appreciated.

Take care and keep up with the music. I've attached a picture of our small unit that we took the day that we flew from Ramstein, Germany to Afghanistan."

Hi Everyone, it's Paul Kulak.

Please have a look at the 1st in a series of Kulak's Woodshed video webisodes that we produced them all by ourselves. They showcase artist performances here, and give a glimpse of our lil' back stage scene. We'll be posting a new one each week for a while. They'll all run about 15 minutes each so when time allows please have a look and share them with others.

Gratefully,

John Zipperer is awesome. I have seen him live several times and each time is even better than the one before. It will be a wonderful night of great music.

Saturday Night will be a DVD Recording Showcase. This is a special night because it gives one a chance to see artists who may not frequent the open mic as much.

Yup!
Get some placement!
Here's an inside tip for out members here:
INDIE MUSIC is what is being asked for.
What is Indie? Try CW network or former WB shows. Yeah, some is acoustic,
some rocks, some are ballads, but they all have a certain "it factor".
If you can find that, you're sure to get something happening!
May 2nd 7:30 PM. Get it recorded, bring it with lyrics. RADIO READY will
get you there. Demos will get some review, but if you're serious, bring a
master quality ready to use immediately recording.

Please click the following link Kulak's Woodshed Webisode #2 to see our 2nd in a series of Kulak's Woodshed video webisodes that we produced all by ourselves. They showcase artist performances here, and give a glimpse of our lil' back stage scene. We'll be posting a new one each week for a while. They'll all run about 15 minutes each so when time allows please have a look and share them with others.

Hey Ya'll, Its Michelle in Louisiana. Be sure to tune in to the two great shows this weekend. Kulak's is a place for musicians and music lovers to find the magic that happens when a song is heard and loved by an audience. It's a communion of he spirit that occurs when the soul is moved by song. It's so remarkable and astounding that it's difficult to describe. But if you have experienced it, you know what I'm talking about. Please consider becoming a Monthly Sponsor. It's very easy and it's very worthwhile.

You can also help by purchasing a Kulak's Woodshed T shirt for $20. If you would like one, just email Paul at paulkulak@...
