While ripping deep-soul faves from my CDs I stopped to listen again to one of
them, viz. O.V. Wright's Backbeat 604 side "This Hurt Is Real". Of course it's
long been recognised as one of many very fine deep-soul sides recorded by
Wright, a singer widely regarded as one of the sub-genre's 'greats'.

Now I'm not saying this track is my favourite deep side of all time but it is
a great track and, what really struck me above all else, was that it almost
single-handedly personifies the common generalisation about what a 'deep soul'
recording is all about - the funerial pace, the superb lyric underlining just
why Wright is all but out of his mind and actually in pain now that his loved
one has left him and, of course, the emotive, melismatic gospel-honed vocal
which interprets that telling lyric so meaningfully that we could be tempted to
actually believe that Wright might be relating a real-life situation.

I am sure there are many other recordings (probably many even in my own
collection) which do much the same but, if anyone completely ignorant of the
sub-genre ever said to you "What is Deep Soul", I believe you could put on this
particular Wright recording and simply say "It's like that!".

I'm sure other group members might like to come up with their own 'defining'
deep soul favourites.

No link—it’s another of Opal’s side ventures into sharing. I can tell you
there are seventy or eighty cdr’s and these are not gospel—they are blues
and r&b. I helped him with the Fenton Robinson so I know it’s not complete.
He sent me a complete listing where I saw seven or eight I’d like to have
(If I could lay my hands on it, I’d give more of a listing here. If there is
no address on Pewburner.com, I’d send you his email address offlist.

I think the greatest P-Vine Gospel cd is the two-cd He's my Rock--the vast
majority of the Soul Stirrers' pre-Specialty tracks.

When Bettye is traveling, she gets a lot of CDs from people who want
her to listen.
This one I think is very good, and I think the list members will enjoy
it as well.
Soulfull, good songs, melodies, and yet not trying to recreate the
sounds of James Brown or other 60s records.

Eli,

One P-Vine gospel release that springs to mind is "A Change Is Gonna Come :
Modern Gospel Jewelry" featuring 70's tracks from such acts as The Violinaires;
Bill Moss & Celestials; Brooklyn Allstars; Soul Stirrers; Roscoe Robinson;
Clarence Fountain and the Meditation Singers. Jewel recorded a lot of fine
gospel during this period and this collection features some of their better
known artists.

Eli--

I don't think they appeared officially on cd but the 23-volume (24?)
Masterpieces of Deep Soul are among my favorite P-Vine releases. I probably
have only eight or nine of them.

The discussion of the Roy C. got me thinking about what were the best
P-Vine releases that are hard to find now. Anybody have any favorites
be it Blues, Gospel or Soul?

Good question, Eli :

Can' t recall off the top of my head if all I will list below are all on P-Vine
but they certainly are all Japanese releases ( and all are Soul ) :

LPS ( I may do CDS later )...

Eddie Giles - I'm a losing boy
Frankie Gearing - Just Frankie
Ann Sexton : Loving you, loving me
Maurice & Mac : Lean on me
Harold Burrage : Pioneer of Chicago Soul
Laura Lee : Uptight good woman
Syl Johnson : Goodie goodie good times
Various Artists : Soul Pack from Houston - Volumes 1, 2 3
Various Artists : A touch of soul - Volumes 1 and 2
Various Artists : Hi Sounds Rare collection - Volumes 1 - 6
Various Artists : From Detroit comes sweet soul
Various Artists : From Philadelphia comes sweet soul

The Southern Soul ListThanks for the clarification Brian (the Lakewood poster).
So the Roosevelt Matthews isn't the same RM who did a few recordings with Billy
Ball and the Upsetters then.

Thanks again.

Chris, which poster are you referring to? There are a couple, both of which
are new. If you mean the picture used for the show with George Hughley,
Hermon isn't in the picture. That's George and a fella named Roosevelt
     Matthews (who never recorded).

     Nice Record.

If you're into the idea of a mashup of Ronald Isley and Al Green, Willie
Clayton's new album has some really cool songs. The production is very modern,
but it doesn't get in the way. His voice on the album is great.

This group not about the vocals - They're all about the funk and the energy.
Its like gargage punk meets sixties soul.

Just like to add my congrats to David on another fine edition. Also, at the risk
of plugging a 'rival' mag, there's an interesting feature on Charles Walker and
The Dynamites in the latest Blues Revue, a publication that doesn't usually have
much soul coverage.
