“The Meaning of Hope” (produced by Jerry Nelms)

No matter what your political leanings are, you have to wonder about the
attacks on Presidential candidate Barack Obama’s message of hope. After
all, as German theologian and father of the Lutheran Church, Martin Luther,
once said, “Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.” As
19th-Century English writer Thomas Carlyle wrote, “Man is, properly
speaking, based upon hope; he has no other possession but hope; this world
of his is emphatically the place of hope.” That’s why it seems so odd to me
that any of us would question hope.

In his speech in Houston, Texas, Tuesday night, Barack Obama confronted this
reductive view of hope head-on. He said:

There’s something deeper in this argument we’ve been hearing about
inspiration, and it has to do with the meaning of hope . . . . Some are
suggesting that I must be naďve and if you talk about hope, you’re
fuzzy-headed, you’re not realistic, you’re pedaling in false hopes, you need
a reality check. The implication is that if you talk about hope, then you
must be passive and you’re just waiting for good things to happen and you
don’t realize how mean and tough the world can be. But understand—that’s
not what hope is. Hope is not blind optimism. Hope is not ignoring or
being ignorant of the challenges that stand between you and your dreams.

“Hope,” Czech writer and first President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel
once said, “is not the same as joy that things are going well, or
willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for success,
but rather an ability to work for something because it is good.” Havel says
that “Hope is a feeling that life and work have meaning.” If you find
meaning in the world, you will feel the world pulling you in a particular
direction, toward a distant light. Without hope, it’s hard to see that
there’s anything but darkness, and any movement is simply chaotic. As the
late journalist Norman Cousins once said, “The capacity for hope is the most
significant fact of life. It provides human beings with a sense of
destination and the energy to get started.”

Sure, Aristotle called hope “a waking dream,” but there are two key words
there, not just one. Hope is a waking dream, not just a dream. In an
earlier speech last Saturday in Wisconsin, Barack Obama said, “Martin Luther
King didn't stand on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and say, ‘Go home
everybody. The dream is deferred. False hopes.’” Hope is what keeps us
going, keeps us sane, makes life bearable.

As another famous Czech, pioneering psychologist Stanislav Grof, once wrote,
“At a time when unbridled greed, malignant aggression, and existence of
weapons of mass destruction threaten the survival of humanity, we should
seriously consider any avenue that offers some hope.”

I don’t find it strange or inexplicable, then, that many young people would
be drawn to Obama’s message that there is still hope for us, that we can
still believe in peace, believe in goodness, believe in people. For hope is
the force that unites us. “Where there's life, there's hope,” said
2nd-Century Latin playwright Publius Terentius Afer, better known as simply
Terence.

But as Obama has said, hope does not mean being ignorant of the challenges
of this world. On the contrary, “Hope,” 20th-Century Chinese writer and
inventor Lin Yutang has written, “is like a road in the country; there was
never a road, but when people walk on it, the road comes into existence.”
That’s what hope is. Hope does not mean taking the paved, easily traveled
way. “To hope,” psychologist Erich Fromm tells us, “means to be ready at
every moment for that which is not yet born.” As Barack Obama said in a
speech earlier this month, if you hope for change, then you have to be ready
to work for it. “Change,” he said, “will not come if we wait for some other
person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are
the change that we seek.”

And so, this evening, let’s continue such contemplations through a program
of contemplative acoustic and electronic music entitled “The Meaning of
Hope.” We begin with this evocative, inspiring track from keyboardist
Michael Stribling’s Songs of Hope and Healing. We’ll continue, after this,
with a richly woven, world music-influenced composition by the pianist,
vocalist, and composer who goes simply by the name Mary-Kathryn from her
limited edition instrumental collection Dreams & Visions. Later, we’ll hear
Celtic Woman vocalist Lisa Kelly’s rendition of the inspiring song “Lift the
Wings,” composed by Bill Whelan for the original Riverdance production. It’
s from Kelly’s recording simply entitled Lisa. And we’ll end this half-hour
with two simultaneously pensive and hopeful tracks from pianist Stanton
Lanier’s Unveiled. In our second half-hour, we’ll hear a short, haunting
track from composer and producer Zbignew Preisner and vocalist Teresa
Salgueiro’s Silence, Night & Dreams; spine-tingling, lightly exotic music
from the CD TranceWorld by the newage supergroup Earth Trybe, led by David
and Diane Arkenstone; vibrant music from multi-instrumentalist Jamie Craig’s
The Lost Dream; another heartening track from Michael Stribling’s Songs of
Hope and Healing; and finally, a rhythmic composition by another newage
supergroup ,Incandescent Sky, from Paths and Angles.

We’re considering “The Meaning of Hope” on our program tonight, how it
should not be identified as naďve, for it is what gives our lives meaning
and direction, it is what keeps us on the path as we travel Beyond the
Lakes.

We’re contemplating the meaning of hope on our program tonight. We begin
our second hour with simultaneously pensive and hopeful smooth jazz by
pianist/keyboardist Curtis Macdonald from Everlasting. Later, we’ll hear
piano music full of promise by Jim Brickman from the 2006 retrospective Pure
Jim Brickman; another pensive but still moving piece by pianist Stanton
Lanier from Unveiled; another lovely piece from Mary-Kathryn’s limited
edition instrumental Dreams & Visions collection; a soft, encouraging
composition by pianist Iris Litchfield, assisted by cellist John Catchings,
from her compiled collaboration with guitarist Tom Salvatori, When Evening
Falls; and a quietly uplifting piano piece from Louis Landon’s Peace
Revolution! We’ll devote most of our final half-hour to four graceful,
soulful tracks from harpist Lisa Lynne’s Hopes & Dreams. And we’ll end our
program tonight with a remarkably descriptive song of hope and reality
composed and sung by Judy Collins on her 1967 classic Wildflowers.

Profile of Beyond the Lakes:
Music from Beyond the Lakes was first aired on Easter Sunday evening, 1996.
Jerry Nelms began as the show's sole producer and host. Namdar Mogharreban
joined as co-host that summer and began producing his first programs in the
fall. Beyond the Lakes airs eclectic new age and contemplative world music,
both ambient and rhythmic; electronic and acoustic; instrumental and
vocal. Beyond the Lakes is thematically programmed each week. Jerry's
understanding of "new age" music: it provides a space for the imagination,
and, so, can take many different forms but always functions in that way of
allowing the listener space for the play of the imagination.

Hi -

Here's my playlist for Sunday, 3/2/08. Lots of great new CD's today. Here's
some notes on the music I played.

First, a great new album from Brendan Pollard of Rogue Element. Great
sequences, and some wonderful Mellotron sounds.

Rudy Adrian is an electronic musician from New Zealand who has been
around for a while and is equally at home producing both melodic ambient
music and upbeat sequencer music. I played a sampling of both styles.

Building The Cathedral is a new artist, an Englishman living in Finland. His
style is dark ambient, but this is some of the most interesting and engaging
dark ambient I've heard in years. I'm surprised his music hasn't gotten more
attention. This is fantastic stuff. Very highly recommended.

Another Englishman, David Wright, has a new album out, inspired by his
performance in Philadelphia last year. Very nice melodic electronic music,
and one of his best albums. Dreamaiden is really Susan Baird, who also
plays melodic electronic music. She performs regularly in Second Life,
where many musicians have been performing of late. And a nice new album
from Psicodreamics, full of symphonic and cinematic electronic music.

From a recent blog....................

Coming up this week on UT 699 is the Australian radio premiere (yes,
another one!) of the newly-released extended 3-CD soundtrack to Ridley
Scott <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ridley_Scott> 's Blade Runner
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_runner> , by the lord of the
symphonic ambient cosmos - Vangelis Papathanassiou
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vangelis>

and as if that wasn't enough to get you quivering with delight, Nev will
also be serving up a selection of pieces from the Vangelis soundtrack to
the new historic epic about the life of another famous child of the
Hellenes <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeks> - Domenicos
Theotokopoulos <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Greco> - known to
history as El Greco. The film promises enough heaving bosoms, evil
inquisitors, passionate artistic histrionics and fabulous Baroque
dancing to satisfy just about anyone with a pulse!

The show is also celebrating Vangelis 65th birthday this month. Vangelis
was and has been one of the major musical influences behind the creation
of the ambient program Ultima Thule all those years ago in
1989.....enjoy, savour and delight in the sweet sounds of a living

#12314 From: TRANCEPT <TRANCEPT@...>
Date: Sat Mar 8, 2008 7:37 pm
Subject: TRANCE PORT ANNOUNCEMENT: Release of A Produce Album "The Clearing"
TRANCEPT@...
Send Email Send Email

Trance Port is proud to release the final A Produce re-issue of his first album
(1988), "The Clearing."

"The Clearing" was originally released in 1988 in an edition of 500 LP’s. At
the time, AP considered it “an album of conceptual space.” It was also
very much a transitional album, AP having gone from playing guitar in the
“dark dance band” Afterimage in the early 80’s to where he was headed
musically and creatively in the 90’s on up to the present.
The notion of the Trance Port label also evolved in the early 80’s, first as a
cassette releasing label of what was evolving as the “L.A. underground”
music scene. Many of the artists AP met during that time appeared on the two
"L.A. Mantra" compilations issued on Trance Port during those years.
Many also appeared on the tracks of "The Clearing" project. AP is thankful for
those artists’ varied contributions on this album. It would not have turned
out as well and as interesting a project without them.
After release of "The Clearing" LP, A Produce began to drift into more
space/ambient realms. Some of "The Clearing’s" original tracks have appeared
on later compilations of my work. This is the first time the entire album has
been rejoined as the whole it originally came from. An added “lost” track
has been included on this CD release to complete the experience. For this
release, all track tracks have been remastered by Loren Nerell and AP.

Hi -

Here's my playlist for Sunday, 3/9/08. Some notes on the music I played:

Another great album from William Basinski, El Camino Real, which came
out last year. This is a long form piece combining a simple melody with lots
of processing, similar to his Disintegration Loops series. This is one of my
favorites, though. The weather here has been blustery this weekend, and
this music is a great match. Melodic, yet ominous. I played another recent
album of his as well, Shortwavemusic. This is different from El Camino Real,
as it's comprised of shorter pieces that are more static ambient
compositions. But it's as interesting as the long form pieces, too.

Some albums from new artists, who are much different in their styles.
Steve Brand is a new artist, performing tribal ambient music with lots of
didgeridoo on his album, Twilightmind. He doesn't overdo it, though. And a
new album from Mico Nonet, which is a chamber group backed by
electronics. The strings and electronics blend seamlessly, breathing new life
into the classic chamber sound. I like this a lot. And a new album from an
artist I haven't heard from in years, Bil Vermette. He plays symphonic
electronic music well, and I'm glad to hear some new music from him.

I also played the music of Ron Boots today. Ron has been in the electronic
music scene for over 20 years, as a recording artist and as a founder of the
electronic music label Groove Unlimited (www.groove.nl). He started by
releasing his own cassettes, and still produces his own music, as well as
producing many others. His music ranges from ambient to upbeat
sequencer based music. I played selections from his early days, as well as
more recent works. I highly recommend his works for fans of electronic
music.

Stalker is one of my all time favorite albums. It was inspired by the Andrei
Tarkovsky film of the same name. The album is a masterpiece of dark
ambient music, full of foreboding. And it was a listener request as well.

A new album that's quickly becoming a favorite of mine is a new
compilation on the Hypnos label, Sounds Of A Universe Overheard. Hypnos
has been doing some great things lately, and this is no exception. There's
established ambient artists alongside of unknown ambient musicians as
well. It's a wonderful blend of different types of ambient music from spacy to
dark ambient.

Hi -

My name is Scott Raymond, and for those of you who don't know me,
I'm a New Age/Ambient/Electronic music DJ with WVKR-FM. WVKR is
a 3700 watt non - commercial station broadcasting from Vassar College
to the greater Hudson Valley region. My show, "Secret Music", has been
on for over 20 years and has a large and devoted audience. The show
airs every Sunday from 9AM to 12 noon EST. For more information or to
listen in online, check out our website at www.wvkr.org. I'm always on
the lookout for new and interesting music to play on my show. If you
have something you think I'd be interested in, feel free to send it to the
address below or email me for more info. If you're a local musician or
just passing through the beautiful Hudson Valley region and you'd like to
stop by for a live interview, drop me a line and we'll work something out.

I'll be happy to see spring soon. This winter has been a rollercoaster for
me health-wise, with a bout of pneumonia thrown in for good measure.
I'm better now (I hope), and eagerly awaiting warmer weather. But
there's been great music, and some upcoming live shows to look
forward to in May from Stars of The Lid, and a solo piano concert
featuring Louis Landon and David Nevue. I'll be scheduling some live
interviews and performances too, now that things are better. Any
musicians that would like to stop by on a Sunday morning please drop
me a line.

I'm also now accepting new albums for airplay via download, as well as
via traditional CD. Downloads are growing in popularity, and I'm
adjusting to meet the times. Here's my top 20 playlist for February.
Enjoy!

March 9, 2008
“Delicate Air” (produced by Jerry Nelms)

The earth is about to change its identity. We can feel it in the air. It
happens every year of course, the abrupt fits and starts of seasonal change.

The move from Spring to Summer and then, from Fall to Winter are slow,
gradual developments as the earth heats and cools. But from Summer to Fall
and then, Winter to Spring, the change is sudden, disjointed, spasmodic—one
day cold and icy, the next day warm and sunny.

These seasonal mood swings are felt all over. Here in the Midwest, it
snowed on Friday; this week our air temperature may get back into the 60s.
On the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the kites will soon be flying again
over the dunes. The sand will still feel cool on bare feet, but by the end
of the week, the temperature on Topsail Island may reach 70. Soon, sometime
this month, March, the monarch butterflies will leave their winter homes in
central Mexico. They live off of their reserves of fat all winter. Soon,
they will mate and then begin their trek back northward to look for food.

But the air they travel in is a delicate ambivalence, a stammering, fitful
transition. 19th-Century English novelist Charles Dickens once described a
March day as one where “the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it
is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” And all our hopes are set
on science and precedence. “No winter lasts forever,” nature writer Hal
Borland assures us; “no spring skips its turn.” Our skeleton woods sway in
the white March winds. And the hoodwinked daffodils, which sprouted in the
day or two of warmth we experienced, must brace themselves for another cold
winter night. If they survive until the end of the week, they might just
make it to see the butterflies return in April.

This evening, then, let’s contemplate on the coming of Spring, even as we
experience the fits and starts of this seasonal change. I’ll provide the
soundtrack with a program of music entitled “Delicate Air.” We begin with
these warm, mellow, shoreline atmospherics by sound artist
Soulfood from his retrospective collection SpaScapes Massage. Later, we’ll
hear a winsome solo piano piece by Steven C. Anderson, who goes simply by
Steven C, from his collection Signature; and then, a bittersweet setting to
music by Michael Smith of a portion of the diary of eccentric
turn-of-the-20th-Century writer Opal Whiteley: “Larks of the Meadow,”
performed by Anne Hills, assisted by cellist Eugene Friesen. It’s from
Hills’ collection Beauty Attends: The Heartsongs of Opal Whiteley. In our
second half-hour, we’ll hear a charming, nostalgic little tribute to winter
by the duo of Rob Miller and Ron Huestis, who call themselves A New Day,
from Autumn Musings; also two lovely, delicate tracks from
pianist/keyboardist Ken Townsend’s Gentle Beauty; and finally, two
simultaneously transcendent and earthy piano and electronic compositions
from multi-instrumentalist Ryan Farish’s collection From the Sky.

We’re contemplating the ambivalent fits and starts of seasonal change from
Winter to Spring on our program tonight, the warm and cold spasms of March
and the “Delicate Air” of this transition, wondering, I guess, if the
seasons continue to change Beyond the Lakes.

We’re contemplating the ambivalent fits and starts of seasonal change from
Winter to Spring, the warm and cold spasms of March and the “Delicate Air”
of this transition, tonight on Music from Beyond the Lakes. Ken Townsend
returns to begin our second hour with this very pretty composition from
Gentle Beauty. We’ll continue with three hauntingly beautiful tracks from
harpist Lisa Lynne & flutist George Tortorelli’s Love & Peace and then the
charming premiere track to keyboardist Richard Bone’s Saiyuji. “Saiyuji,”
by the way, is the name of a Buddhist temple in Singapore. We’ll devote
most of our final half-hour to more disarming music from Richard Bone’s
Saiyuji, and we’ll end with a good-natured track from Richard Bone’s most
recent collection, Finite Plastic Creation.

Hi -

Here's my playlist for Sunday, 3/16/08. Some notes on the music I played.

Adrian Beasley is a talented electronic music and member of the band Air
Sculpture. This is his first solo album, combining the retro sounds of Air
Sculpture with more modern ideas. Well done.

One of the classics of ambient music is Brian Eno's Music For Airports.
Once upon a time, the chamber group Bang On A Can performed an all
acoustic version of the album which captured the tone of the original. This is
a live concert recording of the work from 1998.

Ian Boddy is an English electronic musician who has been making music
since the early 1990's. His styles range from retro sequencer type sounds to
more ambient music to newer, electronica based works. He's still going
strong today, and his label, DiN, is well respected in electronic music today.
For this set, however, I focused on his older, lesser-known works released
on his Something Else label from the 90's.

Some great new acoustic music this month too, including two new albums
from local musicians. Louis Landon is a jazz pianist who also does more
new agey solo piano sounds. But he brings a jazz player's virtuosity to his
music, and makes it stand above the crowd. The Gypsy Nomads features
local guitar talent Scott Helland, now as part of a duo with singer Samantha
Stephenson. It's more of a folk/medieval duo sound, with a twist: the lyrics
are in French. Highly recommended. Rudy Perrone is a talented guitarist
who turned to Will Ackerman for help with his new record. The difference is
noticeable, as Rudy's playing really shines here. But the acoustic surprise of
the month comes from newcomer Kelli Rudick. Her guitar playing is not
unlike that of her friend, Kaki King. I hope we hear lots more from her.

Cities remain, in spite of their occasional ugliness, one of the most
beautiful kinds of amalgmations of human effort. They are also a great
place to find, of course-- people.

I have lived in cities for most of my life. This particular longform
work, "City Of Drones", is comprised of seven pieces. One piece
permeates the entire work; it is a re-working of "Mutescape", an actual
field recording of an urban scene run through various filters and
effects. The other six pieces are full of impressions of cities. They
are largely drone in genre and use for the most part acoustic sources.

I hope this piece is fun to listen to and makes you think of all that
is horrible and great about our urban centers.
