Hi Everyone,

Let me celebrate you by putting your name with the other Monthly Sponsors up on the Woodshed 24/7 Webcast page
Thumbnail
2012 was the most difficult year we ever had due to a shortage of performers and audience. As
a result we are several months late on the Woodshed rent. 2013 looks very promising though and
I am optomistic we'll do much better now that we have the Pro Tools Multi-Track Recording Studio.
For now though, if more of you could become $10 a month sponsors it would help so much to getting us caught up on the rent.

Gratefully,
Paul

ORIGINAL JUG BAND MEMBERS JIM KWESKIN & GEOFF MULDAUR COME TOGETHER TO
TREAT FANS IN THOUSAND OAKS

One spring night in 1963, 23-year-old Jim Kweskin was onstage at
Cambridge, Mass.' now-storied Club 47. He was billed as a solo
performer, but as was his wont, he was joined by a gaggle of local
pickers, including the lanky, bespectacled Fritz Richmond on washtub
bass. After the show, Maynard Solomon, the president of Vanguard
Records, sauntered up to Kweskin and offered him a contract for "that
band." Kweskin deferred, saying, "that's not a band, but give me a few
months and I'll put one together for you."

Thus The Jug Band was born.

The Jug Band, featuring blues singer and multi-instrumentalist Geoff
Muldaur by Kweskin's side, was a phenomenon, melding hippie groove
with early American blues, jazz and folk idioms and introducing the
almost lost musical mayhem of Harry Smith's "Anthology of American
Folk Music" to the masses. Considered folk revival heroes, the Jim
Kweskin Jug Band parlayed their good-time music at venues from
Cambridge coffeehouses to the Newport Folk Festival to the psychedelic
ballrooms of San Francisco, where they shared billing with the likes
of Big Brother and the Holding Company and the Doors. Jim led the band
on guitar and vocals, shaping its good-humored mix of old-time folk,
jazz, blues, and 1920s and '30s "whoopie music."

Eventually the band splintered, sending members like Kweskin; Muldaur;
the latter's then-wife and future hit-maker, Maria Muldaur; banjo man
Bill Keith; and harmonica ace turned cult leader Mel Lyman out into
the wider musical world.

In 2008, filmmaker Todd Kwait explored the roots of the jug band style
in the documentary, "Chasin' Gus Ghost." The film, which spanned a
timeline from the '20s to the present, became a tribute to Richmond,
who died in 2005.

Filmed concerts, arranged by Kwait in Richmond's honor, brought
Kweskin and Muldaur back together for the first time in decades, and
the duo is now on the road delighting jug band fans the world 'round.

The concert is presented by Bodie House Music and Regenerate Films as
part of the Open Borders concert series at Four Friends Gallery.

Perfect Women

	 Sometime's I wish I'll had a good women's love,but I know that someday I'll

how mad I make her she still loves me. I just want a perfect women for me. I
know she out there looking for me, but every second I'll waste she geeting

I want to find someone to share my life with someone to buy valintimes for in
feburary . I just want a perfect women for me I know she out there looking for

Sunday, Jan. 27, 6:00-9:00pm at Thurnher House - Group Song Evaluations.  Song evaluations are not only a great way to hone your songwriting skills, they also help to prepare your songs (and you) for the type of scrutiny they are likely to encounter in the real world of the music business. The workshops are also a good hang and a great way to meet potential co-writers. Beginning through advanced writers in all genres are welcome. Bring a song on CD, cassette, or to play live plus 10 copies of your typed lyric sheet.  Lyrics only can also be critiqued.   Free for NSAI members, $15 for non-members after two free trial meetings.

Thursday,  Feb. 14,  7:30-10:30pm -Songwriter Lineup at Hallenbeck's Cahuenga General Store, 5510 N. Cahuenga Blvd., North HollywoodGuest host John Stowers.  Performers TBA.   $10 donation.  Good food and beverages available.

-----------------------

1a) Directions to Thurnher House

Thurnher House is located at the entrance to beautiful Lacy Park in San Marino.   The address is 1485 Virginia Road, two blocks north of Huntington Drive.  The best way to get there is to proceed along Huntington Drive as if you were heading toward Hill-Harbison House, the previous meeting place.  When you get to Virginia Rd, instead of heading South toward Hill-Harbison, go North.  After two blocks, Lacy Park will be on your left. Thurnher House is just beyond the entrance to Lacy Park.  You can park on the street or in the Thurnher House parking lot, the next driveway after the park entrance.

"They're called Big Wide Room.  When accomplished talents collaborate, and when they are individual artists with plenty of awards and recognitions, it's worthy of taking notice.  One had the "Album Of The Decade" in the Los Angeles Times O.C. edition; another runs the acclaimed globe-spanning Listening Room International Songwriters Retreat series; and the third got his start as music director of the New Christy Minstrels, before enjoying individual success.

Together, they've just made an album, Infinite Distance. It's something special." - Larry Wines, Folkworks

Big Wide Room brings into exceptional musical alchemy the diverse talents of Mark Davis, Brett Perkins and David Zink. Each member comes to the trio as a veteran performing songwriter with a strikingly different voice, vision and critically-praised body of work. Playing a "California Sound" strain of folk-rock and Americana pop, together they have crafted songs that rise to themes of spirit, life and passion. Audience raves regularly describe this fusion of talents as "awesome...greater than the sum of the parts..." Performing on guitars and percussion with interwoven harmonies, Big Wide Room has drawn early comparisons to Crosby, Stills & Nash, Counting Crows and The Beatles.  www.reverbnation.com/bigwideroom

1) NSAI Los Angeles/Pasadena Schedule

Sunday, Feb. 24, 6:00-9:00pm at Thurnher House - Group Song Evaluations.

Sunday, Mar 3, 6:00-9:00pm at Thurnher House - Pitch to Publisher.  Details TBA.

Thursday, Mar. 14 ,  7:30-10:30pm -Songwriter Lineup at Hallenbeck's Cahuenga General Store, 5510 N. Cahuenga Blvd., North HollywoodGuest Host Gary Estes.

1b) NSAI Los Angeles/Pasadena Facebook Page

"With the general public in mind, this is not a book specifically for the reader seeking a purely Shakespearean, romantic view through the shades of some polarized rosy lens, but it does offer that. Nor is this a book mainly for the reader in search of a fly’s perspective from the wall of the red light district, however, that may also be represented within. Nor is this a book for those with a misogynistic, plastic view of the female, however, depending on your perspective, this may be on the menu as well.

An extremely versatile contemporary gem."

Every Monday
Singer/Songwriter Open Mic
*New Start Time* 8:00pm
All ages are welcome, so come on over at 7:00pm and
sign up for the 1 song lottery. At 7:30 the host will pull
the names from a basket one at a time. We usually have
about 35 artists signing up so please perform a song
that is 4 minutes or less so that all the artists signing up
have a chance to play. For $20 you can request a DVD
copy of your performance, which will be available for
pick up on the following Monday night after 7pm. You
are welcome to use our acoustic guitar, baby grand
piano (on loan by Bill Stettler, Thank you Bill) and drum
kit (use our brushes please). You can also sing to a track
if you bring it in on a CD. Original songs are 95% of what
artists do here but covers are fine as well. No amps please.
We have all the audio gear, DI's, and hook ups you'll need.

Kulak's Woodshed Museletter for 2/7, 2/8, and 2/9/13

There's still room this Thursday (2/7/13) for artists to perform on the
Kulak's Woodshed Video Recording Showcase and live Webcast.

At the end of the show you will receive a live 6 camera recording with
audio mixed in our new sound recording studio. (Pro Tools tracks also
available) As always, all shows webcast live !! Please send an email to
paulkulak@... for more info, and to book a spot.

If/when 50 of your friends and fans pay $10 each (you can actually set your
own price) to see you perform on the Kulak's Woodshed Video Recording
Showcase for 1/2 hour, you will walk away with $425 (the Woodshed gets
$75) 40 friends for 1/2 hour @ $10 each = $400 - $75 for KW = $325 for
you. 30 = $225. 20 = $125. 10 = $25

Dean first marked his entry into pop consciousness with the Top 20 chart
success of his infectious hit single, Ariel, a quirkily irresistible and

1) NSAI Los Angeles/Pasadena Schedule

Thursday,  Feb. 14,  7:30-10:30pm -Songwriter Lineup at Hallenbeck's Cahuenga General Store, 5510 N. Cahuenga Blvd., North HollywoodGuest host John Stowers.  Featuring The Tall Men Group (Ed Tree, Severin Browne, Jimmy Muffin, Jeff Kossack, Marty Axelrod, and John Stowers).   $10 donation.  Good food and beverages available.

Sunday, Feb. 17, 6:00-9:00pm at Thurnher House - Group Song Evaluations.  In this workshop, we give and receive feedback on each other's songs.

Sunday, Mar 3, 6:00-9:00pm at Thurnher House - Pitch to Publisher.  Back by popular demand, Nashville publisher Steve Bloch will be in town for this special event. Steve one of the best song people in Nashville.   Whether or not he takes your song with him, he will provide great feedback and insight on what makes songs competitive in the Nashville market.  He is currently working with Doug Johnson, head of A&R at Curb Records. He is in need of great country songs (no Pop).

Bring a song on CD and a *TYPED* lyric sheet. Make sure your contact information is on both the CD and the lyric sheet.   Admission is $10 for NSAI members and $25 for non-members. First come, first served.

In addition to the workshop, Steve will be available for private, one-on-one consultations on Monday and Tuesday, 3/4 and 3/5.   If you are interested, you can email Steve directly at  sdbloch@...

Thursday, Mar. 14 ,  7:30-10:30pm -Songwriter Lineup at Hallenbeck's Cahuenga General Store, 5510 N. Cahuenga Blvd., North HollywoodGuest Host Gary Estes.

1) NSAI Los Angeles/Pasadena Schedule

Sunday, Feb. 17, 6:00-9:00pm at Thurnher House - Group Song Evaluations.

Thursday,  March. 14,  7:30-10:30pm -Songwriter Lineup at Hallenbeck's Cahuenga General Store, 5510 N. Cahuenga Blvd., North Hollywood -  With guest host Gary Estes.

Greetings from New York! Stephen GC here, your former Showcase Coordinator. New York is a hoot, but I'm really looking forward to Spring!

A few words about the NEW youbloom.com - literally just launched TODAY!

The emphasis is now on LIVE performances. We have just launched a new web site so please visit youbloom.com and sign up. (If you had a previous membership, please sign up again and upload a few songs to get started). The site is very "social", so you can listen to music, make friends, etc. Because everyone is singing up again from scratch, those who sign up first will get a large amount of visibility.

The youbloomLIVE performances will be scheduled in cities around the world, the first two being in London and Brussels. We will be adding many more. If you have a venue or would like to promote a LIVE performance night or nights, please sign up on the site. If you are an artist, you can apply to play on the site also.

We will be holding a BIG MUSIC CONFERENCE, youbloom@Dublin, this summer, June 28-30 in Dublin, Ireland. This will feature industry speakers, panel discussions and many live performances in Dublin. This will be fun! Check the site for all details. Come to the Emerald Isle!

I'll be back in L.A. for ASCAP, so hope to see many of you there.

All the best,

Stephen GC, alive and well in New York City (it's above freezing today)
