FORMER PANTHER KATHLEEN CLEAVER TO CONVERSE
WITH NEW GENERATION OF ACTIVISTS AT NYU FORUM
ON LIFE AND STRUGGLE BEYOND THE VOTING BOOTH.

Tuesday, April 3, 2 to 4 PM - FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Former Black Panther Kathleen Cleaver, now an author, suburban grandmother
and law professor, will address an audience of young lawyers, students,
activists and community members on the subject of political activism in the
new millennium. The event, organized by the Black Allied Law Students
Association at The New York University School of Law and endorsed by various
law students of color groups and by the N.Y.U. Review of Law & Social
Change, is entitled, "Effective Political Activism in Communities of Color:
Traditional v. Innovative Routes."

The forum will take place on Tuesday, April 3, at the NYU School of Law,
Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. It will be free
of charge and open to the public. For more information, visit the
symposium's web page at
http://www.law.nyu.edu/newsnyu/BALSAsymposium01.html.

Professor Cleaver will converse with a new generation of activists about
life and struggle beyond the voting booth. The new generation speakers will
include Glenn Magpantay, who has tracked voting and census irregularities in
Asian communities at the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund;
Hakeem Jeffries, who ran in the Democratic primary for State Assembly in the
fall; Saru Jayaraman, an organizer of migrant Latino workers; and Sarah
Xochitl Bervera, an up-and-coming community and student activist and
Root-Tilden-Kern fellow.

The new generation deals more in impact litigation and community organizing
than in outright revolutionary slogans. And Ms. Cleaver herself has traded
in her panther beret for law teaching and toned-down human rights activism.
But she has not given up her passionate struggle against society's ills.

"The community is still suffering," she recently told a reporter. "There is
still violence and terrible housing. There's still oppression and bad
health."
